WORCESTER, Mass. - Supporters of Republican Scott Brown lined the sides of a street here outside a Democratic rally at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where former President Bill Clinton came to campaign for Martha Coakley.

More than 75 boosters of the GOP candidate turned out for the counter-rally, standing the sub-freezing weather to wave Brown signs and loudly sing (to the tune of “Battle Hymn of the Republic”), “Glory, Hallelujah … Send Scott Brown to D.C.!”

Among the Brown supporters were - believe it or not - rank-and-file members of the Service Employees International Union.

“We’re Americans - we have our free choice,” said one of the SEIU members, who identified herself only as Michelle and said she drove more than 60 miles from Western Massachusetts - “The stepchild of this state” - to show her support for Brown in Worcester.

Not only is Michelle a Brown supporter, but she’s also a Tea Party activist who rode 10 hours on a bus to attend last year’s 9/12 March on D.C. “I didn’t like the slide into socialism,” she explained.

Michelle is aware of the importance of Tuesday’s election.

“I feel like we’re here … not just voting for us,” she said. “We are casting our vote for the rest of America.”

You may be surprised to know that not all unionized people support the actions of the union they are forced to join. While many are "sheeple", some of us have our own mind, and use it. At my place of employement, I am forced to belong to AFSCME and pay union dues even though I don't want to be a part of that union. Sounds like communism does it not? I disagree, no, detest every political move AFSCME makes. Yet, I am forced to be a member and they continue to take my money against my will. I am a conservative and I sent money to Brown's campaign, and I live in PA. Please do not assume, when you hear "union members", that all agree with the union to which they belong.

David| 1.16.10 @ 11:33AM

Unfortunately we often speak in generalities but we're speaking of those who are the face of the their membership. I understand your dilemna, and thank God there are many folks like you, Charlene, who stand tall individually and act according to own conviction.

SoCon| 1.16.10 @ 12:21PM

We know, Charlene; It's the Union leadership that has all of the power.

I live in a blue state and take a lot of flack for it. I feel terrible about some of the morons elected here, but I can't leave because of my elderly mother's illness.

You're not alone.

Joan| 1.16.10 @ 9:18PM

Charlene,
I have often thought our langauge should distinguish between UNION BOSSES and the members they old prisoner. I really would like to ask those union members who do fall in line: When was the last time your Union Boss asked you what your views are on healthcare, immigration, Cap and Trade? They take your money in the name of representing you, then they tell you how to vote. Who is representing who? They make promises they know they cannot keep. Yes, THEY LIE! Union members have the worst deal of all. They are taxed by 2 different sources ... the government and the union bosses ... and both without representation. What exactly is the different between a union boss and a politician? They are in it for themselves, not the working man. They extort protection money from workers and use it to line their pockets with political favors. What is worse, these Union Bosses are using the unions to destroy the Middle Class ... they very class that the unions once helped make strong. A call to all Union Members: Save the Middle Class which you once fought so hard for! You gave us fair wage and hour laws. You gave us child labor laws. But you have been invaded and the enemy is with your ranks. Throw the Union Boss Bums OUT!

denise| 1.17.10 @ 7:54PM

I ditto, Dave. It should be against the law to be forced to do anything against our will. I do believe that it is a violation of at least a few of your rights. I think that we have a few left. :>)Sorry for your dilemma.
Ex-Union worker from PA.

Trandon Bellweather| 1.16.10 @ 8:15AM

I'm actually not surprised to see this. I'm a member of a large union in the chemical industry, and there are many of us at our plant who vote conservative or have found a home in the Tea Party movement. It's a myth that all unions are evil agents against the Republic. Many of the leaders may be, but many of the members are committed to our country long before our employee union.

Liam| 1.16.10 @ 8:45AM

I am a lifelong liberal tree-hugging registered Democrat and SEIU member from western MA. On Tuesday I intend to vote for Scott Brown although I know next to nothing about him or his positions and I know Martha Coakley to be a smart, thoroughly competent, and decent person who would be a good senator. Such is the depth of my complete disgust and disillusionment with Obama and the Democratic Party. And yes, SEIU operatives are indeed thuggish. They extort dues from our paychecks whether we "choose" to join the union or not.

We have suffered a long decline in American passion and commitment to justice and freedom for all. Democrats and Republicans both, who have neglected their office for personal gain and did not represent the will of the people, did not lead in that long downward spiral, but craftily walked behind as a shepard would his flock, as they sent us to our shearing. May this Tuesday represent for the people a turn of direction and where we cry out 'You will lead, but in doing so, you'll lead from the front where we can see you.' It is a Government for the People, hence you will lead responsibly and we will stand our watch.

As a resident of Alabama I can only hope that Scott Brown wins this election. The American people are fed up with these Democrats that have destroyed this country. Do you guys realize that Barney Frank is a joke down here? The great state of Mass. can show the rest of America that it's tired of the Chris Dodd's, Maxine Waters, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi lining the pockets of their millionaire friends through corrupt legislation and agendas. Send the tax and spend liberals a clear message, this is OUR country and we won't stand by while they destroy it. We're counting on you Mass. to do the right thing and elect Scott Brown for Senate! Thanks and God Bless.

AJsDaddie| 1.16.10 @ 2:04PM

A very important point made by Trandon, among others: union members are by definition not union leaders, and it seems that there may be as much of a disconnect between union leadership and their rank-and-file as there is between Congress and the people they are supposed to represent.

That's why I think the Tea Party movement may be as appealing to the disenfranchised union member as it is to the disenfranchised voters and taxpayers.

So be careful when you use the word "Union" negatively; not all things union are bad, and not all things done badly by the unions are done by the union members. So if you're not a union member, don't broad brush those who are, instead talk to them about the future of America. I think you'll find that many of them care as much about that future as you do.

And if you are a union member, I think it's time that you send as loud a message to your leadership as we are sending to Congress. And the first part of that message can come on Tuesday.

Go Brown!

AJsDaddie| 1.16.10 @ 2:15PM

@Liam; "On Tuesday I intend to vote for Scott Brown although I know next to nothing about him or his positions and I know Martha Coakley to be a smart, thoroughly competent, and decent person who would be a good senator. "

No, Liam, that's the point. If Martha Coakley were a smart, thoroughly competent and decent person, she wouldn't be in danger of losing this election. Instead, she has been show to be everything that the real America hates: power-grubbing, dishonest, elitist, and entitled.

This election, the upcoming elections in 2010, the 2012 presidential election, and all the state, county and municipal elections in between are now part of a larger referendum on values. For the first time in a long time the people are speaking and it will be very interesting to see what they say.

This administration and this Congress have together awoken a very disgruntled populace, and the results may be astonishing. I have started telling AJ that he is living in a time that will be read about in future history books. I only hope it's compared to the American Revolution, and not the Cultural Revolution, but that is up to us.

Smitty| 1.16.10 @ 3:21PM

Martha's anything but 'decent'. I was shocked when I did some research on her. Whew!

She's not the sharpest tool in the shed, either.

My husband is a union member, he's always angry every time AFL-CIO endorse any candidate of the Democrat Party. He doesn't like the idea his monthly due is use by top echelon of the union and donate it to DNC. One time he was forced to join a strike, our three children was still small, I just had just given birth to our youngest child (2 months old). The union hall did nothing for us for 6 months, he was offered so many jobs but cannot take it because it was and still is against union policy; they'd call you a scab. For that 6 months our life was miserable, we had to apply for food stamp, go to churches and ask for help to pay our electric bill. He's retired now, he discourage our children to stay away from any union. He told them, "if you join a union, never expect to improve your life, you'll stay at the bottom of the pile until you can't work anymore, but union bosses will be rich."

Why can't these union members TAKE BACK their bosses companies? You all have to join together an go up against the Union leaders.

An attempted take-over happened to my husband grandfather who owned property and was building homes on 100 acres and then selling. Grandpa Rogers hired all non-union workers, pay a good wage in cash every Friday. He purchased insurance to cover the workers while they were on his property.
The Union guys showed up one day and told us to "stop working" that this is a union State(Ohio).
They tried to convince us that it was against the law to be non-union and working on the property.

They skedaddled quick when my husband's grandfather showed up and pulled out the shot-gun and demanded they leave his " private" property. Guess they over-looked the No-trespassing signs and Grandpa Rogers son, Deputy Gilbert Rogers arrived to show them the property line. They never returned.
There are about 50, 2500sq/ft homes, within the community, he built, before his death in 1989, at the age of 80 years old. He always said, If you don't give the bastards control, they can't take it.
Go Scott Brown......
