I take all these points, Jeff. But here's the difference between Haley Barbour and Michael Steele: if Barbour's book came out in 1996, that was two years after the 1994 elections. If Steele had anything like that kind of success under his belt, I think he'd be getting less grief for his extracurricular activities.

Plus, Haley Barbour already had gravitas - over and above the 1994 elections - that anchored his character.

Steele is a palpable putz.
