Whole Foods Market has long dominated the natural and organic
food scene, and most liberals who shop there believe they're
putting their money where their mouth is. But the grocery's
CEO, John Mackey, has used the bully pulpit the store's success
has provided to oppose first labor organizing, then health care
reform, and now to deny human-caused climate change.
Mackey's Wall Street Journal
op-ed eschewing health care reform made waves this summer,
spurring
protests and a Facebook
group calling for a boycott. But now Mackey has gone a step
further,
telling the New Yorker that he thinks the science
on climate change is still unsettled.
Mackey, a libertarian, echoes a familiar conservative talking
point when says he worries that climate "hysteria" will lead
the government "to raise taxes and increase regulation, and in
turn lower our standard of living and lead to an increase in
poverty." But he goes even further, hypothesizing that warm
temperatures cause prosperity -- instead of, you know,
the opposite.
How can someone who sells organic food have an independent mind
and believe differently than the liberal conventional
wisdom? The horror! It's time for a boycott!

A little bit behind the curve, are we?
Bean sprouts and tofu are good for the Right side of your brain,
don't you know?
Not to mention couscous and free range chicken.
We have two within ten minutes or so, one small one and one super
store.
The hoity-toitys and ex-hippeyes I can take or leave, but the
store is fantastic.
I bet Toddard Liberal Reader both go there.
The strange thing to me is the immense sense of betrayal that
many on the left seemed to feel when they realized that Mackey
doesn't walk in lock-step with their political opinions. It was
as if they had thought of Whole Foods as "theirs"--a refuge from
those neocons and paleocons who would surely never imagine
shopping at the store.
It was a ridiculous assumption on their part, but the stench of
victimization that comes from them whenever he editorializes is
pretty fun stuff.
Personally, I shop there and enjoy the selection of stuff that
they carry that you don't find on most stores. But I never
shopped there because I thought of myself as furthering some
cause with my purchases---I'm just picking up the groceries.

Isn't this the store started by the Aldi people?
Why are we surprised that a capitalist is willing to speak the
truth about a planned leftist movement designed to destroy

I hope every REM-listening, Late-Model-Volvo and/or Prius-driving
hipster chick with ugly clothes and granny glasses are all
choking on their organic trail mix while tending their
rat-infested public gardens in Dupont Circle with organic coffee
grounds from Starbucks, home of the $4.99 soy latte. She and her

them)
can calm themselves drinking organic wine from a country they
can't pronounce in their tiny studio apartment overlooking the
dumpsters while listening to NPR and lighting some beeswax

The Aldi's didn't start Whole Foods. There are two Aldi brothers

the other owns Trader Joe's Markets.
Both of them make Walmart's business practices look like a
