The Spectacle Blog

Okay, now that I have ensured that I will receive lots of hateful comments…. Sarah Palin’s decision not to attend CPAC (the Conservative Political Action Conference) is ridiculously petty. I will grant that CPAC should not have let the Birchers be minor sponsors. I don’t understand that decision. But this bit about David Keene and Fed Ex/UPS (read the link for explanations of these references to specific issues) was dealt with months ago, and Keene certainly explained it to my satisfaction and to the satisfaction of most conservative bloggers as well. In fact, the issue is SO “over and done with” that it cannot be anything more than mere pretext. Somehow I don’t think Sarah Palin has a long record of letting her schedule be determined by the wishes of a delivery company. (And I say this as somebody who has editorialized quite strongly in favor of the FedEx position in that dispute, which I gather is the position that Palin in effect takes, which means that my beef clearly isn’t with her position on that dispute itself.) As for Keene supposedly complaining last year when she pulled out of a scheduled CPAC event: Hell, I would complain too if a rising gubernatorial star committed to come to the single biggest conservative event of the year and then backed out (IF that is what happened). If that is what happened — and again, I do NOT know the circumstances, so there MAY be a legitimate explanation — then unless Palin had a really good reason, she did effectively “diss” not just Keene but the conservative movement, in which case Keene would have been right to complain.

What I do know is this: I saw Keene at the GOP convention in 2008, early on, and he was positively gushing about Palin, absolutely thoroughly excited about her selection as Veep nominee and totally supportive. I don’t blame him, therefore, for being disappointed at her absence in 2009.

What this really looks like is that Palin seems to assume she has conservative activists in her hip pocket anyway and thus can refuse to speak to its most enthusiastic activists in order to take a shot at Keene. Well, IF that is true — and I acknowledge this is all based on assumptions that the reports in the links are accurate — then Sarah Palin is playing right into her reputation of being somewhat of a diva. It’s hard to be a diva and a woman of the people at the same time. To paraphrase Fagin from Oliver Twist: I think she better think it out again.

Mr. Hillyer:
No hate mail from me, but is not our problem the proliferation of hyphenated Conservatives? We have neo-cons, paleo-cons, movement cons, fiscal cons, social cons, libertarians, birchers(actually didn't know they were still around) and now add Tea Party.

With the Conservative movement so fractured, and still a minority within its chosen instrument, the GOP, how can we ever reagain our influence? Can Palin play a role? Who else might we look for to give voice to common ground?

945call| 1.8.10 @ 3:37PM

Check the recent polls, 40% of Americans now call themselves Conservative, versus Liberal or Moderate, while only 35% call themselves Rebulblicans, versus Democrats or Non-Affiliated. If Conservatives are the minority in the GOP, it's not by much and if they are, the GOP would love to attract the very large remainder who are most likely Independent. A few might be Democrats but that group would be very small.

PALIN FOR PRESIDENT 2012| 1.8.10 @ 6:31PM

Go Sarah! Hope we can survive the next three years of the Obamination now in office.

carol Collins| 1.8.10 @ 7:06PM

believe Sara Palin has common sense to know what she needs to do to represent the Republican Party. She has made it clear that rebuilding the republican party from within is the goal. She represents republicans as a whole, not a section with its own agendas.

Jon Lester| 1.8.10 @ 10:55AM

I find her reasoning far from petty. The fact that the John Birch Society has anything to do with an event she attended would certainly be used against her in any future campaign. That association would have a negative impact with the average swing voter.

945call| 1.8.10 @ 3:31PM

I agree. It would be like someone attending a Tea Party with an Obama/Hitler sign.

Tennessean1942| 1.9.10 @ 6:38AM

945call: "I agree. It would be like someone attending a Tea Party with an Obama/Hitler sign. "

Sad, but true. The Obama/Hitler sign probably spells political doom for anyone associated with the Teabagger movement.

Have you seen these signs?

akw| 1.14.10 @ 1:44PM

The Obama Hitler signs are being carried by
La rouche people - Democrats. Check his website - they sell them there. They show up at all Tea Parties and Town Halls, and everyone thinks they're GOP, but they're not, by a LONG SHOT.

Smitty| 1.16.10 @ 6:01PM

It's Nazi Pelousy who accused the Tea Partiers of being Nazis. She would know.

Kyle| 1.8.10 @ 3:50PM

Speaking at CPAC would hurt her but quitting as gov wouldn't? Face it, she wants $100,000 to speak at the Tea Party conference. Meanwhile, CPAC pays nothing. So guess what her motivation is.

Mike Bruno| 1.8.10 @ 4:01PM

Even Andy Barr said she will get between 37 and 50 thousand and debunked this 1oo k rumor. Liberals just won't give it up.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 4:43PM

You don't get it, do you? The point is, she should be speaking FOR FREE.

These are teabaggers, not moneybag-elites -- aren't they? Don't teabaggers have a problem with people demanding that much money for a speech, especially when it's paid ultimately by them, "the little people", the teabagger "base"?

O'Sarah has a PAC she can get funds from, to get to the teabagger convention, and to cover her expenses -- she has had her attorney formulate several different avenues to do this.

So, whether it's $37K, $50K, or $100K -- O'Sarah doesn't need to pick teabaggers' pockets to give a speech to them.

Mike Packer| 1.8.10 @ 5:15PM

OOOOOOH, just learn a new word? Teabagger? Maybe next week learn to use it twice in each sentence. Get over your fascination with that specific act... Unless of course it is something YOU enjoy so much..

James| 1.8.10 @ 5:20PM

KarenJ is a liberal nutjob from mudflats blog.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 6:24PM

No, I'm not. I'm a registered Independent. I don't march in lockstep with 'Bots, like the ones I've seen on C4P and TeamSarah, and I abhor everything Sarah Palin stands for -- if anyone can pin down just WHAT it is she stands for. She changes her mind every week, it seems.

And hey, YOU guys invented the term "teabagger". We on the "other side" are still laughing because you all didn't realize the urban dictionary meaning of the word. That's why we keep using it, to make fun of the goofs who decided to use that name for their movement.

slayer| 1.8.10 @ 6:40PM

Palin stands for God, Guns, American Oil, Strong Defense, No Illegal Immigration, Less Government, Less Taxes, Less Abortion.
Palin does not need the Conservative movement, the Conservative movement needs her.
You stupid Liberals (and you ARE stupid for voting in this disaster) need to forget about Palin and focus on President B+ and his out of control spending, atrocious foreign policy, double digit unemployment, 12 trillion dollar deficit, record bank failures, record business failures, disasterous TARP bill, and a golf record in his first nine months that beat Bush's over three years.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 7:11PM

LESS abortion? I thought she was "pro life"! As in "no abortion". None. Not even for rape or incest.

Well, President Obama is one up on our previous president; Bush didn't get through his first year without a disaster -- Obama has averted several, including a whole bunch Bush handed him (including 95% of the deficit you mention). I expected it'd cost a lot of money to fix these problems. Did you think it was going to be FREE?

But Bush beat Obama in one thing -- he was on vacation in August 2001 when he was warned Osama Bin Laden was planning an attack on US soil (voila! it happened the next month. Perhaps BECAUSE Bush did nothing when he was told that information?)

Obama waited until December of his first year in office before HE took a vacation.

Nobama| 1.9.10 @ 3:01AM

Wrong, Madcow KarenJ--Obama took at least a week off 6 months ago during the summer. Martha's Vineyard, as I recall. Teddy Kennedy died about that time.

Not so smart Madcow KarenJ the liar.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 7:13PM

Oh, one other thing -- you can always tell when a neocon right-winger is finally at a loss for words -- they descend into personal insults, like calling others "stupid". Why don't you just let the adults talk?

Brian72| 1.8.10 @ 7:16PM

If the shoe fits......

Mondo | 1.8.10 @ 5:23PM

KarenJ,

Teabaggers?

Hey baby, that's hot! Let's you and me take the first Cleveland Steamer out of here! When we get to Cincinnati, you can get me a bowtie. Actually, I'll just watch. Stay cool. Y' hear?

Nobama| 1.8.10 @ 5:56PM

I don't know, Mondo--if you're gonna hook up with Karen you'd better protect yourself and make sure she gets an STD workup done on her first. Never know where those liberals girls have been.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 6:26PM

You can always tell when a neocon right-winger is finally at a loss for words -- they descend into personal insults, salacious innuendo, and four letter words NSFW.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 6:46PM

You descended into personal insults first, Karen. Not only are you a liar, you're a hypocrite as well.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 7:19PM

Contrary to YOUR opinion, Janice, Sarah Palin, or O'Sarah, as we now like to call her, is fair game for insults.

Teabagger is not an insult; teabaggers started calling themselves that. Too bad they didn't realize what it really meant.

'Bots? OK, I guess that's insulting. No one likes to be likened to a robot. But if the 'Bots wouldn't parrot those talking points they get from Redstate or Townhall or Freep over and over and OVER again, without a scintilla of thought seeming to drift through....

Gosh, my bad. Mea culpa, I didn't realize all of you neocons HERE thought of yourselves as teabaggers and 'Bots.

Brian72| 1.8.10 @ 7:24PM

On and on it goes. The moronic double standards and poor me victimization. Listen up fool. Anderson Cooper 180 started the little perverted Teabagger tag as a sick joke on the air of CNN, then it went viral among the rest of the jerks on the other cable shows. Andy had to apologize for it later, but the goal was accomplished. The activists themselves have always identified themselves with the Boston Tea Party from American history, if you will recall.
Not that you would care, it doesn't fit your liar agenda.

Tennessean1942| 1.8.10 @ 9:52PM

KarenJ sez: "Teabagger is not an insult; teabaggers started calling themselves that."

Liar. Prove it.

KarenJ| 1.9.10 @ 6:03PM

Technically, they were saying and printing up signs saying "Teabag Obama before he teabags you".

Mediate.com reports this: In a press release touting “unfriend” as the word of the year, the New Oxford American Dictionary may have unwittingly made a more controversial move than the New Oxford American Dictionary pretty much ever does.

No, it wasn’t another cutesy tech neologism: they included “teabagger” as one of their Word of the Year finalists.

According to the release, they define “teabagger” as “a person who protests President Obama’s tax policies and stimulus package, often through local demonstrations known as ‘Tea Party’ protests (in allusion to the Boston Tea Party of 1773).”

Their definition doesn’t touch upon any of the raunchier, more testicular connotations of the word, which Keith Olbermann and Anderson Cooper had a lot of fun with in April. Cooper can take a lot of credit for the popularization of the phrase: in response to David Gergen’s questions about the Republican Party’s abilities to organize and articulate a message, Cooper infamously quipped, “It’s hard to talk when you’re teabagging.”‘

Lest anyone too quickly accuse the New Oxford American Dictionary crowd of insidious liberal bias, it’s worth pointing out that “Obamanation,” “Obamamessiah,” “Obamacles,” and “Obamalypse” were highlighted as notable words./i>

Us progressives/independents and liberals got a laugh out of "teabaggers", and some of you neocons got a laugh out of all your Obama alliterations, and some of the horrible things some of you say and photoshop about Michelle Obama and the two children.

I find YOUR lies and nastiness far more corrosive than anything I've said here.

Patriot| 1.9.10 @ 9:25PM

Yes, Madcow KarenJ--it's Booosh's fault. We knew you'd get around to it.

Admit, it; you got called out for STARTING the name calling and smut talking on this blog.

Instead of apologizing for your vile remarks and nasty disposition you try to deny the obvious and then proceed with the typical liberal whining and moaning that define you leftist fools. Poor widdle KarenJ.

We accept your apology anyway.

Looks like you liberals can dish it out, but can't take it.

Brian72| 1.8.10 @ 7:20PM

Isn't this hilarious? No one can call this woman any opinion expressing names or labels, while she goes on and on calling Sarah Palin every single derogatory name she can think of, and insulting her family, and anyone who would support anything she has said, or believes in the Tea Party movement(it is not Teabaggers idiot, that came from Anderson Cooper 180).
Such compassion and understanding from a kind hearted soul. Ha!

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 7:26PM

Karen is a liar and a hypocrite with a foul mouth.

The more she spews her hatred for Sarah, the more we support Sarah. Not so smart, Karen.

KarenJ| 1.9.10 @ 6:07PM

None of us progressive/independents are trying to change YOUR mind about Sarah Palin. What we have to say isn't for YOUR consumption anyway. It's for the first-time visitor here who hasn't been swayed either one way or the other about Sarah Palin -- and I'd bet that those people find YOUR methods of communication far more acidic and off-putting than the fact-checked information Laura, Jack and others including me have posted here in support of Quin Hillyer's blog entry.

Patriot| 1.9.10 @ 9:31PM

YOUR FIRST POST STARTED the smutty name-calling, KarenJ; every blogger can see that. You deserved whatever was thrown back in your face. Grow up!

Don't try to weasel out of it.

SoCon| 1.8.10 @ 4:35PM

Baloney. This isn't a money issue; Sarah's just made millions from her book.

Your comment says more about you than Palin.

0whole1 | 1.8.10 @ 4:56PM

She made millions from her book, and in February she will make tens of thousands from her 'bagger chat, and no doubt there'll be other rubes lining up to have their pockets picked by her in the future.

The "millions for her book" was a green light, not a red. Free market, and all that, right? Putting the breaks on squeezing folks kinda smacks of....what's the word I'm looking for here....

Oh yeah. Socialism.

Mondo | 1.8.10 @ 5:25PM

owhole1,

"capitalism" is asking whether they want to pay to hear Palin speak.

"Socialism" is when the government takes your money and gives it to someone else so they can listen--but they're gonna take your money either way.

Amanda| 1.8.10 @ 6:21PM

Socialism is when the government takes your money and pays Lewis Farakhan thousands of dollars to speak at your child's college. My daughter is 40 years old now....this indoctrination has been going on for a long time.
Capitalism is Sarah Palin speaking at wherever
she wants at whatever price she wants. The liberals have no problem with Al Gore making
billions off the global warming scam.

slayer| 1.8.10 @ 6:42PM

And the Liberals have no problem with both ghostwritten books from President B+ either.

Somewhere in Kenya, a village has lost its idiot.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 6:33PM

Socialism is what the State of Alaska and Sarah Palin when she was Governor practiced freely. They taxed the oil companies who did the "heavy lifting" researching, drilling, and moving Alaska oil, then distributed the proceeds of those taxes to every Alaska resident every year, ever since the Alaska oil fields opened up.

Now, if Alaska law directed that the money from those oil company taxes went into a general fund, and was used for state infrastructure, social programs, development, etc., then Alaska might not have to get twice as much money back from the Federal Government (the rest of us US taxpayers) as the state pays to the Feds.

In other words, Alaska is both a welfare state and a socialist state. It's like a little pig, suckling for the past 50 years and the damned thing won't grow up so we can make it into hams and bacon. Maybe Alaska secession wouldn't be such a bad thing -- for the rest of us.

Brian72| 1.8.10 @ 6:38PM

What a glittering jewel of colossal ignorance that comment is. Good grief.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 6:49PM

Karen's a hater, what can I say? No matter, all the liberal lies in the world can't stop Palin.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 7:22PM

No, you're a hater. You hate what you term as liberals (they're only 17% of the electorate, a nearly insignificant voting block).

It seems more like you hate anyone who disagrees with you.

Brian72| 1.8.10 @ 7:26PM

Stop it, we are not fools. You are a liberal. You use all the approved buzzwords, have all the right attitudes, and despise all the right people.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 7:30PM

Yes, Karen the smut mouth is a hater who can't hold a candle to Sarah Palin. Envy is an ugly trait, Karen--you're pathetic.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 7:25PM

My first paragraph is true; my second paragraph is true; my third paragraph is my opinion.

And PLEASE don't parrot something Sarah Palin said. Nearly everything she has ever said has been debunked.

Brian72| 1.8.10 @ 7:29PM

Nearly everything Sarah Palin has said has been debunked, but you are a shining beacon of honest opinion and integrity? Laughable. You are a venomous viper of obsessive hatred, and you quite frankly are making me sick.

PatM| 1.9.10 @ 1:14AM

Uh, actually, Karen is quite correct. Maybe you could research the subject.

Nobama| 1.9.10 @ 2:54AM

Truth| 1.8.10 @ 8:18PM

Karen, What is ACES? Where do you think the extra money from these oil companies now go?

How was Sarah able to put 4 billion dollars away for a rainy day? Who owes the resources in Alaska? Where does Alaska get their money to run the state government? What is the CBC? Who dismantle the CBC?

Truth| 1.8.10 @ 8:21PM

Karen, The people here are not stupid. The money from the oil companies does fund roads, schools, health,...and on and on. So stop acting so stupid.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 7:26PM

Do you want to see me write my litany about what right wing neocons say when they are at a loss for words? It has something to do with playground insults.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 7:33PM

wayne| 1.8.10 @ 4:46PM

I am not a screaming Sarah fan. There are some odd things that go on around her and I am not entirely comfortable with certain things she has said - Alaska is a weird and very libertarian place so a lot can be attributed to that alone.

That being said, I wish that someone influential would come out with a more fair assessment of why she left as Governor. Everyone just accepts that it was cowardice, arrogance, or both.

The fact is Alaska law like its people is extremely libertarian. It gives huge precedence to the little person taking on the powerful. Every lawsuit and charge by a citizen leveled against a public official has to be dealt with seriously and examined officially at length.

I actually give Sarah Palin credit for resigning when she realized that she was utterly incapable of continuing to perform as governor due to spending almost every waking minute closeted with lawyers giving depositions and fielding legal charges by other hostile members of the state government.

That she took her duties to the people who elected her seriously and resigned when she could no longer perform them was an admirable act. Too bad people like Teddy "the alcoholic Killer" Kennedy, the Clinton's, Chris "Special Favors" Dodd, and Charlie "Property Taxes?" Rengel, and Jack "Kickback" Murtha don't ahve aa similar sense of duty.

A number of groups funded by Democratic/Progressive groups with very deep pockets were using Alaska's laws to not only ruin her character and political future but to create a public impression helped by Ted Stevens issues that the entire Republican establishment in Alaska was totally corrupt and needed to be replaced with Democrats.

In resigning she allowed a non-controversial Republican to take over and removed herself to a place where Alaska law would no longer be used to stop the process of Alaska government and allow her to continue to be involved in politics (instead of uselessly living with lawyers 24/7).

ronw| 1.8.10 @ 4:57PM

Amen. Recall too that she had to pay all her legal bills herself -- personally. That was before the money started rolling in from the book. Being elected Governor should n0t include the obligation to go broke.

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 5:09PM

Sorry, but I don't vote for quitters. Why did Palin allow herself to get in such a governing morass; why couldn't she handle the job? It's not rocket science. If she was innocent of all the violations, she could have fought and won. I want a strong leader, not a quitter.

Charlie| 1.8.10 @ 10:41PM

Jack she did fight and win every one of the allegations but she still had to pay her lawyer fees. and some slimy, liberals just kept making unfounded charges against her. She was winning them all but it was taking up all her time and resources. In Alaska the state doesn't pay elected officials lawyer fees. That you call her a quitter shows you know nothing about why she did what she did.

Jack| 1.9.10 @ 2:29AM

Wrong. She did not "win" the Troopergate allegation; the Branchflower Report found that she was guilty of Abuse of Power. Watch 60 Minutes on Sunday night to hear Steve Schmidt say the same thing.

I have been considering Palin among other candidates, but I am shocked to learn that even as a merely casual political observer, I am more in command of the facts about Palin's record than her "Team."

Nobama| 1.9.10 @ 2:45AM

Liar Romneybot--she never bankrupted her state like Myth Romney did. Nice record, RINO.

annieOK| 1.9.10 @ 9:08AM

Jack, have you ever had to fight a lawsuit that was directed at you, and you were totally innocent? Someone in my family had to do that a couple of years ago; they are still in a deep financial hole. Through absolutely NO fault of their own, they had to spend all the savings they had accumulated over a lifetime and borrow some more to clear their name and protect themselves. They were exonerated, as they should have been, but the financial, emotional, and TIME costs were horrible. Going through that just the one time was life-altering, and I can't imagine what it would be like to face that continuously, when as soon as one is finished, up pops another one.

She did the morally and fiscally correct thing by removing herself as a target, for both her family and her state.

J. Fred Smug| 1.8.10 @ 5:31PM

oh, BOO EFFING HOO. You do realize that the most expensive ethics claim was the one which Sarah Palin filed AGAINST HERSELF, don't you?

http://www.pensitoreview.com/2.....t-herself/

http://emptywheel.firedoglake......al-record/

Why do FACTS always seem to take a vacation whenever Palin's adoring fan base blindly sing her praises? PATHETIC.

serena1313| 1.9.10 @ 4:39AM

You should talk to the people ... who actually live in Alaska. Certainly you are welcome to your opinions, but not the facts.

The fact is Sarah did not quit because she couldn't perform her duties as governor due to the law suits. Sarah quit for some other reason, what it is no one seems to know for sure.

There is an argument to made: Alaska has a law that says officials cannot accept monetary proceeds from any outside source while in office. Quitting was the only way she could collect the $5 million for her book not to mention the 6-figure speaking fees. With greener pastures ahead, much more money to be had, places to go and thousands of adoring fans to see, Sarah took-off running.

Insofar as her legal bills ... they've been paid ... by her loyal followers who generously gave up their hard-earned money. And Sarah continues to ask for contributions to SarahPAC.

One of the ethics violations Sarah filed herself. Not all have been dismissed some are still pending.

Talk to the folks in Alaska, you might learn something. You may not like it, but facts are facts. You can either deny or accept them, but you cannot change them.

liberal| 1.9.10 @ 8:50AM

i think i know why she quit, or at least the single biggest reason: $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Patriot| 1.9.10 @ 9:39PM

Of course, a materialistic, cynical liberal would think it's all about money because that's all you corrupt democrats care about. Money and power.

At least Sarah earns her own money instead of stealing it from us like you leftist losers.

Brian72| 1.9.10 @ 10:54AM

serena1313, your facts are wrong. You might be the one who needs to learn something about this.

There is a legal defense trust set up for Sarah Palin's legal bills by a close friend of hers in Alaska, it's called the Alaska Fund Trust. This was where the donations for legal fees went.
Guess what? The fund itself was attacked with ethics complaints on the premise that the Governor could be influenced to corruption by thousands of people all over America who sent contributions of $20-$50, with an upper limit of $150. So, the fund trust was legally frozen by the very same few ankle biting complaint filers that made it neccessary to begin with, proving that this effort was never about good government, but personally bankrupting the family of a politician these people disagree with and are threatened by.
There have been no transfers of money out of that fund to this day.

You don't know what the heck you are talking about.

Why are you wasting ammunition of shooting at Palin over an internal GOP issue ?

Wouldn't it be better for conservatives if you wrote about ways the GOP and conservatives can stop Obamacare ?

Or do you think Palin attending CPAC is a strategy for that ?

I take it you have gotten over yourself and are attending CPAC like all of the other wise and smart conservatives.

She's reaching out to an entirely different, dissociative, disconnected, disinformed mob that's eager to follow a leader willing to take advantage of their amorphous anger. Yikes - Palin certainly ignites passions.

I will only say this - I'm rooting for her. I like her very much. I think she's bright, but not an intellectual - which is great, because I think intellectuals are solely responsible for destroying this country.

But: I need to see more from her. A lot of folks have coalesced around her, but I haven't seen the kind of leadership that Reagan exhibited from the 1960s on.

I'm NOT saying it's not there. I'm just saying I need to see more from her. this might have been a great platform for her.

Palin made the right decision. The Birchers are radioactive for someone like Palin.

My own view is that any conservative who speaks at CPAC ought to be as tainted with the Birchers as Kevin Jennings is tainted by NAMBLA (given his statements about Harry Hay).

Any potential presidential candidate who speaks at CPAC will never hear the end of the questions of "Why did you appear at a conference sponsored by a group that considers the Birchers mainstream?"

The ones that show up and speak at the conference are asking for it. Palin is smart. Remember what happened with her husband's affiliation with the loopy Alaskan Independence Party (or whatever they are called)? Palin knows better.

Red Phillips| 1.8.10 @ 2:17PM

Oh Dr. Beckwith you disappoint me. The Alaska Independence Party is "loopy?" The AIP, while not technically affiliated with the Constitution Party, has represented the state of Alaska at the Constitution Party National Convention the last two cycles (2004, 2008) (maybe longer?) and endorsed/gave ballot access for the Constitution Party nominee. Palin's husband's affiliation with the AIP and her willingness to address them and the Alaska Libertarian Party was one of the reasons (along with her past support of Buchanan and the nice things she had said about Ron Paul) some of us paleos had some hope for Palin before she sold out to the McCain campaign.

The AIP may be more conservative than you wish to go or think practical, but to call them "loopy" is a simple slur that is beneath a man of your stature and learning.

Wings met sun, crashed and burned. It is Palin's choice to do what she wants. She is a private citizen now, under no obligation to anyone or any group. If you dont approve of her choices, then by all means if she runs for office dont vote for her. But as of now there has been absolutely no announcement that she will run for any office or that she owes any obligation or loyalty to any group.
Go Palin.

Atheists for Palin!

greg| 1.8.10 @ 11:42AM

Contrary to the impression you give everyone, David Keene has said some pretty bad things about Palin since the election. For that reason alone, I don't have any problem with her ditching his group altogether. Last year he used her to attract a bigger crowd, even though she never committed to come, because CPAC always occurs during the Alaska legislative session. BTW, that is why she didn't attent CPAC in 2008, as well, when she was pretty much unknown. Besides, CPAC has essentially become an East Coast affair closely aligned with Romney, with quite a few Paul supporters showing up as well. It's not exactly a representative conservative group.

Margie| 1.8.10 @ 12:00PM

Paul supports despise her. at least from what I've seen and heard. They're rabid.. I'd stay far, far away too.

Glen| 1.8.10 @ 5:31PM

I've been a strong Paul supporter for 20 years. When he announced his candidacy in 2007 I was thrilled. I didn't think he would win, but I wanted him to get his views out in TV debates. And that has proven worth it because he has more influence in DC than he did before. People now listen to him.

Well, during the primary campaign two things happened. The media controlling who got time in the debates shunned him, and when they did ask him a question it was generally a stupid one, totally away from his message.

But the other thing that happened was his campaign took off. Great excitement, money bombs, a blimp, huge cheering crowds. He was the first rock star (of three) of the 2008 election. But because the media, even and especially FOX, continued to shun him, he couldn't translate the Ron Paul R3volution into votes.

So I began to look for a candidate for the future who could pick up that excitement for limited government, individual liberty, and free markets, who would be young and energetic, and most of all would be so incredibly charismatic that the media could not resist heavy coverage.

Well, August 29 brought to light guess who. She was everything I had wished for and then a whole lot more that I had not evened imagined.

Dr. Paul had two major elements to his campaign - libertarianism and foreign non-intervention. I suspect it is those who gravitated to the Doc because of non-intervention that would not support Palin. But I think she fits the libertarian agenda better than any "electable" candidate we have ever seen.

So as I agree that she should avoid CPAC, I don't agree that she should avoid Ron Paul supporters.

Margie| 1.8.10 @ 8:14PM

Great post.. excellent points. Glad you have that kind of awareness and I have to agree with you!

Siegfried X| 1.8.10 @ 11:47AM

Palin quit her politician's job to become a full time celebrity. I don't understand why some people expect her to be some sort of political savior when she doesn't want to be one. None of her decisions have made any sense for someone who wanted to run for office again, especially the presidency. Palin clearly is out of politics.

I also don't understand why people assume she is a solid Republican and conservative when she has spoken many times of supporting candidates in parties other than Republican (and she certainly didn't mean third party conservative).

For some reason conservatives have invented this imaginary Sarah Palin who is their dream candidate, but is nothing like the real Palin.

Some people fall in love with a life story and make incorrect assumptions. It's as pathetic as Republicans who say, in spite of the facts, that John McCain MUST be a conservative because he was a POW.

bluecollarbytes| 1.8.10 @ 1:07PM

There is no "dream candidate" out there. Sarah Palin is but 1 imperfect human. BUT, at least she is unafraid of American history and its unique place in a crapped-up dangerous world. She feels no need to assign 'good intentions' to an opposition whose rise to power is always first run right through demonization of conservative philosophy and individuals.

At least Palin Opposes, making her more of a 'man' than most of the pretty pedicured males currently jockeying for position.

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 1:17PM

Sadly for us, it's not that Palin is unafraid of American history. Palin doesn't KNOW any American history. I want a conservative candidate who knows the history of our great country.

Obama - quit Illinois senate to become Senator. Quit senator to become quasi-president, fail

Many senators quit to become governors or vice-versa.

Of course she will campaign for anyone who is conservative and many of all parties are conservative. Apparently you ARE NOT.

It is also apparent that you have not read or listened to any of her facebook posts, WSJ op-eds, speeches or anything else. So, you really have nothing to say about Sarah Palin nor a single fact.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 6:48PM

It's been proven over and over that the nitwits who totalled up the $2M counted quite a few costs several times over. The REAL cost to Alaska was under $300,000.

YOU didn't back up your claim with any links, but I will:

And just so you know: When President Obama was ELECTED President, he resigned his Senate seat. Can't be both at once. It's not "quasi-president", it's "President-Elect".

That's so elementary, I'm surprised you have to be told that.

P.S. Sarah Palin doesn't write her Facebook posts or her WSJ op-eds. They are written by Rebecca Mansour, or Tim Lindell. Sarah Palin writes like she talks, and those screeds don't "sound" anything like her.

Francis Beckwith | 1.8.10 @ 11:56AM

What's wrong with the JBS?:

Bill Buckley: http://tinyurl.com/n48v6v
Bob Dylan: http://tinyurl.com/yzmxgj6

Red Phillips | 1.8.10 @ 2:23PM

Oh Dr. Beckwith, you're killing me. I never imagined you as the enforcer of mainstream (which is yesterday's far left) orthodoxy type.

While I don't have much use for the John Birch Society’s conspiratorial orientation, they have long been rock solid on the issues. They are consistently constitutionalist, unlike most of the advocacy groups that make up Conservative Inc. which are politically pragmatic, certainly not strict constitutionalists, and overly deferential to the GOP in their perspective. I will take conspiracy theorist true constitutionalists over non-conspiracy theorist "mainstream" conservatives any day of the week.

Has the JBS sponsored CPAC in the past? Is this a new development? If so, Keene deserves praise for allowing this once pariah group (after one of Buckley’ famous “purges”) back in the good graces of the “movement.” And if this is really one of Palin’s justifications (it doesn’t ring true to me), then she needs to seriously reconsider. The JBS has more support on the activist “far” right than she might realize.

Francis Beckwith | 1.9.10 @ 11:22AM

The purpose of politics is to advance the common good and do so by winning elections. JBS does neither.

Imagine if Obama had said this about the Weather Underground: "While I don't have much use for the Weather Underground's violence, they have long been rock solid on the issues. " Would you find that acceptable?

"You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows."

Red Phillips | 1.9.10 @ 2:44PM

Thanks for the reply.

"Imagine if Obama had said this about the Weather Underground: "While I don't have much use for the Weather Underground's violence, they have long been rock solid on the issues. " Would you find that acceptable?"

Of course not, because the Weather Underground is wrong on the issue and advocated violence. But the JBS is right on the issues with a few small quibbles and doesn't advocate violence. What part of the JBS political agenda do you disagree with exactly?

"The purpose of politics is to advance the common good and do so by winning elections. JBS does neither."

The JBS seeks to get the Fed Gov to actually follow the Constitution, a quaint idea I know, and I consider that an attempt to advance the common good.

ernie1241 | 1.31.10 @ 12:16PM

Red: When the JBS was given the opportunity to demonstrate how it intended to "follow the Constitution" and in the process reveal "its agenda" during the 1960's -- it chose to ally itself with racists and segregationists and to oppose and vilify every national civil rights leader and organization.

The following quote comes from a source which even Birchers respect – i.e. a very prominent African-American author and JBS speaker, George S. Schuyler:

"The White Citizens Council which has branches or cells everywhere, controls by terror such states as Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and to a lesser extent, Virginia...It has defied and disrupted the operation of the laws of the land. It has used threats and vicious economic reprisals...It has become a legal arm of Mississippi's Government.” [4/22/61 Schuyler column in Pittsburgh PA Courier]

Furthermore, let’s also consider a comment made by JBS member (and FBI informant within the White Knights of the KKK of Mississippi), Rev. Delmar Dennis:

"The Klan in Mississippi has completely infiltrated every phase of the legal, political, social and economic system in Mississippi. The membership in the Klan ranges from common laborers and criminals, to judges, lawyers, doctors and political leaders. While they may not be active members, they are secret members who use their influence to further Klan efforts and aid Klan activities, for example, it is generally known in Klan circles that supervisors who pick juries use their influence to get Klan members on the jury panel."

Unfortunately, the Birch Society interpreted the problem in our southern states as entirely an abstraction instead of understanding the real-world consequences to living human beings.
The JBS totally ignored, de-valued, trivialized, or facilitated the daily injustices and crimes often committed (or condoned) by the very people in southern communities whom had the responsibility for translating abstract principles into reality. These were the folks who made “state’s rights” and the words “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” into a cruel joke.

The reason why the JBS is so often "linked" (unfairly) to the KKK is because:
(1) they both supported and praised the same racist politicians---such as Gov. George Wallace (AL) and Gov. Ross Barnett (MS) and Senator James Eastland (MS) and
(2) they both opposed all civil rights legislation and pro-integration efforts and
(3) they both described the civil rights movement as "Communist-created" and "Communist controlled" and "serving only Communist purposes" while simultaneously denouncing all civil rights leaders and organizations and
(4) they both had senior officials who were racists and segregationists.

In addition, even Rev. Delmar Dennis told his FBI contact that the KKK viewed the JBS as a fertile recruiting ground. In fact, at least one JBS chapter in Mississippi had to be disbanded because it refused to terminate the membership of a known KKK member.

In an 11/7/64 report to his FBI contact, Dennis stated that:
"I have learned that the Klan uses meetings of the John Birch Society, Masons, and Americans For The Preservation of the White Race to solicit members for the Klan. The Auxiliary Police in Neshoba County is a front for Klan membership in Neshoba County."

Dennis himself was a JBS member, a segregationist, a KKK member, and a member of Americans for the Preservation of the White Race even before he became an FBI informant. He also founded a whites-only church in his community.
As the FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Jackson MS field office wrote in a summary memo about Dennis:
"Informant is widely known in rural Mississippi as an ardent segregationist…He founded the First Southern Methodist Church in Mississippi, which church was founded for the sole intent of maintaining racial segregation."

The Birch Society welcomed racists and segregationists into its ranks as members, as chapter and section leaders, as writers and speakers, and including as National Council members -- such as A.G. Heinsohn Jr., T. Coleman Andrews, and Tom Anderson.

Major officers of the White Citizens Councils movement were also Birchers, such as: Medford Evans, William J. Simmons, and Louis W. Hollis.

The Birch Society employed racists and segregationists as speakers under the auspices of its American Opinion Speakers Bureau – such as Sheriff Jim Clark of Selma AL and Rev. Ferrell Griswold of AL.

The Birch Society approved of and promoted incumbent politicians and candidates for political office who were unapologetic Klan-supported white supremacists – such as Sen. James O. Eastland of MS and Gov. George Wallace of AL and Ross Barnett of MS. Often, the JBS sponsored or reprinted their speeches or otherwise endorsed their rants which characterized the civil rights movement as a Communist enterprise -- which was certainly music to the ears of the most rabid bigots in control of southern communities.

Kent Courtney, a prominent JBS leader in Louisiana, was the featured speaker at a 6/5/65 “Conservative Rally” in Natchez MS sponsored by Americans For The Preservation of the White Race, Inc.

William J. Story, a JBS member who was a candidate for Governor of Virginia refused to join the other major party candidates in condemning the KKK.

James H. Sutherland was a JBS chapter and section leader in Missouri who founded the St. Louis chapter of White Citizens Councils. He was also active in Southern States Industrial Council and helped craft their annual Declaration of Policy which opposed school integration.

Another prominent Bircher, Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker, wrote in 1965:
“I’ll bet you will find more good Americans in the Ku Klux Klan than in the Americans For Democratic Action.”

The JBS and its membership took these positions or made these statements while claiming that they merely were "following the Constitution" -- so we now know what type of society and what depredations of freedom and dignity the JBS is prepared to accept as reasonable and "Consitutional" if left to its own devices.

The beautiful thing about Palin, IMHO, is that she is a conservative and better yet, a conservative for the people she used to represent in Alaska. She took it to both parties to get her way and her way turned out right.
I'm much more depressed on the silence of the GOP in total at the moment, mainly because it gives me that crappy feeling that they learned nothing from the trouncing they recieved and are poised to take over the ruins left by the socialists just,,,,,,because.

Mae| 1.8.10 @ 2:39PM

"is that she is a conservative and better yet, a conservative for the people she used to represent in Alaska".... ah, she did? ah, that was when they had fist fights over her at the Republican Party of Alaska Annual gathering. Palin liked the fist fights. That is the conservative party element she represented.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 3:18PM

Fistfights not in a good way, either. Palin, trying to show how little like her predecessor Murkowski she was, pushed through a lot of pet projects that had the approval of Democrats in the Alaska state legislature in her first year of office -- when she bothered to show up for work, that is, about 4 hours a day -- and doing that, earned the enmity of the Alaska Republicans.

In 2008 she hardly showed up at all in Juneau except for the State of the Union speech and photo ops, which prompted the "Where's Sarah?" lapel buttons everyone in the legislature wore.

Now only her most diehard ignorant redneck Alaskan supporters are left to be "represented" by whatever it is that she's doing now "to progress the people of Alaska".

KarenJ| 1.10.10 @ 7:02PM

Operative word in your comment: "had".

Those approval ratings were polled just before she was nominated to the Republican VP candidate post, not long after she had authorized an additional $1,200.00 "resource rebate" be taken from the Alaska Permanent Fund after residents had already gotten their PFDividend. This was done despite revenues from oil production already decreasing (thus, less available to put into the Permanent Fund as investment).

Who WOULDN'T be popular after doing something like that, even if the economy meant that the next year's PFD (paid out in 2009 several months after Palin quit) would be far, far less?

William Henley, Wasilla| 1.8.10 @ 4:58PM

facts, where are your links? Idiot! At least make a statement and back it with some kind of article from a newspaper or something.

alwaysfiredup| 1.8.10 @ 3:28PM

Taking criticism from conservatives for not going to CPAC will actually strengthen her with independents. It's the same storyline she used to get elected in Alaska: If the people think your side is dirty, you have to start a big public fight and make a show of cleaning house. Then the public will believe the dirt has been dealt with. Right now, she's making CPAC into the dirt, and I wonder if it will survive Hurricane Sarah. (It doesn't matter to me either way.)

Mae, I'm tired of hearing AK Republicans bi*ching about Palin. She didn't play your game, boo frickin hoo. The AK GOP was as crooked as it gets. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

In fact, I hereby announce that you can be my God and any time you come to some conclusion on a topic you can just send me a mental note of what I now believe in. Who needs personal responsibility, who needs to keep a critical eye on things when we have you and your infinite wisdom and ability to answer all our tough questions.

Sarah Palin is all about $$$. That said: The CPAC does NOT pay its speakers - neither a fee, nor a first class airline ticket for 3(or is it 4?) people, and also not for a $700/night hotel room.

So, THERE you have the real reason $arah Pal$n will not show up.

Truth| 1.8.10 @ 6:33PM

Sarah Palin is speaking at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in April in New Orleans for no fee.

Sarah Palin speaks at Righ to Life groups for no fees.

Sarah spoke at College of the Ozarks for no fee.

Sarah Palin's jacket was auction off for $57,000 for Charity.

Dinner with Sarah was auction off for $63,000 for charity.

$10,000 for Ft. Hood.

How much does Mitt, Huck, and Newt get for paid speeches. I never hear anything about that.

Huck was paid to give a speech at a fundrasing event for a candidate and event ended in the red.

I don't remember a bomb going off for that.

Sarah Palin is still paying off her $500,000 debt for doing nothing wrong. Such yesterday another law suit against Sarah Palin was dismissed from a Federal court. No merit. How much did that cost her for doing nothing wrong. There are still reminding law suits and complaints that have been filed against her for doing nothing wrong. How much are they going to cost her?

Sarah Palin has a contract with a Washington firm that sets up most of her speeches. Anybody that hires her agrees to the contract.

But the problem is everybodyelso is allowed to get paid for speeches and set their terms but Sarah Palin.

Listen to you nutty people.

I can hear the lefties jaws dropping

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 7:50PM

I'll have to make a note of those no-fee speeches for when my fellow "libtards" say she doesn't speak without getting paid.

Although I think she would have had a hard time collecting a fee from that Right to Life speech in Indiana last year -- she was still Governor, there are Alaska laws against getting personal fees for service while in office, and she left for the speech right in the middle of some rather important state legislative business that really required her presence.

Nobama| 1.8.10 @ 8:32PM

More lies from the Palin stalker, KarenJ.

Derek Leaberry| 1.8.10 @ 12:50PM

Keene's a man for sale, a master lobbyist, a conservative symbol about what's corrupt about the American ruling class. He's been for sale at least since he supported George Bush over Ronald Reagan in 1980 even after being told by Bush that conservatives need not apply for jobs in a Bush Administration. Keene is also the sort of guy who won't let Pat Buchanan through the front door at CPAC but is more than willing to grovel before anti-conservative John McCain in 2008. Conservatives should turn their backs on CPAC and DC operatives, almost all are in it for the money. Think Abramoff.

Tennessean1942| 1.8.10 @ 12:51PM

PMain| 1.8.10 @ 12:52PM

Sarah Palin followed the "established" methodology in the last Presidential Campaign, much like the last 2 Republican lead Congresses... how'd that work out?

The political landscape has changed & is still changing & the Republican establishment, including CPAC, is still following the time-used methods… which is fine, but their successes have depended greatly upon Democratic miscues or Reagan's charisma & are not time-proven by themselves.

The special elections in NY & now Mass have shown that the GOP elites are too slow to act & that the real political change is coming from the outside of the Party. You'll have to forgive Palin for reading the political leaves & actually responding to base's desires vs. ruffling the establishment’s feathers or following the prescribed path.

Reagan built a base by traveling the country, paid by GE no less, giving speeches & drawing support over time. It’s called building a base, not making decisions for the base or assuming support thereof, which the GOP, CPAC, etc. have built careers upon.

Margie| 1.8.10 @ 1:29PM

AKR| 1.8.10 @ 3:30PM

she is BY FAR the best candidate

1.starpower
2.Charisma
3Crowds
4.values
5.Speechs
6. she can raise huge money
7. she does really well in debates (watch her 2006 deabates)
8.Neutralizes identity politics from obama.
9. good looking
10.liberals hate her.

don't let the media fool you. She is the best choice by a mile.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 5:26PM

I have to admit, I burst out laughing when I saw your idea of "best candidate".

1. Starpower -- let's substitute Sandra Bullock instead. She's a REAL star, and looks great all the time. Don't forget, O'Sarah looks really awful without her makeup, hairpieces, and spandex nylons.
2. Charisma. I'd prefer someone who projected an honest personality ALL THE TIME, instead of turning the charisma on and off, depending on who's in front of her. O'Sarah has been a b!tch on wheels to a lot of people who've disagreed with her.
3. Crowds. O RLY? Have you SEEN the crowds that have flocked to her lately? Mostly old, flabby, gray-haired, grungy, given to slogans on t-shirts, inarticulate or ignorant when asked why they like O'Sarah or what she stands for, then whiny and defensive when their ignorance is revealed.
4. Values. Case in point = humiliating her promiscuous pregnant daughter in front of the voting public to "prove" rumors about said daughter were untrue -- instead of simply releasing a copy of her own medical records. Case in point = taking youngest daughter out of school for 2 months in late 2008, then for 4 months in late 2009 -- why? Babysitter for the infant? Lady-in-waiting to her own mother? We-don't-need-no-eddication? Case in point = widening rift between the mother and the father of her grandson Tripp by vilifying the 19 year old boy in state of AK press releases, in People magazine, to Fox "news", on her Facebook page, and now, allowing her "fans" on her Facebook page to promote a campaign to harass state of AK justices charged with the custody case of the grandson's parents.
5. Speeches. When she's written them herself, they're rambling, inarticulate, repetitive, nearly not understandable except to a very small segment of American society -- her fans, who claim to understand every word she says. If the speeches are understandable by most standards, she didn't write them. 'Nuf said.
6. Huge money. Oh, my. As a personal fortune to a person who's never really had much money, maybe so (although the Palins had a net worth of about $2M before she quit). But as a many-millions fundraiser -- not much. And I doubt she's capable of churning out another book -- based on what? She's written about EVERYTHING in her life up to now.
7. Debates. Oh, my "she does really well"? She doesn't debate AT ALL. She talks about what she wants to talk about, which is 1) her list of talking points, and 2) never the topic the moderator brings up, and what everyone else is talking about. There are videos of those gubernatorial debates and the one with Biden that prove that. She was actually an inept "debater".
8. Neutralizes identity politics. O'Sarah ISN'T the face of "identity politics"? Coulda fooled me.
9. Good looking. Yeah, I'm going to vote for the candidate that looks the best. Show my intelligence, yeah! OMG...
10. Liberals hate her. NO, a thousand times NO! Independents, moderates, and progressive/liberals don't HATE O'Sarah. We ridicule her for her ignorance, her screechy voice, her pandering to the worst hatemongers (Eddie Burke, come on down), we point out her thousands upon thousands of lies with fact-checking to debunk every single one, we are still looking at that strange story she told (several different versions) about the birth of the Down Syndrome baby, and in fact, all of her pregnancies (seems there were two more no one knew about until she wrote about them in her book), and we feel sorrow for her children, who have been her political/celebrity props and constant attendants instead of being able to lead normal lives like the children of most other politicians and celebrities.

Sarah is our candidate--not RINO Romney.

No. I'm not kidding. By the way, SarahPAC donated to John McCain. I am not a McCain supporter, but Sarah Palin is.

William Henley, Wasilla| 1.8.10 @ 5:07PM

Jack, I am NOT a McCain supporter. He needs to go along with the rest of the RINO's however, Sarah does believe in honoring commitments. She is his friend and will back him just as he backed her when he choose her for VP. Sarah Palin is honorable and I would be disappointed if she did not support McCain and I do hope that giving money to his campaign is the only support that she gives him.

You wouldn't just happen to be making that up, now would you? Ya know, like a little creativity or somethin.?

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 8:37PM

I think he's right, Margie; Sarah's very loyal. :(

Laura| 1.8.10 @ 12:54PM

I'm not sure I agree with comments regarding Sarah Palin and JBS: she was a JBS fan during her tenure as Mayor. There are also multiple photos showing her with JBS materials. This was during the time her husband was a member of the AIP. Sarah Palin was an outspoken supporter of the AIP as well; in fact, she spoke at their conventions. There is some thought that she was also a member of the AIP, and at her recent Wasilla booksigning, she allowed JBS volunteers onsite to distribute literature. Which if true, just places her even further away from mainstream Repub antics. It's all well and good if you want to take sides on the JBS, but don't pick and choose among Sarah Palin's past associations to suit your arguments.

alwaysfiredup| 1.8.10 @ 3:18PM

I challenge you to provide any evidence at all that Palin was a member of the AIP. Any at all. "Some thought" doesn't cut it.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 3:47PM

It's a FACT that Todd Palin was a registered member of the secessionist Alaska Independence Party from October 1995 until July 2002, save for a few months in 2000 when he changed his registration to undeclared.

It's a FACT that Sarah Palin videotape-addressed the 2008 AIP Convention: "I'm Governor Sarah Palin, and I am delighted to welcome you to the 2008 Alaska Independence Party Convention in the golden heart city of Fairbanks. Your party plays an important role in our state's politics... "Good luck on a successful and inspiring convention. Keep up the good work, and god bless you."

It's a FACT that the AIP's chairwoman, Lynette Clark, in September 2008 said of Sarah Palin, "I've admired Sarah from the first time I met her at the 2006 AIP convention. She impressed me so much. She's Alaskan to the bone; she's a damn good gal.
"As I was listening to her, I thought she sounds like what we've been saying for years. I thought to myself, 'My God, she sounds just like Joe Vogler.'" [Joe Vogler was the founder of the Alaskan Independence Party]

hrh| 1.8.10 @ 3:55PM

And those facts prove that Palin attracts more than the Republican base.

That's your point, right?

William Henley, Wasilla| 1.8.10 @ 5:15PM

Laura| 1.8.10 @ 12:54PM, Really not much to say to your statement other than you are a flat out liar. I was at the Wasilla book-signing and no one was handing out flyers except for a couple of Tea-party persons.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 3:47PM, I see that you say "it's a fact" and "it's a fact' but what I don't see are your links to prove your facts. Almost all (87%) of Alaskans considered Sarah to be the best thing to ever happen to Alaska. We are diverse up here and about the only ones who don't like her are the paid trolls (by soros org.) Are you one of them? You Betcha!

Red Phillips | 1.8.10 @ 5:30PM

So WH, would it be a bad thing if the facts above were true? What is so scandalous about the AIP? It is ideologically similar to the Constitution Party. Is the CP scandalous? The AIP once elected a Gov. of the state of Alaska.

Palin’s willingness to address the AIP and Alaska Libertarian Party speaks well of her. It was her capitulation to the cookie-cutter neo-conservatism of the McCain campaign that was disappointing.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 6:03PM

You've heard of Google, haven't you? It's a search engine.

What you do is, type in the search box "Sarah Palin AIP convention speech" and see what comes up. And/or type in "Todd Palin AIP" and see what comes up.

When more than a dozen stories from both conservative and progressive sites document the same information, I'd call that "fact".

Try doing a little research yourself. Do some of the "heavy lifting" you're demanding of others.

BTW, that 87% you're talking about (as you say, "considerED", not "still consider") dates back to mere weeks before O'Sarah was tagged by John McCain to be his VP choice. What happened then? Yeah, she authorized an additional $1,200 payout from the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend surplus to each and every Alaska resident -- that'd make ANYBODY popular for a while. Her approval ratings have plummeted faster than any other politician except George Bush ever since then.

No, I'm not paid to type all this. Except by Social Security, that is. I got all the time in the world to spend on blogs like this...

What about you? You're a Wasilla resident. Do YOU work? At what? Why are you on this blog at 1:30 Alaska time on Friday afternoon? Who's paying YOU to comment on blogs?

---------------

As for you calling Laura a liar, she wasn't far off in her assessment of the Wasilla booksigning. Yes, there were the local teabagger organization (calling themselves the "Conservative Patriots") "everywhere" at the booksigning, as one attendee said. But there was one guy who might be worse than a "JBS volunteer" handing out brochures at the Wasilla booksigning. He was a LaRouche disciple with some very offensive material.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com.....e0f6c8.jpg
also, http://tinyurl.com/yhz9p5r

You know that Lyndon LaRouche has been a Marxist, a Trotskyite, and a neo-Nazi, don't you? (interesting note: earlier this year LaRouche said he supported a single-payer health care plan)

I just don't understand why this guy wasn't hustled out like the Alaska bloggers on Todd Palin's list were -- unless he was there on the Palins' approval.

Holmby| 1.8.10 @ 6:12PM

Karen and Laura are the same nasty troll. Ignore the loser(s).

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 8:39PM

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 6:20PM

And you're Brad Pitt in disguise, I suppose?

Nah, tell me you look more like George Clooney!

I've been on message boards and blogs for the past 10 years (and I'm happy to have finally reached Medicare age! Whoopee! I don't have to worry about MY health care insurance any more!!!) and I've NEVER ever seen a blogger guy who's finally put up a picture of his real self who turns out to be a real looker.

Most of the guy bloggers are slovenly, overweight, wear flannel plaid shirts over t-shirts with printed slogans on them that they got free at some place handing them out, nearly always are wearing a ball cap and if someone can get them to doff the cap, they're nearly bald underneath.

Is that you, Holmby?

Yes, I'm overweight -- as are many 65 year old women. I'm still quite attractive because I still have all my own teeth, my skin is less lined than Sarah Palin's WITHOUT ANY cosmetic enhancement like she underwent this last August (for you women out there, tell your daughters to start moisturizing their skin at puberty, and NEVER STOP -- and don't smoke), and my hair is still natural color light brown with only about 30 gray hairs.

You know by now Sarah Palin isn't attractive under all that makeup and fake hair and stuff. Don't you?

http://www.celebrity-gossip.ne.....2169-8.jpg

Brian72| 1.8.10 @ 6:50PM

What an admirable passtime for an overweight 65 year old woman to be running down the looks of another woman with such catty vindictiveness.

I bet you are a real sweetheart in person, so much nicer than that devil diva Sarah Palin! Hahahaha

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 7:03PM

Love it!

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 8:11PM

Me, to0. For once, Brian72 is right.

I'm not ashamed about being overweight. It comes with the territory. Yeah, I'm a sweetheart.

And yes, O'Sarah is a diva, but I really suspect she's much worse than "that devil". I've been concerned about what dark force is within her ever since that first stump speech.

Brian72| 1.9.10 @ 11:21AM

Dear KarenJ, you poor misguided sicko.
If anyone is wrestling with dark forces from within, it is you and your rather disturbing obsession to trash, smear and slander a decent woman whom you clearly hate on a personal level, probably because she has everything that you never, ever will. That would be professional success, personal happiness and contentment, the respect and admiration of millions of Americans.
All you've got is your black hole of hatred in your head, and your gubmint check. Enjoy it, it is all you ever will have. Hahahahahaha!

Tennessean1942| 1.8.10 @ 8:17PM

KarenJ says: "Yes, I'm overweight "

Like we didn't know that.

LOL

Holmby| 1.8.10 @ 8:42PM

Overweight? Karen's thighs erupt into flames when she tries to walk. It's that friction, baby!

Tennessean1942| 1.9.10 @ 8:28AM

KarenJ: "..tell your daughters to start moisturizing their skin at puberty, and NEVER STOP"

Yes, but Karen you don't have to do it continuously and with such speed & passion.

Yeah, sure, Karen. You're lonely and bored--you've driven off everybody who ever care about you, so of course you meant 'more' than just facial skin. We get it.

You're a bitter, fat old loser. Who would love you?

William Henley, Wasilla| 1.8.10 @ 5:20PM

KarenJ, you should listen to the O'biden/Palin debate and then read the Constitution. Sarah knows what the VP job entails as she quoted it word for word from the constitution. Idiot!

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 8:25PM

Oh, please!

Sarah Palin gave an interview to Larry Kudlow Aug 1, 2008 in which she said, “As for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?"

http://www.cnbc.com/id/25970197

(Palin also said she would not accept the VP role [or, go "to that den of vipers in Washington," as the interviewer put it] in an appearance in June [2008] with CNN's Glenn Beck -- http://latimesblogs.latimes.co.....-pres.html )

She and then-Senator Biden "debated" (although Palin's technique could hardly be called debating) on October 2, 2008.

She had MORE THAN TWO MONTHS to bone up on what the VP does! If she was able to quote it from the Constitution, after studying up for 2 months, good for her!

Brian72| 1.9.10 @ 11:30AM

You moron, you really don't understand politics very well do you?

Obama said in 2006 he could not run for President because he wasn't ready yet. Then he turned around and ran for President anyway. He's a liar.

Hillary Clinton said during her Senate re-election campaign in 2006 several times she had no intention of abandoning the people of New York State to spend her entire second Senate term running for President. Of course, she knew all along that is exactly what she intended to do, and that is exactly what she did. Liar.

That Larry Kudlow interview, which I have seen a few times, was a clear message to McCain and his people that if she were to be picked as the VP nominee, she would not be comfortable with a do-nothing ceremonial position, but would want some clear goals to work toward in that position, since every one knows that what the VP does every day is exactly what the President asks of them. What would that be in this case? That is all she was doing. Of course, you know that and are a liar, or you are just too dumb to get the subtleties of political positioning.

As far as "boning up on what the VP does", in the debate with Biden it was Biden who referenced the wrong part of the Constitution when asked about the duties of the VP, and Sarah got it right.
Not that you give a crap about the actual facts.

This site shows a picture of Sarah as mayor of Wasilla, having the JBS letter on her desk. It was taken during the same time that her husband was a member of of the AIP (which she tried to deny during the '08 campaign):

http://breepalin.blogspot.com/.....biden.html

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 3:52PM

I had some remarks already written up -- this is as good a place to add them:

Sarah Palin consented to having a picture taken of her apparently reading a John Birch Society magazine back in 1995 when she was a Wasilla City Council member (one year before she was elected mayor).

This is reported at Ben Smith's Politico page, and there was some pushback from several right wing blogs.

The problem with what the right wing bloggers are saying to defend Sarah Palin's choice of reading material, is that Sarah Palin has ALWAYS controlled very tightly what her public image is -- at least until her hairdresser blurted out that she was losing hair last June, and Palin had another series of plastic surgery procedures last August, and those awful December Hawaii vacation pictures surfaced -- and if she didn't WANT to be connected in any way to the John Birch Society, she would never have let that picture see the light of day.

As it is, apparently that picture held a place of honor in the Palin or the Heath household, because it was released to the media in September 2008 by "Sarah Palin's family".

Holmby| 1.8.10 @ 5:10PM

Won't work trolls. It's too late. You fools won't stand in Sarah's way--she's on her way to the top.

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 1:13PM

What?

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 4:02PM

It's INTENDED as satire, chum.

The thrust of the satire is to point out that Sarah Palin was not the biological mother of Trig. We think, however, that she DID adopt him, which makes her technically his mother.

The focus is on HER, not poor little Trig.

Except -- over this past fall -- so called "Trig Truther" bloggers began to worry about his care and therapy, especially during that book tour when he was paraded around barely clothed, often without shoes or socks, no head covering, in 40 degree weather or snow, or at 11 PM at night, during the height of the H1N1 flu season -- a not-yet-2-years-old toddler with the fragile health of the typical Down Syndrome child.

With a known heart condition, he's also spent most of his 2 years of life flying at altitude from place to place, which places a considerable strain on fragile hearts -- why?

Why was he not at home in Wasilla the whole time, being cared for by his nanny and the therapists who should have been working with him EVERY DAY?

Soooo concerned about this little boy with special needs that you spend your whole worthless pitiful life slandering his parentage and siblings.

You are sick. Truly sick. I hope you and Andy Sullivan wind up as room mates at the mental institution one day.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 8:37PM

That's the remarkable thing about Sarah Palin fans. They never EVER display any concern or curiosity about any of Palin's children except when it might reflect on her image.

I'll bet the majority of Sarah Palin fans never even HEARD of the term "special needs" until little Trig was carried around under those bright, hot lights of the RNC. The term sure is getting a work out now.

Did you hear about the resounding silence outside the state courthouse in Alaska where the "Barracuda Brigade" demonstration against the Bristol vs. Levi custody judges had nada, zip, zero in attendance? It was even less successful than the demonstration against Dave Letterman, when 35 people showed, 20 of them from the media.

The American Conservative Union asked FedEx for a check for $2 million to $3 million in return for the group’s support in a bitter legislative dispute, then the group’s chairman flipped and sided with UPS after FedEx refused to pay.

For the $2 million plus, ACU offered a range of services that included: “Producing op-eds and articles written by ACU’s Chairman David Keene and/or other members of the ACU’s board of directors. (Note that Mr. Keene writes a weekly column that appears in The Hill.)” [snip]
---------------------------------------
The real proof:

Here are 3 VERY interesting videos of John Ziegler interviewing Keene at CPAC. Watch for yourself to understand why a candidate may want to distance themselves from this organization as it now exists.

If you don't watch the videos, I don't think you can intelligently discuss the matter at hand. Just my opinion of course.

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 1:38PM

Unfortunately, no one knows for sure why Palin does anything (e.g. why did she really quit her job?). Why are we always having to come up with rationales and suppositions for her decisions? I want a candidate who clearly fights for conservative values.

Laura| 1.8.10 @ 1:57PM

I agree. I have also wondered why. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that Mrs. Palin does not come forward herself to explain those decisions or expand on her comments. She does not make use of the MSM as a traditional candidate or political person might, as a platform to articulate and promote their positions and values. Whatever your feelings about Sunday morning talk shows, it's an arena where many aspiring political folks have the opportunity to talk about themselves. You cannot promote your agenda through dubious avenues like Facebook and Twitter, for heaven's sake, and expect the electorate to accept that as all you have to say. I reject the reasoning that Mrs. Palin will not be interviewed because the MSM is 'out to get her'; I often wonder if she understands that if she becomes a viable candidate, she WILL have to do interviews, with many different outlets, and will be asked questions she will have to answer. As someone running for public office, she should expect no less, and certainly receive no special treatment.

hrh| 1.8.10 @ 4:00PM

Wow, just wow.

Maybe it's because you people don't watch, read, or listen to anything from Palin herself.

All your sources are secondhand.

Did you listen to her resignation speeches on 7/2 and 7/26?

Did you read her book?

Did you listen to any of her dozens of interviews during the campaign? Yes, I said during the campaign? Did you know that in the last 2 weeks, she did more interviews than any of the other candidates?

Try primary sources?

And try not doubting everything the primary source says...

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 4:19PM

Yes, I have read and listened to her. I have no idea why Sarah Palin quit her job. Please explain it to me. Thanks.

Glen| 1.8.10 @ 6:24PM

Jack, come on. This has been covered over and over again. Let me ask you, if you had a job where something you did in every given week would prompt a formal ethics investigation on a totally frivolous charge, to which you had to pay for your own legal defense even though you knew you would be exonerated, and you knew it wasn't going to stop, and you knew you would be bankrupted by the legal fees, and you had no time to actually do your job... would you stay in that job?

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 8:43PM

Trouble is, that's what Sarah Palin SAID the problems were -- and so many of the statements she's made even as far back as her mayoral days in Wasilla have been shown to be not entirely truthful -- it's hard to take what she said about her 2-1/2 years as governor at face value.

Even the amount she said for the state of Alaska's expenses for her ethics complaints investigations was so hyperinflated that it was fact-checked, and found to be grossly wrong, in that many fees were counted twice and three times over, and that some fees that would have been paid anyway -- as normal day to day business -- were added in the ethics complaint investigation fees.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 8:47PM

More lies from the Palin stalker.

Tennessean1942| 1.9.10 @ 8:32AM

KarenJ sez: "so many of the statements she's made even as far back as her mayoral days in Wasilla have been shown to be not entirely truthful -- it's hard to take what she said about her 2-1/2 years as governor at face value. "

So 87% of the Alaska voters were ignorant fools?

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KarenJ| 1.10.10 @ 7:27PM

You do realize, don't you, that only 114,697 citizens of Alaska actually voted for Sarah Palin for governor, don't you? Out of a total 521,000 eligible Alaskan voters?

Your 87% approval rating (right after the $1,200 PFD unexpected additional rebate she authorized) amounts to 99,786 Alaskans...

THINK AGAIN! Her book was written by a ghost writer, and she has SEVERAL ghostwriters on her FaceBook.

Proof?

A) listen to her when she speaks unscripted. Totally unintelligible word salad.

B) The style of writing changes often, and certain writers will put tons and tons of references at the end of their post - $arah has no idea what those references are there for (as shown in her book of lies, where she could not even get herself to put an itinerary/reference/source list)

C) When Hannity asked her in his recent interview about a recent post on her FB, she totally got the deer-in-headlight look, and could not answer, because she did not know what was in that particular post.

Romney is just a Republican Obama.

Glen| 1.8.10 @ 6:33PM

A) Nobody speaks like they write. Nobody.

B) The style of writing changes depending on her purpose. When she's saying Happy Birthday to Margaret Thatcher or wishing her supporters a Merry Christmas, she writes differently than when she is developing a scholarly argument against the writings of Zeke Emanual.

C) The recent interview with Hannity was on the radio. Where do you see the way she looked?

It's hard enough to listen to Sarah Palin screech through a radio or television interview (most recently, Sean Hannity, when she babbled over her old worn-out debunked "Lie of the Year" talking points), but it's nearly unbearable to listen through a John Ziegler commentary. Every fifth word from that man is "I", "my", "me" or "mine". Did he mention his Palin documentary again?

That is just an ignorant comment to make. She has spoken at several charity events before and after being the Governor of Alaska.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 4:17PM

I'm not interested in the "before" events -- I know she spoke at that "Right to Life" event in Indiana right in the middle of the Alaska legislative session, which only lasts 60 days.

But what about "after" she quit "being the Governor"? She disappeared right after the Quit Speech July 26 for six weeks, ostensibly to go down to San Diego and write her book (where the uncredited Lynn Vincent lives) but it's known that Palin had plastic surgery while she was in California, and need that time out of the public eye to heal up (she actually still had problems with healing even during the book tour -- an abscess near her right ear).

She flew to Hong Kong for a speech Sept 23rd, and every speech since then has had a price tag. She's had a lot of publicity about FUTURE so-called charity functions, but none have come to pass, including that meal with the eBay winner or Laura Ingraham's charity or the Canadian children's charity.

Compare some of her 2008 pictures face-forward with some of the pictures from September 2009 and thereafter.

She's lost that "salmon jaw" she was famous for (that's why I think she suffered an abscess near her right ear most of the book tour). Her eyebrows are different (Botox?), and her chin is quite a bit different, more pointed, less rounded.

Are you aware that Palin has been a Bircher for years?

hrh| 1.8.10 @ 4:05PM

Not to stir anything up?

Ha. You make me laugh.

Hometown facts.

Holmby| 1.8.10 @ 5:21PM

Mae, the only thing hometown about you is the size of your humongous rear end. Troll.

Scott| 1.8.10 @ 1:55PM

Did you criticize Keene when he called Palin: "Whining." " Rock star." " Not ready for primetime." "More difficult to envision than it was at the time of the election." He said it in July, 2009, so it's not ancient history. Maybe you called Keene out on it, and I didn't catch it.

http://www.politico.com/news/s.....31254.html

If Keene wasn't tainted with Fed Ex, Arlen Specter and Birchers, not to mention his affection for her possible competitor, Romney, and therefore possibly willing to smear her as other Romney advisers did before the election was over, it might be a bit easier to question Palin's motives. So what exactly is her motivation to attend CPAC? To act like they are actually part of the conservative movement? Wait. They got the Birchers in. That's pretty conservative, I guess.

Thomas| 1.8.10 @ 2:17PM

CPAC is largely obsolete. It is becoming politically mainstream is in fact in business simply to benefit the organizers and the Republican Party. John McCain was a speaker at last year's CPAC and there is no one who would ever accuse him of being conservative.

If I was a conservative running for national office on a conservative platform, the last place I would appear is at CPAC. They are largely irrelevent.

Mae| 1.8.10 @ 2:17PM

When will folks on the national level understand that Palin likes to drum up controversy? That is the name of the game she plays. Look I was born and raised inWasilla and Palin thrives on makin, takin and creating fights. Everything she has done in her career is based on makin fights, fighting the good people fight... think about it, think about her past involvement in events... She makes a controversy of the simplest questions asked in a roundtable canidate forum. When there is no need for one and when no other canidate plays that fightin game. If others do no engage in the fight she tries to well-up, then they are not mainstream and/or corrupt.

Palin has a pattern, like most political figures, however unlike most political figures, she enjoys the fist fights over her.

sue| 1.8.10 @ 3:44PM

Laura| 1.8.10 @ 2:45PM

Ken, you seem to be a plain-spoken fellow, so understand when I say that a useful motto for Mrs. Palin's fans should be 'Nothing to hide? Then nothing to fear.', I mean just that. If you're operating from a position of truth and integrity, then there is no need to fear or respond to comments that you don't like. When fans like yourself respond to comments about or criticisms of Mrs. Palin with either insults or threats, it doesn't help your cause or Mrs. Palin's credibility. It's how some folks ended up with the moniker 'wing-nut'.

Please don't. For all you know the libtard piece of crud is a guy.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 4:27PM

No, she WASN'T "kind enough". In fact, in that book you apparently haven't read yet, she indulged herself in several childish "mean girl" snide insults to the woman who has filed so many ethics violation complaints against her and who was DOING HER JOB when she pointed out the inappropriate dress of Palin's administrative staff.

In fact, there were so many "mean girl" insults to so many hard-working people in both Alaska politics and national politics, it's a wonder anyone will have anything to do with Sarah Palin.

The only outlet for her continued childish tantrums and railing against authority is the Teabagger movement -- so it's no surprise she's latched onto them as her new "base".

Good luck with that, O'Sarah. Someone hit the lever about the time your book was published, and the vortex is about to suck you down.

Tennessean1942| 1.8.10 @ 4:34PM

Hey, hon', you're the poster girl for liberal fear, ain't cha' !!

Liberal Reader| 1.8.10 @ 2:46PM

Mr Hillyer,

You write opinions here that drive me up the wall. But I have to hand it to you: you've got guts. How many conservatives are willing to go on record criticizing Palin?

Naturally, you'll be accused of a "vicious attack" against Palin. (There is no such thing as a plain "attack" on Palin. Only "vicious attack.")

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 4:35PM

Yeah -- when O'Sarah attacks someone else, it's always with her pure and good motives, also, too.

Like, does anyone ever ask themselves why she's constantly comparing herself to President Obama (challenging him to a race, which she'd LOSE now that we know she has cottage-cheese thighs), and constantly dissing him by not calling him by his title, and issuing these one-way, behind-the-Oz-curtain Facebook screeds every three days -- as if she needs a "national attention fix" that often?

Her fans certainly don't. But the rest of us, who take everything she says with a grain of salt because she's proven to stretch the truth a great deal of the time, are beginning to ask, why does anyone pay any attention at all to this woman?

She's ignorant, reactionary, narcissistic, childish, defensive, whiny, untrusting, stubborn, willful -- just ask Steve Schmidt -- or better yet, listen to him on 60 Minutes this upcoming Sunday.

Holmby| 1.8.10 @ 5:29PM

You'll be making an important first step.

The truth is CPAC needs Palin a whole lot more than Palin needs CPAC. Ask yourself this question, what does CPAC offer Palin that she doesn't already have. A platform to spread her views? She's already has one. An opportunity to connect to the grassroots? She practically has the base already sewed up. An opportunity to compete against the other 2012 hopefuls? There isn't a single other Republican moving in her orbit. So why is everyone so shocked that Palin said "thanks but no thanks" to CPAC for whatever reason she wants?

I would be called an old-time conservative. A paleo-conservative, with a bit of small-l Libertarian in me. Pat Buchanan, Reagan, Ron Paul, Sarah Palin, Bill Buckley etc.would be my heroes. Not Gingrich, Romney, McCain, Huckabee, Bushes, etc..

Sarah Palin is ditching CPAC because the Birchers are a co-host. Smart move, dumb? My guess it is the smart move, given that the Birchers, while I sympathize with their little "l" libertarianism, are a bit odd. Plus, it is probably wise for a conservative to quietly ask themselves before an important decision: "What would WFB, Jr. do?" (Christopher Buckley might consider that). @Jeff: " 'Advice for Gov. Palin' would seem to be a more appropriate title."

Newsflash: She's NOT the governor any more, and as an Alaskan I resent the way people try to pretend she has any standing at all up here. She quit. She blew us off and tried to pretend it was for our good and not hers. She loved being governor and disliked governing. She wanted to cash in on her fame, and she wanted to create more fame so she could make even more money. She used the ethics complaints as a pretext, and she put out incomplete and incorrect information about how much the complaints cost to make herself into a victim. (The complaint she filed against herself to avoid the established process cost far, far more than any other complaint. She fails to mention that.) If people knew how casually and constantly she lies, they'd be scanning the horizon for somebody with demonstrabe integrity to lead the way.

But too many people are not willing to look honestly at Palin's actions and words because, let's face it, it's pretty sad being a conservative these days, and she makes it seem all fiery and fun.

But you need to ask yourselves: If she found it that easy and convenient to break her oath to serve her "beloved" Alaskans, what makes you think she's not going to leave you in the lurch for her own self-interest? Why is she so afraid to leave her Facebook foxhole and stand behind her words (assuming she wrote them, which seems highly unlikely)? Why does she play these coy little games instead of being forthright and honest about her plans?

Call me names, but if you really think you're a conservative, you'll do some deep research, listen to some of her knowledgeable critics, and consider whether it's remotely possible that Mrs. Palin has nobody's interests but her own at heart.

Good for her, getting rich and famous. It's the American way. But for her to continue piously claiming she has a "servant's heart" is patent BS.

hrh| 1.8.10 @ 4:11PM

Thanks for that, Democrat. I'm very interested in hearing your opinion, Democrat.

And Alaskan, I'm glad to know you don't mind wasting $2 million dollars plus the salaries of all the state staffers who are s'posed to be working for you, but are instead tied up working for about 5 Alaskans who collectively filed more than 20 ethics complaints and I don't know how many FOIAs. I guess you're sad that you won't have to be paying those dollars anymore and that your state staffers can get back to working for you now. I feel for you, Alaskan.

Oh and BTW? Another one of those lawsuits was dismissed. Just this week.

I'm sure you're thrilled about it.

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 4:32PM

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 9:36PM

She spent nearly a million dollars and logged thousands of miles just flying around the state to multiple Governor's Picnics just to say goodbye.

She said she wasn't going to do that, per her resignation speech: "I thought about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks... travel around the state, to the Lower 48 (maybe), overseas on international trade - as so many politicians do. And then I thought - that's what's wrong - many just accept that lame duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck, and 'milk it'. I'm not putting Alaska through that - I promised efficiencies and effectiveness! ? That's not how I am wired. I am not wired to operate under the same old 'politics as usual.' I promised that four years ago - and I meant it."

That's TWICE she said "four years ago"! In another part of her speech: "I promised even four years ago to show MY independence... no more conventional "politics as usual".

Four years prior to her resignation speech, she was a private citizen. She wasn't even RUNNING for governor then.

She insisted on being called Governor at the Mall of America, and who knows where else, but said this in her resignation speech: "I've never believed that I, nor anyone else, needs a title to do this - to make a difference..."

She also confused the USA's national debt with the deficit, apparently: " Some of those dollars would harm Alaska and harm America - I resisted those dollars because of the obscene national debt we're forcing our children to pay, because of today's Big Government spending..."

As population increases, isn't it inevitable that government will "grow"? As new problems emerge that cross state boundaries and affect millions of people -- isn't it inevitable that principled conservative politicians will want to resolve those problems and, in the process, that might involve government activity?

CPAC is a corruptocrat org ruled by establishment insiders that most of us outside the beltway have had enough of in this lifetime. I don't think you have a clue what most of us cons outside the beltway think of you and the rest of the group of insiders. The very fact that Birchers are allowed to sponsor is enough to reject the entire group based on that alone.

Michael| 1.8.10 @ 4:40PM

The idea that Sarah is not attending CPAC due to the Bircher sponsorship is bull. She had a Bircher working the waiting line at her book signing in Wasilla 2 weeks ago. I really feel it's a petty disagreement with Keene, that people are misunderstanding as some sort of policy stand.

ernie1241| 1.31.10 @ 1:03PM

Michael: I hope your interpretation is not correct -- because if, like Cong. Ron Paul, Sarah decides at some point to explicitly endorse the Birch Society -- then it will be the end of whatever chance she has for a further political career.

As I previously stated in a message posted here, most people are clueless about the underlying ideology which informs JBS thinking.

SO THE QUESTION IS: Does Sarah Palin buy into these JBS premises?

For example: In 2002, the JBS published a new edition of JBS founder Robert Welch's so-called "private letter", entitled The Politician. The JBS describes this edition on the back cover as "perhaps the most devestating expose of the last century" because it "tells the bitter, but little known, truth" about our postwar history.

Among the "truths" which the JBS wants everyone to read and believe is that President Eisenhower and virtually all of our political leaders and government officials during the past 8 decades have been traitors and conspirators.

And to bring this message into contemporary history, the back cover of the 2002 edition states:

"But most importantly The Politician exposes that 'conspiracy of gangsters' which even now is setting America's foreign and domestic policy."

The "conspiracy of gangsters" quote is lifted from the following comment by Welch in The Politician:

"To paraphrase Elizabeth Churchill Brown, 'the only enemies the American people have to fear are the enemies in their midst.' The most conspicuous and injurious of these enemies today, I believe, is named Dwight David Eisenhower. He is either a willing agent, or an integral and important part, of a conspiracy of gangsters determined to rule the world at any cost.”

So the “conspiracy of gangsters” idea is not a reference to honest mistakes made by decent, honorable, principled individuals. Instead, it is a reference to traitors and conspirators who want to impose a world-wide tyranny and whom, therefore, are not legitimate competitors – but profound enemies of our way of life.

If you check my report on the JBS at http://ernie1241.googlepages.com/jbs-1 which is based upon FBI files and documents you will see scanned copies of pages 266-269 of the unpublished edition of The Politician which contains the statements by Welch in which he described President Eisenhower as a Communist traitor.

Incidentally, the themes, assertions, arguments, and evidence in The Politician differ not one iota from the themes, assertions, arguments and evidence used in JBS literature since its inception -- so it is quite disingenuous to propose that there was ever some sort of distinction between what the JBS believes versus what Mr. Welch wrote in his so-called "private letter".

For example: in private remarks to the first meeting of his JBS National Council on January 9, 1960, at the Union League Club in Chicago, Welch made these observations about the gravity of our situation:

“From a careful and realistic study of the mountainous pile of evidence that is there for all to see, certain terrifying conclusions are objectively inescapable. Among them are:
(1) The Communists are winning their large victories, as they always have, through the cumulative effect of small gains;
(2) They make these gains chiefly through the conniving assistance of many of the very diplomats and officials who are supposed to be opposing them;
(3) Communist influences are now in almost complete working control of our government;
(4) And hence, the United States Government is today, as it has been for many years, the most important and powerful single force promoting the world-wide Communist advance.” [A Confidential Report To Members Of The Council of The John Birch Society – minutes of 1/9/60 meeting held at Union League Club in Chicago IL, page 1-2; minutes signed by Robert Welch.]

Furthermore, according to the minutes of this meeting, Robert Welch stated:

"Today, gentlemen, I can assure you, without the slightest doubt in my own mind that the takeover at the top is, for all practical purposes, virtually complete. Whether you like it or not, or whether you believe it or not, our Federal Government is already, literally in the hands of the Communists." [Ibid, page 2]

"In our two states with the largest population, New York and California ...already the two present Governors are almost certainly actual Communists...Our Congress now contains a number of men like Adam Clayton Powell of New York and Charles Porter of Oregon, who are certainly actual Communists, and plenty more who are sympathetic to Communist purposes for either ideological or opportunistic reasons." [Ibid, page 7] [Note: the reference to Governors refers to Edmund G. Brown of California and Nelson Rockefeller of New York.]

"In the Senate, there are men like Stephen Young of Ohio, and Wayne Morse of Oregon, McNamara of Michigan, and Clifford Case of New Jersey and Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota and Estes Kefauver of Tennessee and John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, whom it is utter folly to think of as just liberals. Every one of those men is either an actual Communist or so completely a Communist sympathizer or agent that it makes no practical difference..." [Ibid, page 8]

“Our Supreme Court, dominated by Earl Warren and Felix Frankfurter and Hugo Black, is so visibly pro-Communist that no argument is even needed…And our federal courts below that level…are in many cases just as bad.” [Ibid, page 8]

"Our State Department is loaded with Communists from top to bottom, to the extent that our roll call of Ambassadors almost sounds like a list somebody has put together to start a Communist front." ... [Ibid, page 8]

"It is estimated from many reliable sources that from 70% to 90% of the responsible personnel in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare are Communists. Our Central Intelligence Agency under Allen Dulles is nothing more or less than an agency to promote Communism throughout the world...Almost all the other Departments are loaded with Communists and Communist sympathizers. And this generalization most specifically does include our whole Defense Department." [Ibid, page 8]

Looks like the GOP is going to have to actually WORK for their votes this election cycle. Self Indulgent much, taking so many people's votes for granted? SEE Posturing as the lesser of two evils, and failing miserably. And now a whine fest ensues. I don't know many Conservatives that identify with the Republican Party, shooting itself in the foot, than wanting sympathy for the consequences. Self Indulgent much? 10% unemployment, 2 wars, out of control spending by an out of control congress, how about that panty bomber? Isn't our National Security Agencies Great/SARC. How about our culture - has your teenager brought home his fisting pamphlet from public school yet, maybe he can graduate and get a job with the TSA? I am supposed to feel sorry for the Republicans? Dozens and dozens and dozens of reporters swooped into Alaska immediately after Palin was chosen as McCain's running mate. They turned over every rock in the state looking for dirt, or anything that might even hint of dirt. They got the bogus book ban story and a video of her in a Pentecostal church along with a visiting evangelist.

Do any of you honestly think all those reporters, that were hungry to destroy the woman, would have missed all the BS some are spewing on this blog? lol

How did that Keene endorsement of Arlen Specter work out? Oh, right, he took the NRSC's money and ran to the Democrat side.

Keene sure can pick 'em. Face it, he took the "C" out of CPAC.

I disagree that Mrs. Palin is the author of the posts on Facebook. She may agree with the premise but is not doing the writing. You cannot be as poorly spoken as she has been when captured on camera, and yet literate in writing. If you cannot articulate your positions face to face, it seems that it would be even more difficult to put them down on 'paper'. And posting policy statements on Facebook and Twitter, expecting the American public to take them seriously...these are websites for teenagers and young adults to catalogue their bar-hopping, beer-goggled conquests and give each other imaginary gifts. William Buckley is rolling over in his grave. Mrs. Palin, go on a serious LIVE Meet the Press type forum and talk directly to the American people about what you stand for. Please don't limit yourself to invitation-only events open only to those who can afford to hear you speak!

PALIN FOR PRESIDENT 2012| 1.8.10 @ 5:48PM

Buzz off Laura; we're sick of nasty liars like you.

Sapwolf| 1.8.10 @ 6:08PM

Not true Laura.

When I don't have my coffee, I forget my own name. I tend to be the same way. Normally, since reaching my 40's, I'm not as articulate verbally. But when writing, you get a chance to re-read comments, etc. Sarah is not as smooth a talker as say Huckabee, but she writes her own stuff.

Anybody who has seriously studied this woman, knows she writes her own stuff on Facebook, and that the style of writing in her autobiography matches her past writings.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 9:53PM

Hi, Sapwolf. How are things going over at C4P? How did the Barracuda Brigade protest go yesterday? Anyone get arrested for trying to suborn a state judicial official?

We have listened, too, to Sarah Palin's speeches -- and yes, she does write a lot of her own stuff, like a few of the speeches she's given. But NONE of the Facebook material.

She writes her Tweets. I think she even writes Bristol's and Willow's Tweets (like the one a week or so ago). And I think Sarah Palin has been writing Bristol's new Myspace for her, too ("working my butt off"? Sounds just like her mother a year ago)

Janice| 1.9.10 @ 2:09AM

Scary stalker. Palin should call the cops on you. You know too much about her personal life.

I feel like I should take a shower after I read your nasty drivel.

Karen| 1.8.10 @ 6:45PM

Laura, You most certainly can be more eloquent, precise and on target when writing as opposed to speaking. Let me try to help you understand why. With writing you can get out your initial thoughts, then step away and mull them over, go back and edit and tweak and generally wordsmith them until they are precisely what you want to say. Your argument is ludicrous.

Additionally, you are woefully ignorant of Facebook which has expanded far beyond the college gang. People of all generations are on Facebook to keep up with friends scattered far and wide as well as family. I recommend you look at the number of Fortune 500 companies who realize the force of Facebook and have created corporate Facebook pages.

Honey, you don't get it. Sarah Palin in talking to the American people on her terms. She's reach more people on Facebook than she would on Meet the Press. She doesn't NEED Meet the Press or anyone else. She is more than capable of getting her message out without them. She is controlling her message and it's galling those who believe that they have the right to tell the American people how and what someone thinks so we will know how and what to think.

Laura, you are out of touch.

Brian72| 1.8.10 @ 6:59PM

Very well said, only one problem. These people are not merely out of touch, they are certifiably bat-guano loony tunes. That is the only thing I would correct about what you have said.

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 7:58PM

She's controlling book sales on Facebook. You got it right that Facebook is a corporate platform. Totally agree.

No, I'm anti-liar, that's why I detest trolls like you.

Get it?

AKReport| 1.8.10 @ 5:23PM

the people who call palin a quitter are just being faux or uniformed. She left because it was economically impossible to keep her job when liberals exploited a loophole in the state ethics laws to put her into bankruptcy, and it would have become impossible to run for Potus while being GOV for 2 more years in a state 4 hours behind east coast time.

the loophole in the ethics law was that she had to pay legal fees out of pocket for dissmissed (bogus ethics complaints) most states (and the potus) have the taxpayers pay for ethics issues.

the fact that she left early had nothing to do with her abilitys to be Gov. or POTUS for that matter.

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 8:00PM

Palin supporters must face that many conservatives don't like a quitter--no matter what the reason. Nixon was going to be impeached, so he had to resign. And he committed a crime.

Holmby| 1.8.10 @ 8:57PM

Memo to Hillyer: Get over yourself.

Joe| 1.8.10 @ 5:30PM

Sarah is showing that principle and core believes are her motivation, not special interest. She is obviously becoming the one politician that is holding true to what her core principles demand, and isn't schmoozing with the power brokers of both the GOP and conservative organizations that have lost their core. That dirty game that specializes in special interest and back room deals, has defined the health care debate, and all of the democrat's legislative agenda. It's a game the little Alaskan alien is not willing to play, and all who care about what Washington has become should applaud her.

Laura| 1.8.10 @ 5:45PM

Are you kidding? Mrs. Palin is the protege of Fred Malek, Rupert Murdoch, James Dobson, and Franklin Graham. All four have advised her, all publicly acknowledge this, and some even escort her to DC insider social events. Don't take my word for it: google it. She met with Newt Gingrich and Bill Kristol in Alaska in the summer of 2007, on a conservative cruise: google it. She has had nothing but the best insider beltway advice. Google Palin and Karl Rove. He was calling her in Alaska prior to her VP nomination. You cannot BE in American politics without making deals and having someone powerful sponsor you...or schmoozing, as you put it. Both parties are party to 'that dirty game'. You're a fool if you think Mrs. Palin is independent. Remember, 'you gotta serve somebody'.

Sapwolf| 1.8.10 @ 6:01PM

The problem with David Keane, the ACU, and CPAC is:

1) Keane was bought off and this is not good for the image of the ACU/CPAC.
2) Keane is now considered more of an insider rather than an activist.
3) CPAC has over the years become more of an establishment/DC event. Yes it has some conservatives like Rush and Ann Coulter and Newt before he lost his credibility with the Scozzafava affair.
4) It is located in DC which lends to the feeling it is at least partially for 'insiders' more than 'outsiders'.
5) It has become the main vehicle for the GOP establishment of the east coast to push Mitt Romney.
6) Keane has had unkind words for Sarah in the past, implying that he does not take her seriously.
7) The JBS backing of the conference probably should have been avoided due to some embarrassing moments in its history.

If Sarah, the consummate outsider and common-sense conservative accepted after encountering 1 thru 7 above, it would have done tremendous damage I think to her credibility as a conservative, but one from the grassroots, sympathetic to the Tea Party Movement, and the outsider with the reform credentials. It would definitely appeared to people that she was kow-towing to Keane, let alone the establishment of the GOP.

Sarah made the correct choice here. However, I would not write off Sarah from a future visit in 2011 or 2012 at CPAC if the ACU can address the issues in 1 thru 7 above, including a probable resignation by David Keane. By getting back their creds. as a conference of conservative activists without the insider tainting or image, it can really bounce back as a stellar conference of principles rather than simply interested in money or influence or just pushing the latest establishment favorite.

By the way, since when in the world is it wrong to be a shrewd but principled politician?

This is gonna be a winner for 2010 for Sarah, the GOP, the Tea Party Movement, the SRLC, CPAC (due to stars like Rubio, etc. and the possibility of some reforms and image makeovers), and others who realize how deep a latrine DC has become.

NOTE: CPAC needs to get the hell out of DC and rotate the conference all over the country so that it helps with its image as a conservative activist conference open to more than just those who live on the east coast, eat brie and golf.

the405| 1.10.10 @ 11:52PM

Sapwolf,

The problem conservatives have with Palin's recent actions regarding CPAC and NTPC are...

1. Plain attending a first year conference with no track record for 100K fee is pay-for play of the worst kind. (She only accpeted for the fee nothing more)

2. You run around saying everyone who goes to CPAC put's "pocketbook over policy" while taking a 100K fee from a event that has done nothing to promote conservatism.

3. How can we trust NTPC head Judson Phillips when we know so little about him? Who made him leader of the Tea party movement?

4. NTPC is located in Nashville run by people who have no track record that we know little about. CPAC has put people into the house, white house and Senate. NTPC can only get speakers by paying their fees.

5. Mitt works CPAC very well. If Palin cant defeat Mitt at CPAC what makes you think she can defeat him in a 2012 Primary?

6. While Keene's comments about Palin "whihing" were out of line. It does not excuse Palin's smear of over 9000 people who attend CPAC saying they are sell outs. Two wrongs dont make a right.

7. NTPC has invited birther advocate Joseph Farah of World Net Daily as thier big Friday night speaker. Palin already had a scandal in regards to the birither movement and this is going to tie her further to that movement.

Frankly Palin made a stupid move in by dissing CPAC and the people who support it. If she tohught it would weaken CPAC and bring down Keene then she is going to be in for a rude awakening.

If NTPC has any problems (and with them barring press form thier event it looks like NTPC has something to hide) or if CPAC grows in size then Palin is going to take a big hit.

PALIN FOR PRESIDENT 2012| 1.13.10 @ 10:55PM

Romney's nothing.

Only a RINO wouldn't know that. You're no Conservative. Nice try, though.

nohype| 1.8.10 @ 6:02PM

Sarah Palin wears a visor and sets off controversy. She decides to attend one conference rather than another and sets off controversy. She is a private citizen and can do what she wants. If Romney had decided to skip one conference and attend another, would anyone care? Why the different standard for Palin?

By the way, the headline to this post was unnecessary and a low blow. But I guess it did what it was intended to do, which is bring in readers.

An appearance by Sarah Palin would be immediately covered as front page news by the government- run media, with split images of her with 1950's cutouts of John Birch Society rallies extolling the virtues of segregation and Bigotry. Not that the JBS stands for such p0licies now as the Org. has been largely reformed as of late. She has the wisdom to avoid months of bad leftist press that would result from her association with an appearance. Why should she be a lightning rod for the left at this early date? She will run and win the Republican nomination in 2012 and likely be sworn in on Jan. 20th, 2013 as the POTUS.

ernie1241| 1.31.10 @ 1:19PM

Blogforceone: You are mistaken in your contention that the JBS has "reformed". In its 51 years of existence it has never retracted ONE WORD of any derogatory statement it has made about any person or organization in its history.

Not even when it lost the historic precedent-setting libel lawsuit which cost them $400,000!

What HAS changed, is that the JBS has become much more PR-savvy. Its publications and website are very attractive and are designed to lure unsuspecting people into the Birch orbit in much the same manner that Communist front groups seduced liberals during the 1930's and 1940's.

Palin for President 2012!| 1.8.10 @ 6:26PM

A lot of these posters are sneaky Romneybots.

NO RINO ROMNEY!!

Karen| 1.8.10 @ 6:51PM

Romney doesn't stand a chance. Don't waste your breath. RomenyCare and Mormonism. Enuf said.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 7:22PM

I dislike his politics not his religion.

Jack| 1.8.10 @ 9:06PM

How about making some points about policy?

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 9:56PM

RomneyCare. Nothing more to be said. Romney is the Republican Obama.

Jack| 1.9.10 @ 2:05AM

A policy wonk you're not. But then again, you support Sarah Palin, someone who can't tell Sean Hannity the difference between Iraq and Iran, and who Bill O'Reilly schools about the Middle East. At least Mitt Romney served his term and isn't featured on tabloids.

Janice| 1.9.10 @ 4:03AM

RomneyCare = ObamaCare; devastating to RINO Romney.

We Conservatives are NOT real fond of the Marxist, Obama or his policies, if you've noticed.

Sorry.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 10:05PM

Yeah. Every page has something on it that can be fact-checked and found to be wrong, inaccurate, misleading, or an outright lie. This fact-checking has been done to my knowledge by three separate entities.

What's amazing is that every Palin supporter reads the same thing and doesn't realize this. No background knowledge about Palin's past, or curiosity, or whatever...

The funniest thing is, Governor Sanford has 'WAY worse problems than Sarah Palin ever did, and he's still hanging in there in South Carolina.

Tennessean1942| 1.8.10 @ 11:22PM

KarenJ said: "Every page has something on it that can be fact-checked and found to be wrong, inaccurate, misleading, or an outright lie. This fact-checking has been done to my knowledge by three separate entities. "

Wow. But she's ignorant. And a quitter!! She doesn't have a chance!! She's toast. Old news.

Right?

BTW, KarenJ, are you in either of these pictures?

Wow, those pics were harsh, so sad--probably true, too.

I thought you'd linked some photos of large farm animals grazing on the meadow.

Tennessean1942| 1.9.10 @ 11:47AM

KarenJ says: "What's amazing is that every Palin supporter reads the same thing and doesn't realize this. No background knowledge about Palin's past"

I know where she was born, the schools she attended, and who paid for them. I know she has governmental executive experience. I know she has been involved in an actual small business. I'm pretty sure that none of her acquaintances blew up government buildings to commit violent revolution against America. I've never heard that her pastor was a despicable, foul racist. Her father was a school teacher, not a card-carrying communist activist. Those are a few of the things I know about her.

I think you're the one lacking curiosity, not us.

PS: Are you _sure_ you're not in these pictures?

The effete intellectual snobs that claim leadership of the conservative movement have presided over its balkanization.Their quest for power and influence has splintered the movement and resulted in the nomination of the RINO king in 2008.Palin doesn't need these elitists and is letting them know it !

Don| 1.8.10 @ 7:23PM

The real problem with you moronic conservatives and you moronic insipid reasoning is....you gained so many liberals after 9/11 and the Dems just kept sending you more and more through the Bush years, that you just don't know what to do. Drop the whole anti government schitch. Go we love America and intend to defend her 'and' we can find government solutions to major problems for our citizens. Free market control of health care. Mac Donald's, Walmart, Google, all great free market american enterprises. But let's leave national defense, community crime fighting and health care to people not looking to profit.

billgibbs43| 1.8.10 @ 7:37PM

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 10:07PM

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 10:21PM

Something you'd know a lot about, Ms. Stalker.

Scary.

Tanc| 1.8.10 @ 8:42PM

Sarah has been given all the gifts she needs to lead by God. She may not be a perfect person, she may say and do strange things sometimes, and she may even be more interested in money than governing, but God knows what America needs right now and he gave us Sarah, therefor it's obvious why all good Americans will pick Sarah.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 9:05PM

So many loser Romneybots, so many loser RINOS like Romney;Romney will NEVER be president. Bet on it, trolls.

Tanc| 1.8.10 @ 9:16PM

There is no reason to doubt that Romney is a good family man, but he doesn't fully embody real American values the way Sarah does. The choice is clear.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 9:58PM

It's political not personal. Both of them are good people, Romney's just too liberal.

We are sick of RINOS--Mitt will NEVER be president. Wait and see.

KarenJ| 1.8.10 @ 10:09PM

Yeah, that's what we need. A theocratic bungling grifter who speaks in tongues.

MUCH better than a constitutional scholar.

Janice| 1.8.10 @ 10:25PM

He's a flip-flopping, RINO liberal, Karen--and that's why Myth Romney will NEVER be president. COUNT ON IT!

We know you Romneybots are dirty--you've sealed his fate.

Tanc| 1.8.10 @ 10:30PM

I think you're being disrespectful to what God want for his nation. John McCain was called upon to put his whole political career in jeopardy by introducing a seemingly incredulous prospect unto the nation. He did, now we all have Sarah to look to as she takes the reigns of the gift bestowed unto her to make all of America how she's fit, which is of course God's vision. It's sad and ironic that an honorable man like John McCain now has no credibility for this great act of courage, but the Lord works in mysterious ways. I'm sure McCain understands as I'm sure Sarah need not be concerned for she has greater work to be done.

Harden| 1.9.10 @ 12:22AM

It seems KarenJ had one abortion too many. Unfortunately, that is what happens to many liberal tarts, they need to satisfy that loss, with lies, hate and bitterness.

Janice| 1.9.10 @ 1:21AM

Great comment, Harden. Sadly, I believe you're right.

There's got to be a reason for so much hatred and bitterness. Too bad the 'Liberal Tart' doesn't know God. He could help.

Harden| 1.9.10 @ 12:26AM

Personally I'm glad Palin is shaking people like Keene and Hillyer up. So refreshing, after Obama turning out to be soooo typical and common, a garden variety clueless democrat.

Glen| 1.9.10 @ 12:32AM

Let's look at the last 34 years of presidential elections in terms of exciting candidates.

76 - Exciting beats boring.
80 - Exciting beats boring - Carter went from exciting to boring during his term
84 - Exciting beats boring
88 - Boring beats boring
92 - Exciting beats boring
96 - Exciting beats boring
00 - Boring beats boring
04 - Boring beats boring
08 - Exciting beats boring

Notice a trend? Exciting beats boring every time. No one in the Republican party can beat Obama except the only potential candidate who excites people. And that is clearly Palin. She is the country's only hope.

12 - Exciting vs. Exciting

Bring it on!

Harden| 1.9.10 @ 12:42AM

Good post, but ...

12 - Exciting vs. Exciting

That was 2008 with Palin in McCain's spot :).

Now it is:

12 Very Exciting (Palin) beats Boring and Wee-Wee'd (Obama or Clinton)

Glen| 1.9.10 @ 1:04AM

I would love to see Hillary challenge Obama for the '12 nomination. Either way whoever comes out the winner will be so bloodied that he or she will not stand a chance against the Repub.

I have been licking my chops for a Palin Obama prize fight since it became clear that Obama would defeat McCain. But the notion of a Sarah Hillary mud wrestle also savors the chops of this political theater junkie.

Lynnrockets | 1.9.10 @ 2:26PM

I think not. In the 2008 primaries Obama and Clinton had a battle royale and the winner still had no problem defeating the Republican.

Tennessean1942| 1.9.10 @ 2:48PM

True, but this time there will be a conservative at the top of the ticket.

Lynnrockets | 1.9.10 @ 3:29PM

Who might that be?

KarenJ| 1.9.10 @ 10:16PM

No one you'd know, Sprockets.

I just wanted to say my heartfelt 'thanks!' to all you 'conservatives' out there.
I usually frequent 'liberal' blogs, but every once-in-a-while, I venture out to see what goes on on the 'other' side.
I must say I am amazed at the mean and vile language, at the personal attacks, name calling, and at the total disregard of civility and facts.

I am glad I got my 'righty-fix' out of the way this early in the year!

Nobama| 1.9.10 @ 1:47AM

Well, how outrageous we are!! How could we? Shame on us for hurting your poor, delicate liberal feelings. Awww, poor widdle trolls; cry, moan, b!tch and complain--that's your whiny liberal mantra!

Great $$, why don't you mosey on back to your fellow 'tolerant', foul mouthed liberal morons over at Huff Po; you never use rough language or speak ill of Conservatives, right? Of course not!!

Just remember, you trolls called us foul names first. You loathsome slimeballs just aren't used to getting it thrown back in your face. Too bad, it's a new day!! lol

Tennessean1942| 1.9.10 @ 6:23AM

Glen:

I agree Glen, either would make an interesting election against Palin. It'd keep everyone enthralled.

But Clinton would have a better chance. Obama is starting to look like a Mr Dud, firing blanks, don't you think?

Glen| 1.9.10 @ 2:07AM

I've been saying to friends for a year that the Obama future depends on the 2010 elections. There is the Carter model and the Clinton model. Carter retained congress in 78 and lost his re-election bid. Clinton lost congress and was re-elected.

The difference is that a president who is opposed by congress can't get his agenda done. Whenever there is gridlock in DC the country thrives. The economy prospers when nothing happens in Washington. When Washington is active the economy freezes, waiting for the fallout of new legislation. That is what we are living through right now.

When the government is inactive, no matter what the laws are (to a degree), the American economy will find a way to prosper. Just give us the rules and we will play the game.

When the rules are in doubt, as they are now big time, the economy can't move. The Obama administration and Congress are killing the current economy, simply by threatening all of the rules. Nobody knows what to do, how to act, what decisions should be made.

The solution to all of the economic problems is to simply adjourn Congress indefinately. The rest of us will figure it all out.

The free market is uncannily brilliant. Without explanation.

Congress is predictably stupid. With 2000 pages of explanation.

Harden| 1.9.10 @ 1:36AM

From Ziegler's article:

"The main reason that Keene has gotten away with his shenanigans (at least until now) is that members of the conservative media are essentially bought off. Sadly and pathetically, it seems almost no one (expect maybe me) has been willing to give up a position on a panel or an invite to a party in order to expose the inherently corrupt nature of CPAC."

Hillyer?

Yep, Sarah is a laughing stock, has no chance at all, and will take the Rethugs with her when she falls.

Do it for the children.

Thank goodness somebody here has finally seen the light regarding Sarah Palin's commitment to her own self-interest to the detriment of the Republican party and conservatives. She will never miss an event where she can collect a dollar. The Bowling Convention? Give me a break.

IT’S ALL ABOUT SHE
(sung to the Harry Connick Jr. version of the song “It Had to Be You”)

It’s all about she
Who cares about you?
Her parents are clowns and poor Trig has downs
Oh, what will they do?
Palin and her crew
Say things so untrue
Health reform is bad, just ask her dad
They haven’t a clue

Is Sarah just mean?
Brain small like a bean?
She’s always so cross
But nobody’s boss
What’s with that hairdo?
Won’t have health reform if there’s a bill
You can shove your damn living will
It’s all about she, who cares about you?
She hasn’t a clue

(instrumental break)

Obama it seems
Might fulfill our dreams
Drive down health care costs
Republican loss
What will Palin do?
Keep her health plan if she likes it still
Who the hell needs a living will?
I certainly do, how about you?
I bet you do too

THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT LIBS| 1.9.10 @ 10:54PM

Lynn hates Sarah because Sarah's so beautiful. Sarah's a REAL woman.

Liberal women like Lynn , KarenJ, Laura, etc. have had multiple abortions and are embittered and lonely because of their "choices." They hate Sarah because they can't be Sarah.

Piteous, wrinkled hags; no one loves you and no one cares about you. You are invisible.

Lynnrockets | 1.9.10 @ 3:50PM

Tennessean1942 called KarenJ " a liar" twice and then described how he believes she masturbates.

You best be careful of that karma yourself.

SAME OLD LAME WHINE
(sung to the Dan Fogelberg song “Same Auld Lang Syne”)

Met Sarah Palin at a Walmart store
She was shoplifting like a thief
There was no sign of kids or the “First Dude”
‘Cuz Sarah brings home the beef

I recoiled from her aging face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She knew I saw the moose meat in her purse
And then she just fibbed and lied

I said I was not a security man
And then Sarah Palin was glad
She lacked any sense of embarrassment
At the thought that she was bagged

I asked if we could have a drink or two
Cuz she was such a rising star
We met “Joe Sixpack” at the liquor store
And we three went to a bar

We drank a toast to ignorance
We drank a toast to Mao
She tried to explain her head’s emptiness
But she did not know how

She said she’s married to a derelict
Who can’t keep a job if he tried
She would have like to say she loved the man
But she couldn’t stand the guy

I said “death panels” were the end for her
That she could turn a Red-State Blue
And did she fear her would-be son-in-law?
She just said, “Lynn, F_ _ _ you”

She said she hated all the pro-choice whores
And that she hoped they’d go to Hell
I asked if Coulter was a “he” or “she”?
Palin said she could not tell

She toasted her omnipotence
And asked us all to bow
I said, “so long and good riddance,
I must be leaving now”

Then one last toast to ignorance
Cuz it was closing time
She lacks a sense of eloquence
But has that old lame whine

The beers were empty and our tongues were tired
Another book signing today
She put her hat on and hopped on her broom
And I watched her fly away

She graduated from a “safety school”
So she has no-one else to blame
There’s no intelligence inside her dome
That’s why she is so lame.

Nobama| 1.9.10 @ 10:26PM

KarenJ,

I applaud your willingness to engage with Sarah's active and engaged base.

But you have to realize Palin's fans are set and feel any money spent to hear her pearls of wisdom is money well spent.

My thinking is the Americans who can afford to do this type of extracurricular stuff (travel to attend Teabagger rallies, buy books) must be doing very well under the current economy. Their mortgages must be paid, their kids college funds set and they have EXCELLENT health care and insurance for them to have the funds to support an unemployed grandmother from Wasilla.

So their complaints about the direction of the country are odd given how they are able to support Ms. Palin with money.

Leave them alone. This is the best time of their lives.

I hope you guys remember to thank the POTUS for all your prosperity and freedom!

Ask and ye shall receive:
1. July 28, 2008: Alaska lawmakers launched an investigation into whether Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power when she fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan over his refusal to let go a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce with Palin's sister. Stephen Branchflower, a special counsel leading the investigation, concluded Oct. 10 that Palin violated a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain. The firing itself was deemed lawful since Monegan was an at-will employee.

2. Oct. 24, 2008: Complaint contended Palin abused her power by charging the state when her children traveled with her. The personnel board found no wrongdoing, but in a Feb. 23 settlement Palin agreed to reimburse the state about $10,000 for costs associated with 10 trips found to be of questionable state interest among 72 travel authorizations studied. The money is due to the state on Tuesday.

3. Two complaints filed by McLeod alleged two of Palin's top aides misused their official positions for Palin's personal and political gain. The complaints said then-press secretary Bill McAllister and Kris Perry -- director of the governor's Anchorage office -- worked on state time to benefit Palin's interests during and after her vice presidential quest. Pending.

4. Contends Palin is misusing the governor's office for personal gain by securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust. The fund was recently established by supporters to help Palin pay off more than $500,000 in legal debts stemming from other ethics complaints, including troopergate. Complaint filed by Eagle River resident, Kim Chatman. Pending.

Pending.

Pending.

PALIN FOR PRESIDENT 2012| 1.13.10 @ 10:46PM

What a loser. In your haste to falsely accuse Palin of more drivel, you double posted. lol

Did you wet yourself, too? Pathetic.

lynnrockets | 1.14.10 @ 12:44AM

Sorry about double posting, but why would you say that I falsely accused her of anything? Those ethics violations are legitimate and/or still pending. Please face the facts.

PALIN FOR PRESIDENT 2012| 1.16.10 @ 6:18PM

You liberals can't help but lie. NONE of those ethics complaints was legit and everyone knows it. They've been dismissed.

Keep beating a dead horse, moron; but look around, you democrats are getting your ample azzes handed to you all over the country, including blue states.

Better watch it, you corrupt thugs are going to cease to exist. The American people are tired of the democrat cesspool tactics and corruption.

Very funny unless you are a tea bagger I guess.

Lynnrockets | 1.9.10 @ 11:59PM

This week’s edition of “Matches Made In Heaven” features Sarah Palin and the Teabaggers. The educationally challenged former ex-quitting governor of Alaska has been selected to be the keynote speaker at the First Annual National Tea Party Convention which will be held in Nashville in February.

Imagine the many misspelled and unintelligible signs, placards and t-shirts that are certain to be on display.

The event should resemble an outtake from the film, “Night Of The Living Dead“. Imagine all the drool, head scratching and confusion as the conventioneers tackle such difficult tasks as finding the bathrooms and remembering their hotel room numbers. They will rail against socialized programs as they fight to defend their socialized Medicare benefits. They will miss work and lose wages as they fight for tax cuts for their bosses. Eventually, Palin will deliver the closing speech in which she is certain to try to explain the fiction of “death panels” and why she cannot remember Joe Biden’s name. Finally Glenn Beck will take to the stage and announce that the attendance was greater than twenty million. This is the stuff of which comedians dream.

For more on Sarah Palin’s stupidity, do not forget to watch 60 Minutes tomorrow night. John McCain campaign manager, Steve Schmidt will dissect and analyze the lying Palin’s “debacle of historic and epic proportions”. Oh boy, get out your popcorn for this one. The segment will be without opposition because Palin is incapable of appearing on a show like 60 Minutes. She makes a fool of herself every time she attempts to be interviewed and therefore she avoids the true news shows.

THE BALLAD OF SARAH AND LEVI
(Sung to the Beatles song “The Ballad of John and Yoko”)

Posing in a condo in New York,
Levi about to remove his pants
He now has a knack
To annoy SarahPAC
Yet most of them will still take a glance

Christ you know it ain’t easy,
You know how hard it can be,
To play second fiddle,
To the Caribou-Barbie.

Sarah claims that she is embarrassed
Really, she just envies his fame
Katie Couric did say,
“Can you pray away gay?”
“And can you point out some newspapers by name?”.

Christ you know it ain’t easy,
Those interviews on TV.
Reviews were not glowing
For the brain-dead Sarah P.

Levi’s camped-out in the Manhattan Hilton,
Media folks want him to speak
The newspapers said,
“What’s going on in your head?”
He said, “I think Sarah just wants a quick peek”

Christ you know she’s so sleazy,
She won’t speak without a fee
The next show she’s doing
Will be with Sean Hannity

Keeping every penny of per-diem pay,
Lying about clothes to charity,
Daughter that’s unwed,
Is someone inbred?
Her chance to win election, pretty low – Think!

Relatives all getting arrested.
Family dignity in free-fall.
McCain’s folks still claim,
“Palin was to blame”
But Sarah says that they dropped the ball

Christ you know she’s so sleazy
She lies so effortlessly
But Levi is going,
To crucify Sarah P.

How did Mac choose Sarah to begin with?
She is just a political hack.
A dumb “hockey mom”,
That can’t think and chew gum.
Why didn’t he select “Joe Sixpack?”

Christ she makes us uneasy.
In Yiddish we say, “Oy Vey.”
We’d love to replace her
With our good friend, Tina Fey.
We’d love to replace her
With our good friend, Tina Fey.

Braindead libturd, it's only a matter of time before you losers are thrown out of office.

Love it when Palin is sworn in as POTUS--January, 2013. Save the date dummocrap.

Rick451| 1.10.10 @ 2:41AM

Petty? More like brilliant. You'll see.

Buster Brown| 1.10.10 @ 3:59AM

Don't worry, she's not going to the symposium now, either. It's been canceled. But don't worry all you Palin fans, your $770 refunds are on the way. Honest...No, really. Watch your mailboxes!

Lynnrockets | 1.10.10 @ 9:14AM

Is it any wonder that the Tea-Bagger bash has been canceled? Their "Die-in" in Washington was an attendance disaster and they cannot even define what their planned January 20th "strike" or "boycott" is supposed to be. The good news is now Sarah Palin will have lots of time to prepare for her paid speaking gig at the Bowlers Convention.

RIGHT WING WORLD (DON’T KNOW MUCH)
(sung to the Sam Cooke song “Wonderful World”)

Don’t know much about geography
Don’t know much ecology
Don’t know much about that climate change
Don’t know why voters think I am strange

But I do know I love my shoes
And I really love my beehive ‘do
What a right wing world this should be

Don’t have much of an education
I know a lot about procreation
Opposition should have no voice
Pregnant women should have no choice

Yes, I do practice “politics of hate”
And I love to equivocate
What a right wing world this should be

Now I don’t claim that I can see Russia
From my living room bay
And I do not star on “Thirty Rock”, baby
That’s the talented Tina Fey

Don’t know much about interviews
Don’t know many Supreme Court views
Can’t name any books that I’ve read
Sure glad Bristol and Levi aren’t wed

But I do know my time is due
And I’ll be there in 2-0-1-2
What a right wing world this will be

And I do know you’ll love Sarah P.
We’ll be a nation of Scientology
What a right wing world this will be

Mr Hillyer,
There was a time, before the blogosphere, that CPAC was critical to getting a message out to the base. That time is long gone. The Internet and its blogs have done a sterling job since. Perhaps, maybe, what if... Sarah Palin (and possibly others) see it as a grand waste of time where the risks outweigh the benefits?

Look, I watched most of last year's CPAC and found it to be a colossal WOT with respect to learning anything new. Limbaugh was the best there, I thought, but he offered his standard fare.

Petty? Get over yourself? What, instead, if she's just getting over CPAC? Is it a rebuff of Conservatives, or just a business decision?

PALIN FOR PRESIDENT!| 1.12.10 @ 11:37AM

GO SARAH!!

the405| 1.11.10 @ 12:20AM

NTPC is aligning itself with the birther movement by having Joesph Farah speak on Friday night.

Yet the NTPC is barring all press from covering that and Palin's speech.

Why is that?

Lynnrockets | 1.11.10 @ 8:05AM

Simple. Even the Tea-Baggers recognize that their positions are so outside of the political mainstream that they are embarrassed to have them see the light of day and/or to have them subjected to public ridicule.

On another note, it was a hoot to watch 60 Minutes last night as the Republicans continued to eat their young. It would appear that Steve Schmidt may have finally plunged the final stake into the blood-sucking thing that is Palin. She was portrayed by Schmidt as a knowledgeless, lying schizophrenic.

I’VE JUST SEEN HER FACE
(sung to the Beatles song “I’ve Just Seen A Face”)

I’ve just seen her face,
I can’t forget the time or place
I’ll make a bet, she’s trolling for a fee
Palin wants all the world to see her jet
Na na na na na na

Unemployed and without pay
She lives her life the Palin way
With winking eyes and beehive hair
She’s an Alaskan “Mama Bear” alright !
Na na na na na na

Falling, yes Sarah’s falling
And she’s appalling to sober men

Sitting on her throne
With her intelligence on loan
The G.O.P. thinks she is out of sight
Their other girls were never quite like this
Na na na na na na

Crawling, an insect crawling
And she’s appalling to sober men

(musical interlude)

Falling, yes Sarah’s falling
And she’s appalling to sober men

I’ve just seen her face
To folks like me it’s a disgrace
And better yet, I want the world to see
There is no place for Sarah P., you bet
Na na na na na na

Crawling, an insect crawling
And she’s appalling to sober men

Falling, yes Sarah’s falling
And she’s appalling to sober men

Oh, falling, yes Sarah’s falling
And she’s appalling to sober men

“Palin Family Feud”.
“Career In Jeopardy”,
“Neither Truth Nor Consequences” or
“Name That Magazine Or Newspaper”

IF that is what happened). If that is what happened -- and again, I do NOT know the circumstances, so there MAY be a legitimate explanation -- then unless Palin had a really good reason, she did effectively "diss" not just Keene but the conservative movement, in which case Keene would have been right to complain.

I have an idea: before you write an entire column trashing Palin for what you "suppose" are her reasons for everything, why don't you do what an honest journalist does and TALK TO HER!!! Good grief. Get over YOURSELF.

What is troubling about this thread is the amount of personal venom which is revealed and the seeming inability to agree upon what is factual versus merely expression of personal opinion.

Americans of all political persuasions can vigorously disagree about what policies should be adopted -- or rejected -- but why is it necessary to attack and vilify perceived opponents and claim that they have utterly no moral compass or integrity or honorable principles or decency or legitimate competing ideas?

I really don’t know. I think if I had a contract with LibLime I’d mind. That said there are a lot of reasons people stick with vendors. We didn’t go with LibLime in Vermont because they were way too expensive for what we needed and what we could afford. I don’t know if they’re like that for other people. If I was going with an Open Source vendor I think I’d really want them to maintain their PS committment throughout, yeah, but I can’t second guess other folks’ motivations.
