Under fire from C-SPAN callers who accused her of selling her
health care vote for
$100 million in aid to Louisiana, Sen. Mary Landrieu on
Tuesday made false claims about cost-cutting achieved by the
Senate health care bill.
Asked by a C-SPAN host, “Can you specifically tell our viewers
how this will lower health care costs?” Landrieu responded:
Well first of all, it’s going to lower the cost to our
government over time. Again we’re spending 16 percent of our
gross national product on health care. Japan, which is a
competitor, and they’re a much smaller country, but they are a
robust economic country in the world, they’re spending 8
percent of their GDP. Now, ours is projected to go up to 18
percent. So if we could taper this off, and stay at 16 percent,
or go down to 15 percent, over time, 14 percent. That may be
aggressive, but when we start bending that cost curve, the
government will save money, therefore every taxpayer will save
money.
She’s absolutely right that if we reduced the amount of money we
spend on health care, it would save the government money. The
problem is, the legislation she supports would do the exact
opposite.
The government agency that is tasked with keeping tabs on total
national health care expenditures — that is, the source of the
16 percent of GDP number — is the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services. Earlier this month, CMS analyzed the Senate
bill, and they found that if enacted, health care spending
would swell to 20.9 percent of GDP — higher than if we
simply did nothing.

She's a nit-wit. Who cares what she says. She belongs in the senate about as much as stupid Bobby Casey. He claims his "complicated plan" prevents taxpayer funding of abortion. He said so with a stright face on Greta last night. What a JERK!!
Oldefarte| 12.22.09 @ 3:54PM
Of course she lied----they all do! The only remedy for American taxpayers/voters is to begin MAKING A LIST AND CHECKING IT TWICE [as to which congressmen are up for reelection in 2010] so that we can send them all to the unemployment line!!!!!

That is one of the weakest responses I've ever heard/seen/read from a politician. She makes Caroline Kennedy look, you know, articulate.

Having lived in New Orleans, Landrieu would be perfect as a "Lady of the Evening" on Airline Blvd and the Rent-by-the-Hour motels along that road. Folks from NOLA will understand.

One reason the oft-cited comparison to Healthcare costs in Japan:
An except from an old post...
This leads us back to Japan versus the U.S. Using the per capita cost comparison between these two countries in not an accurate way to gauge the cost of the healthcare systems because the systems themselves are only part of the equation. Current statistics indicate that thirty percent of the U.S. population is obese, or almost one hundred million people. If one were to ask most doctors in the U.S. what is the largest contributor to our healthcare bill today they would say likely say obesity. Obesity is associated with heart disease, diabetes, cancer, brain tissue degredation, a host of orthopedic ailments, and so forth. Interestingly, some physicians will likely tell you that treating obesity and its associated diseases costs as much as forty percent of the total tab, or $2800 per person. Japan’s obesity rate, on the other hand, is three percent. It is logical to assume that Japan gains a significant advantage from a culture that somehow suppresses obesity in its population. If we took responsibility for our own health we might actually solve some of this problem.
If this supposition is true, the U.S. cost would still be double Japan’s even if we all lost weight. However, take out the tort bar, steep investment in the medical and pharmaceutical technology engine here, the affect of illegal drugs, the affect of fraud and abuse in both the government and private payer systems, and we might cut another twenty percent out. Or, we could spend another five hundred billion per year and claim we did ‘something’ to ‘fix’ the healthcare system other than burden our progeny with monstrous unpaid bills. For those on the left, we get to say ‘all for one and one for all’ and feel good that we are stamping out the capitalist monster. Oh, and get reelected.

Landrieu is nothing but a common criminal. She took a $300 Million bribe from Harry Reid. I really feel strongly she'll be out of a job when her term expires. Also, I guarantee with 100% certainty that the medicine man ben nelson will be gone to. william jefferson clinton a black congressman was imprisoned for 90 years for only taking a $500,000 bribe. Mary's bribe $300,000,000 and Ben Nelson Bribe $1,000,000,000. Talk about racism.
