Howard Dean went on MSNBC's "Countdown" last night to make the case for killing the health care bill, arguing that without a public option or Medicare expansion, it wasn't real reform, but merely pouring more money into the private insurance industry.

Asked if he would advise Senators to vote yes or no on the health care bill, Dean said, “No. Absolutely not. You can’t vote for a bill like this in good conscience. It costs too much money. It isn’t health care reform. It isn’t even insurance reform.”

Dean said if it were up to him, he'd "kill the bill entirely, and have the House start in reconciliation.”

He said that they should pass a smaller bill that creates the exchanges (without the expensive subsidies that would fund the purchase of private insurance) and has a few of the health and wellness reforms, but then come back in a few years and fight for what he considers real reform.

“This bill is more likely to make the crisis worse than it is better because it’s so expensive,” he said.

Howard did such great things for Vermont- you can only buy insurance from two companies now. If you try to get an issue resolved they basically tell you to eff off- they know you ain't going anywhere.

Other than he's Howard Dean and Republicans reflexively oppose anything he says, isn't this a great opportunity to promote bi-partisanship and AGREE WITH ALL OF THE ABOVE?!

How strange is it that Howard Dean, of all people, calls for the correct action of ditching this entire bill -- and because it's too expensive?

Eric Cartman| 12.16.09 @ 10:03AM

The broken watch speaks! (He's right twice a day - that was is two times: makes the crisis worse and it's too expensive)

I thought Dean was going to say not to vote for the bill because it doesn't have provisions to fund string of abortion mills he owns.

This nation needs single-payer national health insurance, not this corporate giveaway. In public, the Republicans like to call Obama a "socialist"; but in private, they know he's simply the Democratic version of themselves: a whore to corporations and Wall Street.

Sir| 12.16.09 @ 1:24PM

"This nation needs..."
"...corporate giveaway."
"...a whore to corporations and Wall Street."

A couple more talking points and that might have been impressive. Did you type all of that in one breath?

More importantly, do you understand one single, solitary iota of this country's economic system? The human nature and motivation which drive that system? The very real, predicatable, and documented result of any action other than feeding that motivation?

"This nation needs single-payer national health insurance..." like you need another hole in your tiny cranium.

Oh... wait.

The Beagle| 12.16.09 @ 4:20PM

"do you understand one single, solitary iota of this country's economic system?"

What "system" is that, Ma'am? A system which bankrupts families and individuals on a daily basis to pay insurance executives who will then deny them coverage? You mean that "system"?

Sir| 12.16.09 @ 4:24PM

Thank you for responding. I'll take that answer as a firm "No."

Sir| 12.16.09 @ 5:25PM

I apologize for making this a two-part response. The call I was waiting for came so I had to abbreviate my response to you.

What further I want to say to you is that I'm sorry if something's happened in your life that generates genuine bitterness toward those insurance executives. Seriously. Life stinks sometimes, and more for some than others.

You have to remember, however, The Beagle, that life's not fair (I know, I know...) and sometimes even in the BEST of systems somebody gets the shaft. I've been there myself, and if not for generous family I'd have been hung out to dry legally, faced bankruptcy, lost everything. Further, technically, I'm still insolvent, so let's hope that my job holds up. Still, after all of what's happened to me and my wonderful family, I wouldn't want any government to take over any segment of the "system"... for the simple fact that government has never once proved itself to be anything other than the wrong choice. Definitely economically, and almost every other occasion, too.

Everytime government makes a law, another freedom is lost. That goes for motorcycle helmet laws all the way to murder. You remember the good ol' days when there were no gun laws? Society was more polite, for sure, and those were the same days when people could leave their cars and homes unlocked without fear of loss.

I digress.

The "...system which bankrupts families and individuals on a daily basis to pay insurance executives..." is NOT what's bankrupting people. It's life, circumstances, crappy fate, and our long-ignored reliance on someone else to be prepared for OUR losses.

I'm sorry you feel so bitter toward what seems to be capitalism in general, but your bitterness needs to sublimate into the realization that nobody owes you anything and you had better get not only your financial affairs in order, but your spiritual affairs, as well.

In the mean time, read Hayek.

Who would have loved to see The Beagle's face when he/she/it (must be inclusive of people who don't know if they have a wiener or not) was typing his/hers/its little tirade?! Raise your hands!
