The Spectacle Blog

Philip Klein noted yesterday that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's attack on ObamaCare opponents came in the immediate aftermath of a poll showing a majority of Nevada voters oppose ObamaCare.

Smearing 53% of his own state's voters is the latest political blunder for Reid, whose re-election in 2010 is looking increasingly doubtful. Reid provided fodder for his leading GOP opponent:

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Danny Tarkanian -- a community activist with a history of working with at-risk African-Americans in Las Vegas -- called on Senator Harry Reid to apologize on the Senate floor for comparing his health care opponents to defenders of slavery.
"Harry Reid's comments comparing opponents of his health reforms to defenders of slavery are a disgrace to the institution of the Senate and an embarrassment to Nevada. If there is any dignity left in this man, he will apologize on the Senate Floor," said Tarkanian.
Danny Tarkanian has been personally active in Las Vegas' African-American community through the Tarkanian Basketball Academy which teaches young Las Vegans -- many of whom are African-American -- life lessons through sports.

Tarkanian -- a former UNLV point guard and son of legendary coach Jerry "Tark the Shark" Tarkanian -- is leading Reid in the polls. Tarkanian is only one of nine candidates seeking the Senate nomination in next June's Republican primary, but benefits from strong name recognition from his basketball career.

Another advantage: Tarkanian has Tea Party credentials, while his main rival for the nomination, former state GOP chairwoman Sue Lowden, has been called the "preferred candidate of the Republican party establishment" -- the kiss of death in a year when GOP primary voters are clearly in a populist mood.

Jerry Tarkanian's son?! One shouldn't rush to tar the son with the father's history, and one hopes the apple has fallen very far from the tree. If not, though, Harry Reid isn't the most reprehensible candidate in the Nevada race after all.

Harry's comments regarding his WELFARE-CARE legislation was not a disgrace---it is brainwashing propaganda from a domestic terrorists!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John,

Thank you for demonstrating the efficacy of the public education system.

I can't wait to see what results a public health system yields.

Snert| 12.9.09 @ 10:44PM

You're a f*cking retard.

The f*cktard democratic party resisted the end to slavery. It was the republican party that was formed in 1854 that espoused an end to slavery and was resisted by southern democrats.

It was the democratic party that fought against civil rights for blacks in the 1960s.

It is the democratic party that now wants to enslave a new generation with handouts and entitlements.

Pull your head out of your *ss and pick up a history book.

If you can't read it, ask somebody to read it to you.

Obama is the one who wants to enslave us all and the federal government will be holding the whip.

Nadine| 12.8.09 @ 1:08PM

John - since when is asking people to support themselves (note spelling) a crime? Government handouts, government takeovers, government "bailouts" are not the American way. The GOP is simply trying to stop Obama and band of merry socialists from destroying this great nation.

Harry Reid has so very much to apologize for - such as not listening to his constituents. He was elected into office to REPRESENT the people of Nevada - not to steamroll his socialist agenda over us.

Sen. Harry Reid just needs to apologize for being himself. For the most part I have not heard, or read, anything that justifies his occupancy of the majority leader office. His nickname "Dingy Harry" could not be more appropriate.

"Nadine| 12.8.09 @ 1:08PM - John - since when is asking people to support themselves (note spelling) a crime?"

Nadine, give it up. Liberals mothers never told them what our mothers did... that the world doesn't owe them a living.

In their twisted minds, we are "greedy" for wanting to keep the fruits of our own labor... and need to be forced to pay more taxes so they can live better while doing little to no work.

Jerry45| 12.9.09 @ 8:29AM

Goodbye, Harry. It will be fun listening to the Obami spin your loss. I mean, after all, you were the Senate Majority Leader. Buh-bye. Let the door hit you on the way out. Buh-bye, now. Maybe you and Creigh and Tom can go fishing somewhere. Buh-bye. Bye. Don't write! Don't call! Bye-bye.

be at the polls in 2010! vote out the democrats and rinos. this administration is at war with the american people. i don't understand it, however, we must fight back.

Bigfingo| 12.9.09 @ 9:22AM

I'm beginning to view this as the 'Obama Bomb'. People worry that he has too many objectives, I suggest he has just MIRV'd. Y'all can take it from there.

Peace out,

You can't buy this type attack material, Harry is his own worse enemy, & his foes cheer him onward.

Let's hear another one Harry! LOL

It's almost as much fun as listening to Joe "The Gaff-Master" Biden!

Jeff| 12.9.09 @ 10:33AM

I think Harry is off his rocker, actually. A comparison of opponents of health care with defenders of slavery is not only off the mark, but he is essentially trying to reinstitute the institution. Any time you engage in redistribution of wealth without regard to the targets earning it, under duress, you have slavery. Those who must give of their production to those who don't involuntarily are slaves, and those to whom it goes are the slave masters. When you have a large portion of the population who pay no taxes, they are receiving benefits they did not earn, and those who are required to pay the taxes will be punished if they don't. Slavery just looks different than it did 150 years ago. It is much softer, but slavery nonetheless.

I'm not sure just how the phrase "compassionate conservatism" came to be, since if government takes it by force under threat of fines and imprisonment, it certainly isn't compassion. And politicians giving other people's money away isn't compassion because they lose nothing, and give nothing of themselves.

It is one thing to accept charity and something else entirely to take from others against their will.

Bruce, NV| 12.9.09 @ 10:50AM

Danny Tarkanian is a fine man, and deserves to be our next Senator. I met him, along with Chuck Heath recently...If he's good enough for Sarah Palin's dad, mom and brother, he's good enough for Nevada (and he doesn't cary Sue Lowden's baggage).

njoriole| 12.9.09 @ 12:24PM

In addition to the outrageousness of his attack, Reid also shows a spectacular amount of historical ignorance and lack of self-awareness, even for a politician. Recall, for example, that the pro-slavery party in America was the Democrat party. Recall also that, when brave men were giving their all to end that odious practice (or,"peculiar institution,") it was the northern "Copperhead" Democrats who did everything they could to obstruct and defeat the war effort. (In that regard, Harry Reid achieved an eerie deja vu when he proclaimed the Iraq war "lost" just as it was about to be won, against all odds and efforts by him and his caucus.) As for the modern-era civil rights struggle? Who did everything they could to impede and obstruct justice being done then? Who "stood in the school door," to deny the most basic of human and civil rights to people of color? Who, in fact, were the senators who filibustered ALL of the civil rights legislation (even anti-lynching laws) up to and including the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Democrats, every one. On top of all that, which party has as its current "lion," the so-called "Conscience of the Senate," a man who was once a KKK official? Why, it's the Democrats, of course!

TulsaJack| 12.9.09 @ 11:06PM

Reid is a disgrace, a corrupt, lying, ignorant fool. All Democrats are his co-conspirators, allowing this odious dunce to reach the U.S. Senate's pinnacle of power from which he works tirelessly betraying our trust, eager to destroy our country and ruin our lives.

Reid is sick, and let's hope the good people of Nevada are finally sick of him. It's taken long enough.
