Mike Huckabee is out there attacking
his attackers. "“It really does show how sick our society has
become that people are more concerned about a campaign three
years from now than those grieving families in Washington." No,
Mr. Huckster, that's not it at all. The fact is that the time to
think about the grieving families in Washington would have been
IN ADVANCE, so they wouldn't be grieving. Gov. Huckster faced
PLENTY of opposition back home to his outrageous clemency
policies, and he was warned that violent criminals become
recidivists. In other words, he was warned that turning violent
offenders loose would create more victims, more grieving
families. But he thought he knew better. He thought he, the high
and mighty, could tell when a violent offender had "found God"
and that such a finding could override the duly enacted decisions
of judges and juries, based on duly enacted legislation. Well, he
was wrong -- and that is WHY there are now some grieving families
in Washington. Of course Huck is not directly responsible for the
cop killings; only Mr. Clemmons is. But Huck is responsible for
Mr. Clemmons being free. Yes, parole boards let Clemmons free --
but only AFTER Huck's clemencies made it possible for them to do
so. Without his commutation of Clemmons' sentence, my
understanding is that Clemmons would not have been even eleigbile
for parole until 2015.
(I must say, parenthetically, that the efforts of Sean Hannity
and others to defend the Huckster are disappointing. They would
NEVER have tried defending a lefty who made so many of the same
decisions that Huck did.)
Finally, Huck's last quote in the linked story was this: “People
are talking about this from a political standpoint, but what they
need to be asking is how did the system break down?” What a
pathetic weasel. No, "the system" didn't break down, Mr.
Governor. YOU intervened in the system and it was your
intervention that set in motion any other breakdowns that
occurred. This isn't political, it's moral. You, Mr. Huck, did
the wrong thing. You did it repeatedly, for numerous violent
offenders. And now you try to dodge your share of responsibility
for it.
" To Huck: See Rock; Then Crawl Under It -- Please"
May said rock be his political sepulcher.
Course he can still strum a guitar under there.

Has ANYTHING good ever come out of Arkansas government?
BamaDeb| 12.2.09 @ 1:35PM
There was always something about Mr. Huckabee that I did not
like. Never could put my finger on it. I think I know now!
Margie| 12.2.09 @ 1:56PM
What I don't understand is why you keep calling it a clemency
when it was not. It was a commutation of an over 100 yr. prison
sentence to a 40-something yr. sentence, commuted to 11 yrs.
served time. The kid was a 16 yr. old at the time. He wasn't in
for murder but at that time it was robbery (not armed), and
burglary.
I don't know about Huckabee's other sins in this area, but if
these are the real facts concerning this particular case, why are
you still calling it a clemency, etc.? Do you just not like the
man and that's why you're doing this?
~I also heard Hannity's show and he sure didn't seem to be
defending him.
~I am not pro-Huck either. He wouldn't have my vote for
nomination of Pres. because he's rather liberal. When I first
read all the blogs here the other day, the way they were written
condemning him about this particular case, I went with the
condemning. But then I got the facts. I'm into the truth. Let the
chips fall where they may.

900+ clemencies and commutations. Spoke at the Arkansas La Raza.
Supported illegal immigration and the ethnic transformation of
the country. Raised taxes. Big spender. Yankee accent. There's a
lot to dislike in Huckabee. Glad he's finished as a national
poltician.
This is eternal justice for the Rev. Mike. I am sorry, but the
man is a charlatan. He spent a whole presidential campaign
bashing Mitt Romney, impuning his religion in ways that should
have had him out of the presidential campaign. But, hey, the Rev.
Mike was Mormon-bashing. So it is OK, right?! So typical of this
guy. I never got the attraction to him. So he is a Christian, a
minister, and has an R after his name. Policy after policy he is
to the left of the national party. And on crime, well I think one
Rudy Guiliani could teach him a thing or two.
JP| 12.2.09 @ 2:38PM
“People are talking about this from a political standpoint, but
what they need to be asking is how did the system break down?”
And this man wishes to be President someday. Mr Clemmons became
political the very minute a politician (then Govenor Huckabee)
granted him clemency. Politics is applied morality, and Govenor
Huckabee wishes to be seen as a kind of moral vanguard. But, it
was his personal morality (the granting to a violent felon
clemency his freedom) that created this "tragedy".
To accuse people of only seeing the politics of the policemen's
murders is akin to accusing congressmen of playing politics when
writing laws.
Pat| 12.2.09 @ 3:00PM
Mr. Hillyer, Huckabee did not release a violent criminal. He
allowed someone to apply for parole after serving 11 years in
state prison on a ridiculous 108-year sentence for non-violent
property crimes committed when he was a minor. The judges in
Washington were the ones who knew he had a violent record and
released him. So either you are flailing the man for not having a
working crystal ball, or else you think 108 years without parole
is a reasonable sentence for a teenager's nonviolent theft
crimes.
Fine. Since I assume you are a defender of the Constitution,
equal protection, etc. , I would like to make a challenge you to
take a solemn oath that if one of your own precious snowflakes
ever does anything remotely illegal -- borrows a car without
permission, say, to go "joyriding" - that you will insist it be
prosecuted as grand theft and your child sentenced to 108 years
in prison with no hope of parole, on the off chance that many
years from now, he or she might get out and go on a killing
spree.
If you won't do that, then you are a hypocrite. If you will do
that, then you are a bonehead. Wish I could say that your writing
had given me a third option, but I can't think of one.

out raped (again) and killed?
Big Jim| 12.2.09 @ 4:27PM
Under the law robbery and burglary are violent crimes whether or
not a weapon is used. It seems, however, that under the facts of
this case, what Huck did was not unreasonable because the
punishment was unreasonable. The judges responsible for letting
the guy out on bail knowing his long criminal past should be the
focus of everyones anger. There are many reasons not to like
Huck, such as the screed about a sick society mentioned in the
article. I don't like him and would never support him, but I will
be fair to him.
Margie| 12.2.09 @ 5:12PM
Exactly. The Left employs the tactic of demonizing those they
don't like. It's not a matter of liking or not liking someone.
It's a matter of the facts, the truth. That should be served.
S.L. Toddard| 12.2.09 @ 5:52PM
Exactly! The right would never demonize a politician they didn't
like. And if you don't believe me, ask Barack Hussein Obama, the
Evil Kenyan Nazi-Stalinist Manchuriate Candidate/Crypto-Islamic
Terrorist Who Hates America And Wants To Take Our Freedoms. He
never got demonized at all.
Of course. That is why I oppose Obama based on his statist
policies instead of demonizing him as an Evil Kenyan

By reading about the criminal's record of violence and making a
personal observation of the man, a wise man can figure out
whether a criminal should stay behind bars or be set free. Mike
Huckabee, by playing up the redemptive side of his Christianity
without regard to the conservative ability to judge a man's
character, or lack thereof, sternly and objectively, decided to
play god. Huckabee did it so often that if his name was, say,
Bill Clinton, he would have been politically crucified by all
decent conservatives. No, Mike Huckabee made a fetish out of
turning loose violent criminals long before their time. He richly
deserves to suffer the political consequences.
John Allen| 12.2.09 @ 5:36PM
Huckabee's slime drenched defense of himself should not surprise
anyone. During his thankfully failed primary bid for the
Republican nomination Huckabee repeated a filthy evangelical slur
designed to imply that Mormons worship Lucifer (read: Satan) and
then claimed ignorance in the matter.
The problem being that he has spent his life surrounded by
evangelical ministers who repeat the same bile over and over
again. He knew exactly what he was implying in the New York
Times. When he was called on it he lied.
It is a well established pattern with him. But he comes from a
culture where it is ok to lie about other people if you are doing
it for your twisted version of God.
Mormonism is whacky enough on its own without the need to resort
to lies and distortions against it. The people Huckabee surrounds
himself with, however, find that it is ok to lie if the lie is
more effective than the truth.
