Of course Pierce, God rest his soul, was usually too liquored up to think about squandering taxpayer money. But you are correct that we would be far better off with a President that's blotto half the time than we are with the Won. If nothing else, it would sure make the State of the Union addresses more entertaining.

If Pierce was liquored up, and saved the country sort of like General US Grant ran a war, then find out what brand he was drinking and give it to all our "leaders" today, as we play Lincoln trying to save the Union.

The liquor comments remind me of Lincoln's asking what type of liquor Grant drank and to give it to the rest of his Generals.

I read a fine book review in today's Wall Street Journal. Calvin Coolidge's autobiography. Just think, he was the president from the same state that brought forth Ben and Jerrey's and Howard Dean.

Actually, CJ, Ben and Jerry and Howard all come from NYC, and only came to Vt. as adults.

For a good understanding of the 20's and 30's, read Coolidge - An American Enigma, by Robert Sobel and then
The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal, by Robert P. Murphy.
Ronald Reagan was a big fan of Coolidge, who presided over one of the most prosperous periods in American history.
The Politically Incorrect Guide shows very clearly how Hoover and FDR combined to wreck our economy, much the same as George W. Bush and BHO. The left likes to portray Hoover as a conservative, but he definitely wasn't.

R. Dittmar| 11.25.09 @ 10:04PM

The thing about Coolidge that's always stuck in my mind is the fact that he used to refer to Hoover as "Wonderboy". Is there any more appropriate (or appropriately derisive) nickname for the current man-child that occupies the Oval Office?
