Jeffrey Goldberg notices that his Atlantic Monthly colleagues are in See-No-Evil mode. A few thoughts on why this is so:
The nature of elite reaction is not strictly a matter of the potential political ramifications of events. There is also the matter of complexity and nuance, which are specialties of the intelligentsia. When events seem to teach a simplistic liberal lesson, there is no need to seek out any mitigating factors. Yet when the simple lesson would seem to favor a conservative argument, there is a frantic search for mitigation, or else the event is dismissed as meaningless.
The murder of Matthew Shepard was interpreted as evidence of mass homophobia induced by Christian conservatism, even though the murderers were a couple of two-bit hoodlums with no known ties to the Religious Right. Yet here we have Nidal Malik Hasan reportedly screaming "Allahu Akbar" while gunning down U.S. troops and . . . well, this means nothing.
You can read the whole thing. But obey President Obama and don't "jump to conclusions," or else you'll forfeit any hope of ever belonging to the elite.

Control the myths the population believes in and you can control the population to your economic and political benefit. So why is it surprising the Liberal Media Elite generates a fog of lies and deceit.
JP| 11.8.09 @ 1:11PM
I wonder when some reporter will ask the Homeland Secuirty Director if Major Nidal Hasan was a)a tea-bagger, or b) a reutning Vet. It seems our elites (who BTW are charged with protecting us) haven't a clue on how to do it. They would gladly allow all sorts of Islamic Fascists into our military, and would be happier going after plumbers, housewives, and retired Wal-Mart employees. This is what $40 billion in security spending gets you. The terrorists only have to be successfull every so often; and they do not have to be part of any group or take thier orders from some foreign source. For the Ft Hood muderer, all he needed was the Koran and the will.
Dark times ahead.

Mr. McCain,
Your thinly disguised dislike for conservative Christians by trying to paint them in a derogatory light by equating them as "part of the Religious Right" wasn't missed by me.
Just what is the Religious Right to you?

I was in a hurry to get the link in here and did not read your post.
Chill out, OK? I'm very proud to be described as part of the "religious right"...as opposed to the "scumbag left", myself.
Heck, the term "Christian" was hurled as an insult for two hundred years. "little christs" was the literal translation.
Margie| 11.8.09 @ 6:52PM
Ken.
When the Left refers to us as being part of the Vast Right Wing they mean it in a derogatory way. We laugh and say yep. We know how they mean it though, don't we?
If Mr. McCain doesn't mean it that way let him say so.

The best moniker for the DPPM opposition might well be " common sense conservative ". The winners last Tuesday used it to describe themselves many times. I do not jump to conclusions these days, but it is hard to see this killer as nothing less than a soldier of the Jihad. By the way, the local blues states t.v. in southern New England is painting Hasan as a troubled, bullied victim. Their audience is primarily minorities, old fart women, and educated liberals. So, there it is-the battle at hand.

McCain --
This is really cheap, trashy stuff.
Everyone I know -- mostly people you would consider "liberal," and mostly educated, thoughtful types -- are horrified and grief stricken by these murders at Ft. Hood.
You people who pretend you're the "real Americans," you are the ones who really feel genuine pain, while those phonies on the coasts sit back with their white wine and think of different ways to destroy their country: you people, are totally in the dark.
You talk about your love of this country, but you don't know anything about it; you're fearful, impotent, stupid, and completely without any insight into how others think or feel.
It's disgusting. You really don't know anything. Why did you become a writer in the first place? You don't have any insight, wisdom, or knowledge to convey. You have no unique understanding of people. You're not interesting. You just write to smear people you don't even know? What a fucking jerk you are, McCain. Screw you, brother.

The best moments in reading blogs are when liberals go nuts.
There is no denying the media elites and the president himself are in full denial mode about this shooting. Elite media has gone so far as to invent a new diagnosis for this creep's behavior. Using the elite media's logic that Nidal went nuts because he was treating soldiers with PTSD then by default all EMTs, firemen, cops, and emergency room doctors are only one breath away from screaming Allahu Ahkbar and shooting everyone in site. There is no denying that the elite media finds the most obscure connection to blame any other lone wolf killer for right wing ideology. The elites are putting more effort to isolate Nidal Hasan from responsibility from his actions because he is a Muslim.
Truth to Power| 11.8.09 @ 8:31PM
Nice follow up Stan. The LR is a little testy because he has an allergic reaction to the truth. His first reaction to the massacre was an illustration of the mental gymnastics of the left. He compares these murders to a suicide. BTW if we were in his vicinity it would be good to go armed. He appears to off his meds.
victor| 11.8.09 @ 10:56PM
Even libertarians sucha s Dylan Ratigan are denying, fast and furiously, that Hasan was anything but a terrorist.
He spoke on WABC 770 AM at length that Hasan was a digruntled employee in the vein of postal workers that snap because of intolerable working conditions. anybody that called in and said that he was a terrorist and that islam had something to do with it, they were dismissed quickly and he went back to "going postal". When it was pointed out that Hasan gave away peronal possessions the day before, it was also dismissed.
But "christians" who committed crimes were treated seriously.
Anything but the Truth.

My problem is that someone claiming to be an actual WRITER, a published, writer, could be so fatuous, so obtuse, so utterly without regard or curiosity or sense.

What is your opinion LR. Give us your take. Nobody questions your grief for the fallen, but tell why did this happen ? Why are grief stricken liberals seeing things one way and people here another ? You know LR if this had happened under Bush your educated thoughtful pals would be working on crazy rationale to blame it all on Bush. After all the the Obama FBI had six months to nail the killer, did some lack of urgency, some ignoring of facts by the Obama team filter down and cause us to miss clues and connect dots ? This is more or less what you did in the effort to blame Bush for 9-11. You people are the ones who used gutter tactics to smear in national defense matters, and it goes way back. Spare me your hideous sanctimony and phony anger.
Liberal Reader| 11.8.09 @ 10:27PM
Mr Reality --
I don't know what you're talking about. Most of my friends are liberals; all of them are appalled by this crime; none of them harbor feelings of sympathy for the shooter.
And by the way, none of them blame Bush for 9.11. None of them. I don't know what website you got that notion from, but it's just not true.
This is what I mean. You people SAY you love this country, but you only love this tiny, narrow part of it. And you don't KNOW much about it. You don't seem to KNOW much about the military even.
Maybe you served; maybe others around here did. But when it comes down to it, many of the people who post here don't seem to realize how important to our mission abroad Muslim soldiers, marines, and intelligence agents are.
These people sacrifice their life and limb, years of their lives, just like Christians and any other group in the military does. It is sick, it is fucking REPELLENT to read the nasty comments about Muslims here. It's completely un-American.
Did you all think there was a major problem with white Christians after the Columbine shooting? Should the Son of Sam murders have provoked pogroms?
It's absolutely outrageous, it's RACIST, and it's irrational to blame people of this man's religion for what he did.
Why did this guy shoot these people? I have no IDEA. And neither do you. People, every once in a while, come along who are just BAD.
You're a grown man; by now, you should understand that there are just mysteries in life. How the hell should I know why this man did what he did, you jackass.
It doesn't fall to me to explain it. But I'm also not weak and fearful enough to fly into a xenophobic fury over the issue. Jesus Christ, folks. You need to get with it. And stop reading this hack chump, McCain -- he's just a waste of time.
victor| 11.8.09 @ 11:07PM
The columbine killers did not walk around saying "Praise be to Jesus", but they did shoot a number of Christians, simply for being Christians.
You are really reaching and trying to justify this mass murderer and his horrific crime
Islam teaches that infidels must be dealt with harshly and swiftly.
I can see where you sympathies lie, after all you have the same attitude towards Christians that he does.
Taking Jesus' name in vain won't get you too far.
Bet you'd never take the prophet's name in vain, would you? allahdammit.
PS before you get your knickers in a twist, as th eBrits would say, allah was a pagan moon idol.
Liberal Reader| 11.8.09 @ 10:43PM
Let me make this simpler for you.
I live in a famously liberal college town; I'm surrounded by pinkos and socialists everywhere I go. Everyone is liberal here; they're leftists, to the last man.
As I was having my morning latte and eating my brie and arugula breakfast this morning, and reading my New York Times, at a local Starbucks, three men came in wearing military BDUs.
They were MOBBED by people offering condolences and thanks -- whatever they could. Our community lost someone in the shooting, true, and it seems like everyone has at least a friend of a friend who is stationed at Ft. Hood. The reaction here, at any rate, in my little People's Republic, has been profound. And it has nothing to do with politics, or any of the horse shit McCain writes above.
You people don't OWN a feeling of moral solidarity with our troops. Men who fight in Iraq and Afghanistan come from all over the country -- and they're not all white protestants. When I was in the Army, 50% of NCOs were black: do you think they went home on leave and discussed the glories of capital gains tax cuts with their Republican families?
Like I said. You people like to SAY how much you love the country; but, you haven't taken any trouble to LEARN much about it.
Nick| 11.9.09 @ 12:11AM
Marxist Reader,
Take your lithium, stat! You've turned into that fouled-mouth Mr. Hyde again.
And, yes, we do OWN the feeling of moral solidarity with our troops. Would you like to know why?
Because we weren't the ones spitting on them and calling them "baby killers" when they came back from Viet Nam. It was your fellow liberals who did. And those of us who are too young to have committed such vile acts, don't excuse the liberals who did.
You were in the Army, huh? When? Which units were you in?
Liberal Reader| 11.9.09 @ 10:01AM
Fuck you, Nick.
I don't have to prove anything to you.
People who post on this site are for the most part irrational, hate-filled, fearful, impotent hicks.
You hate Muslims, blacks, gay people -- anyone you think is different.
Your basically fascist instincts marginalize you in a free society; so, you become irate, paranoid, angry, suspicious assholes.

I'm as happy a person as you'll ever meet. I listen to Pope John Paul II's motto: "Be Not Afraid."

Please, get back on your meds. You used to be somewhat sane.
Now, when were you in the Army again? Which units?

So LR nobody liberal, nobody on the left accused Bush of screwing up pre 911, and going all out to save Clinton and his legacy. Richard Clarke anyone ? Not connecting dots ? What did Condi Know and when did she know it ? The lame hearings with Gorelick performing big time CYA ? Are you on drugs ? This is less than one per cent of the crap you idiots spread across the land to poison minds. You seem angry. Good. We are angry too. Not because you dislike soldiers or do not grieve-quit dodging the subject. Who was this killer ? Why did he do it ? C'mon answer the question and quit spewing venom on the questioners. But you are a head in the sand lefty nutjob and you can't handle the truth. In the end your alllollipops and roses lefty dopes when depicting our real enemies. To you the enemey is a Christian, a conservative, and no nonsense stand up Americans who cut through all the bullshit and see things for what they. This killer was a soldier in the Jihad and the national defense and homeland security policies of Bill Clinton, Gore, Reno, Albright, Obama, Biden, Peolosi, Reid, Big Sis, Holder, et al will not keep us safe. Cheney warned the nation and this current administration of the reality we face. Instead of listening your ilk attacked him yet again. Obama wanna save his ass he better fire big sis and beg Dick Cheney to take over homeland security. Run that proposition to the American people in a real poll and see what ya get. Tell your asshole coffee shop pals to start showing Dick Cheney some respect.
