Today in the Politico, I make the case that the ineffectual Democratic supermajority proves conservatives were right to choose loyalty to ideas over party loyalty in New York's 23rd congressional district. Yes, you need a big tent with some diversity of opinion to assemble a majority. But if your tent is too big to govern or implement your agenda, your majority is meaningless.

Party Trumps Person. The American system is currently a two-party system. Neither is perfect. Choose one based on its philosophy, platform and agenda that is closest to your ideology. Support it and vote it.

You cannot judge the "real" mindset of any individual. Guess, yes; know, doubtful.

Culling of candidates should be rendered during the primary process not in the final election.

Voting party line is essential for a majority power and control which can allow the fulfillment of the party agenda.

Excellent post. You are absolutely correct. We do have a 2 Party system. There is no perfection to be found in any Party or in any person. It is silly and immature to believe otherwise. Utopia exists only in Heaven. The Republican Party is best reflects the values of conservatives who want limited government, Low taxes, a strong Military, and Pro life.
Third Parties have only ever served to divide and not to help, and have never amounted to anything. But that is exactly the hope of those who know better who push for Third Parties. Their sole purpose IS to divide. Not to UNITE.

"Party Trumps Person. The American system is currently a two-party system. Neither is perfect. Choose one based on its philosophy, platform and agenda that is closest to your ideology. Support it and vote it."

This is precisely the mindset that brought us the disastrous presidency of George W. Bush, which helped to discredit conservatism across the country, and which led to the Democrat tidal wave beneath which we now flounder.

Put it another way: anyone who believes Party trumps Principle is an agent of the former with none of the latter.

"Put it another way: anyone who believes Party trumps Principle is an agent of the former with none of the latter."
Of course Toddard would say that, because he despises the Republican Party. Right Toddard?
Which Party line does Toddard vote for?

Mr. Toddard:
Thank you so much for my new Tea Party Lawn sign:

Seems the "great awakening" is occuring among the conservative movement. Principal is starting to trump party loyalty, as evidenced in NY-23. No longer are we pawns of the big tent, big government republicans. We can thank George W for opening our eyes to what happens when party trumps all. Tea, anyone?

Margie| 11.6.09 @ 2:45PM

Doug Hoffman is a life long Republican. That's right folks, Republican.
There was no Primary. It was a special election in NY-23. If the Party bosses hadn't chosen Scuzzo and there were a Primary, the voters would have had the opportunity to nominate him.
The Republican Party's base are conservative. They will get to nominate Mr. Hoffman in 2010.

Pete2| 11.6.09 @ 4:03PM

True, but republicanism nationally has been hijacked by the neo-cons and liberal wings. While Hoffman is a true republican and would have won in the primary ( though that was not really a given), it's the liberals who call the shots in the backroom. Remember, Scozzafloozy represented that area in the State Assembly for 10 years. I should also remind some that Chris Ortloff, another true blue Republican from that neck of the woods, is serving time now for child sex. It's principals, people, not party that counts.

Margie| 11.6.09 @ 4:17PM

Yes Peter2,
I know. But my above post @ 2:56pm still holds true.

Pete2| 11.6.09 @ 5:41PM

2 rights never made a wrong so we're both true blue. I understand that district will probably be folded into into another after reapportionment. Whatever the case, it was a valuable trainng ground for the new comers to politics. ( and they almost pulled it off).
