Covering the Doug
Hoffman congressional campaign on a day when the big
news is that Republican nominee
Dede Scozzafava quit. Former New York Gov. George Pataki
appeared today with Hoffman at VFW Post 125 in Plattsburgh,
where they were greeted by about 150 supporters and a huge media
contingent:

Pataki and Hoffman meet the press after their speeches.
Plattsburgh Mayor Donald
Kasprzak is interviewed by Suzanne Moore of the New York
Times.
Meanwhile, I met with a
volunteer at the Plattsburgh office and did a
video interview with a Hoffman campaign worker. Trust me when
I say that trying to cover this campaign on the scene is like
reporting a hurricane from the eye of the storm.

Mr. McCain,
Thank you for your coverage of this race. Without you, and bloggers, this never would have gotten the coverage it did.
Which means Sarah Palin might not have heard about it.
And with one Facebook post --BAM -- whole new race!
How's that for Hope-N-Change!

My daughter has taken the ferry across the lake from Vermont for the weekend to work this campaign. The young people are getting fired up about this campaign also. This is her first time working in such a campaign and she is part of history in the making.

“This makes life more complicated from the standpoint of this: If we get into a cycle where every time one side loses, they run a third-party candidate, we’ll make Pelosi speaker for life and guarantee Obama’s re-election,” said Mr. Gingrich, who had endorsed Ms. Scozzafava.

Yeah, Newt hasn't made a misstep yet, has he?
Richard Baker| 11.1.09 @ 10:28AM
Mike:
Newt has done himself in as a spokesman with NY-23. He's just another, as Bill O'Reilly would say, bloviator.
Mike| 11.1.09 @ 2:42PM
Richard,
As long as Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Michelle Bachmann, Michelle Malkin et. al. are the face of the right and the GOP, the left and the Democrats are cheering.
Nick| 11.1.09 @ 3:06PM
Mike,
So, Dede Scozzafava and Creigh Deeds are cheering, huh?
Jim Treacher | 11.2.09 @ 2:50AM
I guess "screeching with rage" = "cheering."

Just so the air is nice and clear...
Scozzafava has just endorsed the Democrat - Owens. (WND... Drudge... for references).
Which shows:
1. She was NEVER a Republican. She served her burn notice in the last few hours. My guess is the woman couldn't have found the Republican line on a New York State ballot. (not an easy task... if any of you have ever seen a New York State Ballot...)
2. She and her handlers have blundered big time. It would have been wiser for her to keep her mouth shut, and change parties to run as a Dem in 2010, after Hoffman won the election narrowly.
3. In the land of Thomas Dewey and Nelson Rochefeller, the Conservative Party is not a "party" in the strictist sense fo the word. It is a FACTION, ballot line. The oddity of New York Politics is not understood well by those who think that they can form a successful 3rd party to oppose BOTH the GOP and the Democrat Party.
What they will get is a permanent Democrat Majority.
We got lucky on this one. The GOP leadership finally woke up, almost too late, to see that they were being played for suckers.
Now that Scozzafava has thrown off the disquise, do you think that anyone in the GOP leadership, and especially the RNCC (Congressional Committee) will have the stones to demand their money be returned?
I doubt it. But ultimately the right thing has occurred.
Hoffman will probably win, and he will win again in 2010.
Perhaps he will send a signal to the Lead Headed spineless wimps at the RNC and the Republican Senatorial and Congressional Campaigns...
THERE IS NO MIDDLE... The "moderate Republcians - aka damnYankees" ARE the MIDDLE. The independents that you need to vote for you are on your RIGHT... They are the Socons, the Pro-gunnies, the border-controllers, the Pro-lifers... the God, Guns, and Babies crowd. So quit trying to fish for Democrat votes... they won't bite, but they WILL steal the bait.
Go Hoffman!!!!... GO Christie in Joisey!!!

Mike, when are you going to realize that it's people like you as the reason why the republican party has become a minority one. Scozzafava is nothing more than a democrat in GOP clothing, as shown by her endorsemnet of Owens...you know something? She can endorse who she wants because no one is listening. Do you think her 20% is going for Owens? Hardly. You can join Newt in the ranks of the irrevelant.

Pete,
People like me are the reason why the republican party has become a minority one.? Okay. You make as much sense as most other wingnuts. Nevertheless, I wish I could claim credit for the GOP becoming a minority party. Alas, I cannot. That honor goes to the central command of the GOP - Limbaugh, Beck et. al.
Nick| 11.2.09 @ 12:38AM
Are Scozzafava and Deeds still cheering, Mike?
How about Corzine?
ATLmedia| 11.1.09 @ 10:36PM
Oddly, some here thought I was wrong last week when I said this race is a win-win for the Democrats.
The far RT is unaware that US elections require a plurality or ,50% of the vote +1 to win.
Keep putting Palin Platitude spouting "Real" conservatives in the race & see how many elections you can win here. Hint- it works in Parlimentary systems-you know the Europeans y'all hate so much, over there, you'd have a shot at holding office...think about it ;-]
Nick| 11.1.09 @ 11:49PM
50% + 1 of all votes is a MAJORITY, Einstein!
A plurality is the most votes received under 50% between 3 or more candidates.
In some states, a plurality is not enough to win. The top two vote recipients compete in a run-off election.
But you'll learn all this when you finally reach the 8th grade, ALTmedia.
Colleen Barry| 11.1.09 @ 10:58PM
Doug Hoffman is the only conservative in the race. He shares my families and the district’s values.
