This looks like a classic uphill fight between the kind of candidate we conservatives (I prefer to call myself an 18th Century Liberal) dream about, and a chance to slap the established political parties in the face and get their attention.
Its time to put our dreams into action - Keep beating the drum, RS McCain, and lets all dig down and send Mr. Hoffman a check, and while you are at it, go to "The Other McCain" blog and hit the tip jar and keep my favorite blogger here in smokes and single malt so he can continue to do the Lord's work.

Isn't it ironic that these conservatives will back a 3rd party candidacy if it's a Conservative Party candidate running, but balk at backing 3rd party candidacies if its on the more credible Libertarian Party ticket.
A little hypocrisy perhaps?

i hate to say it but the only thing credible about a libertarian candidate is that they are sure to lose.

Eric: This race is a very special case. First of all, the Conservative Party is well established and influential in NY. Second, Hoffman went over to the Conservative Party only after the GOP dropped the ball by backing a candidate who is more liberal than the Democrat challenger. Third, there's no irony or hypocrisy in backing a third party candidate who holds your values and will caucus with your party.

Eric,
RightKlik has a point about the hostile environment for conservatives and libertarians in New York's RINO zoo.
I temporarily joined Manhattan's Upper West Side Republican Club... They had quite a following, but I found there was but *one* conservative-libertarian in the mix. Chock full of liberals being "out-lefted" by the growing radical elements in our local Democrat machines. Fans of Bloomie.
As an NRA member, I was clearly wasting my time amongst the RINOs. The other conservatives I knew had quit their memberships and declared as Conservatives. (Hell, we eventually quit New York City.)

I'm really baffled by the crowning of Scozzafava by the GOP establishment. Maybe they didn't want someone as conservative as Hoffman, but did they have to choose someone who effectively is a liberal Democrat with an R (for the moment) by her name? We are in an environment where Pat Toomey is running even in the polls with Arlen Specter in PA, when he was being written off earlier this year as dead in the water. In other words, this is an environment when we don't have to run RINOs to win in the northeast. Why is the GOP establishment so dense? How on earth did they come to choose this very liberal woman as their candidate? As for Newt Gingrich, this really should be the final flush for him.
