The Spectacle Blog

Well, if you’ve been following this story since my Wednesday report on Doug Hoffman, you know that the 3-way congressional special election in update New York’s 23rd District has quickly become perhaps the biggest political story of the year.

“It’s popping today,” one highly placed source close to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman told me in a brief phone interview. The campaign is “thrilled” by the latest poll that shows Hoffman “surging.”

Despite little attention from the major media, Hoffman caught fire this week, and GOP Establishment-backed candidate Dede Scozzafava is melting like the Wicked RINO Witch — there’s even a suggestion she might switch parties.

Now the Hoffman campaign is reportedly preparing a major new ad rollout and it is rumored — just a rumor at this point — that FreedomWorks honcho Dick Armey may be coming to upstate New York next week to campaign for the Conservative candidate.

One little humorous item I got exclusively: Republican strategist Jeri Thompson (whose husband Fred has endorsed Hoffman) had been scheduled to appear today on the Neal Cavuto’s Fox News show to discuss the race but got bumped in favor of “Balloon Boy” coverage!

Something else: In Wednesday’s conference call, Hoffman said his campaign was very eager to get Glenn Beck’s attention. I didn’t report that earlier — it seemed kind of a minor point — but the Conservative candidate has the backing of at least one Fox News superstar: Michelle Malkin is definitely a Hoffman fan.

And what about the blatant hypocrisy of Conservatives? In 2006, Tom DeLay unexpectedly resigned his seat, which left the Republicans without a candidate on the ballot.

The Libertarian Party had a fine candidate in Bob Smither, a conservative local crime fighter hero, who pledged to "Caucus with Republicans," if elected.

Despite enormous pleas and begging from local libertarian Republicans, the Houston/Ft. Bend County GOPs decided to run a ridiculous write-in campaign for Shelly Sekula-Gibbs.

Of course, it was predictable. Democrat Nick Lampson clobbered her. Smither still ended up getting 6%. He could've won, if it were not for the stubborness of Conservatives locally AND nationally (numerous appeals were made to Erick Erickson and RedState to no avail.)

And now the Conservatives want moderate and libertarian Republicans to back their 3rd party Conservative candidate?

I'd probably otherwise support Hoffman over Scazzofava were it not for the hypocrisy on 3rd parties by Conservatives - okay to back a Conservative, but not a Libertarian.

Wake up, it is no longer 2006, in case you haven't noticed we have a different situation in Washington and your 'tit for tat' is rather elementary.

Live and learn, Eric, and let bygones be bygones. The GOP has had to learn some hard lessons in the past three years. Right now, grassroots libertarians and conservatives are working together pretty good -- lots of Paulistas and LP types at 9/12 rally in DC -- and bitter recriminations can only hurt that effort.

If you want an apology from Erick Erickson, ask him for one. I'm just too busy to worry about that stuff.

Hoffman should hook up with Ron Paul via Dick Armey. The Ron Paul army is very good at getting attention. Couple them with somebody who is good at getting votes, and Hoffman could seriously benefit. If he's a hawk though, that won't fly.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I look forward to the day when congress is only 20% communist 20% socialist and 60% everything socialists and communists hate - between now and then libertarians, conservatives, neocons, Ron Paul folks, and Regan Republicans need to work as a team to put the right people in offce so every day of our lives is not spent watching and working to prenvent the next goverment take-over - so far the dems have taken the cities, the auto industry, the courts, the NFL, higher indoctrination (education)

Eric - there are F****** bigger issues here than your hurt feelings - Do you want the goverment in your business or not? I'm not king or emp0rer - I'm helping the McDonnell campaign and VA legislative races - I don't agree with all the candidates on all the positions - some want more taxes from me - but they're not advocating baby killing, some want more regulations - but they're not talking about shutting down coal - I could go on -

Simply put - MAN UP!!

…They managed to send a senator to Washington in the ’70s. Things are working out nicely for Hoffman. He has been endorsed by the Club for Growth, a tremendous asset in any election, and is surging in the polls. The presence of a third-party candidate in a race for one of the 400-plus seats in the House is "the biggest political story of the year"?

Even for someone who's blatantly campaigning for Hoffman, as you are, this degree of spin is ludicrous.

Conservative, NOT Libertarian| 10.17.09 @ 8:34PM

Sorry Eric, but I don't have a problem with that. I am a conservative, not a libertarian and want a conservative, not libertarian, candidate representing us in the 23rd.

The Libertarian Guy | 10.18.09 @ 12:05AM

What the GOP did to Bob Smither, was to cut their own throat - handing over a seat to a Democrat - instead of swallowing their pride.

I voted for Ron Paul in the primary, but I'll be damned if I vote for another Republican OR Democrat, ever again. If more people took that plunge of faith - firing ALL incumbents AND refusing to vote Brand X RepubliCrats in to replace the outgoing criminals - America might have a chance.

re DeLay: NY isn't TX. NY has a Conservative Party with a ballot line, as well as a Liberal Party with a ballot line. NY permits cross endorsed candidates; most states do not. Republcans running statewide don't stand a chance without also being on the Conservative line. Democrats stand less of a chance without a Liberal endorsement, but overall in NY there are far more Democrats registered than Republicans.

In non-statewide races, sometimes minor party endorsement matters, sometimes it doesn't.

The last third party candidate (and only one I can think of) to win statweide in a three way race was James Buckley for a Senate Seat, on the Conservative line. Non-statewide, I don't have any knowledge of.

Hoffman has a chance in a 3 way race. Usually, the third party candidate does not. As currently split, the democrat wins, while the Republican and Conservative take more than 60% of the vote between them. If the Republican establishment decides they made a mistake, and start backing Hoffman, he'll win. The winner in this district will not get more than 50% of the vote, no matter who it is.

If NY Repubs have any sense, they won't pull the same crap they did by not backing Bob Smither.

Then again, we'd be better off if both major parties withered on the vine... but that's another topic.

levotb| 10.31.09 @ 5:33PM

Malkin is a fool to endorse a RINO which shows just how desperate some conservatives are to vote in "anyone but a Libtard". The "anyone but" crowd just don't get it: Doug Hoffman is no conservative! He may be "conservative" on a few issues, but have any of you visited his website and looked for his positions on issues other than taxes (an easy place for faux conservatives to hide) and Obamacare? Nearly everyone opposes higher taxes and Obamacare except those looking for a handout. But where on his website are his positions on the hot button, serious issues that drive conservatives--the NAU, our loss of freedoms from the Patriot Act, Clinton's and Bush's EOs, Bush's signing of the MCA and NDAA and especially the NSPD 51 and now Obama's OEs and of course, that stalwart issue RINOs shy away from, illegal immigration? Nothing, nada. True conservatives see Hoffman for what he is--an empty suit and at best, a milquetoast conservative. Any "conservative" who runs with wussie RINO Pataki's endorsement is no conservative! Desperation by Republicans produces more of the same--anyone but the Libtard. What the GOP and candidates like Hoffman still don't get is "why" so many conservatives left the Party in 1996 and since that time. Besides, I'm leery of anyone getting the endorsement of Mrs. Pro-Amnesty, Sarah Palin.

levotb| 10.31.09 @ 6:53PM

Looks like I was prescient about Hoffman being weak on illegal immigration, but first, I was mistaken that he had "nada" in terms of a position on illegal immigration. I was looking at another site of his campaign's. But while he does say SOMETHING about illegal immigration, it's boilerplate, it sounds a lot like GW Bush and it surely doesn't sound "conservative" at all. In fact, it sounds like he's dodging the issue. By saying "The answer is not to put up a wall..." is a phoney argument. The Fence Act IS THE LAW!! It is NOT a "wall", but only 35 miles of thedouble fenced 750 miles required in the law have been built. I wonder if Hoffman knows this or cares.

Q. Where do you stand on illegal immigration?

Hoffman: "There is no question that our immigration policies are flawed. The answer, though, is not to put up a wall and stop all immigration. The answer is to create an easier path for immigrants to enter the United States - and to work here - while at the same time getting tough on illegal immigrants who commit crimes."

This was sent to me by researcher extraordinaire, Hanen at Sentinel Radio. The link come from 24ahead.com...

An interesting Comment from that blog on Hoffman and illegal immgration:

"Good luck getting any kind of answer from Hoffman. He doesn't like to commit. That and his word are no good, already. He was actually FOR Dede Scozzafava before he was against her. Notice, he pledged a moral oath before GOP officials to support her. He raised his right hand, looked them in the eye and said, "I promise." Later, Hoffman emailed Scozzafava to congratulate her on her win and promised to support her. Two days later, he was pimping himself out to the highest bidder (in this case, The Conservative Party)."

Does THIS sound like a conservative with high moral principles?
