Nobel Obama

President Obama joins Al Gore and Yasser Arafat as a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. I don't really know what else to say.

What a joke! The man hasn't accomplished anything yet.

Arby J Brown| 10.9.09 @ 2:35PM

The collective whine from the radical Right Wing is falling on deaf ears. The American people tuned them out a long time ago. It's a great day for America.

Tim| 10.9.09 @ 8:36AM

What a great honor for him and the United States of America!

Tim| 10.9.09 @ 8:36AM

Actually it's his Sally Field moment.

Dean| 10.9.09 @ 8:42AM

The last three American winners are: Jimmy Carter ("It's Israel's fault"), Al Gore ("Oh, wait. It's now climate change") and President Obama ("don't send troops, send troops, don't send troops").

The Nobel Peace Prize with these and other recent choices has really made itself irrelevant. This wasn't a Peace Prize, it was a "Speech Prize."

He has accomplished something: bankrupted the country!

Julia| 10.9.09 @ 3:41PM

I believe the money that has been recently spent by Congress was intended to shore up the banks that screwed up under Bush. Because they were not carefully regulated.

Grzmlyk| 10.9.09 @ 9:10AM

OMG! You mean Sean Penn didn't win AGAIN?

I'm shocked! SHOCKED! to find moral turpitude among the Nobel committee.

Seriously, you right-wing ideologues: You'd think that so-called "conservatives" would have welcomed the return of the Jesus Christ, for whom we've been waiting for, oh, 2000 years. Now that the Anointed One has deigned to descend to our level and walk among mere mortals, the LEAST we can do is award him Nobel Prize for that act alone.

After all, in his first incarnation, he was known as the Prince of Peace.

I'm thinking they should alter the spelling to Nobel "Piece" Prize.

Then Angelina Jolie might finally get her due.

If somebody actually thought that this was going to help the President in any shape or form, well I think they were seriously mistaken. I haven’t stopped laughing since I read this news. This is going to backfire and explode into their collective faces.
The President’s die hard supporters, will remain die hard supporters, no matter what, they don't need any prodding, but those fence sitting people out there, well, they fell “right” off their fence laughing at this too. This is just too friggin’ funny!!
What’s next? Is he going to pitch a no hitter too? We’ve seen his pitch before too, and what a great breaking ball he's got.

Too Funny!!

As the great American patriot, stalwart Obama critic, indefatigable champion of the American Constitution and tireless defender of our Civil Liberties Glenn Greenwald writes:

Beyond Afghanistan, Obama continues to preside over another war -- in Iraq: remember that? -- where no meaningful withdrawal has occurred. He uttered not a peep of opposition to the Israeli massacre of Gazan civilians at the beginning of this year (using American weapons), one which a U.N. investigator just found constituted war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity. The changed tone to Iran notwithstanding, his administration frequently emphasizes that it is preserving the option to bomb that country, too -- which could be a third war against a Muslim country fought simultaneously under his watch. He's worked tirelessly to protect his country not only from accountability -- but also transparency -- for the last eight years of war crimes, almost certainly violating America's treaty obligations in the process. And he is currently presiding over an expansion of the legal black hole at Bagram while aggressively demanding the right to abduct people from around the world, ship them there, and then imprison them indefinitely with no rights of any kind.

It's certainly true that Obama inherited, not started, these conflicts. And it's possible that he could bring about their end, along with an overall change in how America interacts with the world in terms of actions, not just words. If he does that, he would deserve immense credit -- perhaps even a Nobel Peace Prize. But he hasn't done any of that. And it's at least just as possible that he'll do the opposite: that he'll continue to escalate the 8-year occupation of Afghanistan, preside over more conflict in Iraq, end up in a dangerous confrontation with Iran, and continue to preserve many of the core Bush/Cheney Terrorism policies that created such a stain on America's image and character around the world.

Through no fault of his own, Obama presides over a massive war-making state that spends on its military close to what the rest of the world spends combined. The U.S. accounts for almost 70% of worldwide arms sales. We're currently occupying and waging wars in two separate Muslim countries and making clear we reserve the "right" to attack a third. Someone who made meaningful changes to those realities would truly be a man of peace. It's unreasonable to expect that Obama would magically transform all of this in nine months, and he certainly hasn't. Instead, he presides over it and is continuing much of it. One can reasonably debate how much blame he merits for all of that, but there are simply no meaningful "peace" accomplishment in his record -- at least not yet -- and there's plenty of the opposite. That's what makes this Prize so painfully and self-evidently ludicrous.

Nick| 10.9.09 @ 9:47AM

Is this the same Glenn Greenwald who defended white supremacist Matt Hale multiple times on "free speech" grounds?

The same Matt Hale in federal prison for soliciting the murder of a federal judge?

That Glenn Greenwald?

S.L. Toddard| 10.9.09 @ 10:22AM

How bizarre. What a curious creature you are. You keep bringing that up, as though it's relevant, or even an indictment on Glenn Greenwald's character. Yes, he defended someone accused of a horrible crime. That's what lawyers do. You might find it interesting to learn that in America we ensure that everyone, regardless of the crimes of which they're accused, is provided with a vigorous and competent defender in trial. We make sure the very worst of us are defended zealously to ensure that the rest of us are as well. It's one of the bedrock principles of American jurisprudence, and you'd really do yourself a favor to make yourself at least somewhat familiar with it. That Glenn Greenwald - gay and Jewish - defended a white supremacist and his freedom of speech in court is testament to the strength of his principles and character, and his devotion to the rule of law, and is admirable in the extreme.

Nick| 10.9.09 @ 11:05AM

Again, you show that you live in Toddardland (or is it Greenwaldland?)

You actually believe we "ensure" all accused are "provided with a vigorous and competent defender in trial"? Ha-Ha! Can I sell you a bridge?

We don't "ensure" a competent defense, we ensure ACCESS to a defense, competent or otherwise.

And nobody forced Greenwald to defend Hale. So, yes, this says much about his character, or lack of it, I should say.

As Mitch McDeere said in "The Firm", "Who is worse, the mobster, or the lawyer who hides his money?"

S.L. Toddard| 10.9.09 @ 10:27AM

Also, yet another emotion-driven, personality-based "argument" from Nick. No need to address the substance of the piece, just fall back on ad-hominem - the lone weapon in Nick's argument arsenal - and attack the source rather than the argument.

Old dogs and new tricks, I suppose.

Nick| 10.9.09 @ 11:12AM

It is not "emotion-driven", it is a simple statement of facts.

Character matters a great deal when citing a source. Or would you quote David Duke if he agreed with you?

Which he often does when it concerns Israel.
Yes, I know, gratuitous cheap-shot. I couldn't help myself!

Tim| 10.9.09 @ 9:38AM

Face it, it was a slow year for peace.

Pete| 10.9.09 @ 9:42AM

Peace = Diversity, the greatest force for good in the universe. Jeez, it's so simple.
