The Spectacle Blog

When Hell freezes over five times in succession and rhinoceri write sonnets on Pluto, the Washington Post’s Robin Givhan will stop writing love letters to Michelle Obama. Here the Obamas broke precedent and put the prestige of the presidency on the line, as well as ignoring much more pressing problems at home, all for a spectacularly unsuccessful and remarkably narcissistic effort to secure the Olympics for the Chicago Way, and all Givhan can do is gush about how wonderfully Michelle Obama had performed anyway. Givhan wrote that the First Lady “was her team’s most valuable player.” And, quoting others, “”She was truly elegant, articulate and persuasive.” Givhan again: “In the end, the failed bid notwithstanding, not even the leader of the free world managed to outshine the first lady. Officials who met with her were impressed, particularly with her ability to quickly shift gears as she chatted with everyone from up-and-coming athletes to heads of state.”And: “The first lady could just as easily have received a gold star.”

Meanwhile, the Post’s other news stories spent paragraph after paragraph after paragraph providing excuses for why the Obamas fell short and why it wasn’t their fault. Reading the coverage is enough to give you the sick feeling you get when you eat way too much cotton candy.

Here’s the truth: Both Obamas’ speeches to the Olympic voters were ridiculously self-referential and self-reverential.

The Prez: “I ran for President because I believed deeply that at this defining moment, the United States of America has a responsibility to help in that effort, to forge new partnerships with the nations and the peoples of the world…. Nearly one year ago, on a clear November night, people from every corner of the world gathered in the city of Chicago or in front of their televisions to watch the results of the U.S. Presidential election. Their interest wasn’t about me as an individual. Rather, it was rooted in the belief that America’s experiment in democracy still speaks to a set of universal aspirations and ideals.”

Right, it’s all about the message sent to the world by his own election.

Mrs. Obama: “I never dreamed that the Olympic flame might one day light up lives in my neighborhood….

I’m also asking as a daughter. See, my dad would have been so proud to witness these Games in Chicago. And I know they would have meant something much more to him, too…..If he had lived to see this day — if he could have seen the Paralympic Games share a global stage with the Olympic Games, if he could have witnessed athletes who compete and excel and prove that nothing is more powerful than the human spirit, I know it would have restored in him the same sense of unbridled possibility that he instilled in me….”

This is solipsism at its greatest heights, or rather depths. The message wasn’t about why Chicago itself is worthy and competent to hold the games, but about why the reflected glory of the Obama’s should give an added glow to Chicago. Call it the penumbral theory of Olympic pitches.

Obviously, though, the Obamas’ penumbras aren’t anywhere near as bright as they themselves, much less the Post, seem to believe.

From the beginning, it was a gamble - RIGHT ON!! - that's what zerO's voters and the rest of us now suffering under his empty "rock star" Follywood styrofoam image knew from the start - betting on those sad odds was dumb, but voting for it was loopy looney ignorant.
How ironic and absurd is Democratic pollster Mellman's comment ... "I think Americans want a president who is going to fight for their country," when, in fact, Obozo has done NOTHING but diss the United States from the start!! Obama has NO clue what America is all about and what Americans believe or want - he is nothing more than a Soros lap-dog.
Mellman and the rest of the Obama fool tools are smoking Nope and Dope - the family dog knew that nonsense was specious from the beginning - just like Obobo's fake Greek columns. Obama and Big Michelle are certainly NOT ambassadors for America - never were - they ARE ambassadors for THEMSELVES - Copenhagen was ALL about Chicago Union (which is EXACTLY what Obama Care is) political payoff and lust for personal power, absolute narcissistic self-centered laughable "The One' crazed hype for Barry Insane Obozo ummm, ummm, ummm - not an ounce was for America or Americans.
The Darth Vader mask if off Obama and his Chicago thugs such as David Axelrod, who said on CNN -where else except GE Immelt's Obama diaper-wiper MSNBC - "The president made a very strong appeal, and it didn't work out..." -- Axelrod, Sherlock in disguise - REALLY, Axelrod?? - believe me the American people KNOW IT DIDN'T WORK OUT - AND IT WON'T WORK OUT because Obama is WAY ABOVE HIS PAY GRADE in his Follywood role as POTUS - and Americans despise Obama's Fascist socialist ideology and his I HEART CHAVEZ/ACORN leftist idiocy and his Honduras Constitutional betrayal and his refusal to make trade agreements because of Union/SEIU/ACORN payoffs - all of that and MORE is undermining our Constitution, our capitalist economic system, and our individual freedoms - TOTUS and FLOTUS (was she also carrying her plastic "Fashion" award - oh, Americans are so impressed - that makes us sooo proud - our FLOTUS can dress herself!)are pathetic in their drippy progressive self-obsessed liberal misplaced sentimental grade D- "speeches," which is EXACTLY what the Olympic Committee saw and heard: The Obama trademark - styrofoam image, no substance - exactly the same sham liberal "educational" philosophy that has destroyed our educational system and put our children LAST in line in the world - No Payoff From Gamble is a perfect title for the Obama Movie - Americans are mad as hell with this rip-off and will empty D.C. of a government that thinks it is the Reichstag - McKinnon stupidly says what everyone - including the Olympic Committee - knows ... Obama is simply PLAYING the ROLE as president - BUT McKinnon is wrong when he says Americans would prefer Obama do that than play the Chicago Chamber of Congress act - AMERICANS WANT A PRESIDENT TO BE PRESIDENT - IT'S NOT A ROLE, STUPID - IT IS THE ESSENCE OF THE CHARACTER OF THE ELECTED PERSON and Obama fails that at every angle of the camera, every TOTUS nugatory whimper, every hollow dissembling whopper zerO utters. Obama lost Chicago's bid NOT BECAUSE OF POLITICS, BUT BECAUSE NOTHING IS BEHIND THE TELEPROMPTER...The Obama Show played on Broadway long enough for the people to be conned, but it no longer plays in Peoria, Axelrod... Americans know - Once a genius, Twice a fool - Styrofoam is one hell of a mess to clean up, but Americans are resourceful, powerful, determined, strong, smart people - ESPECIALLY when you mess with out freedom. Obama is a fool to mess with
Americans because there is NOTHING "typical" about us, Obama.

Dennis Rueffer| 10.3.09 @ 7:48PM

Ann, you are mad as hell and so am I. Thanks for expressing my sentiments exactly. Let's pray for a turnaround on this rogue administration then let's all work to see it disassembled in '10.

janranch| 10.4.09 @ 7:13AM

What a "right on" comment. Ann has said what MILLIONS of people are thinking. Everyone will see this at the polls. p.s.-- Michael sat on her fathers knee to watch Carl Lewis in the olympics of yesteryear. She was 20. They just don't get it!

Jazzibelle| 10.4.09 @ 9:11AM

Right On Sista!

Nichol Morgan| 10.4.09 @ 10:59PM

Thank you for putting my feelings and thoughts into words. I wish I was able to express myself that well. You are exactly right.

Oldefarte| 10.3.09 @ 11:54AM

The reaction of many of us to Porky I and II------"""""OINK, OINK,OINK!!!!!

Liberal Reader| 10.3.09 @ 2:46PM

Chicago is a GREAT American city.

It is disgraceful and stupid to respond to its bid for the Olympics being rejected with glee or joy.

As George W Bush, who strongly supported this initiative said, "I cannot think of a better city to represent the United States of America."

Faffnir| 10.3.09 @ 2:57PM

I thought you were going to abandon this site because we failed to appreciate the clear, shining brilliance of your thoughts? Please provide a citation for the Bush quote, or did you just make it up?

BD57| 10.3.09 @ 6:07PM

You're playing the "Patriot" card?

Oh please.

Jazzibelle| 10.4.09 @ 9:09AM

Well then.
Maybe Chicago would have had a better shot if George W Bush had gone to Copenhagen.

James| 10.3.09 @ 4:07PM

The Obamas opened themselves up to ridicule with their cultish hype and foolish gamble in Copenhagen. Their failure tarnishes their lusture and may make it easier to defeat or change some of the presidents legislative projects. That is grounds for celebration.

Olympics games put most host cities deeply in debt and Chicago is already financially challenged. Chicago is better off without the expense. Politicians and their allies will lose money but that is a good thing.

Deborah D | 10.4.09 @ 4:49AM

James -- Their speeches were embarrassing, such obvious over-the-top pathos. Who writes these things?

It's not just Chicago that is better off without the expense. I'm sure The One and the Mayor would have shuffled most of the expense onto the backs of all taxpayers, not just Chicago or Illinois...they would have spread the expense around and then spread the wealth into the coffers of Obama and Daley backers in Chicago.

In that respect I say "thank you, Mr. President and Mrs. Obama for screwing this up royally for the sake of the American people."

Liberal Reader| 10.3.09 @ 5:01PM

James,

This country endured 8 embarrassing years of W's inability to speak for more than 30 seconds without mangling the English language.

I think we'll survive Obama's attempt to get the Olympics for this country.

BD57| 10.3.09 @ 5:53PM

Funny how you guys always come back to this ...

so you prefer people who speak foolish things well?

Nick| 10.4.09 @ 12:18AM

I wasn't embarrassed at all.

I was even proud most of the time.

Colorado | 10.4.09 @ 8:23AM

Just as I expected Nobama and his fawning media are blaming President Bush and his administration for his complete failure in Copenhagen. When will this loser admit that he is a loser?

Jazzibelle| 10.4.09 @ 9:15AM

More like 8 years of the Left's inability to hear straight talk.

David| 10.4.09 @ 3:16PM

As long as his teleprompter is working and the ventriloquist who feeds the teleprompter doesn't run out of words.

Vicki| 10.4.09 @ 4:58PM

At least George W. Bush could speak from his heart. Take Obama off his teleprompter and all you get is "uh..mm..uh..well..um......." The man doesn't have a clue. George Bush definitely had a clue and right now I am missing him terribly. It was nice to have a real leader - a man who had real convictions and stuck to them. Obama doesn't believe in anything but himself. He is full of it.

Tomas| 10.4.09 @ 6:07PM

Bush mangled the English language, yet O can't put together one coherent sentence without TOTUS....

And you, self-proclaimed Liberal Reader, can't even spell "nuclear."

I think you're really just some kid hopped up on pimples and testosterone... too much pizza and pot.

Get a job... or go to school.

-

DrTomVoter| 10.3.09 @ 7:07PM

BD, it's always the same. 1. Demonize the messenger. 2. Play the "yes, but Bush card." LR writes here because on the socialist blogs he would just be one of the crowd and ignored. It's time people here did the same.

Summer| 10.3.09 @ 7:17PM

The narcissism of the President and First Lady are truly embarrassing. I wish they would just get over themselves.

The fawning liberal media do the First Couple no favors by pretending they can do no wrong. They need a reality check.

Becky| 10.3.09 @ 10:08PM

The world is just not that into them. Or something like that.

Jazzibelle| 10.4.09 @ 9:25AM

I just wish Obama's "They Like Me ... They Really, Really Like Me" World Tour would end. I keep envisioning a cartoon of him slapping his forehead with the palm of his head, saying, "OMG!! Now I get it! Being POTUS actually means that I will have to WORK for 4 years!" (Well, just 3 now)

larry digiorgio| 10.4.09 @ 5:01AM

I have an idea, at the next teaparty get the teleprompter up and have the crowd sing mmm, mmm, mmm song. Nothing works better than ridicule.

Jim| 10.4.09 @ 10:24AM

LD, that is perfect, we all sing mmm, mmm, mmm all the way through this nightmare of the O's and the other communist

Colorado| 10.4.09 @ 8:19AM

Oh come on people. You all know what a sacrifice Michelle made in going to Copenhagen. It was such a burden to her but somehow she managed to do it. She is to be admired, who else could take such a trip and get kicked in the butt and then go home?

Jim| 10.4.09 @ 10:30AM

MO and O were so tired from the IOC trip, they could barely enjoy their wedding anniversary by traveling only across town for dinner, poor us how will we prevail with our calling to transform the US for the little people!

Everyone of you disgust me. Barrack is a handsome, beautiful man who should be adored and admired for his strong shoulders and dashing looks. You are all jealous. So what if Iran becomes a Nucular power.

Lullaby's, Legends and Lies| 10.4.09 @ 10:20AM

Somebody corrected me recently, after I admitted in my post that I thought you were a Gal all along. So I apologized to you for saying that, just in case I offended you. But here I am again questioning myself about you L.R., you just don’t sound like a guy to me, you really don’t. It’s just something about your writing style I think, that just makes you sound very feminine, very Tom Daschlesque if you will (I just made that word up).

Which is okay, if you’re a girl, but they say you’re not, so maybe it’s not okay, but what do I know? So it must be your “Liberal” side that’s coming through when you write, that’s making you sound that way. I guess it’s just none of my business, but I do get this creepy feeling when I read your posts.

So once again, I apologize for getting your gender confused again. I’ll try to ignore it from now on, by not reading anymore of your posts. That should clear up any confusion that I might have in the future.

Now about that Tom Daschle character, he did have a sex change before he became a Senator right? Because there’s no way in hell, that a guy from the Great State of South Dakota could talk like that, there’s just no way. But if I’m wrong about him too, well then I apologize to him too, and I better quit while I’m ahead. I’m digging my grave deeper with every word that I write.

Summer| 10.4.09 @ 5:04PM

LLL, I've already told you that your confusion is well founded--LibReader/Jeremiah is confused, too.

Perhaps the little troll is a hermaphrodite. I hope that's not racist.

Liberal Reader, what planet do you spend most of your time on? Handsome, beautiful, adored, etc., those are great presidential qualifications. BTW, strong shoulders' name is spelled Barack.

birmingham| 10.4.09 @ 11:27PM

factis | 10.4.09 @ 9:35AM

It is not what the Obama's did, it is how they went about doing it...which is the problem with everything THEY have done, and most everything done by the D.C. bureaucracy for the past 60 years.

The Obama's are Affirmative Action Bureaucrats. They did not and do not see anything "wrong" with what they do any more than a typical bureaucrat sees anything "wrong" in the make-work job they do. FDR started growing this Bureaucracy and now the bitter fruits are being borne.

What do WE THE PEOPLE do? How can we dismantle the seething hives of bureaucrats that think and speak and act like the Obamas?

The Democratic Leadership is making "government" the ONLY growing "business" in the country. Fact is, the leviathan bureaucracy will have to be totally dismantled before leaders like Mr. Obama, Mr. Reid, Ms. Pelosi, etc. can be turned out and kept out.

No matter which side of the political spectrum you are on, it is The Constitutional Republic of The United States of America that allows you the Liberty to think and speak as you do today.

The lies and the hypocrisy spoken by the Obamas, most Democrats, and most of the hive-mind Bureaucracy are dead-set against Liberty and The Constitution.

The question is, how do WE THE PEOPLE go about the difficult and painful business of putting millions of Federal, State, and Local bureaucrats out of work before the Bureaucrats grind Us to powder beneath their heels?

This ain't no foolin' around, folks. The Obamas and the Bureaucrats are peas in a pod. Millions of 'em. They support one-another. They suffer from delusions of doing "goodness" but what they are doing can only be described as evil: low-grade common evil. Common evil becomes uncommon only when it is indulged and developed as it has been since the days of FDR's New Deal. The New Deal wasn't "new" at all. It was the same 'ol fearful self-serving evil. You can't take care of yourself. Let the Government take care of you. And now there are, literally, millions of Bureaucrats whose job it is to "take care of us" and whose paychecks and pensions depend on the tax-money we send to Washington. Is a National Tax Revolt the answer?

Check out these links about how quickly Mr. Obama is going about the business of changing the wild-west Freedom of The Internet:

http://online.wsj.com/article/.....85208.html

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITI.....index.html

The Bureaucrats know that the greatest threat to their power is effective clear communication between those who oppose them That's us: We The People. Do you really believe that Mr. Obama and the Bureaucrats will allow us to keep expressing ourselves the way I am expressing myself here and now, the way you express yourself when you post here or anywhere else?

It was INTERNET COMMUNICATION that made possible the great gathering of people in Washington on Saturday, September 12th 2009. My wife and I had not even considered driving from Alabama to D.C. until I happened to read the inspiring words of an ordinary citizen ONLINE. Those words motivated us and we decided, as in a moment of time, to drive up there and join the congregation.

Would we have done so without the 'net? It is impossible to say for certain but probably not. I don't pay much attention to television, I don't listen to radio and I don't read newspapers at all. I am a full-fledged believer in the communication revolution of the Internet and the WorldWideWeb.

The 2nd link leads to a CNN report of DHS hiring 1000 (one thousand) new cybersecurity experts. Here's a squib: ""Cybersecurity is one of our most urgent priorities," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in making the announcement Thursday."

Do you really believe those new pairs of eyes at DHS are gonna be looking outward toward China, Korea, the Middle East? Those places have the same kind of Bureaucrats as we do. Bureaucrats who get their paychecks and pensions from the labor and tax of We The People.

Michele and Barack Obama are bureaucrats first and foremost. Bureaucrats don't see anything wrong with doing whatever it takes to preserve the bureaucratic way of life. To my way of thinking, the bureaucratic life is no life at all.

I want to dismantle the Bureaucracy totally and completely; dismantle the leviathan Federal Bureaucracy. If We The People can't get it done, nobody will do it for us. And the Bureaucrats will grind us to powder. If you don't think so, look what's happening in England right now.

SandyC| 10.4.09 @ 8:51PM

NickInVirginia| 10.4.09 @ 9:54AM

I must admit that ever since her "for the first time in my life..." and "America is a mean country" remarks, I have had nothing but a low opinion of Mrs. 0bama.

But I don't think my opinion on this matter is biased because of the fact that I dislike her.

When she started talking about her father with MS, the first thing that popped into my head was "This might be a good pitch for the SPECIAL Olympics, that Eunice Kennedy Shriver got started, but it is out of place for the standard Olympics".

Basically, this "presentation" to the IOC was just another ego trip for the 0bamas, when they were supposed to have been making a BUSINESS case as to why the IOC should choose Chicago (i.e., "you will make more money if you have it here, and this is why...").

Not just misplaced priorities, but pure stupidity.

Liberal Reader, your thoughts, your grammar, your punctuation, and your diction are well attuned. Just like your hero and most pseudo-educated American Negroes, you attempt to use words to impress, rather than express, and end up doing neither.

For all others, may I recommend an unusually excellent post at today's American Thinker, analyzing the failure of Obama's sales pitch from a Business 101 viewpoint. To wit, they didn't believe in their product, they spoke of the benefits to themselves and not the IOCC, and they focused on the sellers (i.e. themselves) and not the product. Of course, for people who've never attempted a legitimate business enterprise or election, these things are terribly esoteric.

Finally, as another excellent post at American Thinker notes, Obama is the premier symptom, not the cause, of America's decline. All those who continue to believe in the fabled "American people" haven't looked around lately and seen just where all those people originated. Add the "We must take back higher education" crowd: but, of course, by the time anyone reaches college it is far too late. I can't even speak frankly at my son's small Christian school - the moms are "too busy" to be "political" and "can't we all just get along?" Sure we can, just go along and get along and continue along our road to Hell. There's no turning back, guys, so just remember who's ultimately in control and try to survive this tragicomedy as best you can, until its preordained denouement.

Liberal Reader| 10.4.09 @ 6:44PM

"pseudo educated American Negroes"

I love all the protestations by members of your white nationalist movement -- the Palin and Beck inspired proto-fascist we're-angry Know Nothingism that now passes for a conservative movement -- that you are not racists. It's just a ludicrous claim, and I'll say it again: racism motivates more of you than any of you are willing to admit.

Summer| 10.4.09 @ 7:17PM

Now, this is the REAL troll, Jeremiah. His spittle soaked post proves it.

Race baiting is the last refuge of liberal scoundrels like Jeremiah/LR.

Thinker| 10.4.09 @ 7:35PM

What? Liberal Reader, now tell me truly. Is not Obama a Negro? Doesn't he call himself the first Black President?

Thinker| 10.4.09 @ 7:39PM

Liberal Reader,
Last time I looked, Socialism had no skin color. It is rather, a Godless theology which attracts Godless people, who believe themselves to be Gods. Wouldn't you agree?

Thinker| 10.4.09 @ 7:42PM

You are assuming we are white. Isn't that a racsist thing to do? Have I called you a black anything? I don't assume such things. This is more proof of the Left's moral bankruptcy. Always accusing us of the VERY thing YOU are actually doing!

Liberal Reader| 10.4.09 @ 7:47PM

Thinker

Lame ... Lame .... Lame.

There. I've responded to each of your posts -- with more loquacity than they deserved.

Thinker| 10.4.09 @ 11:27PM

Too much common sense for you? Your answers, if you were able to be honest, would reveal what you truly are, a racist and a liar, that is why you don't wish to answer, but you cannot be truthful. You live one big lie. Apparently you are the only one who doesn't see it. Your lofty vocabulary won't save you, nor does it fool a single soul. You need to wake up, before it's too late.

SandyC| 10.4.09 @ 9:11PM

Sheila- As a caucasian, I am offended as to your refernce to "pseudo-educated American negroes." You are a racist. Do you think Clareance Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Ken Blackwell and many other "African Americans" are only "pseudo-educated" as well? Your attitude is part of the problem, and what gives conservatives a bad name. Thank you lord, you are in the minority. What a waste of an apparent education.

C4P| 10.4.09 @ 11:07PM

Sandy, Sheila's probably a troll. Liberals post racist nonsense all of the time and then decry their own posts--just like LibReader/Jeremiah above. LibReader pulls this neat little trick all of the time, just to demoralize us. Creep.

Nick| 10.4.09 @ 11:54PM

C4P,

You may be right about Sheila. Although she did recommend an article from American Thinker. Not the usual troll behavior.

It is entirely possibly the she may be from a certain generation when everyone refered to blacks as Negroes.

Ever heard of the United Negroe College Fund?

Nick| 10.4.09 @ 11:56PM

Forgive all the typo's.
Time for bed!

C4P| 10.5.09 @ 12:53AM

Too predictable, Nick. Notice Sheila is a 'Christian' woman with a son at a 'Christian' school? (Jeremiah is the real bigot.) No one says Negro anymore, especially someone young enough to have small children.

Jeremiah is a clever troll, but a troll nonetheless. I've noticed this same pattern on other threads and it's starting to become commonplace. Fits the loser's 'Conservatives are racists' meme--what a jackass! Seriously mentally ill.
