Former Nevada state Republican Party Chairwoman Sue Lowden has
announced that she will run for the GOP nomination to take on
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) next year. She is now
arguably the biggest name in a race that also includes state Sen.
Mark Amodei and businessman Danny Tarkania. Polling has
consistently showed Reid vulnerable, but Rep. Dean Heller and
former Rep. John Porter both took a pass on the race.
Lowden's only prior electoral experience was holding a state
senate seat -- in a swing district -- for four years. She was
defeated for re-election in 1996. But she has a professional
campaign team and her entry into the race makes it more likely
that Reid will face a serious challenger next fall.
