Remembering 9/11

I was remiss in not writing a 9/11 remembrance this year, so I offer, as an admittedly weak alternative, my columns from this site for each of the past two years. From last year, I say that President Bush deserves some thanks. I wrote that as somebody who was sharply criticizing him on other matters while most conservatives were still singing his praises. From two years ago, I say that the "American mind" must recapture its original understanding that we are a nation united by more than divides us, especially the accurate conviction that "We are not aggressors, but defenders of freedom and justice." God bless America. Actually, God HAS blessed America. May He continue to do so, and may those who have chosen to be our enemies reconsider their hatred and abandon their evil. May they come to understand that our blessings are not a curse on anybody else, but an inspiration. And may our own leaders likewise appreciate that we have nothing for which to apologize, but much for which to be both proud and profoundly grateful.

I was a Science teacher on 9/11 here in Florida. My kids asked me what should we do to protect ourselves. I said that there are about 1 Billion Moslems in the world and that about 10% of them were these crazies, a number I read. I continued that this means about 100 Million who were the Islamic crazies or just say 50 Million at the least. These people will not compromise whatsoever which means that the amount of killing required to rid ourselves of these nuts will scare the Hell out of us. Nothing has changed my opinion since. Either we fight for survival or the barbarians win.
Take your pick.

Which is more daunting: Our enemies at home or abroad? We've got our work cut out for us, people.

Freedom ISN'T free.

Alan Brooks| 9.11.09 @ 11:31PM

we should point out Bush's administration killed fewer people in seven years of the current war than Carter's administration killed in four years of the Cold War from '77 - '80.

Alan Brooks| 9.11.09 @ 11:37PM

... if Bush is, just say, 40th in the ranking of potuses, then Carter is around 46.

Nixon, #47
Harding, #48
Buchanan, #49
LBJ, #50

Alan Brooks| 9.11.09 @ 11:44PM

oh, CRIPES, I confused the 44 potuses with the 50 states! egad, Daphne is rubbing off on me:
Bush would be #34, say.

Carter, #40
Nixon, #41
Harding, #42
Buchanan, #43
LBJ, #44

"Nothing for which to apologize."

I was wondering where the dig against Obama would figure into this.

So -- the message, between the lines is, America would not have been attacked if we'd not been so apologetic?

How exactly is Obama to blame for 9.11.? Because we already know Bill Clinton is responsible for it.

Obama's so called "apologetics" have gotten us some street cred in parts of the world that were estranged if not completely alienated by the cowboy style.

In case you haven't noticed, major terrorist plots tend to be thwarted with intense, international cooperation. The Jordanians and Egyptians especially are central to our fight against terrorism, and they have populations that were coming to think of the U.S. as an enemy.

A little soft talk didn't weaken this country; it made it stronger.

Although of course if we'd just bombed a few more Arab nations, maybe everything would be O.K.

Angel --

What enemies at home exactly? And how are they worse than, say, Al Quaeda?

You know, that was a tactic of the Nazis. They always posited an interior enemy that would "stab the troops in the back." This helped them explain their military defeats and legitimized their barbarities.

Angel| 9.12.09 @ 1:23AM

LR/Jeremiah, don't you ever let up? Take off your troll hat, put your verbal brass knuckles away and relax. My mind is with the 3000 Americans who died such terrible deaths 8 years ago. I can't believe it's been 8 years--it doesn't seem like that long ago.

May they rest in peace.

Angel| 9.12.09 @ 1:38AM

On the other hand, dear J/LR; may I pose two thorny questions to you? Why do you know so much about the strategic tactics of the Nazis? Could it be you are boning up on der Fuehrer's basics for future endeavors?

Nick| 9.12.09 @ 2:12AM

Mr. Hillyer,

Amen, sir, amen.

Angel,

Ha-ha!!!
Although, I don't think Marxist Reader has ever boned up on anything historical in his life.

Yosemeti Sam| 9.12.09 @ 10:34AM

" ... God bless America. Actually, God HAS blessed America...."

Perhaps at one time - early on in nationhood.

To a society ever becoming hedonistically Babylon-ized, these now rote expressions - I submit - now would have GOD be a
'partner' in its' self-evident moral decay.

Sacrilege!

Liberal Reader| 9.12.09 @ 11:33AM

Angel --

No, I know so much about Nazi tactics because I bothered to educate myself about them before I spout off remarks about them in public, unlike you.

Studying history does not mean you intend to emulate it. In fact, the only way to avoid fascist outbreaks is to study fascist rhetoric and tactics.

Clearly, like many of your friends around here, you take pride in your ignorance: you take knowing nothing about history as a badge of Americanism, as a point of pride. It's what characterizes your brand of "conservatism" more than any other single thing I could name. Anti-intellectualism, irrationalism -- call it what you will. It's the raucous uproar of populist racism -- the Ur-fascist twinge of resentful and anxious people who feel impotent.

Oldefarte| 9.12.09 @ 1:03PM

We are BLESSED, but we are also CURSED by our ignorance in electing Obama as our President--------may God have mercy on us and grant us the wisdom to not re-elect him [or any of his derriere-kissing Democrats!!!!

Angel| 9.12.09 @ 1:55PM

Never disappoints: Thin-skinned as ever.

Silly troll.
