The Spectacle Blog

On the heels of that reprehensibly tone deaf yet illustrative WWF ad, we see this headline in the Washington Independent:

Kerry Marks Eve of 9/11 Anniversary With Push for Climate Legislation

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) kicked off the new campaign on Thursday to create a national security push to pass climate change legislation. Climate change, Kerry argued, will likely trigger some of the most critical threats to national security in the future, and should be addressed with aggressive action this year.

His speech was the keynote address at a conference that the American Security Project, a bipartisan national security think tank, hosted at The George Washington University. The event was titled, not so subtly, "The Day Before," and marks the eve of the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Kerry, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is working with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) to coauthor a Senate climate bill this year.

"Eight years ago today, on September 10th, 2001, America experienced one last moment of complacency before plunging into crisis," said Kerry. "That day, the world was already being transformed, but too few knew or understood the new era we were about to enter."

"Once again the world is being upended, and too few are taking action," he continued. "The latest science warns that we have a ten-year window - at most - to prevent catastrophic, irreversible climate change. That means we are once again living in a ‘day before' moment that cries out for action."

Kerry outlined the threats that climate change poses to national security, from increased drought, severe storms and rising sea levels in the United States to strains on resources, population displacement and increased international conflict abroad. The impacts will strain the United States' military and humanitarian capacities, he said.

The real lesson of "the day before," ladies and gentlemen, is that when we see a threat on the horizon, we can't afford to wait until it arrives. Unless we take dramatic action - now - to restrain global climate change, we risk unleashing an aggressive new challenge to global stability, to the livelihoods of hundreds of millions, and yes, to America's national security.

[...]

You know, the 9/11 Commission report found that in the lead-up to the attacks, we suffered from a "failure of imagination." We need to close the "imagination gap" on climate change and help people to envision a new kind of threat.

Ok, ok, so September 11 will now be cherished as an opportunity to address "climate change." That still leaves December 7, formerly remembered as "Pearl Harbor Day." What shall we use it for now?

jr| 9.10.09 @ 5:09PM

It was not only a failure of imagination it was a lack of reasonable intelligence -- after Clintoon and friends depleted the ranks and cut the budgets.

Rolfe| 9.10.09 @ 5:33PM

Shocking! How dare he politicize the eve of 9/11.

He should wait until the day after 9/11 when the capital will be the scene of a giant tea party. That's okey-dokey.

Pete| 9.10.09 @ 6:07PM

It would make a bit more sense, something like: "On the "day after" we are reminded that we must be ever vigilant against those who seek to harm our country. It is in this spirit that we gather to protest our anti-American president and his corrupt socialist henchmen." But I doubt they will frame it that way (they haven't yet, to my knowledge), though clearly they could do so with a lot more intellectual honesty than the global warming (cooling?) alarmists. By the way, that's a neat new touch, attaching a 10 year time frame for action to "save ourselves." Like the various bailouts and take-overs, they can then just claim success without a shred of proof...really is brilliant. "We avoided 300 billion deaths - love us, give us more of your money." Good folks, Rolfey (Rolfenfuhrer?), good folks.

c. j. acworth| 9.10.09 @ 6:36PM

So I guess we can add Islamic Fundamentalism to the list of things caused by global warming?

Rolfe| 9.10.09 @ 7:31PM

Hey Pete,

The nazi stuff -shove it real, real far up your ass you classless creep.

Reneeca| 9.10.09 @ 10:08PM

Kerry and likewise Boxer are so disgusting! To try and relagate 911 to the back of historical events, says a lot about these two idiots! Comparing the 911 events to national security is far fetched to say the least! Democrats have lost thier freaking minds!! What a sacrilege!!

Daisy| 9.10.09 @ 10:34PM

Rolfey/Jeremiah, you're such a humorless fascist liberal A-Hole. Lighten up, will ya?

Don't steal my name again, SOB.

John G.| 9.10.09 @ 10:47PM

Good grief.

Senator Kerry is a national disgrace, to go along with all of the Obama administration's efforts to politicize the tragic events of 9-11. Of all the days to push a radical environmental agenda, why does it have to be 9-11?

Because the extreme left cares not a whit for the patriotism, the sense of American individualism that we as a nation felt in the aftermath. The unity and hope and change that they espouse to come from their false platitudes, the droning and self-aggrandizing speeches, the styrofoam Greek columns etc., could never elicit such a response.

Being the egotistical windbags that they are, they'd rather see the real meaning behind 9-11 be buried under their obnoxious sense of self-gratification.

joeschmoe| 9.10.09 @ 11:18PM

Rolfi
wie gehts? I think thou dost protest a bit much....

Rolfe| 9.10.09 @ 11:19PM

John G,

So you won't be attending the 9/11 tea party?

Daisy,

An honest question--
Who or what is Jeremiah? I don't know what that means. Steal your name? WTF?

As for the rest, you sound like you're stoned--bumping into funhouse mirrors and screaming obscenities and insults at your distorted image. The spam made more sense.

Rolfe| 9.10.09 @ 11:30PM

Joshmoe,
Nyuck nyuck. Out spot...

Oy.

Jamie| 9.10.09 @ 11:50PM

Rolfey/Jeremiah/LibReader; get a life, loser. Your swine ACORN girlfriend is waiting for you. Bet you're all wee weed up thinking about it.

Rolfe| 9.11.09 @ 1:09AM

Ah, I get it now.

You're that "Angel" charmer from earlier. You've had alot of meth or something ,and think alot of the people who disagree with your sunny view of life are one and the same. You're changing your Amspec name as some sort of brilliant Kabuki theatre. You imagine one of the ACORN "officials" in the previous whatsit is my girlfriend. I believe you said it was the "swine" in the brown tanktop. You're on to me honey. Oops, you asked me not to call you honey. Sorry.

How's the investigation of that scandal that leaves Watergate, Iran-Contra, and Teapot Dome in the dust coming?

American Spectator, is this what you've become?

Rolfe| 9.11.09 @ 1:37AM

Yes, indeed, Angel and Pete were the ones wetting themselves over knee-slappers like "mocha messiah" and "blue-lipped genie". Thought-provoking, huh?

Sadly, yes.

This is what has become of the American Spectator.

NO TROLLS!| 9.11.09 @ 2:42AM

Rolfey/Jeremiah/LR/Marcel/Leo/Murphy/Tom Paine/Sybil, etc.; you smokin' crack again? With your ACORN girlfriend? I could see you with a beast like her; thick, meaty girls are your thing, huh?

You aid and abet sexual slavery of 13 year old illegal immigrants, too? I know you're a big ACORN proponent, so it must be true. You liberal Nazis are a real piece of work; and to think you're running the government now.

Amusing that a lying, scum sucking liberal like you lectures me on integrity. Perhaps you're mentally ill or you've just sold your soul.

Regardless, I pity you, troll.

SkofLbrls| 9.11.09 @ 7:32AM

Nice to see we have some Kool-aid-drinkers posting here now. As usual, their remarks are ever so refined. Name calling and insults really work for them, don't they? For all the "normal" people out here, have a great weekend. Enjoy the party tomorrow in Washington, while the obamabots cry in their beer.

Tim| 9.11.09 @ 9:56AM

Rolfe
ROLF?

DAC| 9.11.09 @ 10:05AM

Rolfie, let's boil it down, shall we? Did you rejoice at 9/11? Have you celebrated the day since, as a happy day when the country you despise got sucker punched? Of course you did, and of course you're happy today thinking about the murdered Americans and their still-grieving families. What exactly would you and your ideological fellow travelers (Dear Leader included) propose to do to prevent another similar event? Answer--nothing, because you welcomed the event. You'd be dancing in the streets like our Arab "friends" did that very morning. When the social disorder that your Dear Leader is carefully constructing actually comes to pass, what do you think your chances of survival are against people who have actually prepared for those days and can fend for themselves? Not good, jackass, not good. You haven't the slightest idea how to survive the crisis that your own foaming-at-the-mouth leftists/anarchists are fomenting.

Ken (Old Texican)| 9.11.09 @ 10:19AM

DAC You did boil it down. Thanks.
We need you at www.myteamusa.org

PS: There is a fascinating new book out in paper back "The Last Centurion" (fiction) by John Ringo.
It will chill your bones.

Rolfe| 9.11.09 @ 10:46AM

Yeah, it's boiled alright DAC, you un-American piece of filth. To think that true heroes have given their lives so you can spew your garbage.

You don't know the meaning of this great nation, obviously. Hell, I doubt you're even an American. If you are, it's sad.

On this of all days, to post anti-American, inhuman crap to a fellow countryman is to your shame, not mine.

My gosh, this is what you've become? How ugly.

How sad.

Pete| 9.11.09 @ 11:00AM

Herr Rolfenfuhrer is on a roll. As usual, not addressing anything of substance in anyone's posts, but on a roll nonetheless. Go goose step around your Stepmom's basement...and please don't call me a "creep" again, I don't think I could take that twince 24 hours. Dunce.

Nicholas Wind| 9.11.09 @ 11:02AM

I am a true conservative from Toronto Canada (you know ,San Francisco lite) and I love Americans as a whole but wtf is this guy talking about?

I think our liberal socialists are just completely from a different world than me, but the people you have running your country starting from that arrogant community organizer running your Country are really "retardation in full bloom!!"

I am only afraid if our liberals idiots get back in power federally they will follow your liberal idiots because half our Country is ga ga over your half black president.
Our media in TO has orgasims daily over this guy.

He would scare me if I was an American.

Good luck with that " hope and change" thing.

Ken (Old Texican)| 9.11.09 @ 11:29AM

HA! DAC
Old Rolfie sure put you in your place. He not only "played the race card" ...but played the ace of spades. Ha Ha Ha.

Now aren't you ashamed, DAC? heh.
I watched the second plane hit the towers...live...though at the moment I thought it was an instant replay.
I had two thoughts almost at the same time. First: "Father receive those folks unto yourself."
Second: (to my wife) "Honey, who ever did this don't have any idea of the storm they have brought down on their own heads."

I guess the thing that will always linger in my heart, were the absolute heroes that went INTO those buildings trying to help people get out...whew... that is courage! May God bless every one of them.

…can look forward to paying for the necessary surveillance. In accordance with a 9/10 mentality, the Obama administration is trying to diminish the date’s importance,  so Sen.  John Kerry’s push for climate change is probably seen as helpful since it ties in with Obama’s push to make 9/11 a day of  “service and remembrance” rather than a day to remind us that renaming or ignoring…

Jamie| 9.11.09 @ 1:45PM

Man, you know things are upside down and inside out when a flaming Liberal calls a Conservative "Un-American." Rolfey/LibReader, when did you develop your red, white and blue bona fides? November 4, 2008? Yeah, I thought so.

Rolfey is the All American Boy/Troll now. Pathetic.

Richard Baker| 9.11.09 @ 6:08PM

I was a Science teacher on 9/11 here in Florida. My kids asked me what should we do to protect ourselves. I said that there are about 1 Billion Moslems in the world and that about 10% of them were these crazies, a number I read. I continued that this means about 100 Million who were the Islamic crazies or just say 50 Million at the least. These people will not compromise whatsoever which means that the amount of killing required to rid ourselves of these nuts will scare the Hell out of us. Nothing has changed my opinion since. Either we fight for survival or the barbarians win.
Take your pick.
