OK. It's just too rich to pass on.
Here's Keith Olbermann over the weekend, blogging his fury over Glenn Beck's well-within the bounds revelations of Van Jones public record, much of which was delivered to Beck courtesy of Jones' quite public statements and actions. This excerpt (they are all over the place) has been taken from the website of our TAS colleague Robert Stacy McCain.
Here is Keith, the spittle practically visible on the computer screen:
Find everything you can about Glenn Beck, Stu Burguiere, and Roger Ailes. Tuesday we will expand this to the television audience and have a dedicated email address to accept leads, tips, contacts, on Beck, his radio producer Burguiere, and the chief of his TV enablers, Ailes…
Does this sound a tad familiar if you are a movie fan? Let's rack up this little riff from The Untouchables, the classic 1987 re-make of the old TV series based on the legendary G-Man Eliot Ness and his adventures with Chicago gangster Al Capone during the Roaring Twenties and early 1930s. In the film, Kevin Costner played Ness, with Robert DeNiro doing an outstanding turn as Capone, getting the notorious gangster's bullying nature and taste for violence down pat. Here is Olbermann on Beck…uh, sorry, I meant Capone on Ness…
"I want you to get this f… where he breathes! I want you to find this nancy-boy Eliot Ness, I want him DEAD! I want his family DEAD! I want his house burned to the GROUND! I wanna go there in the middle of the night and I wanna PISS ON HIS ASHES!"
What this sentiment betrays, as happens when a hard-core leftist lets the public mask slips, is that their authoritarian nature relentlessly propels them towards the personal destruction of their ideological opponents. Van Jones took himself down with a series of wildly nutty on-the- record remarks and actions. Beck never touched the guy's personal life -- was he a drunk? A cheat? A drug addict? In short: don't know and don't care. Mr. Jones private life is his own. His public record is not, and Beck concentrated his fire there. He continues to do his incredible research into the public record of others in the Obama administration, asking the American people in this 21st century communications web for help in this regard.
Olbermann, on the other hand, responds as above. Also, there is one notable difference between Jones and Beck. Jones was a government official, Glenn Beck is private citizen. Which means Olbermann has decided to threaten a private citizen for his actions in looking into the public record of a public official.
In a word?
Typical.
Oldefarte| 9.8.09 @ 11:11AM
It is truly TYPICAL of this little Jewish MOMMA'S BOY on MSNBC. Anyone watching/listening to his [and Maddow, Matthews, etc] insane garbage-speak is nothing short of MORONIC!!!!!!!!
Bob| 9.8.09 @ 11:23AM
Jeffrey, you've again given me a laugh. No commentator -- not even you -- is a "private citizen". Beck is public as he has advertisers and is on the PUBLIC airwaves. On TV, Olbermann only goes after what Beck says on the air. But I guess you don't have a perspective on that.
Beck has lost dozens of advertisers given what he's said. He was right about Van Jones, but this is the first time I've seen him right. Anyone can get a base hit once in a great while.
Secondly, Beck and Olbermann are competitors. Fox berates MSNBC and vice versa. Olbermann has been going after O'Reilly for years and the reverse is also true. Beck has been going after NBC for the same reason.
Beck is a joke and makes so many factual errors I can only laugh. Olbermann is about as left as they come and lacks any perspective. He is funny as well.
By the way, Jeffrey, if this is really an issue of "principle", why didn't you say something when O'Reilly made personal attacks against Olbermann?
And I do think it is hypocritical to say something like this when AmSpec allows the President to be called a socialist, communist, Nazi, racist, etc., here and none of you say anything against that.
Oh, well. Thank you for the comedy....
By the way, if both Beck AND Olbermann were taken off of television, it would be an improvement in my personal opinion.
Bob| 9.8.09 @ 11:30AM
So Oldfarte, in addition to being a racial bigot (which we saw on your comment on baggy pants, etc.), you have a problem with Jews? Olbermann is Unitarian, you "moron". Anyone who watches Beck is a "moron" as well.
I don't know who wins the battle of "garbage" between MSNBC and Fox. I think Fox is winning that battle by a nose (and I'm holding mine).
Jeffrey Lord| 9.8.09 @ 11:37AM
Bob...
Good morning! Glad to spice up the morning coffee.
Actually, in today's world of communications you are right. No one has any privacy anymore between the Internet, cell phones, security cameras etc etc.
But there is (as always!) a serious point here.
There is a vast difference between a private citizen - which means anyone not holding a government title - criticizing said official. Finding out Jones' record his public record - is perfectly acceptable. To actively use your show to destroy the personal life of someone else is, ah, different. Big time. The fact that you can't see the difference is telling. You keep insisting you are a libertarian. I'm skeptical.
I've listened to O'Reilly fairly regularly on Olbermann. He rakes him - and NBC and MSNBC - over the coals all the time. In all of that time I've never heard anything resembling a personal threat in terms of Olbermann's personal life - to this moment, other than the periodic gossip item in the NY Post - I have no idea of Olbermann's personal life and could care less. I wish him no harm..in fact wish him a life long lived. His show will rise or fall on the strength of his ability to bring ratings. Period. When MSNBC sees him as a liability as a ratings-getter they will pull the plug, not a moment before. I don't advocate trying to get advertisers to pull their ads - that is left-wing stuff. Let people decide what they wish to watch - ditto Fox etc etc.
Each side can battle it out. This is...still...America. After all, I write here and you post, right?
Have another sip!
ithitsthefan| 9.8.09 @ 11:42AM
Since Beck is a private citizen and Olbermann is publicly attempting to smear him by actively encouraging other private citizens to dig up dirt on him doesn't that mean that Olbermann is soliciting libel against Beck? Is this a lawsuit in the making?
Todd| 9.8.09 @ 11:50AM
Bob's comments? In a word? Typical
JP| 9.8.09 @ 11:52AM
Bob,
Van Jones' public record is what got him fired. You don't have to be a fan of Glenn Beck not to be offended by what Van Jones said. Van Jones controlled access to potentially $68 billion of stimulus money targetted for so-called Green Jobs. His is a public official. The MSM made this too easy for Beck. If Van Jones was a Bush appointee I am pretty confident his record would have been all over the MSM within 24 hours.
You and Olbermann appear to be of the opinion that Glenn Beck committed some kind of heinious crime. In my opinion Beck is one strange person. However, he has done yeoman's work in emphasizing the public words of public figures. All of Susteen's, Holder, and Jones' words are in the public domain.
Bob| 9.8.09 @ 12:03PM
Jeffrey, YOU are making the assumption that Olbermann is after "personal" information about these people. The fact that YOU read this into his quote is quite telling. What if Olbermann were after public statements, speeches, etc.? The point he may be trying to make is that we all have made public statements that are/were outrageous. True libertarians do not believe in censorship.
And I don't buy your argument that Beck is "private". Anyone who has a network show is a PUBLIC figure. Saying that he sleeps with donkeys is personal. However, coming up with one of his "public" statements/speeches to show hypocrisy is quite fair. If you can't stand the heat, you should get out of the kitchen.
Again, I don't drink coffee. I like spicy foods, however.
Tim| 9.8.09 @ 12:08PM
Beck strikes me as a little bit flakey, but then he does gets results. This is why he must be destroyed. If Beck was in the subway collecting old cans and pissing on the walls-he'd be a sought after Democrat voter demographic.
Bob| 9.8.09 @ 12:09PM
JP, I'm on record as saying that Van Jones should not be in the Obama administration. That is not the issue. What he said cannot be justified.
I never said that Beck committed a crime, only that he is an idiot. However, based on principle, I think it is fine for a left wing partisan to look at things that Beck has said when he criticizes someone else's background. Furthermore, I think the reverse is fine as well. I'm glad Beck brought this up! You see this all of the time with movie stars -- and I don't hear any of you complain about that. Beck is an entertainer just like any other movie star. And, by the way, so is Olbermann. If you notice, Lord referenced his "private" comment and I have no problem with that, either.
Beck's words are in the public domain as well.
Bob| 9.8.09 @ 12:12PM
And JP, stop with this nonsense of the "MSM". Fox is, by far, the biggest cable news network. Fox IS the "MSM". Talk radio is almost totally owned by the right. This "MSM" nonsense is no longer relevant. If it were, what Beck said would not have been heard.
Jeffrey Lord| 9.8.09 @ 12:20PM
Bob...
" Anyone who has a network show is a PUBLIC figure. "
Correct. They are not, however, a government official. A government official can come and get you, Bob. Not so anyone else.
Bob| 9.8.09 @ 12:56PM
Jeffrey..
"A government official can come and get you, Bob. Not so anyone else."
This is just not true. If I am a corporate executive and I said something 20 years ago that would be offensive to a lot of people, you could tell the CEO/Board and I would be fired. In addition, you have the legal remedy of a lawsuit.
I was once sued by a family that had ties to a very large law firm. The law firm owed the family a favor so they took the case without fees. They sued me just to get a small amount of money. Even though I was legally right, my legal expenses were going to exceed any settlement. They came after me simply because they had the power to do so.
So please, don't give me this nonsense that a private individual can't come and get me as your defense of your position. I expect more from you, Jeffrey.
Jeffrey Lord| 9.8.09 @ 1:08PM
Bob...
Of course any private citizen can come after you in court. But the deciding factor is...the court. AKA, the government. If you were sued, you were taken to the government...not to some guy's basement for a session with whips and chains, as it were.
The reason I see things in Olbermann's statement seems pretty obvious...the left has a serious taste for thuggery and violence. Communism, Nazi-ism, the KKK, union thugs - all these on the continum are left in nature. This is the underlying difference bewteen - yes - you the libertarian (leave me alone) and government (we will make you do this.) KO is on the left..ergo it isn't rocket science to recognize one of the left's basic premises in his threat - get dirt on Beck so I can harm him. The thuggery of the statement is apparent on its face, but if not, all one has to know is what he defends every day.

Mr. Lord... Mind terribly if we bring up a certain commenter's own very public record here? Darn it, but last time we did that, he boiled-over in contempt. Odd, really, how conveniently his own views adapt as necessary... but this the "public" internet, yes? (Mind if we link to a few of the funnier porkies? They would rather serve to illustrate the credibility with which he claims "balanced" views, would they not?) He's told so many sad lies, that quite frankly, "I expect more."
Bottom line on Beck, Ailes and Burguiere is that they are not on the public payroll, airwaves notwithstanding. Then again, Olbermann seems to understand how fake auto-hagiography can undermine one's credibility.
Peaemese Embeesee| 9.8.09 @ 1:33PM
Since Keith Olbermann loves to descend down to absurd 3rd grade Tea Bagging jokes ad nausea I've decided to give him a little taste of his own medicine and now call him, "Quiff OldGirlMan" since he's such a little immature sissy b!tch.
Now Quiff will feel the need to haul out his framed bull milking certificate once again and proclaim he's smarter then anyone else even though he never learned to controlled his urge to swallow. At nearly $100k a pop maybe he really did get a million dollar education plus such silky hair. (That's one more for all the Tea Bagging jokes Quiff)
So, there.
Then a flustered torqued-off Quiff will point out Beck often wears sneakers and sometimes cries on the air and after that shocking info he'll be back to more Tea Bagging jokes.
Yawn. . . maybe he will proclaim another sane person the worst person in the world while pounding his shoe on the table.
Double yawn.
Then he will lie about being paid over $8 per viewer - what pathetic douche.
Triple yawn, he's done.
Todd| 9.8.09 @ 1:36PM
Just maybe Bob the reason Fox is by far the biggest cable TV network because it is the only place you can go on TV to learn the truth about Obama and his administration. You tell us Van Jones had no business being in the White House but do you think NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC would ever bring up just what a radical this jerk-off was? Call Beck an idiot or just some dumb entertainer but he is providing facts just how corrupt, radical and power-hungry the Obama administration is. Funny how some "idiot" made Van Jones resign and be thrown under the bus by Obama. You know who a real idiot is? Someone who calls himself a fiscal conservative with a Harvard degree who voted for Obama and told everyone on this site what a smart non-ideological man he is. Yeah, I am referring to you.
SoCon| 9.8.09 @ 1:47PM
Ran, are you referring to 3/5 Bob or Bob the mighty teenaged Aramaic translator?
'RINO' Bob defends Keith Doberman's death threats against Beck and Beck's family. Smooth move, 'RINO' Bob.
Bob, list Beck's factual errors. C'mon, big mouth; speak up.
Beck's going after FCC 'Diversity' czar Mark Lloyd next. Go get 'em, Glenn!
Lou| 9.8.09 @ 2:00PM
If the ultra-left media – and that includes Katie Couric, Herr Olbermann, et al – had been doing their job in the first place, there never would have been any need for Jeffrey Lord, Fox News, Beck or the Drudge Report (remember when ABC sat on the Juanita Broadrick rape story, only to have it reported by Drudge?). They do the job the ultra-left media refuses to do. Thank God for their efforts! They keep us enlightened in an era when Republican sneezes become scandal and Democrat scandals become “sneezes.”
The ultra-left media act selectively as government watch dogs. When Dems are in power, the so-called “watch dog” wags its tail and submits to its “master.” When Republicans are in power, the “watch dog” snarls and attacks the enemy with ferocity.
Beck is representative of millions of Americans who see not just an administration they disagree with, but a whole host of unprecedented horrors (the “czarist regime”) and red flags emanating from 1600 Pennsylvania. Thanks to the true watch dogs in today’s media. Because of them, Obama pushed Van Jones under the bus. And Obama is growing increasingly tepid as the people rise up and reject a government monster never written into law or Constitution.
Johnno| 9.8.09 @ 2:10PM
Lou, the Lame Stream Media are just leftist mouthpieces. They have betrayed their watchdog duties and are the enemy of the American people.
They will pay for their treachery.
Bob| 9.8.09 @ 2:23PM
Jeffrey... taken to the basement to be tortured??? That's funny. You don't actually believe that, do you? I didn't think you were an extremist... Perhaps I'll have to change that thought. Do you also believe that Obama was put into office by way of Manchuria? For that matter, when did you last see Elvis? Last week?
Todd...
The right finds the dirt on the left, and vice versa. Fox wasn't the first to dig up dirt on the Bush administration. They've all taken up respective positions. We are an adversarial country -- liberals versus conservatives, plaintiff vs. defendant, sports teams, etc. You do have perspective, don't you?
Jeffrey, one other thought.... Are you saying the right never digs up dirt on the left? Digging up dirt is a non-partisan activity. Calling people names is mostly a right wing activity. They've got different methods, but the results are the same.
If you want proof, just look at the posts here at AmSpec -- communist, Nazi, socialist, Alinskyite, fascist, etc. Please, you must have some perspective....
Todd, as AmSpec continually proves, most people on the right don't want facts, charts, data, etc., what they want is dirt on liberals and we "RINO's". When they are presented with factual data, instead of arguing on the merits, they call people names and say that the data is biased.
Mike| 9.8.09 @ 2:31PM
Oby had better be careful, Glenn might go after him...I would think Oby has more skeletons in the closet than Glenn...don't start a war you can't win....Oby is already a JOKE and noboby watches him. He has no credibility. He would be easy to bring down.

BOB! have the coalition forces reached Baghdad yet?

Rush, Glenn, Sean, and Keith, Katie and Brian cannot raise anybody's taxes. They are "private citizens." I don't see what's so hard about that.

Bob| 9.8.09 @ 2:23PM
Yes, let's have more of the 'compliments' coming from the Democrats, the left of center, and beyond, regarding anyone critical of 'Our Dear Leader' and his/their agenda(s). When they don't want to debate on facts or merits their default defense is RACIST. Do they have a special codeword thesaurus?
If I am a racist, inbred toothless hillbilly, ignorant, Bible clutching, gun toting, domestic terrorist for not bowing at the alter before BHO I will gladly wear the as a badge of distinction.
Pete| 9.8.09 @ 3:11PM
It was only a matter of time until Bob brought up his "charts."
Sue| 9.8.09 @ 3:11PM
How to recognize a communist? They call others names right out of the box, they twist all facts even ones so provable as Van Jones' own words; they accuse dissenters as wanting something other than the facts while pretending that they are superior and have the "real" facts; continue to promote themselves with the acceptable term "liberals."
Bob's posts prove without a doubt, he meets all of the above, so he must, must be, must be a commie!
"Calling people names is MOSTLY a right wing activity." Well, I'll take this one: Bob, you're a commie and a commie supporter. You prove it with your posts. Thanks to Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Dick Durbin, John Murtha, and all lthe other commies who pointed out to me that "We call people names, you Nazi you! - Commie, commie, commie and commie.
Or, if Bob would prefer, looter, looter, looter, looter!
Oh, Van Jones - $30 billion looter.
Nathan| 9.8.09 @ 3:24PM
The bottom line is that Van Jones is a loon. Beck didn't take Van Jones down. Van Jones sowed the seeds for his own downfall long ago.
Frank St.Clair| 9.8.09 @ 3:36PM
If I were a pundit, I'd rather have the "idiot" Glenn Beck's numbers than Olderman's. BTW, you all keep saying Beck makes numerous factual errors, and calling him moron and idiot....how about instead of name calling you give me a list of his factual errors instead? Or is research too difficult for a dedicated leftist?

-- Glenn Beck doesn't actually write books. The words assemble themselves out of fear.
-- A picture is worth a thousand words. A Glenn Beck is worth a billion.
-- When taking the SAT, write Glenn Beck for every answer. You'll score over 8000.
-- Glenn Beck and Charles Krauthammer went into a bar. The bar was instantly destroyed as that level of awesome cannot be contained in one building.
Spudman| 9.8.09 @ 3:47PM
I find it ironic that the Olberbaby isn’t asking his two or three viewers to write or email the lies Glenn Beck “ginned” up about Jones; instead he’s asking his two or three listeners to “gin” up dirt on Beck.
Olberbaby is desperate. Why doesn’t he defend Jones’ record as a legitimate czar?
There is one reason, he can’t. So he goes after the messenger.
This will be good.
Todd| 9.8.09 @ 3:53PM
There are lies, damn lies and Bob's charts.
tonypal| 9.8.09 @ 3:57PM
Jeffrey Lord and Bob:
The question you have to ask is what else could Olbermann be looking for but private information. If it was public information, he wouldn't have to get his minions to dig up the dirt; he could simply do it himself or have his staff do the research online. The fact that he's farming out the work tells you all you need to know.
Incidentally Bob, although I don't watch Glenn Beck, it is entirely possible that someone could have a different viewpoint than you or watch a tv show that you don't like and not be an idiot. Obviously you don't agree, but when you engage in name calling, you reveal much more about yourself than your intended target of derision.
Blue Eyes| 9.8.09 @ 3:58PM
Does Olbermutt really want to get personal? All Beck has to do is gather the handful of chicks Olbermutt's slept with and let them tell the stories of how Olbermutt is hung like a paperclip.
Please go there Olbermutt.

"Bob" is a typical leftist who probably fancies himself a moderate. If I am not mistaken, it was Van Jones who fired the first salvo in the Beck/Jones war. It was a typical leftist tactic, honed to perfection by the likes of race-baiters Jackson and Sharpton. Maybe next time Van will be more careful who he picks on. Ya gotta love it when the bully gets the sand thrown back into his own face.

Bob says, "And JP, stop with this nonsense of the "MSM". Fox is, by far, the biggest cable news network. Fox IS the "MSM".
Not according to a typical nightly News viewership rating in the same prime time period:
NBC 7,860,000
ABC 7,080,000
CBS 5,390,000
FNC 2,100,000
CNN 570,000
MSNBC 213,000

FNC is maybe 10% of new content on any given night in the same time slot as its competitors. The largest cable news yes but Cable News in general and FNC in particular are dwarfed by free Network TV News in the same times.

Bob,
Apparently you don't understand the distinction that the author of this article was making between Van Jones as a government official (he didn't say a "public figure," as you seem to have interpreted him as having said) and Glen Beck as a private citizen. There's a huge difference. Jones was being paid with taxpayers' dollars and Glen Beck is not paid by the taxpayer. We should always hold our public officials to a higher standard since we pay their salaries.
Thom| 9.8.09 @ 6:01PM
“Bob” is a front for a style of warfare pioneered by Sun Tzu and taught in this country by Saul Alinskyite. He “covers with ridicule the enemy tradition” which covers about every traditional religious tenet in this country, being “average or common”, and not being able to meet one of his arbitrary academic standards, says one thing and does something completely contradictory to that (Social Libertarian and Fiscal Conservative) while voting for a Marxist President of a political party responsible for the bulk of social spending, serfdom, violence and pending bankruptcy of this nation. No real Libertarian would get within 10 miles of Barack Obama and the Democrat Party given the Libertarian’s own stated principles, Party and political platforms. What’s fiscal conservatism is there to his position when he sleeps with the enemy that will double the National debt in less than a decade? He votes against a Presidential candidate because of the VP choice which goes against any statistical basis for doing so if you look at the number of VPs that became President, ever. There is no facts and figures basis for that decision yet he demands “facts, charts, data, etc” from everyone else’s decisions. He uses facts and figures as if that alone makes something the truth of the matter. He ducks any probing questions that question his reasoning but resorts to name calling with anyone that disagrees with him in the slightest.
This is classic stuff from another time and place the poster “Bob” is probably familiar with. What the person behind this actually thinks is irreverent in the scheme of things but the method reveals the enemy you need to become familiar with because this is just the beginning of this.

G.E. has lots of skeletons in the closet, too. I think Fox has some dirt on G.E. for its potentially illegal business dealings with Iran. Perhaps Immelt pulled Dobermann off Beck. Skunks.
Now, that is something I'd really like to see investigated.

Smitty, I'd like to see who ran the dollar during the "crisis" at TARP-1 last October. That ought to be investigated, too.

Thom... X-ring. Alinsky couldn't even be bloody original. He had to "redistribute" Sun Tzu. What Bob hasn't figured out is that one can not redistribute creative intelligence. Either one has it, or one is... well, Bob.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Classic Olbermann! He is not satisfied with his own slanted, radically liberal, hyperbole about the perceived injustices of the world. Olbermann desires to shame everyone who carries an opposite view of his narcissistic values, and crush the facts that expose him for what he is...an out of touch with reality buffoon. He reminds me of the proverbial back-alley bully who goes into a fist fight and then pulls out a machete.
Olbermann is a talented writer, granted, but to give him a soap box to spew his venomous fodder, much like he did, while at KCBS, in falsely accusing a high-profile olympic athlete of taking steroids when he didn't have a shred of evidence of such, is proof that the airwaves is too powerful of a tool for "little Groucho Marx," as he was known in the 1986 Dodger clubhouse.
One of Olbermann's biggest problems is that he loves to hear himself speak; the more he does, the more he heeds clairvoyance from his imaginary liberal gods.

Dearest Keith,
It's not your fault that you have a higher moral intellect, it's just too bad not many can see the truth through the fear and hate in their so-called hearts. We appreciate your factual stories and reporting accurately what is really going on in the world. Keep up the hard work, I'm sure Ted Kennedy would be proud of you.
