There really are death panels. At least in Great Britain.
In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, a group of experts who care for the terminally ill claim that some patients are being wrongly judged as close to death.
Under NHS guidance introduced across England to help doctors and medical staff deal with dying patients, they can then have fluid and drugs withdrawn and many are put on continuous sedation until they pass away.
But this approach can also mask the signs that their condition is improving, the experts warn.
As a result the scheme is causing a "national crisis" in patient care, the letter states. It has been signed palliative care experts including Professor Peter Millard, Emeritus Professor of Geriatrics, University of London, Dr Peter Hargreaves, a consultant in Palliative Medicine at St Luke's cancer centre in Guildford, and four others.
"Forecasting death is an inexact science,"they say. Patients are being diagnosed as being close to death "without regard to the fact that the diagnosis could be wrong.
"As a result a national wave of discontent is building up, as family and friends witness the denial of fluids and food to patients."
The warning comes just a week after a report by the Patients Association estimated that up to one million patients had received poor or cruel care on the NHS.
Congress had better take several deep breaths before it passes anything. And it sure as heck needs to know what it is passing, instead of approving a 1000-page bill, sight unseen!

All we, the people, have to do now is show this to the crazed weasels running Congress and I'm sure they will do the right thing.

Bandow, what you don't say is that this is also being done in the U.S. right now -- only by insurance companies on the basis of cost. You can be dropped from a policy and not get another. You are stopped from using experimental procedures. Many policies have a financial limit. YOU don't make the decision, your insurance company makes the decision -- THEY are the "death panel".
You also don't say that your overall odds of living longer are better in the U.K. than in the U.S. We can all point to individual cases where each of the systems break down, but it is the overall statistics that are important and give perspective when adjudicating health systems. We are 37th in the world in these overall statistics and pay by far, the most.
So you, Bandow, believe that is good. I argue that this extreme expense hurts our economy by making it uncompetitive with other countries. This cost forces companies to manufacture products elsewhere and therefore limit the ability of people to earn wages. In the end, if we are uncompetitive, it doesn't make any difference which health care system we have, does it?
Lowering health care costs requires rationing. Rationing will come in the future -- it is economically impossible to do otherwise. The question is not whether rationing should be done, but how. Should it be done by insurance companies? Should it be done by the government? I would make the argument that since we vote for our leaders, they are far more responsive to the public than insurance companies.
It would be nice, Bandow, if you made a principled argument based on statistics, facts, and logic rather than scare tactics.

~ WHEN THE LAUGH OF $ATAN WA$ HEARD IN THE PEOPLE$ HALLS OF U$ CONGRE$$ ~
THIS OLD WORLD ORDER OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT OF OUR POORER AMERICANS NEEDS ENLIGHTENED POLITICAL MINDS AND HEARTS TO VIEW GOD DIFFERENTLY THEN $$$…. NO MATTER WHAT THEIR POLITICAL PARTY AFFILIATION ???
WHEN WILL OUR WEALTHY ELITE AMERICANS ABATE THEIR ASSAULT ON POORER AMERICANS WITH THEIR MONETARY CONTROL OF OUR IVORY TOWER U.S. CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER ???
THERE ARE NOT MANY MORE DISTRACTIONS LEFT WHICH ARE AVAILABLE FOR OUR WEALTHY ELITE AMERICANS TO HIDE BEHIND IN NOT TAKING PROPER CARE OF ALL OUR AMERICANS IN A HUMANE FASHION !!!
RALPH NADER ATTEMPTED TO EDUCATE AMERICAN VOTERS ABOUT U.S. CORPORATE POWER IN AMERICA AND HOW THEY CONTROL OUR CONGRESSIONAL PEOPLE THROUGH THEIR POCKET BOOK (POLITICAL DONATIONS). * WITHOUT THE DOUGH $$$ THESE U.S. CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD DO NOT GET RE~ELECTED TO CONGRESS.*TO STAY IN POLITICAL OFFICE IN AMERICA,ONE HAS TO BARTER YOUR VOTES IN CONGRESS AND REPRESENT POWER INTERESTS IN RETURN FOR THE BUCK$.
POORER AMERICANS HAVE NEVER HAD THE $$$ LOBBY TO INFLUENCE THIS CORRUPT POLITICAL CONCEPT (of horse trading political votes for political contributions) TO ACHIEVE PROPER HEALTH ~CARE OR LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR ALL OUR MIDDLE ~ CLASS AND WORKING POOR AMERICANS.
AMERICAN IVORY TOWER U.S.CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD HAVE PASSED FEDERAL LEGISLATION IN WASHINGTON DC TO SPEND 50 BILLION AMERICAN TAX $$$ ON THE INTERNATIONAL FIGHT AGAINST AIDS OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS WHILE THEIR OWN AMERICAN CITIZENS ARE BEING TOLD BY THIS SAME U.S.CONGRESS THAT NATIONAL HEALTH CARE AND PROPER LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR MIDDLE CLASS AND WORKING POOR CITIZENS IS UNAFFORDABLE.
*** WEALTHY ELITE AMERICANS (WHO ARE ONLY 1% OF OUR USA POPULATION) SADLY ALSO CONTROL HOW OUR U.S.CONGRESS SPENDS THEIR BUDGET TRILLION$ AND HAVE OBVIOUSLY FOUND MORE WORTHY INTERNATIONAL CITIZENS THEN OUR OWN DESPERATE AND NEEDY POOR TO ASSIST !!!
~Poorer Americans Nationwide only get 400 million $$$ per year for legal representation allocated them by CONGRESS~
Middle Class and Working Poor Americans are unable to afford proper legal representation in their Civil, Criminal and Family Courts of law all across America causing tremendous hardships nationwide, but these great minds and callous hearts in our American Congress have found others Worldwide more needy then their own citizens who are being falsely incarcerated, wrongfuly executed, losing their homes or apartments, losing child custody or visitation with their children etc
Not being afforded proper legal representation by our U.S. Congress has created a total breakdown of the American judicial system for our poorer Americans because the our U.S. Courts punish all of us little people if we are not assisted with proprer legal counsel.*It is a known fact that our average Middle Class and Working Poor Americans without proper legal representation in all of our American Courts of law lose their legal cases to the better financed who are able to afford lawyers.
Lawyers For Poor Americans is now actively in the hunt for International Countries and Leaders Worldwide to help raise 5 Billion Dollar$ for our slighted poorer Americans who have had their own American Congress turn their backs on their desperate needs in not affording them proper legal representation.
Troy Davis and Mumia Abu ~ Jamal are 2 perfect examples of American citizens who never had proper legal representation or defense investigations afforded them by our U.S. Congressional Leaders Of The Free World in their initial criminal trials in (Georgia and Pennsylvania) who might very well have to pay the ultimate price of possibly being completely innocent and falsely executed in the near future.
These two poorer Americans are among tens of thousands of legal cases nationwide that never were afforded proper legal representation or proper defense investigations at their initial trials……**We the public really have no idea if these men are innocent or guilty until they both are given fair legal representation at their new future trials.
Improper murder trials take place in Third World Countries all the time. *** Why should average Middle~Class and Working Poor Americans in the Wealthiest Country Of The World be treated as if they are living a Third World Life Style ??
This is the first of many www International pleas by Lawyers For Poor Americans for other leaders and countries to help raise the needed monie$ to correct these blatant injustices that have been inflicted on poorer Americans for the last few decades.
Lawyers For Poor Americans has many other written articles that can be viewed with any www search engine by our name or our telephone number.
Lawyers For Poor Americans is a www lobby group of volunteers that sing out about the decades old neglect, abuse and injustices being inflicted on our poorer Americans that have become Crimes Against Humanity issues for the International World Court to investigate.

Is it not a insult to “crazed weasels” to be compared to the Democratic party members in Congress. I may be wrong, but I have never known even the craziest of weasels to eat anything unseen like the Congress did with the recent Obama-care and Stimulus Bills.

Bob , you ignorant slut; Healthcare is a right! You can't ration a right.

The claim that America spends more and gets less in healthcare should be corrected as follows.
Other countries do not have our expensive tort system.
Other countries parasite our research.
Other countries ration care by denying stents, bypasses, hip and knee replacements, expensive drugs etc for elderly. They don't have expensive equipment available without long waits.
Our life expectancy at older ages is one of the best. It is infant mortality that lowers our expectancy. Survival rates for people diagnosed with cancer and heart disease is better in the U.S. than most countries. Big shots from these other countries come here for difficult treatments.
If an insurance company unjustly denies care it can face an expensive judgement. If medicare denies treatment you can ask for better decision but you must deal with the government. If all care comes from the government they can just arbitrarily change the rules. A recent article reported the U>K> just ordered certain surgeries reduced by 15%. Tough, if you need it.
The preliminary bill from the house includes severe penalties on Drs and hospitals that offer care outside the proscribed limits. You won't be able to pay for it yourself, if this goes through.

Tim - your argument is based entirely on your opinion. Health care is not a right - you will not find that in the Declaration or Constitution. If you wish to place it in the context of a religious right, you must identify the specifics as to where it can be found. What health care right is there for a 1,000 pound man who has gorged himself over his years while his neighbors have perhaps lived in poverty? Repetition of liberal and Democrat nonsense is not appealing and is -- nonsense. Get the Constitution changed and I may go for it. That's a "may." In Norwood Canada, where health care has been made a "right," there is a weekly drawing by the mayor's office to see who get to see the local doc. What do you think might be wrong with this? Shortage of money, docs, access, rights, death panel, life panel, abortionists? One could say that a shortage of abortionists brought this on, but that would not be politically correct. Has anyone calculated the abortions in with the rest of American's life and death statistics - as in how long do Americans live versus those in ______ .
Bob| 9.3.09 @ 6:12PM
jr -- when you say that health care is a privilege, there is baggage that comes along with that. You are also saying that if you cannot afford it, you don't get it. That means you're all right with people who can't afford care, or whose benefits have been totally used, dying. If you think the government should cover these people, then you actually believe health care is a right, not a privilege.
I have a problem with people who call themselves "pro-life" and don't think health care is a right. That is totally inconsistent. You can be "anti-abortion" however and believe that health care is a privilege. I happen to believe that health care is a privilege, not a right -- but that is consistent with my pro-choice positions.
Kelley| 9.3.09 @ 6:14PM
Health care is definitely not a right. Anyone can get health care in the USA even the illegals. Walk into any ER and they are obligated under law to treat you. We have free clinics in every city in every state for those who do not have private insurance. Obama wants to rule this country in every aspect of our being. I personally have relatives in Canada and England who have been waiting many many months for health care or to be seen by a specialist. Do not deign to tell me it is better over there. It is NOT. We do need reform that is absolutely true but start by fixing what is wrong with our present system. Do the democrats want tort reform, of course they don't. There was a perfectly good health plan offered by the other side in May. Did it ever see the light of day - no it certainly did not. Democrats immediately shot it down as not being liberal enough. I cannot wait to get them all booted out of DC.
