More and more shortcomings, and downright hazards, of compact fluorescent light bulbs keep appearing (lighting designer Howard Brandston relates some of the more annoying practical problems in today’s Wall Street Journal).  Rasmussen found a whopping 18% of Americans think the government should tell us what light bulbs to use; yet the Gore/Waxman/Markey push for more government mandates in legislation and regulation marches on.  Al Gore is no Romeo, and Henry Waxman is certainly no Juliet!

Gored By Bull
By Asher Embry

What bulb in yonder fixture breaks?
The mercury inside it makes
A toxic mess upon your floor
Which you can simply not ignore.
So you must call the EPA,
To cart those deadly shards away.

And if you get the bulbs to work,
They may last minutes ‘cause a quirk
An engineer chose not to fix
Because the global politics
Demanded green bulbs way too fast
Regardless of how long they’d last.

The moral here is plain to see.
This climate change hypocrisy,
Imposing Al Gore’s twisted view
Of what we should and shouldn’t do.
Though claiming righteous benefit,
These bulbs don’t really save a whit.

Misguided legislation thrives.
It won’t improve our daily lives.

I switched many of the incandesant bulbs in my house for CFLs a couple of years ago. My electric bill dropped by enough to pay for the new bulbs in a few months, and not one of them has failed yet. Mostly you have to get a quality brand, the real el-cheapos will take forever to come to full brightness. Also, use them where they are going to be left on for some time, not for momentary use like in a closet. All that said, congress has no business telling us what to screw in to our light sockets, and I'm stocking up on incandesants for use in my outdoor applications, and in my barn which is unheated.

How about those LED bulbs? Never heard of them? That's because they don't contain mercury, use less than 1 watt of electricity, and they last forever. Shove it up your arse, Gore.

Led bulbs are wonderful as they use 1/100 of the power of a incandescent bulb for the same amount of light. However they should not be used for general illumination. Led's use a obscure clause in Quantum Dynamics to convert electricity to light. As a result Led's even “White Light” leds emit a narrow bands of light which make objects look unnatural. Incandescent and fluorescent bulbs emit a wide spectra band of light which matches sunlight. Led bulbs do not.

Until recently cost was a issue with Led bulbs. Led bulbs use 1/100 the power and therefor 1/100 the cost of electricity but at 100 times the price per bulb. Now they are being massed produced and the cost per bulb is dropping. Unfortunately the new Led bulbs still can not match the luminosity of a standard bulb. In short a Led bulb is useful where power cost is a issue and color matching and luminosity is not.

Wonder what Al Gore's cut of all this nonsense is? He couldn't be doing this for mere MONEY, could he?

Well...I'm glad that c.j. (up-thread) has had some good luck with those damned bulbs because I haven't.

I replaced EVERY bulb in my house (inside and out) with those damned CFL things.

They cost 10 times as much and last one-third as long. My electric bill DID go down, though. At least, I think it did. It's hard to read the bill by the dim light given off by those frickin' bulbs!

Plus...you can't (in good conscience) just throw them out! They have to be taken to a recycle center. WTF!?!?
Oh ...and just try to put 10 or 15 of the damn things in a box or bag for transport. They're light bulbs! They're more delicate than eggs! One moron cuts you off in his Prius and your entire SUV is filled with mercury vapor!

Good grief....I hate "liberals".

Ya know, it’s not just the darn light bulbs, but I haven’t had a decent shower at home in years due to the restricted flow shower heads forced upon me by Congress - I was on the road last week at an older hotel with no such restrictions and basked in the blast of an antediluvian device which brought back fond memories of high school showers after soccer practice, but I digress. Furthermore, on a strictly personal level, it peeves me to have to operate my stupid “low flush” toilet several times in order to achieve the same effect as my old traditional commode – for which I also have to thank Congress. Couldn’t someone run for President on a pro-flush, pro-light, pro-deluge platform?
