On the main site, I argue that the Republicans are starting to reap the political benefits of being the party out of power at a time when a lot of Americans aren't happy with the way things are going. For an alternative viewpoint, you can read Harold Meyerson on the incredible shrinking GOP and Joe Klein on the Republicans as a party of nihilists.

Meyerson's article is classic PC cultural Marxism. Black identity politics is healthy and to be expected. Ditto Hispanic identity politics. But heaven forbid we have any white identity politics. And especially if any of those people practicing it are Southern White males. Diversity is de facto good and legitimizing. Whiteness is de facto bad and a reason for suspicion.
I hope more conservatives are picking up on this game. It is transparently obvious.

The Dems are throwing everything at the GOP but the kitchen sink. Klein and Myerson are just doing what they consider thier duty as propagandists for the Democrats.
One thing they failed to mention is that Obama, Pelosi, and Reid do not need one GOP vote to get ObamaCare passed. As President Obama reminded the GOP back in February: "I won!". Many Democrats (Myerson included) remind the GOP almost daily that they are just a bunch of irrelevant Bitter Klingers whose only appeal is to a few racists districts and states in the Deep South (In Myerson's own words, "You've lost Wall St and Suburbia."). Klein continues this theme and builds on it by attacking Palin and calling the GOP nothing but nihilists (talk about projection).
Politically, the Dems rhetoric does not match thier deeds. If the GOP is so irrelevant, if Palin is so unhinged (Death Panels! The nerve of her!), why the panic in the Oval Office? Why the panic in the cloak rooms? Pelosi and her minions would not allow one GOP represenative to add one line to ObamaCare, and the Senate made it plain that it would pass ObamaCare before the year's end, no matter what Grassely thought; Reid had the votes, and failing that, they have the budget reconcilliation option. Who cares what the GOP wants? No, something is not quite right, and for the first time in 2 years one can sense fear coming out of the entire Democratic organization. And for once, the GOP has nothing to do with it.
James, you are perfectly correct in thinking that the GOP can profit the Democrat's overreach. However, I seriously doubt that the current crop of GOP Senators are the people to do it (Lugar, Snow, Collins, Linday Gramm, and Grassley do not elicit confidence). The House is another story, but the current Minority Leader Boehner is nothing but an operator. Niether McConnel nor Boehner strike me as bold, thoughtful leaders who are willing to take chances. They value thier own carerrs too much. There will be no 2010 Contract with America with these guys.
My biggest fear is that the Senate GOP members will lose thier nerve (how long will they be willing to take the editorial blows from the Times and Post?), and some kind of ObamaCare deal (probably the Co-ops Trojan Horse)will be cut in October or November. Ditto for Cap and Trade.
If that happens, Katie Bar the Door. Niether the Democratic Party nor the GOP will be the same.

Meyerson said little more than what David Frum, Jeb Bush and other "conservatives" have been saying since November 2008- conservatives must accept their demise and move left. like David Cameron's Tories. Klein is more on the mark with regards to "nihilism." He would have been more accurate by saying that Republicans reject the Obama universe and are willing to wreck havoc rather than have the Obama universe succeed. I would call that a positive.
Republicans will succeed only when the Democrats fail and the Republicans reject the neo-conservatives Wilsonian foreign policy which led to election disaster in 2006 and 2008.
louis tully| 8.20.09 @ 12:59PM
Unhappiness with Ochavez does not = GOP success, necessarily.
To profit from Obamas' falling fortunes, the GOP will have to make some changes. The Bush / McCain crew are finished and cannot lead the GOP back.

Mr. Antle - it's a bit misleading to offer up articles by Klein and Meyerson as contrary views of GOP standing. They could (and may well have) written these articles years, or decades, ago. They're democrat partisans, which is fine, and have interests/biases/angles/perceptions accordingly. Again, all fine and known. But, not exactly conflicting opinions from GOP or conservative analysts, which I believe was the intention.
Finally, I've seen very little evidence of any large shift in the centuries old alignment of American politics - roughly 1/3 right, 1/3 middle, 1/3 left, with a natural lean to the right. Reagan moved the needle for the GOP noticeably up, while FDR did the same for the democrats.
If anything, the democrats are in danger of losing their share to the middle. The 2008 election was only noteworthy in being the first since, say, Ike, which was either a blowout nor tight, but simply clear. Perhaps Clinton in 96, but even then Perot was still there to murk things up.
I expect the MSM to be "shocked" by the GOP resurgence in new england in 2010, and surprised by some scattered results from, say, Oregon, Illinois, Michigan, Pa. and so on. All of which will be perfectly normal. Same goes for democrat gains in the south, and even Texas (they have to win there sometime).
JohnnySquares| 8.20.09 @ 1:30PM
I agree with Louis to a certain extent. But now is not the time for the GOP to hop in bed with the Dems and "try and get something done." They are clearly suffering as a result of their own actions, so why get involved.
Now is a time for the GOP to get organized and to tap the rage at the local level, the remaining GOP house/senate members should be holding their own town halls. And they should conduct public readings of this monstrosity HR3200.

NO RINOS!! NO MORE DEMOCRAT LITE!
Interested Con: Latest Gallup voter poll results were 40% Conservatives and 20% Liberals--with 40% making up the moderates or the middle.
It was reported this past week that Conservatives now outnumber Liberals in all 50 states.
We must offer a TRUE alternative and nominate CONSERVATIVES; especially with the Democrat's bumbling incompetence now on display!
Bob| 8.20.09 @ 2:24PM
Daisy, at least half of the Democrats believe they are "conservative". Blue Dogs are "conservative" Democrats. That title is meaningless. Almost all of the "conservative" Democrats are pro-choice and favor gay marriage. You have to look at the underlying questions. For example, people may say they are "pro-life" but think Roe v. Wade is just fine when they are asked the more detailed question.
What YOU are calling "conservatives", only represent about 18% of voters according to the polling results from the last election. Rush Limbaugh only reaches 4.7% of all voters. Most blacks will say they are conservative but will vote almost entirely for Democrats. That is also true for 2/3rds of Hispanics. Demographics are destiny -- get used to it.
Daisy| 8.20.09 @ 2:54PM
More irrelevant Bob BS. If we stay true to our Conservative ideals we will wipe the floor up with the Democrats in 2010 and 2012.
Democrats' embarrassing incompetence and mean spirited stupidity have made it clear to Americans that Liberals CANNOT govern! Love it.
Keep it up Conservatives--storm the Town Halls!!

"Almost all of the "conservative" Democrats are pro-choice and favor gay marriage"
Bob, you need to correct that statement. Almost all of the Blue Dogs who ran in as Pro Life, Pro Family, and Pro Guns. I admit some didn't focus on gays and abortion; however, Rahm Emmanual was very careful to pick Pro Life Dems in order to flank the GOP from the Right (Personally, I thought it was a brilliant strategy). The assumption was that once in office, Pelosi and Hoyer would crack the proverbial whip and they would fall in line.
Bob| 8.20.09 @ 4:55PM
JP -- you are correct. But as I understand it, most of them support Roe. Correct me if I am wrong on this.
Daisy| 8.20.09 @ 7:23PM
Bob, don't pretend you didn't know about the Blue Dogs. You lie all of the time and we are used to it.
Why do you think I always diss you, moron?
