Depression Era Returns to NC

Beverly Perdue, a Democratic governor with one of the lowest (if not the lowest) approval ratings in the country, has posted a series of Q&A videos in which she addresses concerns of her North Carolina constituents. Today, in her answer to a public school teacher who complains about state budget cutbacks which has led to teacher assistant firings, Perdue said this year's "toughest budget challenge" was "maybe even as tough as what happened in the Great Depression."

Undoubtedly she was just "emotionalizing" the issue -- so much more palatable than "exaggerating" or "lying."

How many of us boomers grew up in a classroom with teacher's assistants? I didn't.

The elementary school I attended has changed : (a) class size has been reduced (b) pay adjusted for inflation has been substantially increased and retirement age reduced (c) achievement levels are slightly lower (d ) there were 17 classrooms and 18 staff members (e) an addition added 1 classroom and several multipurpose rooms (f) 27 additional staff have been added (g) reductions of proposed staffing increases at budget meetings are termed draconian cuts Conclusion: Massive reduction nationwide in K-12 system employment is appropriate

jay, my wife is a teachers aide in special ed at a small urban school district in texas. when she first started this job she was responsible for some kids that had mild behavioral problems that kept them out of the classroom for part of the day. over the past three years or so, due to no child left behind she has kids, some as young as three years old, in diapers, so mentally handicapped that they don't know where they are under her charge. she gets paid an additional $20 a month for changing diapers. sound like the school where we went when we were in elementary? me neither. on top of everything else the district has to send out a special bus to pick up and deliver home these kids. if you volunteer for this bus duty you get extra pay. all of this came about during the bush administration. compassionate conserveatism don't you know.
