CBS News, the TV network of disgraced former anchor Dan Rather, doesn't even pretend anymore to not be siding with Big Government instead of backing the right of patients to choose their own healthcare. (Of course, it would be better yet if CBS just reported the news instead of cheering for one side or the other.)
Noel Sheppard of NewsBusters reports that blogger Charles Cooper, an editor for CBSNews.com, referred to opponents and skeptics of ObamaCare at a townhall meeting using the derogatory term "teabaggers."
Not surprisingly, Cooper's blog posts are fairly consistently idiotic.
If the people who ran CBS had any integrity they would fire Cooper immediately. Let him fulminate and agitate against the ordinary Americans he despises somewhere else, such as maybe DailyKos, where he would seem fairly moderate by comparison to the kooks who post on and operate that site.

CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, NYT, LAT, WaPo and Daily Kos ARE ALL THE SAME, Matt. They all belong to Soros. They protected and lied for Obama and that's how the Marxist Community Organizer got elected.
Liberal Reader| 8.8.09 @ 7:50PM
If the American Spectator had any integrity it would descry the inflammatory rhetoric accompanying much of the "skepticism" towards health care reform to which you refer.
Corporate shills masquerading as grass roots organizations are feeding downright lies to people about the nature of legislation being considered. These lies include the notion that the bills in Congress would mandate euthanasia, abortion, and even sex change operations!
Furthermore, right wing pundits and columnists -- including you, Mr. Vadum -- have resorted to rash, completely irresponsible rhetoric about the president and the Democrats, including explicit claims that the Democrats are "fascists" or Nazis. Limbaugh's insane rant this week, which was riddled with factual errors and distortions, was only one example of this deeply un-American language.
Ultimately this language opens to the door to political violence, and I'm no longer convinced that political violence is something people on the right -- including Limbaugh -- would consider unwelcome or "off the table."
To kill a fascist is a time-honored duty of any American; our fathers and grandfathers died by the hundreds of thousands fighting them in Europe.
By attempting to appropriate that great, noble mission -- undertaken against Republican objections -- in service of opposition to a health care reform act is contemptible and wrong, and by even tacitly encouraging violence against the government, or assassination of the president, this language is complicit in what would be acts of terrorism.
Even more shameful still is that these lawless town hall mobs actually disrupt the forum in which citizens who might wish to voice concern or rational skepticism about these bills can speak, thus depriving them of their right to express political views to their representatives.
We all know what's going on here. The right has made a simple, and in my view accurate, calculation.
If debate on health care is sober, rational, civil, and genuinely democratic, the people will move toward reform. It might not be the reform I'd most want, but some kind of reform would be enacted.
This is unacceptable to the right, and so they have determined that at any cost they will intimidate, frustrate, interrupt, and even threaten those who would engage in that process.
KevlarKevin| 8.8.09 @ 8:03PM
Descry?
Liberal Reader| 8.8.09 @ 8:23PM
Nice question, Kevlar.
"Descry" is a rich word.
If I'm not mistaken, its etymology leads back to the Old French "descrier," meaning "to call out, to observe" but also to accuse, or uncover (as an "injurious revelation").
In middle and modern English it carried these meanings, although most modern usage is whittled down to the idea of observing or recognizing. Shakespeare's usage -- always authoritative -- often carried with it the sense of accusing something to be harmful.

Liberal Reader:
You, like so many other statists, rail against the people attending these townhall meetings as being members of a mob, disrupting the proceedings. Obviously, you are deeply concerned with what's going on and find it offensive.
Perhaps, what you really find most offensive is the fact that the right is starting to throw the left's tactics back in the left's face. You guys are experts at disrupting speech. Recall the Minutemen being shouted down at Columbia University (don't care what you think of them - they have free speech rights). How about the rash of pie throwing incidents at various colleges across the country, with conservative speakers being assaulted by frustrated liberal prop comics.
If we go back further in time, wasn't it the left that shut down college campuses in the 60's as a form of protest? The bottom line is that your side has a long, rich history of disrupting the free speech of those with whom you disagree. Now that you're getting a dose of your own medicine, you don't like it. Well here's a little hint for what's to come: The more people like you whine about it, the more you will encourage us. In fact, for the first time in my life, I will be attending a townhall in NJ on August 26th. Can't wait to let loose. Thanks for the encouragement.

Liberal Reader:
Horse waste.
We all want "reform", my definition of "reform", however, is the polar opposite of Obama's.
Only dishonest spinning, bordering on lying, depicts the debate as being over whether or not there should be "reform". The debate is over the size and scope of government. Obama believes government's control over healthcare should go from being directly responsible for 50% and massively interfering in the rest, to being directly responsible for 70% or more and interfering even further in the rest.
Conservatives want the opposite reform, where government interference and government control and government taxation, become LESS important.
Liberal Reader| 8.8.09 @ 8:43PM
Roy --
Your understanding of "government control" is not accurate.
First, government is already involved. If you receive health insurance at work, you're receiving tax free income. For some, that income can mean as much as 40,000 dollars a year. The government is essentially subsidizing that coverage.
The government also picks up the 100 billion dollar a year tab for the uninsured, people who either choose not to get coverage or who are to poor to afford it.
The Congress is considering a public option that would accept ANYONE. It is estimated that 3-4 million people would join: that is, about one percent of the population.
How is that government "control" of health care.
Listen, the Republicans AND their "free market" approach had SIX YEARS to lead us to the Promised Land. The result? 14,000 people a day losing coverage and price skyrocketing so fast they'll BUST this country in 10 years.
If we don't do something about that, we're screwed.
Any ideas? If so, please send them to your representative (politely), because we sure as hell need them.
Liberal Reader| 8.8.09 @ 8:44PM
CORRECTION:
The government picks up MUCH OF the 100 billion dollar a year tab -- but not ALL of it. Some is paid by charities or by providers themselves. Credit where credit's due.

LT/Jeremiah is a hack! He said that we need ObamaCare because everyday 14,000 Americans lose their insurance coverage. What LR/J didn't say is that those 14,000 Americans a day are losing their jobs because of Obama's economic policies.
Almost 3 million Americans have lost their jobs since Obama took office in January. Number of job losses are: Feb 09--651,000/Mar--663,000/Apr--539,000/May--345,000/June--443,000/July--247,000.
These figures do not include the 750,000 unemployed who've slipped off the books in July, those who have stopped looking for work and those who are now working part time.
Did Obama make the fiscal crisis worse so that the greater numbers of unemployed would demand health insurance from the government?
Like the suspiciously prescient political hack, Rahm Emanuel stated, "Don't waste a good crisis." Sounds kind of FISHY to me, kind of Alinskyish.

So far the ONLY political violence at the healthcare townhalls has been committed by people on the left, especially Democrats and union thugs. And the left is using violent imagery, e.g. urging activists et al to hit back twice as hard.
The left accuses the right of the same things that the left is doing while inciting other leftists to violence. So far it's not working.

I agree w/MV: the aggression is coming from the "winning" side. Noonan seems to be getting it too, now. Better late than never. She said some of the protestors who are being called Nazis look like they might have actually fought the Nazis.
The Right has begun to use the Left's tactics; albeit with representatives who are cleaner, neater and who can make both love and war.
Boisterous enthusiastic dissent is in this Nation's DNA. Pressure should be kept up. We need really good polemic too. Not nasty; ironic first, derisive, second.
Don't know if this was already linked by Mr. Klein? I scanned one of his pieces earlier in the week, so you may have already had a look-see. But in case you didn't, this is a very important speech to listen to. Contrary to the aphorism, this great Brit sees in America not an eternal interest, but an eternal friend. He has affection for US and for our Founding, and doesn't want to see us become "less American." May we take his words to heart.
Hannan's speeches are great because they deal in practice and not theory. A Buddhist friend of mine was told by his Sensei that "everything was in the balls." Hannan's language, both direct and profound, is fine example of this. He's a very well-educated man. One with a profound respect for History and continuity. He knows, we all know, what is presently being advanced legislatively is not hale. Hell, it's probably not even been read.
This is an old, old argument. The one that says life has become too complicated for citizens to govern themselves. Reagan touched on this in one of his speeches. But this is an autocratic and despotic notion whose radices reach way back to antiquity. Americans instinctively reject this; most especially the vibrant, self-reliant, middle-class. It's that rejection you're seeing at these Town Hall meetings.
We are the United States of America, and we don't do maudlin, defeated, enervating autocracy.
Maybe now we'll understand the importance of a healthy, vigorous and self-defended minority.
Over at NRO this week, John Derbyshire wrote that while he couldn't offer attribution, and ventured the guess that it was Voegelin, he recalled the following: "Left-liberalism is a Christian heresy. Communism is a Jewish heresy and fascism is a pagan heresy." We find ourselves in the early stages, thus still able to reject the governing philosophy, that renders everything possible by the rise of an unmoored humanism. Neibhur, whatever good intentions, is a great friend to both the first heresy and the third.

A clarification because late last night I wrote something that was unclear. (Unclear pronoun references tend to muck things up.)
I wrote above: "The left accuses the right of the same things that the left is doing while inciting other leftists to violence. So far it's not working. "
What I meant was the left is inciting leftists to violence but so far the strategy (the "it" referenced) is not working in the sense that it is not helping the left advance its cause in healthcare. So far the approach is backfiring.

The Baggers are the ones who are frustrated.
Like I said, the tea-bag / birther suite of resentful fringe-dwelling, tin-foil hat-wearing, black-helicopter-fearing, race-baiting hysterics KNOW that a sober, rational public debate on health care reform will ultimately give Obama a huge victory.
So, they've decided to thwart the attempt of people to have that debate. They'll howl, they'll chant, they'll call names and taunt, they'll threaten, cojole, and do anything they can to stop reasonable public discourse about this issue.
If they're Rush Limbaugh or Matthew Vadum they'll use language that may even insight the wing-nuts to violence.
I don't think it's going to work. Those job numbers the other day, which must've been deeply disappointing to many of you, may suggest a growing dynamism in the economy. If Obama gets some street-cred on domestic policy, they'll get health care.
And you know what?
NO POLITICIAN, no matter how much noise they're willing to make about "socialized medicine," is willing to campaign against Medicare.
The reason? Warts and all, Medicare is hugely popular. It's deeply flawed, but NOT ONE SINGLE REPUBLICAN will publicly speak against it, because if he did, his constituents would fire him -- or worse.
Same will be true if they pass this public option. It'll be popular, and it'll work.

When I told them what I thought about their candidates without insulting them personally, the person on the other end went ballistic, unloading a dumpster full of expletives into my phone.
I then countered with one small slur, just one, to put her in her place, even though I am a member of the same minority, and hung up.
5 minutes later someone else called my answering machine and threatened to get the guys and come over and kick my ass. For 3 minutes this violent rant went on, with the original caller whimpering in the background. At least that caller was temporarily useless for calling anyone else with her vile tongue.
Also, as far as I am concerned, the tactics that Liberal Reader accuses conservatives of using have been the socialist, far left tactic for decades. The only reason they accuse us of it is they find it hard for independent people to act on ther own behalf instead of being sheep that must be organised and paid.
