Ramesh Ponnuru asks
a relevant question: Will those you criticized Palin also
criticize Martinez? In the case of yours truly, YES. But
with the same caveat I offered then: If a public official faces a
private family crisis (or extreme family challenge), then by all
means resignation is acceptable. Families come first. And if
there is a major ethical problem or scandal, then resignation is
a good idea. (Also, leaving office early for a promotion is okay;
nobody should be denied a promotion.)
But unless one of those conditions apply, then I think it is a
clear abdication of duty to leave elected office early. We don't
know yet what the truth is about Martinez. But if he is getting
out just because he's sick of the job, or for some other elsser
reason, then he's a quitter and is exhibiting bad character. Such
a resignation is inexcusable.
I hope it becomes a trend, especially in the World's Most
Debilitated Body. At least Mel goes out on a high note. Senators?

The reason Martinez will get much less criticism is because
nobody cares if he is in office or not.

Could it be that Senator Martinez was pushed into the job in
order to keep Kathelyn Harris out? Remember famed former Florida
Secretary of State (big hair and lashes) who took a beating when
she certified W's victory back in 2001? She ran and won a House
seat I believe. And then she made a run for the Senate. W and Jeb
were none too pleased, and pushed Martinez into the race. I don't
know if she could have won, but I think the RNC and Bush WH
thought she would get beaten. The whole thing was kind of
unseemly. She did after-all risked her reputation and became the
butt of late night TV jokes. In any event, it could be that
Martinez never wanted the job and just wishes to get out of the
Beltway.

Mel has represented the liberals. Open borders, full immigration,
bailouts, voted for Sotomay--or, among many other crimes against
freedom and our Constitution. Good riddance, but probably only to
be replaced by another boot-licker. Jorge Bush even made the
clown into a special chief-in-charge of the Republican Party
nuts.

Why is everyone so upset about a politician leaving office? If
the constituents understand and are not all bent out of shape,
why should opinion writers be? I don't hear any calls from the
state of Florida for Martinez to stick it out, so I won't be
calling for it. Besides, if a person hates his job and wants to
leave it behind to do something else, then so be it. The republic
will not fall because a governor in Alaska or a senator from
Florida leaves a political office behind and does something else
for a while.

Martinez is a Bush Republican and he [and all of them] need to
go. The RP has been effectively destroyed by these so-termed
moderates; and it's now time to re-claibrate the party along
truly conservative lines. We can start with the Martinezs,
Snowes, Grahams,etc, beginning in 2010!!!!!!!!!
Yes, he is a quiter like Palin. He was elected for a full term.
We know that things did not go well for him in the Senate. Now,
he is making things easier for Mr. Christ who has demonstrated
his lack of comminment to govern. I did not vote for Mr. Bush as
our previous Governor, but, he worked his heart out and deserves
our respects and admiration. Christ does not have the charisma,
desire, or qualities to govern. He should not be elected as our
new Senator.
