The latest poll ratings suggest that many Republicans have turned negative towards Gov. Sarah Palin after her surprise resignation announcement. Reports CNN:
A majority of Americans think Sarah Palin is stepping down as Alaska's governor for political reasons, according to a new national poll, with a majority of Republicans now saying that they do not believe that Palin would be an effective president.
Only 33 percent of Republicans questioned in a CBS News survey released Monday night say that Palin would have the ability to serve effectively as president. Last fall, 71 percent of registered Republicans felt that way.
"It's unclear whether the change in Republicans' view of Palin is the result of her decision to step down as governor, or whether the GOP rank-and-file felt they had to defend their party's vice-presidential nominee during the campaign but don't feel the same tug of party loyalty today," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Either way, this is bad news for Palin, whose first task in 2012, if she runs for the White House, will be to convince Republican primary voters to support her."
It will be interesting to see how these numbers move if she stays involved in politics. Voters have proved willing to forgive many things over time, but quitting the governorship prematurely might prove to be a tougher sell if she runs for president.

that should be a plus, she is no BushDole.
Richard Baker| 7.14.09 @ 8:13PM
If she's so detestable then why is she so in demand as a fund-raiser and speaker? CBS News doesn't exactly have much of a reputation for integrity, these days, nor should anyone have much faith in polling data, regardless. Remember what Mark Twain said, "There are 3 kinds of lies. Lies, damn lies, and statistics".

The CBS poll sounds like a product of the Dan Rather School of Fact Fabrication.
How can anyone take this seriously when a number of other polls have been released since the resignation announcement showing strong support for Palin among Republicans. This is utter nonsense. Some of the rest of the numbers quoted make sense, but not this specific item, which of course is being used to headline the report. Someone needs to look at the poll internals and question wording.
DaMav| 7.14.09 @ 8:43PM
Here we go with an example. Gallup, immediately after the resignation found 72% of Republicans very or somewhat likely to vote for Palin for President.

Yes, the question is slightly different from that ostensibly asked by the CBS poll. But hardly enough to explain the huge quantitative difference in response.
Terri| 7.14.09 @ 8:44PM
The CBS poll was weighed in favor of Democraps, and who counts a poll from the Continuous Barack Service anyway? T

Yeah....like getting out of political office for self-serving "political reasons" is sooo much worse than staying IN political office for self-serving "political reasons".

LOL. When a poll shows rising support for Republicans, righties jump all over it and trumpet it from the mountaintops as proof that they're in the majority. When a poll shows declining support for Republicans, righties dismiss it as lies and propaganda from the "liberal media." Time to accept reality, guys. Palin appealed to a large minority of zealous Americans before she resigned, but now, many of those former supporters have had second thoughts. But there are still enough zealous supporters who will pay to see her speak. Most people don't like Rush Limbaugh either, but enough do to make him the top radio talker.

LOL. When a poll shows rising support for Obama, lefties jump all over it and trumpet it from the mountaintops as proof that they're in the majority. When a poll shows declining support for Obama, lefties dismiss it as lies and propaganda from the "right wing noise machine." Time to accept reality, folks. Obama appealed to a large minority of zealous Americans before his ratings started tanking, but now, many of those former supporters have had second thoughts. But there are still enough zealous supporters who will pay to see him run again. Most people don't like Al Franken either, but enough do to make him the Senator from Minnesota.
Yes, that seems more realistic.
Thank you though for sharing your fantasies with the board. It would have been better if you had used paragraphs or come up for air.

@Basil:
I had considered someone would use that comeback, but then I thought, naah, no one would be dumb enough to do that. Why? Because the comparison isn't valid. Liberals live in this place called "reality," and as such, we generally trust the MSM more than conservatives, and we've seen the accuracy of predictive polling and know that the same basic methodologies are used for opinion polling. No, we don't accuse polls of being part of the "right wing noise machine," because most polling firms use sound sampling methodologies. By contrast, this delusion that polls are untrustworthy is rampant within the right wing.
As for the rest: Obama appealed to and still appeals to a majority, not a minority, or have you been in a coma since March of 2008 and unable to see the polling? As for Franken, more people liked him than Coleman, and that's all that counts in an election.
Thanks for demonstrating how illogical and reality-challenged right wingers can be. It would have been better if you not wasted your entire post on a cute, but ineffective, comeback.

she may be finished, or perhaps not, only a Newtonian futurist would hazard a 'prediction' (wild guess);
but her career could end up being a counterbalance to the BushDoleMcCain school of brutally-professional-but-still-losing unelectoral politics.

Mr. Bandow, with respect, as the conservative and libertarian elements continue to abandon the Party... and as CNN [cough] tolerant Republicans respond to it's polls... seriously, one would expect the poll to show strong Palin support? The only thing "unclear " about the poll is whether there are enough credulous buyers.
I'm with Tammy Bruce on Palin. Sarah has lit a fire that CNN - The Most Rusted Name In News - isn't going to put out with wishful "polling."
Max| 7.14.09 @ 11:49PM
You guys posted a CBS poll to validate your view of Palin ... CBS???? and then use CNN as secondary source... Wll I can tell you I have been tracking this since July 3rd & Gov Palin is doing very well ... Of course you know this ... why eles would you post this or MoveOn.org e-mailing donors to mount a counter attack on Palin ... Lets face it you guys have another horse in the race and she is a threat to the estalishment in DC wgich means YOU

Not really, it's just that your side has nothing new to say. I seem to read a variation of your screed many times each day. Yes, we get it, you finally won.
Is it too much to throw some style, proper sentence construction, even some logic into your prose?
I don't want you to be like the other Neanderthals from the Left who post here; I think you have promise. If you need help, there are lots of government funds available.
Do better. You'll thank me/us for it later.

Well, we know you can't think on your own and your reading comprehension is probably worse but you better read Mort Zuckerman's article in the WSJ.
Some of his points:
- No fewer than 1.4 million people wanted or were available for work in the last 12 months but were not counted. Why? Because they hadn't searched for work in the four weeks preceding the survey.
- The number of workers taking part-time jobs due to the slack economy, a kind of stealth underemployment, has doubled in this recession to about nine million, or 5.8% of the work force. Add those whose hours have been cut to those who cannot find a full-time job and the total unemployed rises to 16.5%, putting the number of involuntarily idle in the range of 25 million.
- The average work week for rank-and-file employees in the private sector, roughly 80% of the work force, slipped to 33 hours. That's 48 minutes a week less than before the recession began, the lowest level since the government began tracking such data 45 years ago. Full-time workers are being downgraded to part time as businesses slash labor costs to remain above water, and factories are operating at only 65% of capacity. If Americans were still clocking those extra 48 minutes a week now, the same aggregate amount of work would get done with 3.3 million fewer employees, which means that if it were not for the shorter work week the jobless rate would be 11.7%, not 9.5% (which far exceeds the 8% rate projected by the Obama administration).
It doesn't take a crystal ball to see what's happening but then again you prove that it still takes a village to raise an idiot.
Are you chopping onions or are you getting weepy?

You're all patriotic (?) now, Giantsloth--but not so much when you liberals were actively rooting for us to lose the Iraq War. Right, traitorlib?
Course, why should you care if more Americans are killed if their deaths further your marxist agenda? Not you.
Obama's 15% Unemployment? It's already here, moron.

Bad news for you guys: the recession is at an end.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/206631
"Macroeconomic Advisers, the St. Louis-based consulting firm that compiles a monthly GDP index, reported to its clients Monday that while second-quarter GDP was tracking at negative 0.1 percent (recession), the third quarter was tracking at 2.4 percent growth. The folks at the Economic Cycles Research Institute agree enthusiastically. [...] "If we're right and the recession is over, the job market should improve by year's end.""
Obama's stimulus is working. Are you ready to congratulate him on his bold leadership in turning around the economy? Of course not--you want the economy to fail, so you can return to power and start destroying the country again with your incompetence and failed policies. So how are you going to do that now that your ace in the hole has turned into a joker?
Obama Corruption| 7.16.09 @ 12:30AM
Giantsloth, you can go back to your shrooms or your bong now. Either way you're delusional, loser.
Obama has already admitted that unemployment is going to continue to rise--how far, no one knows. If your marxist Obama's unemployment numbers near 20%, you stupid liberals won't even get elected dog catcher!! Americans will HATE you!
Obama's polling numbers are dropping like stones. Democrats in general are stinkin' up the polls, too. Too f-ing funny for words.
Too bad so many Americans are going to get hurt in the proces, but we know you lousy libtard b@stards don't care..
