The worst thing Sonia Sotomayor said was not the bit about a wise Latina would make better decisions than a white male, but WHY she says wise Latinas have better judgment. See today's Washington Times editorial. And what was that about the "facts" she might "choose to see?"

Thanks for the heads-up. I think I have it fixed now.

"In the Berkeley speech, a 2003 speech at Seton Hall University and a 2002 address at Princeton University, Judge Sotomayor said this: "Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences, a possibility I abhor less or discount less than my colleague [federal district] Judge [Miriam] Cedarbaum, our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging."

I almost wish you hadn't fixed it. We're screwed.

just don't call her a racist, it makes us look bad.

Does that fact that Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito both claimed that there ethnic backgrounds enabled them to make sound decisions on issues dealing with race make absolutely no difference to you people?

Sounds to me like a double standard.

Tim| 7.8.09 @ 3:35PM

That is not the issue. Sotomayor would have us believe that her decisions-in all instances- would not be merely "sound" but superior (to those of a white male).

Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito were making personal references to their own individual and familial experiences and backgrounds--testifying before Senate committees. Everyone at one time or another has had to blow this kind of sunshine during a job interview. Judge Sotomayor undoubtedly has been there many times herself. Sotomayor, however, went beyond biography and made a blanket statement comparing one race to another. No matter how you slice it, she made a misstep.
