James Antle says Gov. Sanford should shut up.  For some reason, the cheating, lying chief executive of South Caroline believes that we all need to know more details of his "love story."  Uh, no.  I lost interest long ago.  In fact, I never was interested in the details.

While the loquacious, clueless guv is humiliating himself, he's also further hurting his wife and children.  But apparently he is too self-centered to notice.  The true heroine here is Jenny Sanford.  She's conducting herself with dignity and putting her kids first.  She appears to have all of the class that her husband lacks.  As Ruth Marcus writes in an appreciative column in today's Washington Post:

What I admire most about Sanford's response is that she has apparently concluded -- correctly so -- that the person who is humiliated by her husband's affair is, in fact, her husband, not her. And so she is not standing by his side, but she is not hiding in a hole, either.

Instead, she took the kids out to see the tall ships -- and breezily told the press mob, "I wish we had room on the boat for you all, but we do not." He rambled on in a news conference; she crafted an elegant and thoughtful statement.

Shutting up isn't enough.  Gov. Sanford:  please, resign and go away.  Go heal your family.  But if you're too selfish and myopic to do that, go follow your illicit love or whatever else you want to do.  Just do it out of the public view and stop inflicting your tortured views on the rest of us.  Really, just GO AWAY!

AMEN.

Unfortunately, our society is always fascinated by a "love" story, and is too stupid to understand this is not a "love" story, it's a lust story.

Love always has as its object the one being loved. If Sanford loved either his wife or this Argentine or even his kids, he would be concerned only about their well being. He would make sacrifices for their welfare. He would put them first.

Instead, he moans and groans about his tortured soul, clearly more concerned about his own well being than that of anybody else. He is, in fact, so concerned about scratching his own itch, he can't even see how ridiculous he is.

What a phony he is. He professes to be a Christian, but can't even practice a modicum of what his Savior is all about - love.

Go away, indeed.

I was once in a very similar situation as Sanford. Your capacity to think correctly is impaired. He should resign for the good of his state, his family and himself.

I agree with all Mr. Bandow has written. I have one question. Would he have written the same thing if Governor Sanford were a Democrat? I suspect we'll have to wait for the next scandal by a Democrat to find out.

John Produmo knew that we didn't want or need to hear why he got involved with Christine Keeler. He had the decency to withdraw from public life, and spent the rest of his life doing low-key, unglamorous charitable work in the East End of London.

Is it too much to ask that Mark Sanford follow suit? Get thee to a soup kitchen, Mark!

Instead of going away, Sanford can do penance to the taxpayer by vetoing all bills coming from the legislature. I say stay on Sanford and keep frustrating those big spending liberal Republicans in South Carolina. The only one to suffer from a Sanford departure would be the taxpayer.

And the funny thing is that I'll bet his "mistress" will dump him in a second once he no longer has power as governor. The guy is an ugly slug. It's amazing how power makes women swoon. But once the power's gone, she'll see him for the pig he actually is.

nedwilliams| 7.1.09 @ 1:32PM

Te Lum,
Actually, Sanford has a lot of money, too, and that typically translates to the "greatest aphrodisiac."
Mike,
Bandow doesn't need me to defend him, but what's your point? That Bandow is hoping he'll go away so that Americans will move on from the "scummy, GOP governor" story? So, would you "agree with all Doug Bandow has written" if he were writing about Bubba Clinton?

louis tully| 7.1.09 @ 1:44PM

This guy actually caught a huge break when, the day of his big confession, Jacko died, knocking the confession off the front page. I realized he was not just lovesick, but truly sick, when he went back to the presses to reclaim his rightful spot on the front page. Straight jacket time!

Mike | 7.1.09 @ 2:17PM

Ned Williams,
My point is would Mr. Bandow keep the story alive for political points if the other party were involved. The interesting thing about Bubba Clinton is how long and hard the GOP and conservatives kept hammering him. Why not do the same to Sanford?

yuch, sex brings out the beast in too many;

maybe sex SHOULD only be for procreation.
if only.

Alan Brooks| 7.1.09 @ 2:40PM

....and if you or I molest a kid you go to prison; if you are Jacko you have memorial monuments built to you.

nedwilliams| 7.1.09 @ 3:17PM

Mike,
Well, did Clinton go away? he (arguably) shut up about it, but . . .

More importantly, I'm curious as to why you are questioning the sincerity of Bandow's condemnation/criticism of Sanford. Your basis?
