South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford appeared to have survived his Argentinian political scandal, but this AP interview -- in which he continues to embarrass his wife and himself with a surplus of candor about what really should remain private -- could very well blow the whole scandal open again. Sanford is an introspective man and he clearly was (is?) in love with the woman with whom he was unfaithful. But if he wants to govern, it is well past time to move on.
Sanford finds himself in a hole and he needs to stop digging. Of course, he hasn't taken that advice in the past.

Oh, chuckle, chuckle. Nice joke based a situation where a little girl died.

everyone wants to describe their private lives in excruciating detail:
"I'm gay!"
"I'm bi!"
"I cheated on my spouse!"
"I'm attracted to children!"
"I'm into leather!"
"

As long as he did not do it with a dude, he'll survive
Mary| 6.30.09 @ 8:40PM
Agreed.
The day after his confession, Fred Thompson practically begged him not to do this kind of public dance.
For the love of his children, he should stop this. He's already wounded them enough. Both him and his wife should stop talking to the press.
martine| 6.30.09 @ 8:43PM
Wow, no plans to resign. This is egotism folks. So much for the greater good of South Carolina.
Jerk. And what is with all the teary confessions and protestations of love? Man up, guv. And shut up. He clearly has no problem with humiliating his family every time he discusses this drivel with the press.

Isn't it ironic how the social conservatives are lining up with liberals on the issues of Sanford, against us libertarians.
Look, he had a mistress. Big 'F'in' deal! Just shows he's got even more vitality and masculine traits than we originally believed. Good for him.
Hey you social cons, with your liberal allies, how 'bout just shutting the 'f' up and leaving our libertarian Governor alone!
Die Rechte Ecke| 6.30.09 @ 9:48PM
Wow - a politico who won't resign in a scandal.
At least the scandal isn't because he lied under oath.
Still, discretion, Sanford, discretion....
Alan Brooks| 6.30.09 @ 11:32PM
hey dondero, you want guys messing with your teenage nieces and cousins, etc? Then like all of a sudden you're not so libertarian.
hey, let's hope we're lining up against you libertarians.
You're such pigs (and goats) you can't win elections. Good thing libertarians are that way; maybe not for you-- but for us.

His a bit-too-loyal wife:
"This is a classy woman who lacks pretension," Mosteller said. "I took a road trip with her last year, and she just automatically got into the back seat. When we were making a lot of appearances, and the schedules were hectic, she called and said, 'I've figured out that the key is changing your deodorant.'
"Jenny is someone you can talk politics with, you can talk about grand issues with, and you can also discuss deodorant," Mosteller said. "She's a remarkable, classy woman with a lot of integrity who is trying to keep it together."

Geez, Maria Chapur is a "teenager." Wow! That's news to me. All the press reports have her at age 41.
This is a victimless crime. Not even a crime. In the past, Sanford would have been applauded for being a real man. Now in Girlie Man America, he's derided as "politically incorrect," for having a flame on the side.
And the most disgusting thing about all this, is that social cons are joining in with our enemies on the Left to bash him.
We libertarians are with you social cons on a lot of things. It's a realy shame, and rather hurtful to our coalition that y'all are bashing Sanford.
We'll remember this next time y'all ask us libertarians to walk precincts or donate $$$ to one of your conservative candidates.

Hey Eric: Don't you mean "libertine," not "libertarian?"
No doubt when your putative wife cheats on you, you'll applaud her for being a "real woman."
Or don't women enjoy the same rights as men?
My guess is you'd whine like a stuck pig and see soon enough how "victimless" this crime is.
Then again, the operative word there is "putative."

Eric, I understand what you’re getting at with your ‘girlie man’ comment, but Sanford’s affair doesn’t make him a man. He’s doing himself harm by his adolescent yammering.
A fully developed man says this. And to any comments coming from his wife, all that’s needed is a public reminder that whatever her due, when she yammers to the press that can hurt their kids too.
Can you imagine Benjamin Franklin going on as Sanford has? I can’t. Character is revealed through adversity, and that includes any pit you may have dug for yourself. He needs to get some character, and fast, if he has any.
I don’t know if Governor Sanford should resign. SC should decide that and not people who don’t reside in the State.
I know our representatives aren’t priests –hell, even priests aren’t priests- and I don’t think we should be prying into their private affairs, but it’s incumbent upon them to keep private what is private. Why is that so hard to understand?
I like libertarians, agree with them on some issues and think of them as comrades in arms, but Kirk’s comment that libertarianism has no bottom is not without cause. Watching Sanford roll as I’m reading Kirk’s Conservative Mind is very instructive. The book is convincing me that history isn’t really much of a friend to presupposition.
I have no idea who’ll be running for president in ’12, but based on current possibilities I’d bet a hefty sum that I’m going to recall Tocqueville’s take on compulsory voting. As a property-less person, I’d give up the franchise in the blink of an eye if I knew the Country would become liberal (as Tocqueville understood the word) but not Luddite, and conservative but not stupid.
I’d take Franklin over any faithful but dull-witted counterpart without a moment’s hesitation.
Lighten up on soc-cons; however fallen, Sanford happens to be one himself.

He should be thankful that the whole thing blew over quickly and that everyone stopped caring, because it isn't that big a deal (at least not to anyone outside of his family)
Why is he trying to draw attention to himself again? and why does he sound like an annoying teenager?
