A few minutes ago, just after the House narrowly approved a
massive new federal energy tax, there was a nasty hail storm over
Washington, D.C.
Could it be a sign from above that the cap and trade bill that
just barely passed the House (219 to 212) is a
terrible idea?
Tim Phillips of Americans for Prosperity suggests the fact
that the vote was so close is significant given the Democrats'
overwhelming majority in the House:
While cap-and-trade passed the House, it's a testament to the
power of free market activists that it was a difficult,
down-to-the-wire, tough fight. This bill, Speaker Pelosi's top
priority, was supposed to sail through. Instead it crawled
through and barely made it past the finish line in the
House-and it took all the efforts of the White House to do it
when the bill stalled a couple of days ago.
The bipartisan opposition to this bill shows just how broadly
it will negatively impact the country. While some members'
votes were won with backroom deals and special interest carve
outs it is instructive to see that some commonsense Democrats
crossed the aisle to vote with most Republicans, and they
deserve our thanks. On the other hand, we are committed to
holding the members of Congress who sided with Al Gore, Nancy
Pelosi instead off hard-working taxpayers accountable.
Cap-and-trade is a massive new tax on American families and
American businesses. It's especially crazy to pass such a huge
new tax burden at a time when many families already face
economic hardship.
Fortunately, we have always believed the place to kill this
bill is the U.S. Senate. We will do everything we can to
educate the public about the danger that this legislation poses
for their family budgets and their economic freedom to help the
voices of millions of grassroots activists be heard on this
issue.
If the American people understand what this bill does, it will
die in the Senate.
Meanwhile, here are the names of the eight Republican lawmakers
who betrayed their party and their country by voting for this
extremist legislation:
Mary Bono-Mack (California), Mike Castle (Delaware), Mark Kirk
(Illinois), Leonard Lance (New Jersey), Frank LoBiondo (New
Jersey), John McHugh (New York), Dave Reichert (Washington), and
Chris Smith (New Jersey). (Why so many sellouts from New Jersey?)
P.S. I concur with my learned friend Jim
Antle that this legislation is political death for Democrats.
Updated 12:45 a.m. Saturday:
Michelle Malkincreated linked to a cute
"wanted" poster for the eight Republican sellouts (created

219 means it was unpopular, so they let some members vote

able to twist a few arms if need be.

If this were to ever become law by getting out of the Senate,
which is highly doubtful, it would lead to the end of the
democrat left and the law would quickly be overturned by a future
Congress. I already laid off a number of people after the
inaugaration in anticipation of this tax increase, but it is my
guess that there are alot of businesses that are not ahead of the
curve. Look for continued surge in unemployment and a crashing
economy in the short run in response to this becoming one step
closer to being law.
It is hard to believe that Dave Reichert voted against Boeing. He
will not be re-elected.
I started emailing my seantors today!!!!!!
A. Russell Jordan| 6.27.09 @ 12:14AM
Concerning Ellis' "crashing economy in the short run": Somebody
(my mother) was asking why powers that be would purposefully
steer our nation into the proverbial iceberg. It's subject to
debate, but my guess is that a worthless dollar would spark an
outcry from the grieving Michael Jackson fans/Obama supporters
for the "gub-ment" to "do something". To which the powers that be
would happily respond with an all new Euro-compatible currency-
ushering in an honest-to-God global banking system. Why else
would these "smart" folks in powerful positions lobby for such
nonsensical legislation that very obviously debases our currency
and our national sovereignty?
Remember, folks. If your head is in stuck in the ground, it means
your butt is in the air, and what good can come from assuming
that position? Stand up for what you know is right. Nobody else
is going to do it for you.
Sean| 6.27.09 @ 2:40AM
When has government ever overturned something like this once it
is passed? If the current crop of mainstream Republican ever get
a majority again you are more likely to see additions to this
legislation than it being repealed. Sort of like Medicare and
Department of Education. The grassroots Republican party members
better wake up and stop pushing the Bush McRomneys as leaders.

America in decline| 6.27.09 @ 10:19AM
Bold and ambitious American policy is usually best remembered not
for the intended, but the unintended consequences. There can be
no doubt, cap and tax will be no different. America already has
the highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world. It
also is an expensive place to do business: high costs associated
with health care, litigation, federal and state regulatory costs.
Piling another tax onto businesses simply makes American goods
and services that much more expensive and as a result, that much
less competitive. This will merely excerbate the trade deficit as
demand for lower costs goods from abroad increases and demand for
American goods declines. Further, with China and India having no
interest in a cap and trade system, on a macro scale, decreasing
greenhouse emissions within the US does very little. As for jobs:
cap and trade promotes off shoring and out sourcing to avoid the
costs of cap and trade. The idea that by taxing emissions highly
will start a green job boom is flawed. Markets will innovate when
both technology and economic incentive is there. Government
cannot force this to occur. It will only get in the way of
progess as is the norm. If you want to see where cap and trade is
designed to go see Rep. WAXMANS 300 pg Amendment. Scary, strange,
complex, and useless (much like Americas income tax). In short, I
have just about lost faith in ordinary Americans' desire to be
free from unnecessary and obstrusive government policy and more
importantly, I have no hope that the gulf of disconnect between
citizens and their elected officials shall ever be bridged. This
bill sucks!!!

Idiocy becomes our Congress. They ignore real scientific data,
the actual projected combined effects (or non-effects in light of
China and India in non-compliance with these goals) of such
activities having an impact on the climate (taking the most
rosiest view of the real data), and the consequent economic
disaster this activity invites. Everyone of the "stupid elite"
who voted for this "tax and trade" should reap the reward of
removal from their office in the next election. With double digit
employment on the near horizon, reams of scientific data
indicating that man-made CO2 plays no role in temperature change,
and the moronic socialized medicine on deck by the liberal
"thinkers", we Americans stand to pay a very heavy price,
possibly the ultimate price, as far as our country is concerned.
In one sense however, the Americans who were stupid enough to
vote for Obama and this like-minded ilk are reaping their
consequent reward. It's a lesson that may cost us all dearly.

Folks,
All this hotair, churning, and foolish talk about reducing global
warming. Are ya kidding with India and China and South America,
they are not gonna do squat in this area. We are pis__ng in the
wind.
The only technologically sound answer to our energy dependence on
foriegn countries is one that is within our grasp if we only had
the will>>>its NUCLEAR POWER.
Nuclear Power is the only safe, clean , available 24/7, source of
power all possible within the good ol' USA. Nothing else meets
those criteria. Not solar, not wind, not hydro, not natural gas.
Yea sorry Natural gas is not safe - handling and storing it kills
and maims many people each year. Nuclear power has not accounted
for one fatality in 30-plus years of 100-plus 1000-Megawatt
plants. And don't let anybody tell you the used fuel ("nuclear
waste") has hurt anybody, it has not. The volume of the used fuel
for all the nuclear power plants is less than 2 football fields
stacked about 20 feet high. the volume is very very very small
compared to the waste from coal plants which we dump into the
atmosphere and get to breathe in (causing 20,000 or more excess
lung cancer deaths each year in the US).
Let's get on with building 100 or more new nuclear power plants
and start converting to electric and natural gas powered
transportation (cars, buses, trains). It justs takes the will of
Congress to make this happen. Ask them to do this now.
