Free Gao Zhisheng

Christian human rights attorney Gao Zhisheng has been tortured and imprisoned.  China Aid and Voice of the Martyrs have released a new video providing a reenactment of his travails.  He describes his previous "kidnapping" and prolonged torture session.  Unfortunately, he has been arrested again.

His best hope is for Americans to publicize his case and protest to the Chinese government.

That will surely have an immediate and decisive effect on the Central Committee of the CPC, when they're not busy congratulating themselves on "Fifty years of democracy in Tibet", the sixtieth anniversary of a regime founded by the bloodiest butcher in human history and their defeat of Japan in WWII - tell that to the Marines.

Indeed, Gao will be given "hope" for a "change" in his situation by the same people who elected a congress which "...apparently doesn't care if Beijing further entrenches itself in East Asia while American influence wanes".

Maybe Oh, Bummer! can offer them a deal, say, the Republic of China. Only thing is, a deal requires valuable consideration. Hmm, government bonds?

One of the reasons this man is being tortured is no doubt to extract FALSE confessions, a classic strategy of totalitarian governments. Sound familiar?

On the larger issue, conservatives -- though not their Republican representatives -- do tend to be better on the China issue. At least they give more rhetorical energy to denouncing China's horrible human rights record. Then again, the corporatists that dominate the Republican party are only too happy to live with it, just so long as the profits keep rolling in.

Dan Brown's new book, The Lost Symbol, has created quite a stir. He does know how to peak people's interest, get us curious about mystery new books releases and keep the pace of his novels at a fast and furious page-turning frenzy. OK, so his prose is mediocre and won't win any literature contests and high praise from critics but the fast pace and curiosity level keeps you going. It's a winning formula for him, selling millions of books worldwide.
