Congratulations, Sarah Palin

On Jan. 26, I wrote this:

Clark Stooksbury at The American Conservative suggests me (tongue-in-cheek) as ghost-writer for Sarah Palin's $11 million book. Actually, I'd think my Donkey Cons co-author Lynn Vincent might be ideal for the job, since she's already co-authored the bestseller Same Kind of Different As Me.

The Associated Press reported yesterday:

Sarah Palin has picked a collaborator for her memoir.
A spokeswoman for SarahPAC, the Alaska governor's political action committee, says that Palin has selected Lynn Vincent, an author and features editor for World magazine, a conservative Christian publication. Palin's book, currently untitled, is scheduled for release next year by HarperCollins.

You can read more about Lynn Vincent at World. She is a very experienced writer and editor who is also an exceptional manager. Donkey Cons was Lynn's idea. She recruited me to the project and then we suffered through "publishing hell," as the proposal was accepted, then delayed, and then approved with an ultra-tight deadline.

The book was a difficult project in part because Lynn lives in San Diego and I live in the D.C. area, so that all our collaboration had to be conducted via e-mail and phone. Lynn has praised the contributions of my "encyclopedic knowledge" of political history to Donkey Cons, but it was her really aptitude for planning and organization that made it possible.

Sarah Palin has picked the perfect collaborator for this project. She and Lynn are almost the same age, for example. Both of them are evangelical Christians, and both are very down-to-earth people. Here's some video of Lynn speaking to students at a Young America's Foundation conference:

Congratulations, Governor. If you didn't hire the best writer in the business, at least Lynn is very close to the best writer in the business. She's also got an excellent sense of humor

Sometimes it seems like Governor Palin has disappeared north to Alaska, but I still like her when I think of her. I can't say the same for most of the politicians in the lower 48. Sarah Palin 2012!

Crusader| 5.22.09 @ 2:57PM

Wow, 30 minutes since posting and no Palin-haters yet? Must be some kind of record. Maybe they're getting an early start on Memorial Day weekend.

notmypresident09| 5.22.09 @ 3:14PM

Crusader, All the Palin Haters are getting a head start on the weekend by removing flags from cemetaries.

KS| 5.22.09 @ 3:18PM

I loved Same Kind of Different as Me. I thought that Vincent was ill not long ago, so I'm happy that she can collaborate with Palin on her book.

Old Texican| 5.22.09 @ 3:27PM

Robert Stacy, Thank you.

God bless Sarah. She hung it all out there for all of us.
How about..."Palin Cheny 2012" ?
Or perhaps: "Palin Pretrayus 2012" ?
(OKOK I misspelled his name...sic?
Please forgive me children of the left. Heh!)

Look, people...Obama and crew don't expect another genuine election. They expect us to fold.

No wonder you can't find ammunition...but be at peace. You can still buy all the 12 guage shotgun bird-shot you want to pay for.
Inject a little warm candle wax, (or super glue), into a birdshot round and it becomes a "slug"...oops "powder blue shirts".

In some places you can still buy.22 ammo.
Please do so. Great barter currency. You can trade ten .22 rounds for a cord of firewood. Your family gets warm...and your customer gets to shoot game to feed his family.

Some of you folks think I am being silly.
Have you ever watched children starve?
Sadly, I have. If I told you there was a only a one in ten chance that you get to watch your children starve because of our electoral mistake...would you spend a hundred dollars?

I honestly believe our military will protect us from outside...even if it means court-martial due to "By order of the President".

The issue is...will we Americans accept "courts martial", disgrace, and even death, to keep "inside" protected?

The children and/or fifth column that infest this site demand that we all shut up or the above.

Sadly, they are supported by our Electoral Mistake...(Obama and crew).

Ran| 5.22.09 @ 4:01PM

RSM,
Ditto what Old Tex said.

Happy Memorial Day & Thank-you to all who have served this country.

Conservative comedians here. You people make me laugh.

Crusader, maybe, just maybe if we don't mention them they won't show up. From my lips to God's ears.

Crusader| 5.22.09 @ 4:08PM

Old Tex, try www.ammunitiontogo.com. Check every day and sometimes you can find stuff. Also gunbroker.com seems to have ammo as well. But you are right, it is slim pickins out there! .45ACP, .308, and 00-Buck are hard to find.

Smitty, Amen to that!

L. Ross| 5.22.09 @ 4:10PM

I too miss the lovely Mrs. Palin. I only wish that RSM had added a video of her doing just about anything. Yummy.

Tim| 5.22.09 @ 4:28PM

What, did Dave call out sick? Hello Dave! Red Meat here! Sarah Palin the greatest menace liberalism has ever faced.

Daisy| 5.22.09 @ 5:15PM

Yummy? If Governor Palin does become President, is that what we can expect from immature boys during her tenure? Oh, no.

Rod Stanton| 5.22.09 @ 6:32PM

If the GOP does not have a *DEATH WISH* (which given who they've spent their money on the last 6 years seems to be the case) they will nominate her in '12. With The guy Crist calls a right wing extermist from SC (Mark Sanford for those not following the left wing Republicans push for all of O's programs the last 5 months; and his testcrude comments about a fellow(?) GOP Gov. from a nearby state).
I need to declare that I have been a Sarah fan for 2.5 years. Every since she sued Bush and then won a year later! She is conservative in the mold of Ronnie and Maggie. And so am I!
F*** the guy from Fla (gov that is not Rubio).

Palin has hired a "collaborator" for her book.

You mean a "ghost writer," jackass.

This functionally illiterate woman needs to hire someone to write her book because she can't do it herself.

For this, you say "congratulations."

What an intellectual Renaissance we're living in.

Maybe she can hire Joe the Plumber and Miss California to help her brainstorm some ideas for the future of the Republican party.

Murphy| 5.23.09 @ 3:07AM

I am in a reflective mood now, and I am pondering the notion that perhaps if I did not make a hobby horse out of Sarah Palin slandering, I might be find myself becoming less of a piece of human debris.

Why do we troll conservative websights spewing ad-hominems, logical fallacies, and random gibberish? It seems we are less than gracious in victory, just as we are in defeat. Maybe we are merely cyberbullies, exalting in the political defeat of those whose values and beliefs we abhore. Or perhaps we wish for all opposition to be cowed into silence, since dissent is only patriotic when we are out of power.

As a Palin Conservative myself I have read several Sarah Palin books. I am looking forward to reading this one as well. GO TEAM SARAH !

Murphy| 5.23.09 @ 12:04PM

Bizarro-Murph --

Your criticism would be apt indeed and well deserved were it not for

a) Palin's repeated and mean-spirited attacks on people who don't share her views (including her nasty accusation that Obama "pals around with terrorists");

b) The vitriolic and yet dim-witted rhetoric of right-wing defenders of Palin who insist every criticism of their priestess from the North is a "vicious attack" and any deviation from their ideology is "treason";

c) The repeated claims that Palin came off looking bad in the major television interviews she voluntarily gave because the interviewers somehow tricked her into looking foolish or ill-informed;

d) The fact that this website and its right-wing radio allies observe NO decorum whastoever in their attacks on anyone sharing even a slightly different viewpoint from their own. According to "conservatives" today, to be a Democrat is to be a socialist, communist, fascist, nazi, traitor, cult-member, and terrorist sympathizer. This rhetoric is based entirely on lies and deception, and frankly, I'll have no more of it.

tonypal| 5.23.09 @ 1:01PM

Murphy:

Let's go through each of your points. I'll just reference them by letter.

a) Obama did pal around with terrorists, unless of course you don't believe Bill Ayers was a terrorist. As always, simply describing the actions of a liberal is said to be a vicious attack.

b) No evidence to support this claim. Liberals love to wallow in self-pity, and you're no exception. Challenge a liberal on their foreign policy positions and they cry like little schoolchildren that someone's calling them unpatriotic. Here's a challenge for you: Cite me a specific example of a prominent conservative calling a liberal unpatriotic. Make sure you include the full quote along with the citation.

c) No question she wasn't ready for that interview. I don't think the various defenses of her appearance are particularly effective. Of course, I'm pretty sure she knows there's only 50 states.

d) According to liberals, anyone who disagrees with them on gay marriage is a homophobic, hate-filled moron (see, Carrie Prejean). Anyone who disagrees with a liberal on affirmative action or support for Obama is a racist. Anyone who disagrees with liberal views on tax policy hates the poor and the middle class. Anyone who disagrees with a liberal on immigration policy is anti-immigrant and a racist. Anyone who disagrees with a liberal on abortion "rights" hates women and wants them to die in back alley abortions.

I could go on and on, but I have other things to do. But the reason liberals attack instead of debate is that they don't think, they emote. Liberalism is an emotion based ideology, where good intentions are a substitute for successful policy prescriptions. As for the so called attitude of those on this site, it's usually in response to attacks by the likes of you.

Lastly, only certain so-called democrats are socialists, etc. One of them happens to be our current president. He's taken over multiple industries, seeks to suppress opposition views through intimidation and the creation of bogus straw men. He intends to nationalize health care, give citizenship to millions who came into this country illegally, seeks to expand the government beyond our wildest dreams, unionize through coercive ballot measures, destroy talk radio through backdoor FCC regulation, and who knows what else. His entire background is steeped in Marxist politics and associations, and millions of people in this country who call themselves democrats believe in his every move.

Murphy| 5.23.09 @ 2:13PM

tonypal --

I do appreciate your dispute over claims and facts, and I do appreciate you not simply calling me a "fascist," which is how most people debate around here.

I refuse to go searching for quotes in which conservatives call liberals unpatriotic, but your own Peggy Noonan wrote an entire BOOK last year in which she argued that tactic should stop. (For which she was roundly criticized by fellow conservatives.) She has plenty of examples, so I'll refer you to Reagan's former (and favorite) speech-writer for more information -- just in case you've been entirely cut off from all forms of media for the past ten years.

About Bill Ayers: I think that what he did was awful and criminal. The actual extent to which he was involved in "terrorism" is more complicated.

Be that as it may, Governor Sanford of South Carolina -- someone frequently named as a potential Republican candidate for president -- sits on an education board with Bill Ayers just as Obama did. I've not heard anyone accusing Sanford of "paling around with terrorists," and I suspect we can all figure out why that is.

Your last paragraph begins to become a little incoherent. Your conspiratorial view of Obama just seems irrational to me; he's not trying to "destroy talk radio;" he's not a Marxist. He spent 10 years teaching Constitutional law at one of the nation's more conservative law schools, surrounded by conservative thinkers, and he absorbed many of their ideas. I think we all know why this part of his past never manages to be featured on right wing websites as well.

As for Democrats believing in Obama's every move.

All I can do is ask: tonypal, where do you get your news? You can't get it all from Rush Limbaugh, or you'll walk around ignorant.

The Democrats and the left in general have been in non-stop conflict with Obama for three weeks, some pulling from his right, some from his left.

The whole fight in Washington is between Obama and just about everyone else.

Murphy| 5.23.09 @ 2:46PM

tonypal --

I also appreciate your admission that Palin's defenders went overboard defending her interviews.

Now, about the 50 states. She probably does know how many states there are, as does Obama. (Obama's comment on 57 contests was actually accurate; in some states, remember, there is more than one contest [e.g. Texas]; there are also places like Puerto Rico and Guam that have non-binding votes. I'm pretty sure his number was exactly right, but if it was off one or two, it wasn't because he doesn't know how many states there are. And by the way, neither he nor his wife ever held the blatantly treasonous view that a state had the right or the ability to secede from the Union, like Todd Palin.)

But let's face it. None of this is actually about Sarah Palin. She's become a symbol for people on both sides -- a testament actually to her formidable and shrewd political instinct.

To be honest, I think Democrats have more to fear in Sarah Palin than in any other likely candidate. Obama would shred Mitt Romney and Bobby Jindal. They're simply no match. Palin would be a different matter. If someone prevails upon her to be locked up with policy reports and advisors for a few months of solid education on what is actually going on in the world, she'll be a tough one to beat.

Murphy| 5.23.09 @ 2:52PM

And one final thing, tony. (Just trying to answer point for point.)

I'm a liberal and I don't think anyone who thinks differently than I do on immigration is anti-hispanic, or that disagrees with gay marriage is a homophone. Frankly, I do not no a single person who thinks that way. Not one. I do not know a single person who would call you a racist for questioning affirmative action policies. Not one.

Now, the media delight in these extreme and volatile reactions. Name calling and fist-pounding are evidently good for ratings -- just ask Limbaugh's five mansions. Or Keith Olbermann's banker. That's why I don't go in for any of that nonsense. Give me the Lehrer News Hour (which by the way was evidently W's favorite news broadcast), a few newspapers, and I'm fine. I don't need Glenn Beck moaning or howling at me to know how to love my country; I don't need Sean Hannity sneering at me to know how to think. All that stuff is for idiots. I'm not joking on that either. I think to respect Glenn Beck you'd literally have to be an idiot. Call me over the top.

Angel| 5.23.09 @ 2:53PM

Sarah Palin may be a lot of things, TP/Jeremiah/Murph--but she's not mean spirited. Just take one look at her beautiful smiling face and you'd know that. Only a nasty little piece of liberal garbage like you would dare to make such a specious assertion. Loathsome liberal. SARAH PALIN FOR PRESIDENT 2012!!

Angel| 5.23.09 @ 2:55PM

Murphy @ 3:07 AM--right on! Wow, I love this new Jeremiah--he's found the light!!

I Conner Klast| 5.23.09 @ 3:26PM

To those who feel Gov Palin has "fallen off the map" her recent rejection of Obama stimulus cash will bring her back. She rightfully objected to federal construction guidelines, the proverbial strings that go with all "free money", be it credit cards, the mob or govt. Bravo to a sensible Governor as others buy into federal control of their states.

tonypal| 5.23.09 @ 9:25PM

Murphy:

I'm not really interested in this anymore. Suffice to say that I disagree with you. Liberals attacked Carrie Prejean for her views. That was simply a mircrocosm of how the left debates, because they seek to impugn the motives of those who disagree with them. Take note of how Al Gore will attack anyone who disagrees with him on global warming as being a tool of the oil companies. I could give you hundreds of examples; there's 2 for now.

Obama is going to implement local community standards, in the name of diversity, through his FCC appointments. Not even a debatable issue at this point. Again, you really need to pay attention to this.

You're the one who whined about being called patriotic, but again produce no examples except some reference to a Peggy Noonan book.

Ayers bombed a police station and threatened other bombings. That's terrorism. While I might not like Sanford sitting on a board with Ayers, and I like to see some proof of that, Obama's relationship with the guy goes far beyond that. Obama began his political career at the man's house, and much more.

You attack talk radio because you don't get it. You go after Rush Limbaugh, but it's doubtful you've ever listened to him for any appreciable length of time. If you have, you're probably like most liberals in that you take umbrage at being accurately portrayed.

It is not treasonous to hold the view that a state should be able to secede. That's just plain silly. It is, however, treasonous to spill national security secrets and methods on the front page of a newspaper, as the NY Times has done repeatedly over the past 7 plus years.

Basil Plumley| 5.23.09 @ 11:54PM

@ tonypal

You said--c) No question she wasn't ready for that interview. I don't think the various defenses of her appearance are particularly effective.

Um, as much I like your posts and agree with what you say, you are very wrong about this area. Much of her interview with Couric and Gibson were chopped up and spliced to make her sound disjointed. You should read the transcription of the entire dialogue instead of the dialogue that was aired. When you read the entire dialogue, you will realize that Sarah comes off as quite normal and rational.

When Sarah Palin was away from her McCain/Bush handlers, she does extremely well. You should watch a Larry King interview of Sarah to get a gist of who and what she is. Sarah does a great job. Then again, Larry King is a live show and not one prone to editing like Gibson and Couric.

BTW--I am not inclined to take anything Murphy-Jeremiah-Tommy Pain as being true. In another article on this page, he/she/it accuses our troops of atrocities. His source? An Iraqi woman blogger and Middle Eastern news reports. (like Al Jazzera and Al Arabiya)
Murphy/Jeremiah/Tommy Pain is a psychopathic liar.

ruth| 5.24.09 @ 12:47AM

Governor Palin was also excellent in an extended interview with Maria Bartiromo of CNBC. The Governor was very knowledgeable and intelligently discussed our country's serious need for more energy sources and how Alaska could help in that regard. Sarah just needs to define herself; it wasn't her fault that McCain was a weak candidate. Why are liberals so bent on destroying her? I say let her speak.

Murphy| 5.24.09 @ 12:45PM

Basil Plumley --

First, by grouping Al Jazzera together with Al Arabiya -- as though they were ideologically the same -- you show your ignorance.

Second, there are even more sources becoming available than I thought. Attached is reporting on a judge's ruling that photos depicting sexual violence against children in American detention centers be released.

Murphy| 5.24.09 @ 12:49PM

tonypal --

By "liberals" you mean some guy on a blog somewhere.

I read "conservatives" writing insane gibberish here all the time. I don't take it as representative of all conservatives.

Miss California went out of her way to become a public figure; now she is working as a political advocate. (And good for her.) She should expect people to say unkind things. It's the nature of political conflict.

Everytime I log on Am Spec I'm called absurd names and unkind things are said about me. Does that typify every reader or poster at Am Spec? No, it does not.

So -- I'd say you need to learn to be a bit more flexible. As do we all.

TonyAndrade| 5.24.09 @ 1:45PM

Sarah is a HOT conservative!
Her book will be #1 when it becomes off the press.
Why? She sells advertising and that is why the media has so much interest in her status as a opponent to the Obama Marxist agenda. Imagine CNN put on the front page that Sarah couldn't find someone to pray with a as a lead story.
No story on the DC crooks!
The fact is that Sarah is a role model for all families and that is what makes the progressives-liberals start foaming at the mouth.
They are like rabid dogs that are out to destroy anything that is wholesome. http://SarahPalinThankGod.com
Sarah is a mother, governor, a leader, is very intelligent, and will defeat Obama big time in 2012.

ruth| 5.24.09 @ 1:56PM

You said-First, by grouping Al Jazzera together with Al Arabiya -- as though they were ideologically the same -- you show your ignorance.

Please explain to the AmSpecBlog world how they are ideologically different.
Are they in favor of Democracy in the Middle East? No
Do they openly support the right of Israel to exist? No
Perhaps, you can explain their position w/r/t "human rights" vis a vis their government sponsors.
Have either done an exposé on the evil influence of Wahabbism? No

Perhaps, you can regale us with your perception that Hamas and Fatah are ideologically different.

I will breathlessly count the moments until you respond. I am not expecting much from you but I would really like to see your response.
Maybe, once you recover from your hissy fit/crying jag as a result of absurd names and unkind things are said about you.

Oh, and BTW, I have a friend of mine who was in the upper command echelon at Gitmo (#3 or #4). I know he would say you are full of crap.

Good Heavens--will your lies ever cease? Had your boy judge Perez Hilton not made a video comments calling her a dumb b***h, I doubt the controversy erupts.
A political advocate? For who? For what?

Um, she is a public figure as a result of being Miss California. I guess you are disgusted with Miss California because she doesn't think like you.
That alone gives her high marks in my book.

Murphy, Jeremiah disappeared after he/she threw F-bombs at us on AmSpec and morphed into Tom Paine (travesty), Tom Paine disappeared after you/he/she threw the C word at us and morphed into your present handle, Murphy. Up now is your vicious slander against our troops and CIA accusing them of systematically raping and torturing children in Iraq and Afghanistan. You'd better stop parsing your words and start providing real proof to back up your hate. Some old Iraqi lady's 'frighteningly' realistic accusations on her blog aren't enough for me to condemn our entire military and CIA. Like I said on another thread--"PROVE IT!"
