At least, that's what more liberal clergy apparently think. They are backing so-called "card check," which would allow union organizers to mislead and intimidate their way to victory.
Reports Cybercast News Service:
Union leaders, clergy and liberal members of Congress gathered in the mostly empty U.S. Capitol Visitors Center early Tuesday morning to hear multicultural choir music, speeches from religious leaders--and to pray for the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).
The event was a prayer breakfast sponsored by Faith Leaders for Workplace Fairness--a coalition of liberal religious groups that was formed for the sole purpose of promoting EFCA, commonly known as the "card-check" bill.
Under this bill, union organizers could compel an employer to recognize a union as representing the employer's workers any time more than 50 percent of workers in a workplace publicly signed cards saying they wanted the union. When that happened, there would be no secret ballot among the workers on whether to unionize, and the workers who had not signed the public cards would have no say in the matter.
As I've written for the Spectator, the fairest way to decide on a union organizing drive is to hold a vote. Why why hold a Soviet-style ballot where the commissar gets to look at your vote when the Soviet Union is gone?

What we do for our Heavenly Father through His Son Jesus will last, here on earth and in Heaven.
What is that we are to do? First acknowledge the One who put you here, best do this since this plane of existence is a test for the Final Move out.
Two choices, no other, and no turning back after the testing of the spirit of man is complete. This covers all levels and types of government as well. Everyone of us are diligently sought by God to be diligent, faithful to His Rules, and to lead according to the unparalleled implications that exist therein. God put us here to prove our faithfulness to Him and to acomplish that to which He has called us. Since the Sin began, Jesus became the Mediator between us and the choice of heaven or hell. LM

Opponents of unions often point to the secret ballot we have for elections in this country as a reason why these votes should be secret. But they're wrong to do so.
The vote that creates the union is a much different thing than the elections that happen once the union exists (which are obviously done by secret ballot).
As a loose analogy, consider the "vote" to found this country, signed in public in Philadelphia by brave men who risked being hanged as traitors for their signature.

Why is the vote to create a union different than the vote cast once the union exists? Why should one be secret but not the other? Absurd assertion, utter nonsense posited by a liberal toady, Murphy/Jeremiah.

Daisy --
It's not absurd at all, and my Declaration analogy, now that I think about it, is better than I thought.
The initial vote is held in an environment that is AGAINST THE IDEA OF WORKERS VOTING ON ANYTHING AT ALL.
The foxes are running the hen house. To even things up, a public vote means you have to be willing to explain to the person you work with why you would vote to deny them future votes.
Once a system of actually holding elections is in place, then a secret ballot is fair. But not before.
Murphy| 5.21.09 @ 6:42PM
Remember --
By voting against the union you're essentially saying that you do NOT believe you or your fellow workers are entitled to any vote whatsoever.
If you believe that, you should say in public.
Once the union is in place, then a system of redressing grievances by vote exists, so people can vote as they like in secret.
The difference between these two kinds of election should now be very, very clear.

You're such a liberal whore--how can you stand to look at yourself in the mirror? Selling out your fellow Americans, you traitor. Shame on you.

The wolves are the corrupt union thugs like you who are trying to destroy private enterprise, Murph/Jeremiah. If unionization is desired you wouldn't need to ram this coercive legislation through congress. Unions are a pox and most Americans hate them.
Daisy| 5.21.09 @ 8:12PM
Murph/Jeremiah, why SHOULD anyone HAVE to go public with their opinion? Because you said so? Sounds like fascist liberalism to me. Oh, that's right, you are a fascist liberal.

All you have are petulant insults. You call me a "whore" and a "fascist," but you don't make any argumentative points. You thrash around and hurl insults and foam at the mouth; you are uncivil and unkind and uninteresting; you have no ideas and no points to make. Nice talking to you.
Murphy| 5.21.09 @ 8:39PM

You really should ask yourself why you can't engage in an adult conversation with someone you disagree with.
Why are you inadequate to that basic activity of a free society, the exchange of different ideas?
Daisy| 5.21.09 @ 9:00PM
Why are you inadequate to that basic activity of a free society, the secret ballot? You don't talk--you lie.
Daisy| 5.21.09 @ 9:02PM
God doesn't hate elections--liberals like Murph/Jeremiah do. Especially when they know they're going to lose. That's why they created ACORN.
