There is a lesson here for all of us regardless of political affiliation.
The political class serves only itself.
We should look at what every elected official said in their last campaign and see how it differs from what they actually do when in office.
If it doesn't match if the fail to live up to the fundamental principles they espoused to get elected, vote them out give the job to someone else.
They will learn they are trainable.
In the end we get the government we elect, whether it is good or bad is ultimately up to us.
Get active get involved it is the only way we can turn this around.

There are a lot of gay rights supporters with deep pockets. They are important contributors to Democrats. They have a lot of power within the party. I am sure the NH governor wants to sign the legislation, but is polling to see whether he can get by with it. Hermit is right. Gov. Lynch is a "good Catholic" who served on the board of a catholic hospital. His church, of course, is opposed to gay marriage, but he won't let that stop him. New Englanders are socially pretty liberal.

Odds are he will if it will personally be beneficial.
The word politician should be replaced with opportunist.

There is actually a tremendous amount of resistance to gay marriage in Maine, evidenced in the petition drive to recall this vote, which people are very unhappy about, especially north of Portland, a city full of transplants who have their views with them.
The local press coverage has been extremely biased and now is virulently anti-Catholic...see Bill Nemitz' column in the Portland Press Herald on 5/7. Today there is also a semi-hilarious article about how gay marriage will revive our dead economy, which has basically been done in by the business-hostile Democrats.
On some ways this issue reflects conflict between the more conservative blue collar native Maine and liberal people from away.
As for the legislature--Baldacci has zero moral courage and is totally in debt to the GLBT lobby, true for almost all of the D's. That's the problem with endlessly compromising your principles.
