Sen. Arlen Specter said that Majority Leader Harry Reid promised that he could retain his seniority while flipping to the Dems.  Alas, that was then, and this is now.

Reports the Washington Post:

The Senate last night stripped  Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) of his seniority on committees, a week after the 29-year veteran of the chamber quit the Republican Party to join the Democrats.

In announcing his move across the aisle last week, Specter asserted that  Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) had assured him he would retain his seniority in the Senate and on the five committees on which he serves. Specter's tenure ranked him ahead of all but seven Democrats.

Instead, though, on a voice vote last night, the Senate approved a resolution that made Specter the most junior Democrat on four committees for the remainder of this Congress. (He will rank second from last on the fifth, the Special Committee on Aging.) Reid himself read the resolution on the Senate floor, underscoring the reversal.

Oops!

True, the Dems say that the issue will be revisited after the next election.  As in, do the Dems need Sen. Specter's vote for the majority and has he been a dutiful drone when called upon to push Democratic initiatives over the top?

Well, I guess he could always switch back if he's reelected!

Hilarious. I think I said when I first saw news of the defection - it is like signing an arms treaty with Russia and expecting them to hold up their end of the bargain. Hope this teaches that old bag a lesson about his new D buddies.

Payback's a ..... ,ain't it?
It was never about the Republicans moving one way or the other. It was strictly about Arlen.
He had to figure out how to keep his job of basically doing nothing for pay, and going home to PA.
You can bet he wouldn't have been welcomed home with open arms.

Democrats, like jackals and hyenas are not domesticated animals.

What an ultramaroon! Old Arlen is finding out something that traitors and turncoats have known since antiquity; switching sides only means that you have lost the trust of your former friends and foes. The Democrats were never going to honor his seniority, because the moment he switched parties he lost any leverage he had. The wooing is over and now there is nowhere for Arlen to turn; the Democrats can do whatever they want to with Specter and there's not a damned thing he can do about it...he has no allies anywhere and no friends to turn to for help. The GOP is glad to be rid of him and the Democrats have his dumb @ss in their pockets.

How's that switch working out for you now, Mr. JUNIOR Senator?

"My momma always said life is like a box o' chocolates, you never know what your gonna get".

I all seriousness and not one the normally defend Dems, the senators that had more seniority than him should not have had to accommodate him. They ran and won as Democrats. He ran and barely won as a Republican. He only switched when he knew he was finished as a Republican. Had he voted more as even a so called moderate Republican he would have lost his seat to a Democrat, hence his kissy face with the Dems. I hope Sestak defeats him in the Dem primary. I might even donate to him. This whole Republican party is too far to the right is a straw man constructed by Arlen. He will not be missed.
