Dr. Rand Paul, that is, Congressman Ron Paul's oldest son. The Bowling Green physician says he isn't planning on challenging Sen. Jim Bunning in the primary and will only run if Bunning decides not to seek a third term. Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson said pretty much the same thing when he announced his exploratory committee for a Senate run, going so far as to say he had Bunning's blessing. But Bunning's spokesman has subsequently insisted that the two-term incumbent is running again in 2010.

Thankfully, he's not an extremist on foreign policy issues like his Dad. He's still generally non-interventionist, but doesn't have that Anti-American tinge to his views and rhetoric as the Sr. Paul does.

He's mainstream enough on foreign policy to win over the hearts of Pro-Defense libertarians, and even some outrigh Defense Hawks.

When you add that to his background as KY Chair for the Taxpayers Union, and his libertarian stance on cultural matters, Rand will be tough to beat in the GOP primary.

I wish him all the best.

Calling the Senior Paul anti-american is rather a stretch, especially since he has a peerless reputation for using his office to advocate for veterans.

I think it would be more to describe Paul as pro-defense but anti-Military-Industrial Complex.

Anyway, I like that neither Paul Jr. nor Bunning are career politicians with backgrounds in law.

Rand Paul is a doctor and Jim Bunning is a retired MLB pitcher. Sadly, Bunning has a reputation for being something of a layabout in the Senate where non-baseball matters are concerned.

Rand Paul, son of Congressman Ron Paul, gauges support for Senate run in Bowling Green & Paducah!

Some politicians feel the need to travel to Washington, DC to ask permission to run for office or to obtain some regal blessing.  Rand Paul, this week, will travel to Teresa's Diner at 509 Gordon Ave Bowling Green to gauge support for a possible US Senate Run.  Dr. Paul will be there for breakfast at 7AM Thursday May 7th.

May 8th, Dr. Paul will go to Paducah to speak to supporters.  He will speak at the Gazebo (4PM) at 2nd and Broadway.

Wouldn't it be great if politicians spent more time getting the approval of Kentuckians, and less time being "anointed" in DC?

We'd love to see you there; some of us still believe in elections not coronations.

*Dr. Rand Paul is an eye surgeon from Bowing Green, and the son of former Presidential candidate Congressman Ron Paul.

*Dr. Rand Paul is the founder and chairman of Kentucky Taxpayers United.
