A new self-described "right-wing" student group, Youth for Western Civilization, has caused controversy at the University of North Carolina by bringing to campus two Republican congressmen, Tom Tancredo of Colorado and Virgil Goode of Virginia, to talk about illegal immigration. In both cases, liberal student protesters disrupted the events.

Meanwhile, however, Crystal Mangum -- the woman whose false accusation of rape defamed Duke University lacrosse players -- gave a speech at Chapel Hill without incident.

Well, if she's speaking about what an awful thing she did, basically trashing herself, I wouldn't object. But I doubt it.

Look. Folks on the right, have no-one to blame, but themselves. What's good for the goose. Go disrupt THEIR speakers. Start charging THEIR stage. Like the 911 Commision said: They were at WAR with us, but we weren't at WAR with them. Stop crying like a buncha women, and start fighting back, like MEN. THAT'S the only way.

MattSwartz| 4.23.09 @ 9:27AM

Timothy,

What awful advice for conservatives! There is a lot to be said for civility, and even for extending it in public to people who don't have the capacity to return it.

When you break up somebody else's meeting, you're fitting in to a story about them. When somebody else breaks up your meeting, they're fitting into a story about you. One of those things is better than the other, just pragmatically, and and all of the benefits of being civil are just gravy.

"Youth For Western Civilization."

Hmmmmmm.

Sounds like a rightwing domestic terrorist group. Maybe they should have named themselves something innocuous, like "Islamic Jihad." Groups like that get left alone by our gubmint.

MattSwartz: Poster boy for whiny GOP wimps everywhere.

Pete| 4.23.09 @ 9:43AM

At the very least, bring sufficient security so that you can get your message out.

Gayle Miller| 4.23.09 @ 10:22AM

If the GOP is considered to be wimps, they have brought that on themselves with their behavior vis-a-vis the thuggish Leftwing Democrats during the past 6 years. Trying so hard to be liked. I don't give a rip if the left likes me! I do intend to conduct myself in such a way that they RESPECT me or FEAR me! Respect me because I have the courage of my convictions and fear me because within that security I will kick butts and take names!

Smitty| 4.23.09 @ 10:25AM

Bravo, Gayle! Love your spirit.

Lily| 4.23.09 @ 10:27AM

I'm tired of liberal thugs, too.

Basil Plumley| 4.23.09 @ 10:32AM

Well stated Gayle!
Do you have a sister/relative named Ruth?
I pity the Lib-misogynists (like Bob) who will try to take you down with his "superior education".

ruth| 4.23.09 @ 10:58AM

Gayle must be my long lost twin. Good morning, Basil P. :)

I think Blob's gone. Haven't been graced by his presence for a while.

Apparently here, everyone is either a "wimp" or "Jacobin" on this issue.

I don't care who calls me a wimp, but I care a lot if conservatism starts adopting the methods of the French Revolution rather than the American one.

Anyone willing to break up a meeting and suppress somebody else's peaceful, nonviolent (and I'd add non-pornographic) speech is merely proving that they don't know how to behave in a civil society. I have more in common with liberals who sit and discuss issues calmly (there are not many of these) than I do with self-proclaimed conservatives who justify the throwing of chairs at other people's heads just because their targets are "liberals".

MattSwartz| 4.23.09 @ 1:44PM

Being too conservative for Burke. It's the new version of being too Catholic for the Pope, and apparently there's an epidemic of it in these comment threads.

I don't belong at HuffPo, I belong at The American Conservative, which is a better magazine than AmSpec.

They update their blog too slowly, though, so you're stuck with me. It must be annoying how often I get things right about conservatism that RushBots get wrong, though.

Red Phillips| 4.23.09 @ 5:03PM

Yes, civility is important for conservatives. The University needs to provide adequate security to keep their students under control. But if the University fails to do that, then there is something to be said for Youth for Western Civilization providing their own security. And something to be said for sticking it out. I thought it looked bad that Tancredo left the last time after the window was broken. The mindset should be we're here and we're having our meeting, and if you want me to shut up or leave then you come down here and make me. My money is on a significantly numerically inferior group of conservatives against a bunch of whiney tofu eating libs. I would protest outside their lib meetings, but I wouldn't attempt to disrupt them.

MattSwartz| 4.23.09 @ 10:26PM

Red,
You've got it all wrong. As Conservatives who are Right, it is our obligation to put a stop to people who think differently. If they're giving aid and comfort to the enemy, we should probably waterboard them immediately...

JosephineSouthern| 5.2.09 @ 1:43PM

What has happened to Chapel Hill?

You got this all backwards,
A new self-described "right-wing" student group, Youth for Western Civilization, has caused controversy at the University of North Carolina

THE LIBERAL CRAZIES caused the CONTROVERSY

Put their backs to the wall.
