We've already seen that Pres. Obama is reluctant to have religious images displayed near him. So what is he going to do on May 17th, when Notre Dame requires him to wear doctoral robes prominently featuring a cross and a prayer to Mary in Latin meaning "Our life, our sweetness, and our hope"?

Oh, he'll probably start frothing at the mouth. He'll have seizures.
His head will spit around and he'll spit up pea soup.
Because Obama's a Satanist.
This is why I come to the Am. Spec. website.

And this guy Lawler. A mind like a steel trap. Nothing is lost on him; no sir.

If you know anyone who can get a message to the Pope, tell him he's needed. Post-haste!
We need the Pope to explain to the world that the Sermon On The Mount is not something you use to advance your central economic plan unless you're a theologically illiterate bumbler and stumbler.
It's not like floggin' a tickfah, for goodness sake!
I mean it. The Pope needs to address this. If we can't get him, let's call Spengler!
Epic Fail. EPIC FAIL!

Interesting times in which we live: President infanticide is welcomed and celebrated at our supposedly pro-life Catholic Universities. Interesting, indeed.

Maybe Notre Dame will tent the Golden Dome and the golden statue of the Virgin Mary so as not to offend Obama's tender sensibilities.

Tom Paine: You sir, are an ass and a malevolent idiot. Whatever you are being paid to troll, it is too much.
Tom Paine| 4.19.09 @ 11:35PM
Bill Bailey --
"Malevolent idiot" has a nice ring to it; it's sharp and witty. Part of its strength -- if I may be so bold as to offer my opinion -- comes by yoking the good gutsy "idiot" with the Latinate "malevolent"; pairings of this nature can be quite effective. Like calling someone a "officious dolt" or an "unimaginative bore."
Denise-Mary| 4.19.09 @ 11:37PM
Obama will refuse. Or more accurately, Axelrod will make ND an offer that IT cannot refuse, so that Obama won't have to wear the religious garment. He might deign to wear a robe with NO embellishment at all, but I'm betting it's not going to be one with Our Lady on it. And after all, this is no longer a Christian nation, so why should he?
Tom Paine| 4.19.09 @ 11:38PM
(Of course, "idiot" too is Latinate, ultimately deriving from the Greek work for "servingman," I believe -- or something along those lines. The larger principle holds, however, and you'd be no pugnacious hound to pursue it...."
Tom Paine| 4.19.09 @ 11:41PM
....I.e. if you wish to avail yourself of this particular stylistic gesture, a judiciously selected Latinism qualifying or intensifying a strong Anglo Saxon word will hit the mark quite satisfactorily if you work it right, dig?
CH| 4.19.09 @ 11:48PM
TP: I most certainly would enjoy giving you the particular stylistic gesture. Any idea what it could be, pugnacious hound?
Angel| 4.19.09 @ 11:49PM
LOL!!

Very good. "Pugnare" is latin for "too fight"; "hound is good old Anglo Saxon.
Kudos, dude.
Angel| 4.20.09 @ 12:03AM
"to fight," pugnacious little liberal dude.

All we can hope (I use that loosely) Is the BLESSED MOTHER changes him by wearing such a thing or allows him fail in all he does to offend HER SON!

Tom Paine:
I am delighted, nay thrilled, that you find my choice of words and my bow to the Latin/Norman French influence in English so enthralling.
Now bugger off, you venomous troll.

Yes, Mr. Lawler, I've been wondering the same thing. If one doesn't want to be seen with religious iconography around him, then he should not accept the invitation. If first Georgetown University and then Notre Dame bows to his holiness The One, hiding their own religious tradition in shame -- what does that tell the rest of the Christians and/or Catholics in the country? That their religion is something to be ashamed of?
There have been many first with this president who has only be in office for three months. What does the rest of the three years and 9 months have in store? I find this all very disturbing. We get to know this president a little more each day by what he says and does (and demands?) and I'm uneasy with what we're discovering.
Tim| 4.20.09 @ 8:45AM
Nothing will happen, the display only proves that he effectively "owns" the Catholic Church in America by strolling into Notre Dame and collecting honors.
The Pope can say whatever he likes but when it comes down to it, Notre Dame wants some of Daddy goodtimes old fashioned hustle.
2Anglico| 4.20.09 @ 9:22AM
tom pain is Austrian for "obama lackey".
ame| 4.20.09 @ 9:28AM
Obama won't wear the doctoral robes with a cross and prayer to Mary - Notre Dames' cowardly president Jenkins will have a it removed just like Georgetown's president DeGioia, that supposed Catholic institution, covered up the IHS symbol at Obama's demand.
Jenkins and DeGioia are spineless and ignorant men whose own moral and ethical centers are as absent as Obama's.
Notre Dame graduates should protest loud and clear during their graduation or simply not show up and let Jenkins and Obama speak to and full of the wind they blow.
Becky| 4.20.09 @ 9:29AM
The two of them (Obama and ND) have already made a mockery of the church, so at this point, it is probably just curiosity about his attire. If animal dung can be used in "artwork" regarding Mary, possibly the college president wonders how much more damage can Obama do? The fighting Irish have become the diplomatic French.
Thomas| 4.20.09 @ 9:57AM
Let's just wait and see what happens if he speaks in a place that has non-Christian icons.
Who Would Jesus Torture| 4.20.09 @ 12:49PM
1. Since when did the overwhelmingly Protestant/Evangelical Far Right give two figs about the Catholic Church?
2. I take it the next time a pro-death penalty Republican speaks at good old Notre Dame, the Right Wing outrage factory will also point out that the Catholic Church is opposed to the Death Penalty in all cases, thus causing the politician's invitation to speak to be a direct violation of Notre Dame's Catholic mission?
Angel| 4.20.09 @ 2:51PM
Always a liberal troll around to bleat strenuously about the outrage of the death penalty while conveniently ignoring the savage destruction of 51 million babies. Would Jesus approve of your heartless and disgusting part in this holocaust?
