We need the Pope to explain to the world that the Sermon On The Mount is not something you use to advance your central economic plan unless you're a theologically illiterate bumbler and stumbler.

"Malevolent idiot" has a nice ring to it; it's sharp and witty. Part of its strength -- if I may be so bold as to offer my opinion -- comes by yoking the good gutsy "idiot" with the Latinate "malevolent"; pairings of this nature can be quite effective. Like calling someone a "officious dolt" or an "unimaginative bore."

Obama will refuse. Or more accurately, Axelrod will make ND an offer that IT cannot refuse, so that Obama won't have to wear the religious garment. He might deign to wear a robe with NO embellishment at all, but I'm betting it's not going to be one with Our Lady on it. And after all, this is no longer a Christian nation, so why should he?

Yes, Mr. Lawler, I've been wondering the same thing. If one doesn't want to be seen with religious iconography around him, then he should not accept the invitation. If first Georgetown University and then Notre Dame bows to his holiness The One, hiding their own religious tradition in shame -- what does that tell the rest of the Christians and/or Catholics in the country? That their religion is something to be ashamed of?

There have been many first with this president who has only be in office for three months. What does the rest of the three years and 9 months have in store? I find this all very disturbing. We get to know this president a little more each day by what he says and does (and demands?) and I'm uneasy with what we're discovering.

Nothing will happen, the display only proves that he effectively "owns" the Catholic Church in America by strolling into Notre Dame and collecting honors.
The Pope can say whatever he likes but when it comes down to it, Notre Dame wants some of Daddy goodtimes old fashioned hustle.

Obama won't wear the doctoral robes with a cross and prayer to Mary - Notre Dames' cowardly president Jenkins will have a it removed just like Georgetown's president DeGioia, that supposed Catholic institution, covered up the IHS symbol at Obama's demand.
Jenkins and DeGioia are spineless and ignorant men whose own moral and ethical centers are as absent as Obama's.
Notre Dame graduates should protest loud and clear during their graduation or simply not show up and let Jenkins and Obama speak to and full of the wind they blow.

If animal dung can be used in "artwork" regarding Mary, possibly the college president wonders how much more damage can Obama do? The fighting Irish have become the diplomatic French.

I take it the next time a pro-death penalty Republican speaks at good old Notre Dame, the Right Wing outrage factory will also point out that the Catholic Church is opposed to the Death Penalty in all cases, thus causing the politician's invitation to speak to be a direct violation of Notre Dame's Catholic mission?
