Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin
said in her speech to an Evansville, Indiana pro-life dinner
that she understood the temptation to abortion because she felt
it when pregnant with her son Trig. I'm sympathetic to
conservatives who
argue that pro-life praise of Palin's decision to give birth
to a baby with Down syndrome seems to implicitly accept some
pro-choice premises. But I do think there is something to be said
for a strong pro-life example, as well as an antiabortion message
that comes wrapped in empathy.
Unfortunately, this latest disclosure will probably just deepen
people's pre-existing adoration or hatred of Palin without
contributing anything new to our discussions of abortion.
