You have to wonder what is running through the minds of some of the kooks at the extreme-left DailyKos website.

Amazingly, one America-hating Kossack who goes by the handle “KLS” actually denounced rescued Maersk Alabama Captain Richard Phillips for “recklessly put[ting] himself, the crew, and the Navy Seals at unnecessary risk.” In a piece that was spotlighted at RealClearPolitics, KLS wrote:

The pirates’ modus operandi is that they hold the crew, ship, and cargo harmlessly until a lot of money is paid to them.  Phillips “heroic” actions put his crew and himself at risk.  If he’d done nothing except acquiesce to the pirates’ demands, there would have been no risk, just possible discomfort until the extortion money was paid.  Instead he put himself and the Seals at grave risk.

I applaud the crew, the Seals, and the military chain of command for their actions.  I think Phillips was in error—if not a grandstander, then greatly misguided.  Does anyone know what Maersk’s orders to Phillips and the other Maersk masters are in a piracy matter?  Probably to do nothing to incite trouble and to notify the shipowner and the U.S. Navy.  The captain works for the shipowner and must follow those orders.  The master who fails to follow the shipowner’s orders is guilty of the crime of barratry if a financial injury to the shipowner results.

The actual result is that Maersk, the shipowner, saved a lot of money that would have been lost with the ship inactive and off charter while it sat idle in a pirate port.  Is this worth the deadly risk to the crew and the Seals?  Not to me.

Of course KLS assumes that (i) he or she knows the standing orders that apply to the Maersk Alabama (ii) the pirates were honorable fair play-loving chaps who would not have harmed Phillips (iii) the ransom would have been paid, and (iv) with the ransom paid the pirates would have actually let Phillips go.

As Gateway Pundit notes, “Only on the left are heroes like Captain Phillips, who put his life in danger for the freedom of his men, called grandstanders.”

In fairness, it appears the blog posts highlighted by DailyKos on its front page applaud Captain Phillips, so it’s possible KLS does not speak for most Kossacks.

I just read the AP piece on Yahoo. Phillips did the right thing by offering himself as a hostage in exchange for the safe release of his crew. I hope they keel-haul the one pirate that survived - it's only fitting.

And now the Somalian Pirates are threatening payback? I vote we embed Marine detachments of ten men on all US flagged ships in that area from now on and give them orders to terminate all threats of piracy with extreme prejudice.

kingfish | 4.13.09 @ 1:49PM

To be fair, I visited Kos earlier and for the most part what I saw was support for the SEALs, captain, and crew. Both sides have the nutjobs that don't know when to keep their mouths shut.

MT| 4.13.09 @ 2:37PM

Yeah, but at least our nutjobs are patriots.

Cookie| 4.13.09 @ 2:39PM

Many liberals prefer people to bend over and assume the position. Kudos to the Captain for standing up like a man!

jaywhite| 4.13.09 @ 3:08PM

The Daily Kos should become the official "news agency" of the Obama abomination. They both want to destroy this country. The insane anti American editor of Kos was part of the group that assisted the Obamination campaign use of the internet to raise five times as much as McCain.

A dog can get elected if the right amount of money is available.

They could use the same game plan as Obama did.

For example, the dog "Isn't really a dog , it's a person with a rare medical condition" . If a group has enough money , there are a sufficient number of very low IQ voters who would eventually believe the commercials.

ray gagner| 4.13.09 @ 3:53PM

Just bend over, avoid eye-contact, and beg for mercy?

Smitty| 4.13.09 @ 4:06PM

Yup! Just make sure your grip is tight. That's the liberal way.

" Yeah, but at least our nutjobs are patriots. "

MT you can say that again, they're nutjobs are nutlapper jobs and to attack Captain Courageous is pretty misguided and since they weren't taken to task for their comments they must find some solace in the roomful of miserable loons...

Michael Minor| 4.14.09 @ 8:52AM

Modus Operandi for hijacked airplanes used to be do nothing, kowtow to the hijackers and hope for the best. Similar to what the dumb ass writer at the KOS suggested. Guess what people, those days are over. I say Kudos to the crew that fought off the attack just as I say kudos to the people on flight 93.

If the pirates knew they were never going to get ransom money ( as they won't from the USA) and were going to be used for target practice by every Navy in the free world as a policy, and not just as a once or twice good deal, there would be a lot less piracy in the world. I hope armed drones start filling the air over that part of the sea and start firing at pirates before they strike, make it as dangerous for them to be at sea as it is for the ships traveling through that waterway.

chris| 4.14.09 @ 8:56AM

is anyone really shocked by this not jobs comments. most people when faced with a situation like this will either fight or run, either is perfectly acceptable b/c they want to live survive. these far left nut bags would rather let the evil doers (horrible adjective) do what ever they want and hope that by appease the bad guys everything will be fine. when i really take a hard look at the way these "far left loons" (o'riely, bill) think it is really simple. they have an innocent view of the world where everyone is good and if we appease the bad people they will not harm us. this type of thinking is good when you are like 5 but it is also very dangerous. we are americans and for whatever reason, too many cowboy movies or our inallienable right to life we fight to defend ourselves. i am not the smartest guy in the room and i base my view on life on team sports, the idea that the team is bigger than the individual. take this pirate situation or any situation like this, place yourself in it with your family friends or co-workers someone is going to make a stand rally the "troops" sacrfice themselves for the greater good. this idea is what the left does not understand. and one more thing when any american is confronted with hostlie action from a forieng agent the US has the duty, responcibility, and obligation to protect that individual(s). putting it in terms you youngsters understand it is about having an american sitizens back.

Matty| 4.14.09 @ 9:23AM

So pay the pirates and let them run free unchecked? No thanks, those three on that boat got exactly what they deserved, a rifle round between the eyes! (SEALS lead the way!) Appeasement does not work, the world should have learned that in WWII. As for Captian Phillips, the man has some brass ones. He ensured not only the safety of his crew, but he ensured that America didn't have to shell out money that we can't afford to secure the ships release. I salute you sir. As for this basket case launching personal attacks against him, why don't YOU become a freighter capitan and sail off Somalia's coast, if you know how things should have gone. Let's see how that would end.

NavyBrat| 4.14.09 @ 9:41AM

I wish I could say I was surprised by this drivel... but I'm not. While I'm glad that many on the Daily Kook applaud the actions of the SEALs & the crew of the Alabama, the vitriol that seeps out from their warped world view is just flat out disturbing. They almost seem as if they come from those of the same ilk as those who called my Dad a "babykiller" when he got back from Vietnam. And if they're not posting on the Daily Kook, they're leading the Democrat party. These people are NOT to be trusted in any way, shape, or form.

WendyG| 4.14.09 @ 9:44AM

Let's see... conservatives caught cheering on disaster and nitpicking the president in the midst of a tense military standoff. And they turn out to be wrong on every point. What to do, what to do...

I know! Let's seize on a single random comment from someone we've never heard of among tens of thousands of comments left in support of Phillips.

Wheh! Problem solved. That more than makes up for Newt, Rush, Glenn, Sean...

Nick in Virginia| 4.14.09 @ 9:52AM

Obviously, this KLS idiot never had a bunch of punks waving AK-47s at him (neither have I, for that matter, but I don't go around saying it's no big deal). "A few days of discomfort" is all he can visualize.

I suggest that the next time there is a hostage crisis, KLS should notify the White House that he wishes to substitute himself for the hostage. Then, after his release, he can tell us all the good things about the kidnappers.

IF he is still alive, of course.

Neocon in Texas| 4.14.09 @ 10:13AM

Hey that DailyKos blogger is right on. By fighting off those pirates we've taken money right out of the coffers of ... ACORN! Yep, that's right, a new report shows that those pirates were possibly ACORN activists fund-raising for the next US election because the billions they received in the Stimulus Package just ain't enough. How dare Capt. Phillips and the Navy Seals deny ACORN their rightful share of the profits of greedy shipping companies and investors that probably are linked to the criminals on Wall Street or any U.S. Financial Institution you'd like to tar and feather because the administration told you to ... I say make 'em walk the plank. Poor pirates.

Robert Smith| 4.14.09 @ 11:02AM

I agree with the idea of putting two fire teams of US Marines on every US ship in that area with the orders to terminate any attempted takeover of the ship with prejudice! After a few attempts, the word will get around not to mess with a US Ship! I applaude BO for having the you-know-whats to approve the rescue, but I doubt he would go along with my plan to end this for good!

jumbo-1-43964| 4.14.09 @ 11:03AM

God intervened in Capt. Phillips rescue! "Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for another" by the Capt. volinteering to be a hostage, to save his men,God rescued him from his captors!
Amen

Clyde M.| 4.14.09 @ 11:52AM

Even if our president is bowing to the rest of the world and blaming America for every evil every committed by mankind, we do have real men and women who are willing to risk their lives for the benefit of others. As for the Navy Seals - three shots three kills. Don't waste ordinance of pirates.

I recall back in the 80's when westerners were being kidnapped right and left by Lebanese thugs, that two Russians got snatched, and they were let go p.d.q. Seems a relative of one of the kidnappers went missing and was returned piece by piece. No more Russians kidnapped. Maybe we can learn from that...

This is the kind of acquiescence that led to Hitler coming to power ant taking over Europe - If you do not make a stand, they will be stealing your car next, man, and people like you say its ok - Are you kidding? The risks are mitigated by telling these guys that leaving the coast in their boat may mean they get shot out of the water - fishing or no, they are dangerous to the world and will be stopped, NOW...

KLS is the type of Quisling/Chamberlain who would denounce the actions of a hero, until he himself is at risk, then begs to be saved. No spine, and CERTAINLY no conscience.

Tracy| 4.14.09 @ 2:25PM

Obama FINALLY did the right thing he said no to using force the first time he was asked or it would have been over earlier. Capt. Phillips is the callaber of man who has a that rare brand of courage and honor under fire that is hard to find anymore. It could have been over for him and his family sooner.

Tom Younce| 4.14.09 @ 3:08PM

That is hysterical. Only a Pelosi Lapdog would bash the Capt. and crew for standing up against terrorists. This guy MUST believe that we ALLLLLLLLL just pay the ransom's and go on our merry way. Life is pretty and rosey and la, la, laaaa
NO WAY! KILL THEM ALL. No mercy, no surrender. Look at the Gulf of Aden now. EVERY SINGLE ship is at risk now because the PIRATES ( Criminals ) know they will be paid. NOW? With America, they understand that they WILL BE KILLED REGARDLESS OF AGE! THAT is the way to handle Pirates that wish to dirupt a Major shipping lane for WORLD COMMERCE.
Next time a crew is taken, send the guy in as a hostage who gave the Capt. so much grief.
See how he feels then.

Pat| 4.14.09 @ 3:23PM

Typical spineless liberal thought process! Don't make a stand for principles and values...just cower and do what they say. George| 4.14.09 @ 4:04PM

I vote we make KLS our chief negotiator for any terrorist hostage crisis. I am sure he will be able to persuade the captors to release the hostages. After all we all know the left possesses superior intellect and abilities. If you don't believe me just ask them...

Naples Conservative| 4.14.09 @ 4:17PM

KLS, in addition to being a fool and traitor is wrong on the definition of "barratry"

In maritime law, barratry is the commission of an act by the master or mariners of a vessel for an unlawful or fraudulent purpose that is contrary to the duty owed to the owners, by which act the owners sustain injury.

I wonder what unlawful or fraudulent purpose he would say the Captain had.

Matthew| 4.14.09 @ 4:23PM

Ok by placating to the demands of pirates which are actually terroists will promote more pirate behavior. Guns are not toys or tools. They are ment to kill people and animals. The captain and his crew are not there to assume all the pirates want to do is get money. They have guns. The captain gave his life for his crew. The captain in no way put anyones lives in danger except for his. So KLS I see it diferent than you. You are the sheep. You are a follower not a leader. Too bad we can not arm the crew and shoot every pirate attempting to board a ship. You would see a lot less pirates. Liberals would not have it that way. As I see it KLS thinks we should follow the orders of all terroist and pirates. We should all be sheep. The captain was a leader and how dare you say otherwise. KLS is a follower. Waiting to be slaughtered and served up for a nice lamb dinner.

MT| 4.14.09 @ 5:38PM

Chicago, only a leftist knee-pad wearing, kool aid drinking moron would call Obummer Captain Courageous. Sick joke, dude--brave for sitting on his azz waiting for the Navy SEALS heroes to finish the job. Right.

It would take someone with a brain the size of an amoeba to come up with these thoughts. It is obvious this amoeba (is this giving an amoeba a bad name?) has never been in charge of people. Family? Loved ones? Friends??? Only those who are truly honorable would put others ahead of themselves. This one obviously is not. Sorry. Just my opinion.

These folks who rail on the real Heros of today are nothing more than heathen scum, not fit to even be allowed to live in our great country! I say throw their asses out of America, strip them of their citizenship and cast them to the leftist idealogs they truly revere! Hopefully Cuba or China and even Russia, where they can REALLY use their "intellect" to speak out against their new host country and see how their crap is "tolerated" over there! Good ridance in advance!

char| 4.15.09 @ 1:07PM

Obama had to give the ok - he already looks like an idiot. But of course had this mission falled then he could say "see I told you not to do it, but no you wouldn't listen, you forced me to say okay". America we're in trouble - we need more people with the back bone of flight 93, the captian of his ship, the pilot of his airplane, the man that protects his family. Not a man that will sell his country with a bobble head for a speaker....... sorry just my thought.

Joy| 4.15.09 @ 3:08PM

The Daily Koz is an anit-american web site, so why would they agree with Capt. Phillips and his way of thinking, by saving his ship, his shipmates and by NOT BENDING OVER BACKWARDS to these Pirates. That is what is wrong with NONE of the SHIPPING COMPANIES don't have enough GUTS to DEFEND THEIR SHIPS. THEY ALL AND I MEAN ALL NEED TO GET ARMED PERSONNEL ON THEIR SHIPS AND THIS WOULD BE STOPPED "instantly". It doesn't take a Philadelphia Lawyer to figure out something as simple as GUNS ON BOARD. Capt. Phillips is a brave man and done the right thing and so did the SEALS....... ALL ARE HEROS. Thank God the Military is there to save our country. Give our country another 6 - 12 months and we will be back to before 9-11 and ATTACKED AGAIN.

Sam| 4.15.09 @ 3:11PM

Do you people realize that the main stream media said that Obama gave the go ahead to take out the pirates. You will NEVER, EVER hear this from any networks, but OBAMA didn't have to give the OKAY........ the Military could have done it ALL ON THEIR OWN WITHOUT HIS PERMISSION AND HAD PLANNED ON DOING THAT THEMSELVES WITHOUT HIS APPROVAL, so like usual, the Administration makes it LOOK like they gave the orders, when the Military was going to do it anyway. WHAT A FAKE THIS MAN IS and you people BELIEVE THIS MAN IS SO GOOD, WAKE UP PEOPLE, HE IS KILLING OUR GREAT COUNTRY.
