We've previously noted that if South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford runs for president, it will be difficult for him to hold together a coalition of conventionally hawkish Republicans and the Ron Paul supporters who've been attracted to his small-government conservatism. Either Sanford will have to back away from his criticisms of preventive war and interventionism or risk the wrath of most Republicans, who are either Jacksonian national-security types or believe in something like the Bush Doctrine.

North Korea was the first test for Sanford and he sided with the advocates of pre-emption. Noninterventionist conservatives are predictably displeased. My own view is that Sanford basically punted on the question, saying nice things about his "former boss" Newt Gingrich and mean things about Democratic fecklessness instead of giving a Fox News audience a considered presentation of his preferred foreign policy. But since it is impossible to imagine that kind of answer coming from Ron Paul, it's the first good reason to doubt he'll go out of his way to please Paulites on issues of war and peace.

The paleo/alt right is already chattering. Sanford just blew it with the Paul crowd. Whether he did that purposefully to beef up his hawkish credentials for the larger hawkish base, or whether he is just clueless as to the hope that some Paul supporters were projecting onto him is an interesting question. But I really don't see this as a punt. It is hard to even remotely positively spin what he said. What could the reference to backing up your talk possibly mean other than something that would drive non-interventionist batty?

James, my friend, while this move on Sanford's part may be disheartening to Leftist Libertarians, and PaleoCons, we Pro-Defense Libertarians are extremely pleased.

Admittedly, we've been a bit concerned with Sanford on foreign policy. But his warming up to the Hawkish view is now going to allay those fears, and win him even further diehard support on the Libertarian Right.

Lew Rockwell, Justin Raimondo, Garris, et.al be damned.

So Eric, the Islamofascist meanies who you have been warning us about are poised to invade Texas and force your wife to wear a burqa. What is Kim Jong-Il and his band of skinny half starved soldiers going to do when they invade Texas? Make you smoke them up some brisket? That North Korean Navy must be bigger than I thought. It's going to take a lot of boats to get enough of them over hear to overrun all those angry gun toting Texans who I am sure would not take too kindly to being invaded.

How are we all supposed to sleep at night knowing that the grave North Korean menace could be upon us at any time? Surely this threat warrants some good ol’ fashion pre-emptive killin’. Why can’t those girly-men “leftist” libertarians understand this?

Red Commie Phillips, perhaps you should investigate the recent shooting spree in Minneapolis of a House Party, by 4 armed Somali gunmen, which has received scant mainstream media attention nationally.

And watch the video of the Minnesotans going on over to Somalia to join Jihad in the United States.

Oh, and there was a little beheading of a woman in New York by an Islamic extremist last month. Perhaps you missed that bit of news, as well.

And ya might have missed this bit of news, as well: Muslims in a Mosque in Knoxville, TN are trying to get the city to force a bar/restaurant owner out of business that's next to the Mosque, cause he's decided to sell beer.

Nah, these Muzzies aren't out to hurt us. They're not out to change our culture. They're just fine upstanding citizens. Didn't our Muslim President just say so over in Europe, you know, bowing down to the Saudi Prince and all?

Chris Hewlett| 4.8.09 @ 11:53AM

Mr Dondero, For Heaven's sake stick with the topic - North Korea. Do you really stay up at night worrying about NK invading North America? The Muzzies that you talk about are an immigration problem - not a country invading problem. Iraq - as a nation - never posed a threat to us. Neither does Afghanistan, North Korea, etc.
