Conservative strategic visionary Andrew Breitbart hits the target again.
In his Washington Times op-ed today the Internet news entrepreneur warns of the apparently coordinated proliferation of left-wing, pro-Obama Internet trolls out to stifle dissent and demoralize conservatives:
A digital war has broken out, and the conservative movement is losing. Read the comment sections of right-leaning blogs, news sites and social forums, and the evidence is there in ugly abundance. Internet hooligans are spewing their talking points to thwart the dissent of the newly-out-of-power.
We must not let that go unanswered.
Uninvited Democratic activists are on a mission to demoralize the enemy - us. They want to ensure that President Obama is not subject to the same coordinated, facts-be-damned, multimedia takedown they employed over eight long years to destroy the presidency - and the humanity - of George W. Bush.
Political leftists play for keeps. They are willing to lie, perform deceptive acts in a coordinated fashion and do so in a wicked way - all in the pursuit of victory. Moral relativism is alive and well in the land of Hope and Change and its Web-savvy youth brigade expresses its "idealism" in a most cynical fashion.
The ends justify the means for them - now more than ever.
Much of Mr. Obama's vaunted online strategy involved utilizing "Internet trolls" to invade enemy lines under false names and trying to derail discussion. In the real world, that's called "vandalism." But in a political movement that embraces "graffiti" as avant-garde art , that's business as usual. It relishes the ability to destroy other people's property in pursuit of electoral victory.
Hugh Hewitt's popular site shut off its comments section because of the success of these obnoxious invaders. Breitbart.com polices nonpartisan newswire stories for such obviously coordinated attacks. Other right-leaning sites such as Instapundit and National Review Online refuse to allow comments...[...]
Breitbart gets it. Such trolls already dominate Wikipedia and many other online meeting places.
I recently highlighted Breitbart's work in this space. He noted that refusing to engage the ideological enemy in popular media invites failure. Conservatives "can't win the political war until we take on the Hollywood and mainstream media battles," he wrote in a previous op-ed.

This is Axelrod's strategy to demoralize their (Obama's) opponents; probably originated from Alinsky. It's called astro-turfing, and they used it against Hillary first. I read about it on Hillary's supporters' blogs during the Democrat Primary, (it drove them nuts). They're paid--Jeremiah, JHarp, Obama Rules, Interloper--(Bob?), etc., and their attacks are coordinated. It's obvious. That's why I'm very mean to them.
Bill Bailey| 3.29.09 @ 9:38PM
Keep it up, Ruth. They deserve all the abuse we can throw at them. America is worth fighting for.
jharp| 3.29.09 @ 9:49PM
Bring it on.
You are delusional. I'm just an ordinary middle class father who is tired of the right wing lies and intend to call you out on it.
Though I often name call it is always, always, as a result of one of the right wing lies.
I figure if you can lie you are fair game.
czekmark| 10.4.09 @ 11:35PM
Of course you do the same when you detect a leftist lie, don't you?
Publius804| 3.29.09 @ 9:51PM
The left sees their small window to ram through much of what they want - they will stoop to any level to get it. Breitbart is right they must be met head on.
Roy| 3.29.09 @ 9:53PM
Yeah - some simple measures, such as PASSWORD AUTHENTICATION(hint, hint, TAS) can at least prevent some of the most obnoxious trolling behavior such as falsifying your name.
Preventing those with no lives from spamming comment threads to death is harder - some limitation on how many comments any one person can post to a given thread couldn't hurt.
There is also a tremendous amount of blatant lying and personal story mongering, often just done for ego, but I can readily imagining coordinated activists doing it for political motivation. One is the relentless liars who call in to radio shows claiming to be "lifelong Republicans", but it can be much more subtle than that. The key is to educate people to filter that out and make arguments stand on their own.
Still though - in the end I'm mainly hearing that leftist organizations have a strategy to state the leftist viewpoint on right wing blog comment sections(often dishonestly).
Well damn, good strategy. Why don't we do it(minus the dishonesty, which mirrors the leftist dishonesty in other fora)?
stmichrick| 3.29.09 @ 9:53PM
Hats off to Breitbart and the (few) others in LaLaLand for recognizing the insidious nature of leftist poisoning of the popular culture.
Soviet and American Communists made a significant effort to do this in the fifties and succeeded in part by branding their exposure as Red Scare paranoia. The only remedy then, as now, is reliable and cogent confrontation and refutation every time they surface.
We see trolls like Dave Mathews and jharp who live here at the AS primarily to annoy thoughtful debate. They certainly never score intellectual points.
Both of these individuals use the same technique; ridicule of right-thinkers in the most general terms, comparing conservative principles to religious fundamentalism and always lobbing a couple of references to their own unique intelligence .
I find that when you rain on them with common-knowlege factoids they are soon reduced to sputtering namecalling and go away for awhile.
jefferson| 3.29.09 @ 9:54PM
Another way to combat this is to make use of the IP addresses of trollers, match them up with a databank of other trollers, and take it back to them. Likely they're being paid by Podesta's rich tyrant of a boss. To do this, they'd need to coordinate with other websites.
Larry| 3.29.09 @ 9:55PM
No, Jharp, you're not. You're a troll, instructed by your handlers to destroy any and all opposition to the Lord High Obamamessiah, your master (or, more precisely, his Teleprompter). "ordinary middle class father", yeah right, Komrade.

jharp| 3.29.09 @ 10:26PM
John Cole, ex wingnut, just posted something that all of you here ought to give some long hard serious thought to.
"I used to get really, really agitated when people would attack me while using pseudonyms and remaining anonymous. I remember several times when I would fly completely off the handle and become unhinged, it would infuriate me so much. This was back when everything I thought I knew was crumbling all around me and it was starting to dawn on me what a fraud the GOP was, so I was more volatile, to put it mildly
And then at some point, something remarkable occurred to me. I realized that if I didn’t want anonymous people mocking me, there was an easy solution. I could quit saying and doing such incredibly stupid things. It was quite a revelation.
Now as we all know, I haven’t heeded my own advice, and I continue to say stupid things on an almost hourly basis. But if Rep. Doogan doesn’t like it when anonymous people call him an idiot, the easiest thing to do would be to STOP BEING SUCH AN IDIOT."
Thank you Mr. Cole. Well said.

'George Bush's torture' was an aggressive and effective interrogation technique used on less than 6 top al-Quaida types who had significant information on plans to kill Americans. It is also used on own pilots in training to prepare them for stressful captivity. You may have seen it demonstrated on a Fox News reporter as well.
How long would you resist using it if you thought those jihadists were planning to kill your children?
tnxplant| 3.29.09 @ 10:31PM
Typing letters on a keypad and posting a comment doesn't make your assertions true (10:15P post). Lies know no political boundaries.
And cherry-picking ridiculous claims that have been dismissed by serious conservatives (10:07P post) is a poor excuse for substantive discussion of ideas or policies.
Most comment sections on blogs of any stripe seem to be very short on critical thought and long on name-calling, foul language, and spin.

In fact, I'm glad you're pissed off because being pissed off is a miserable way to go through life. Just knowing that you were miserable for 8 years and continue to be miserable warms this rightwing nut job's heart.
It also warms my heart to know that you are utterly obsessed with this site and what goes on here. You can be found posting all over the place at TAS. It can't be to gather information, because nearly everyone of your posts is a diatribe on someone's stupidity. GE , under the moron, Jeff Immelt, continued its business dealings with Iran long after other U.S. companies had stopped. He did this by using European 'shadow companies' to hide the transactions. Traitor. Immelt has also been responsible for GE losing $363,000,000,000.00 (lots of zeros!) in value over the last 18 months. Not only is Immelt a traitor--he's a stupid and incompetent traitor. Now the federal government (democrats) is backing billions of dollars of GE bonds . Liberals do stick together, don't they?

Actually, jharp, General Electric (GE) is a company that tilts to the left.
GE long ago sold out to Jesse Jackson's so-called Wall Street Project.

Plumb Bob| 3.30.09 @ 7:28AM
Guys like jharp actually prevent any reasonable discussion. That's part of the strategy; by making disruptive and abusive comments, they derail any serious strategy formulation, and keep conservatives in reactive mode. Then they make the charge in other fora -- somewhat accurately because their strategy has worked -- that conservatives have no ideas of their own, but are simply anti-liberals.
You'll see the pattern on any major conservative blog that permits comments. You'll not see it on any liberal blogs, because they're aware of the strategy and head it off by denying conservatives access.
The difference illustrates a key difference between the American right and the American left. The right is interested in the robust exchange of ideas, and values a free and open discussion. The left is interested in keeping and maintaining power, and only gives lip service to free expression because it sells well.
Plumb Bob| 3.30.09 @ 7:36AM
It became apparent to me on my own blog that somebody on the left has assigned observers to conservative blogs.
A few weeks after my blog made Wizbang's finals for Best Conservative Blog, I received a small flood of hits from a site called "sadlyno.com." When I visited the site to find out why, I discovered that a commenter there had directed attention toward something I'd written that he felt was particularly silly. From the details he provided in his description of my blog, it was obvious that he'd been reading systematically for at least a year, even though he felt contempt for my point of view. Why would anybody systematically read a blog they despised, unless they had been assigned? My blog is small -- 200 to 300 hits a day -- and hardly deserves attention. But there he was, directing commenters to my site, and systematically following it.
I'd very much like to know who's coordinating this, and what their strategy is. We need to figure this out, because they're succeeding in demolishing our liberties, and we need to protect ourselves.
Plumb Bob| 3.30.09 @ 7:42AM
"Thers| 3.30.09 @ 1:21AM
Gosh, the GOP would NEVER stoop to internet trolling. Oh wait. Yes they would. And, famously, did."
A different commenter posted exactly the same link on the Washington Times site under Breitbart's post.
That the link is to a lame, innocuous, and completely honest version of the vicious flood of filth the left has organized is only a side point. The main point is that they've clearly prepared in a coordinated fashion for any attempt to expose their strategy.
We're in a war for our liberties, folks, and the enemy has no morals. None. They will literally do and say anything, no matter how indecent, so long as it works.
Deborah| 3.30.09 @ 8:35AM
Good for Breitbart that he's actually coming out and saying this. It's been pretty obvious for a while, especially on the TAS site that these people are rampant. Why are they so afraid of what those on the right are saying? Because they like to hide what they are doing, and we are actually pointing out what they are doing and making logical and fact-based arguments against their tyranny (yes, I mean tyranny -- "arbitrary or unrestrained exercise of power; despotic abuse of authority").
They don't like any criticism because they can't answer it without calling people names and lying or saying "it's Bush's fault." Well, the truth likes to be free. It will come out whether in great gobs of truth or little by little. We've got your number, and we will continue to tell the truth -- whether it's "politically correct" (another left-wing way to curb speech) or not. Get used to it.
Ran| 3.30.09 @ 8:57AM
Plumb,
Exactly. Well said. I'm, not so sure they're assigned so often as rewarded by responses that keeps them around. Feed a troll, he will return.
One solution is to simply erase their gharbazh from the comments sections as they arise, and filter for useful content. At some point, the troll, starved for attention, will seek it elsewhere.
Another solution is to limit comments to paying subscribers and apply the rule above.
Crusader| 3.30.09 @ 9:11AM
Do what I do, ignore them. Responding back to them is playing right into their hands. It keeps them relevant. If you stop posting back to them, they'll eventually go away.

You may remember your mother telling you that sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt you. Take this to heart. People only have as much power over you as you allow. Reasoned, intellectual discourse is something to be treasured. However, most of our resident trolls soon descend into the highly reasoned responses of "OH, yeah?" and " Only an idiot would say that." This quickly identifies these internet saboteurs and the best bet is simply to ignore them. To try to have a logical, informed discussion with them is analogous to trying to teach a pig to sing. You are only wasting your time and it annoys the pig.

It is not just on right wing sites. They are also after the general public, especially those who are beginning to question and wake up. Any article that has a blog that may be pro conservative in any way they spam. We must not be daunted by them. We must answer them with facts. Be careful to get facts correct or they will mob you. We must get the truth out for those who are not yet formed into their sub human molds! Be brave, be confident and be persistent! It is their goal to keep truth from getting out. They know that a little light will expel their darkness.
Many of them melt away if properly confronted with truth. They can't handle it.
