The House Minority Leader just released the following statement:
"The challenge of bringing stability to Afghanistan is
enormously complex, but our efforts to defeat Al Qaeda and the
Taliban are vital to the security of the American people. I
support the strategy the President unveiled today because it
reflects the advice of our commanders on the ground. I hope he
will continue to honor their counsel because we should not
allow political considerations here at home to trump the
importance of achieving success in the region. Moving forward,
we must ensure this strategy is implemented in a manner that is
both flexible and reflective of the situation on the ground,
and we must aggressively monitor its progress.
"The commitment and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform
is nothing short of amazing. Republicans are committed to doing
everything possible to support our troops and give them all the
resources they need to succeed in their mission in
Afghanistan."
Just saw the ticker on Fox scroll by about an Afghani soldier
opening fire on coalition troops, killing 2. Nice! Why are we
trying to make nice-nice with muslims?
Taquiyaa anyone?
Can we get someone, dem or repub, to define "success in
Afghanistan" please?
Obama was a good ACORN commander. Commanding American military,
our sons and daughters is outside his league. Obama will pride
himself on how many American troops he gets killed, judging by
Obama's personal history.
Obama is the wise president of the moderate Taliban, perhaps. He
is otherwise illegitimate.
Obama is the champion of destructive terroists everywhere. He is
no leader for our beloved troops.
Obama, GET OUT OF AFGHANISTAN. You are a loose cannon.
And get out of America.

I had friends and neighbors killed on 9/11.But this war is now
insane. When is the GOP going to wake up and realize the one
opening they have is to stop abusing our military with these
endless pointless deployments? Petreus has done great work in
Iraq, but on both front we will not change these people, their
religion or their culture. Let's stop asking our military to bear
these purposeless burdens .
Obama will likely lose this war for us, he clearly lacks the
judgement, dedication, and principle to win such a labrilynthine
conflict.
He already was caught dozing while the Russians nabbed the
Kyrgizstani air base SO vital to any plans for a US "surge"
strategy in Afghanistan. - It is interesting to note that Obama
has now endorsed such an approach, as he was one of the most
vocal opponents of the SAME strategy in Iraq... as was Biden. If
America had followed their advice then, Iraq would be an Al Qaida
Caliphate by now.
Of course, the media is too preoccupied with articles on his
puppy-vetting process and how he likes to play basketball to call
him on these serious strategic errors.
And now he's going to strike a deal with the 7th Century ogres of
the Taliban- good grief.

and what about Pakistan?
(stupid question, Brooks [no relation to David])
I think what Obama is doing by putting more forces on the ground
is to escalate the war initially and put pressure on the
insurgents and then bribe people away from Taliban. This is
classic stick and carrot policy and how much it will succeed;
only time will tell.
Another very important aspect is the increase in Afghan national
army from 80000 to 134000. I believe that this is most important
aspect of his speech as a strong central force will definitely
have some impact on the overall situation. If the situation in
Afghanistan stabilise to the extent that local army takes charge
of the situation (even if the Taliban are not totally defeated)
and foreign forces leave than situation in Pakistan will cool
down as well.
