The New York Times is reporting
that liberal Democrats are already resisting efforts by the Obama
administration to do something about Social Security, and that in
response, Obama shelved plans to announce a Social Security task
force at today's White House "fiscal responsibility summit." If
this report is accurate, that would actually make the summit even
more of a farce than it is already shaping up to be, given that
there's no way to address this nation's long-term fiscal
nightmare without dealing with Social Security.
I always assumed that the Dems resistance to Dubya's attempts to
bring Social Security into long-term solvency was a manifestation
of their personal hatred for the Prez. And, if the program was to
be fixed, they wanted full credit. It now appears they are simply
irresponsible, power-hungry dolts who don't give a damn about
future generations.

Why would they want to reform it. As it currently works they can
spend the excess and/or count it towards their budget "balancing"
smoke and mirrors. Until it is treated like retirement accounts,
invested and managed to grow, instead of used to fill government
coffers it is nothing better than a welfare ponzi racket.
