Another Tax-Challenged Cabinet Nominee

Oops!  It turns out that Tom Daschle has his own tax problem.  Reports ABC News:

ABC News has learned that the nomination of former Senator Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., to be President Obama's Secretary of Health and Human Services has hit a traffic snarl on its way through the Senate Finance Committee.

The controversy deals with a car and driver lent to Daschle by a wealthy Democratic friend, a chauffeur service the former senator used for years without declaring it on his taxes.

It remains an open question as to whether this is a "speed bump," as a Democratic Senate ally of Daschle put it, or something more damaging.

I find it easier to believe that this was a genuine oversight than I do Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner's case.  But still, it doesn't look good.  Why do the folks who want to raise our taxes seem to have such a hard time paying their own?

Move along, now. Nothing to see here. Just another "distraction."

It looks like being a fraud is a requirement to serve under the Hope&Change;administration.

Birds of a feather... and all that.

Don't tell me....he's a democrat...and he's an Obama nominee?

So much for "change we can believe in." How gullible were we?

Maybe these rich lefties realize how odious these taxes are, so they want to avoid them just as much as everyone else?

Of course, they have the LeftyMedia to cover for them, whereas most people, rich and otherwise, don't.

John Tordella| 1.30.09 @ 10:04PM

I now more clearly see why many distrust the executives in our government. Where did they leave their ethics and honesty? This is not a honest oversite by Mr. Daschle; it is fraud. So much for "change we can believe in".

carol| 1.30.09 @ 11:19PM

Amazing how these "oversights" are coincident with nomination for a government position. I truly believe that if these nominees were NOT appointed to an office they would have no intention of ever paying these taxes.

What is almost as disturbing is so many of our elected representatives---on BOTH sides of the aisle---are willing to say this is no big deal and shouldn't affect the nomination. What galls me is these republicans no darn well that if it were republican nominees they would be run out of town on a rail. (Ask linda chavez.)

It seems so long ago that Rush had daily comments about Puff Daschle, only to be superceded by Dingy Harry.

I've forgotten Puff's furrowed worries - were they all about "troubling allegations" or "appearances needing consideration" or "images worthy of concern"?

I'm sure he's sorry it's come to this, this "genuine oversight".

rich| 1.31.09 @ 12:50AM

Well, let's pretend Gov. is the answer to our problems and we can all have oversights for taxes ,and .........

Jim| 1.31.09 @ 3:34AM

Bandow's contention that this might indeed be a "genuine oversight" is preposterous. He has dealt with tax issues for decades as a Congressman; ditto for his wife, who presumably argues tax angles on behalf of clients during her marathon lobbying. That he "discovered" this "oversight" in June and only filed amended returns in January--when he knew he would be scrutinized--says it all. And why does our corrupt Senate want to hold closed door hearings--Good for Grassley in calling for plenty of sunshine.

From John Hinderaker at www.powerlineblog.com: "As a life-long politician, Tom Daschle never earned much money. But he retired from the Senate, after being defeated for re-election by John Thune, as a multimillionaire. He retired to Georgetown, of course, not to South Dakota. This happens a lot in Washington, and Daschle's case is pretty typical.

"His wife Linda is or was a lobbyist, and she was the one who reported the family's income. (This is inference, since Daschle consistently chose not to make his tax returns public.) Linda Daschle made millions "lobbying" on behalf of various corporate interests. There was no conflict of interest, the Democrats assured us, because Linda Daschle only "lobbied" the House of Representatives, not the Senate, where her husband was either the Majority or the Minority Leader for much of his career.

"But wait! If a company hired Linda to lobby House members, the check they wrote went straight into the Senate Majority Leader's joint checking account. It would have been a felony to write the check to Tom in exchange for political services, but a check to Linda, that went into the same bank account? No problem! She wasn't lobbying the Senate! So Tom Daschle became a multimillionaire.

"Another thing that happens a lot in Washington is that when Democrats get appointed to visible, high-ranking positions in the Executive Branch, they suddenly discover that they owe a lot more money in taxes."

Why do Americans tolerate thieves and crooks running our government? What does that say about us as a country? And, why is it that Republicans go on trial or to jail for being on the take, but Democrats never do? The media has a lot to do with that. (Oh, I guess Rod Blagojevich will go on trial since he was such an embarrassment to The One.)

Don't worry, int he spirit of bi-partisanship, Senate Rs will pull their pants down and bend over for Dems. Daschle is all but confirmed.

Just does not pass the smell test. Doesn't sound as serious as Geithner (the tax cheat).

dk| 1.31.09 @ 12:24PM

If the Geithners and the Daschles of the world paid their taxes*, then maybe we would not have such a deficit.

*When due and on time and not only after being nominated for a cabinet seat.

How close are we to a State run Media? When the Main Stream Media are in bed with the Democrates, we get the same result. No way could a Republican be confirmed with this tax issue. The Democrats in the House would hold hearings and the MSM would have primetime updates. We should be afraid of where we are going.

WendyG| 2.1.09 @ 9:04AM

Hey now, things are really really bad. And all the se hand-picked Obama crooks will lead us out of the woods!!!

>>>No way could a Republican be confirmed with this tax issue. The Democrats in the House would hold hearings and the MSM would have primetime updates.

Ain't that the truth.

Robert Rosencrans| 2.1.09 @ 3:49PM

In 2001 Senator Daschle came out strongly against tax cuts. Now we see the genius of his strategy. If taxes were low, it wouldn't pay to forget about paying them, until such time as it becomes convenient to remember to pay them, otherwise making yourself unsuitable for further high paid government positions.
