In this column, Boston Globe sports writer Dan Shaughnessy sounds like a guy who is angry that one of his friends is married now and can't go out for beers every night. No offense to Matt Cassel, who provided solid play and leadership throughout the season, but I'd take a canoodling Tom Brady over any non-canoodling quarterback in the NFL. Though the New England Patriots did end up missing Asante Samuel this season more than Brady.

Matt Cassel played quite well, but no general manager outside New England should be lusting after him. There have been FAR too many cases of mediocre backup QBs playing well for outstanding teams, and then failing miserably when given a big contract to start for a bad team.

Almost any decent quarterback would have put up numbers as good as Cassel's, if he'd played for the Patriots this past year. But Cassel would never have put up such numbers as starting quarterback of the Lions of Chiefs.

Cassel has every right to be proud of his performance, but he is NOT the answer to any other team's prayers. He's just a very solid role player for a team that's already very strong.
