Ezra Klein writes of Obama's speech, "The speech was good. Not great. But then, it couldn't be a great speech because this is not the time for great speeches." No, it isn't the time for great speeches, but it is the time for a $170 million inauguration. As I asked in my column on the main site: "Are we to believe that if Obama knocked it out of the ballpark, the media would say it was too showy and inappropriate for the occasion?"

I like Obama, but when has he EVER given a GREAT speech? As Peggy Noonan noted, he has an excellent literary writing style. His "no drama" demeanor works in both directions -- no real highs and no real lows. I believe she is right.

One of the reasons we think of him as a great orator is that he is compared to bottom of the barrel speechmakers like Bush and McCain. But he is no Lincoln, and we should not expect it.

As to the size of the inauguration, face it, he is a star and the country needs a star after the disastrous Bush administration and the state of our economy.
