The Bungled Oath

Here's the video. With all the planning that went into this event, you'd think that the two Harvard Law grads would be able to get the most important part correct. Pretty remarkable that they flubbed it. Bonus question: how long before some crank files a lawsuit claiming that Obama isn't really president because he never took the oath properly?

Chief Justice Roberts did not read the oath in its correct sequence, throwing President Obama off cue. But, constitutionally, it doesn't matter. The president-elect becomes president at noon EST. The oath is largely a formality.

I agree that one of the kind of folks who frequent the American Spectator will try to make a mountain out of this molehill.

Happy Inauguration Day!

Your making the comparison of the bungled oath and the validity of obama's birth certificate isn't a very good one. My thinking is the place of birth issue will likely not go away anytime soon.

The post doesn't say that "one of the kind of folks who frequent the American Spectator will try to make a mountain out of this molehill," so how can Interloper agree to that?

ruth| 1.20.09 @ 4:56PM

Interloper sounds out of breath, he must have just returned from the Inauguration. How close did you get to 'The One'?

Jeremiah| 1.20.09 @ 5:21PM

The Chief Justice stumbled a little. I thought Obama handled the moment well. In little things, there may be some sign of things to come. He was calm and dignified.

Obama's demeanour was sober and serious throughout, which I appreciated.

His address had little soaring rhetoric. It had few applause lines. (Yes, folks, he could have had them if he wanted them.)

I think in part Obama feels the need to establish his seriousness: if nothing else, the cultural cliches attributing emotionalism and transport to black leaders would be something he'd want to reign in as he takes office.

The grown-ups are gone. The frat boys/punks have taken over. See Rahm Emanuel on Drudge. No respect for the office or the moment.

The American people will tire of this sophomoric crew soon enough.

Alan Brooks| 1.20.09 @ 6:44PM

not only was Interloper at the Inauguration, he was also at Reverend Wright's house for breakfast.

Scott A Joseph, MD| 1.20.09 @ 7:04PM

No surprise they bungled it. Lawyers are the guys without the nerves or brains to be MDs.

Interloper| 1.20.09 @ 7:14PM

Anyone who knows the biographies of Bush and Obama is aware that Bush was the party hearty frat boy who became an alcoholic, and, Obama introspective and responsible. One can only gather that far Right denizens know next to nothing about things they try to discuss.

Happy Inauguration Day!

WendyG| 1.20.09 @ 7:16PM

Bush was a frat boy when he was in college. Rahm acted like a frat boy TODAY.

Jon| 1.20.09 @ 7:55PM

"Interloper" said: Anyone who knows the biographies of Bush and Obama is aware that Bush was the party hearty frat boy who became an alcoholic, and, Obama introspective and responsible. "

Was Obama being "introspective and responsible" while he was snorting coke?

Kat| 1.20.09 @ 8:03PM

What a clown you are Interloper--Bush was the frat boy. Introspective and responsible, is that what you and other liberals call Obama's heavy Cocaine use? Idiot.

Frosty| 1.20.09 @ 8:05PM

Perhaps that's the reason Obama screwed up his LINES.

Alan Brooks| 1.20.09 @ 9:14PM

why does Interloper come to AS? he must be interested in maybe being politically ACDC.
you know. like Barney Frank.

Holmes| 1.20.09 @ 9:23PM

I wonder how long it will take them to strip the windows, plumbing and doors off the white House.
I guess they will make the place like home fairly quick.

TiresomeWindbags| 1.20.09 @ 9:32PM

Wow, I thought there were thoughtful people who read The American Spectator. Quite a few of these comments evidence very small and petty thinking.

Frosty| 1.20.09 @ 10:05PM

Much like your worthless post, windbag.

Noquitter| 1.20.09 @ 10:31PM

It would be great if AS would research this issue of Obama's eligibility instead of taking swipes at those of us that have un answered questions.

Alan Brooks| 1.20.09 @ 10:44PM

if you do the research on O's nation of birth yourself then the questions wont be un answered.

well perhaps barney frank isnt ACDC. but he HAS been in politics a long time.

ruth| 1.20.09 @ 11:05PM

Noquitter, you're probably right but TAS has a lot on its plate. They already get enough flak from the left. Alan, when I think of the name Barney I want to think of the Bush's adorable Scotty. The other one not so much.

3Case| 1.21.09 @ 6:59AM

One would think that One with supreme presence of mind would easily follow the Chief Justice, properly sequenced or not, without problem.

As for Interloper, I say to all you whiners, criers and ninnies: Your guy's Prez. Your party has Congress. It is time for you folks to shut up and put up.

noquitter| 1.21.09 @ 10:21AM

Mr. Brooks, my investigation can only take me so far. The power the media holds can open up things that I have no access to. Look into the issue yourself and see if it lends to any valid end.
On line postings of altered doc's are not credible.
