Re: Sex Sells

Well, Nicole, whether or not it's a "step back" for the feminist movement, I would argue that the Internet virgin has at least proven something:

Laura Gallier, who runs a Texas-based abstinence education program, was dumbfounded by the news that bidding in the online auction of a California woman's virginity had reached $3.7 million.
"When I communicate to young people that their virginity is valuable, that's not exactly what I have in mind," said Gallier, author of Choosing to Wait.
Yet if 22-year-old Natalie Dylan has proven nothing else, she has demonstrated that virginity -- though not exactly innocence -- has market value.

Please feel free the read the rest of it. However, any critic who accuses me of "cherry-picking the evidence" will be pun-ished.

Groan. Thanks a bunch, Natalie, trashy little tart.

Alan Brooks| 1.14.09 @ 1:03PM

poor thing, she's too far ahead of the curve; couldn't she wait another fiteen minutes for her moment of fame?
game over. do as thou wilt.
God has been euthanized, dragged from heaven and placed where the chattering classes have always known where he belonged-- in the dumpster to rest with the discarded Penthouse mags, milk cartons and eggshells.
Palin's daughter made the mistake of getting pregnant by an actual human; if she had been in a lesbian relationship and had gotten pregnant via a sperm donor, that would be worthy of a book, perhaps even a $26,000,000 grossing flick..
Get with the program..
At the same time Palin's daughter was getting her fifteen minutes of chattery noodle-lashing, 'Zack And Miri Make A Pornographic' (something like that) grossed $34,000,000. or perhaps $29,000,000. or $41,000,000.
doesnt matter. money is no object.
point is, the empty void, the pushy tastelessness counts, nothing more. it could almost have been titled "Zack And Miri Do A Poo Poo'.
time is not money. sex is money.
get with it, chumps. its the 21st century.
Rob Reiner and the kid who was Opie then Richie Cunningham who went bald and made the Mermaid-sex 'Splash', then later Nixon versus Frost, have an important product to sell: EMPTY TASTELESS sex.
as long as it is tasteless and therefore not snobbish, not uppity, that is the groove, baby, for what unites us from every patriot grave, the bond stretching from every DVD player in the nation, is our in-your-face tastelessness, a way to vent our desire to kill through tasteless 'sexiness'-- porno. sex itself is dead.
long live the God of porn.
the mars Goddess of vented violence through porn.
'Zack And Miri Do A Snuff Film'.

no one must EVER go broke underestimating our tawdriness.

"People get the government they deserve", Thomas Jefferson. And we sure have got ours. Not everyone is a dirtbag, Alan, not everyone. So depressing.

Mike| 1.14.09 @ 2:23PM

Ruth,
I disagree that the people got the government they deserved under President Bush. How can anyone expect good government from a man who believes that government is a problem, a man who appoints people without the requisite skills manage large, complex government agencies and a man who, with his appointees, systematically undermined the ability of regulatory agencies to perform their jobs by underfunding and under staffing them?
Mr. Bush's major accomplishment, one neither he nor his supporter talk about, was changing the tax code to favor the wealthiest citizens in the United States.

malm| 1.14.09 @ 2:27PM

Alan, an actress named Elizabeth Banks made the movie you reference above. She comes from Massachusetts and has just received some big time award for contributing to(what else) the arts. Funny thing, is that she went to U of Penn and graduated Magna Cum Laude , so says Wikipedia. Also, one of her listed quotes puts down any kind of abstinence. The little Magna Cum bright girls uses the " their gonna do it anyway" rationale. So many other great minds share this point of view dontcha know. So Magna Cum Laude makes Magna Cum Porn makes Magna Cum Bucks. If, the UPenn stuff is correct, then be honest she is one of our best and brightest. She'll be in the Senate someday. I'll by 2012 or so. Will win down south in one of the last of the red states. Will of the people and all of that.

Alan Brooks| 1.14.09 @ 2:37PM

malm,
Situation Normal All Fouled Up.
feel right at home these day, like the day after christmas 1965 when a beatnik took my clothes off while my parents were still sleeping.
the folks had lady chatterly's lover on the on the coffee table.

ruth| 1.14.09 @ 2:45PM

Alan you are not alone. My mom has never really recovered from her childhood. As a result, her children paid the price, too. God bless you.

Alan Brooks| 1.14.09 @ 2:51PM

oh yes, and Henry Miller was on the bookshelf.
"he's a real man", my mom would say.

he sure was.

ruth| 1.14.09 @ 2:56PM

Mike, you've got that exactly opposite. At this time, 86% of all US Federal taxes are paid by the top 25% wage-earners; this is up from 84% in 2000. So you are wrong; Bush's policies have actually increased the amount of taxes paid by the wealthy. Did Interloper give you your 'facts'? Thought so.

Alan Brooks| 1.14.09 @ 3:15PM

all that matters now is that virtue is dead.
so maybe just a tiny bit of taste can be salvaged?
or at least some shred of microscopic decency?
we shouldn't ask for much, just small favors.
lets require actors who are depicted raping and molesting-- in films such as 'Sam Peckinpah Meets Bambi' --to practice safe sex.

we want to set a good example for the general public.

Alan Brooks| 1.14.09 @ 3:21PM

the actors in 'Porky's Revenge, Horizontal-Wise' and 'Death Wish Molester III' should have worn condoms.

be thankful for small favors.

malm| 1.14.09 @ 3:39PM

Hey now, talking bout Henry Miller, in most circles today he'd be tame, though I must admit certain parts of Sexus did sizzle. And, of course you had to be able to read to enjoy his stuff. He had some long words as part of his prose style, and would thus be unpopular to the porno lover of today. Lived in Big Sur area back in the old days, gotta envy that. Mike I am not too sure of many things, but if you really the federal government is underfunded you are nuts. The feds are lacking in two areas, say three for openers common sense, productivity, and accountability. Remember too, the president is the CEO but they do come and go. The board of directors is Congress and they stay and stay, and if replaced it is often by a relative,or a celebrity, or a union stooge. This is mostly a democrat thing. Ruth has never read Henry Miller right ? A wonderful role model for modern men, along with Hef, and that Snoop kitty kat guy. Oops, better be careful he is down with the Crips, or is it the Bloods. Those guys have zero sense of humour.

ruth| 1.14.09 @ 3:57PM

Malm, why bring me into it? Don't make assumptions.

malm| 1.14.09 @ 3:59PM

You right, virtue dead. I recall a line in some dopey movie or book I recently came across, " one of the virtues I lack is virtue", uttered a rather sickening character. . But as the brainy, wisdom dripping divas of the View might say in response, "That does not mean you're a bad person ". And the women in the audience clap in approval of that pearl. We must clone Ruth

ruth| 1.14.09 @ 4:01PM

Ugh. Don't even get me started on the freaks in Big Sur. Gorgeous country, the denizens not so much.

ruth| 1.14.09 @ 4:04PM

Alan, stop watching that crap-it'll make you go blind. That's what I tell my 19 year old son, James. Makes him laugh, but I know he thinks about it.

Alan Brooks| 1.14.09 @ 4:11PM

Henry Miller is rated 'G' today, teachers would require him in grade skoolz if the kids could read.
my point is and will always be misery loves company.
everyone today, no matter how venal, can be bonded to the People by degradation-- not merely sex, but anything lowbrow or at least empty, disposable. Zack and Miri are lite and fluffi,
not heavy.
if we cant be lowerclass, or commies like Chaplin was, we can still share the morals of proles.
its seeping down lower than you think. last night on the bus two kids were talking about erasing discs and burning porn. 10 year olds.
no one in the bus said anything. they were right behind the driver but he smiled.
so we know what the next decade will be like. the economy will eventually go up, the morality will go south. do as thou wilt is God! it's a fact.
"do as thou wilt as long as you dont step on my toes, don't mess with Me and mine". the silent majority is overwhelmed not by commies this time, theyre not even socialists, they are quasi-nihilists,
right marxists/left libertopians: its not power to the people this time around, its "do your own thing" for the masses.

Alan Brooks| 1.14.09 @ 4:20PM

ERRATA! its not the silent majority anymore, its the Cowed Tiny Minority. im not with it,
AM indeed living in the past, baby.

the silent majority was 40 years ago... it's all gone. it's like it was a dream.

ruth| 1.14.09 @ 4:34PM

One thing hasn't changed, Alan; we're all gonna die someday--even the 'hipsters'. In the meantime, I'm keeping my eye on the Prize, and He's not of this world. I will fight to my death to keep His light shining in my heart and soul, and I'll try to help anyone else who is fighting the good fight, too. It's the best I can do unless you've got something better up your sleeve. I will never despair, though. Won't do it.

malm| 1.14.09 @ 6:12PM

The quasi nihilist will not have their toes stepped on. The pleasure principle has captured them, and as long as they can buy enough of what contents them they will be happy. As long as they can download happiness in their tunes, video , and no doubt newer more sensational audio/video thrills and sensations, they will be content. They will vote democrat. What about you and those like you ? Are you safe ? I believe those behind this are nasty. Do you at least hope a real leader will emerge to give our nation a rebirth. Was 1776 the only revolution we are allowed ?

ruth| 1.14.09 @ 7:01PM

Oh, yes, nasty. Very nasty indeed.
